the ruddy duck is typically brown in color with a bright blue bill. however, this individual is almost solely black. this bird is melanistic; they are affected by a harmless genetic mutation that causes overproduction of melanin in comparison to typical plumage. melanin is an important component in birds’ feathers, so while melanistic birds usually suffer no ill health, mutations on the opposite end of the spectrum (albinism and leucism, a lack of melanin) often lead to birds with weak and brittle feathers.

I made the ducks Ruddy Ducks, as it fits the description. The geography is off, though. But then, Vesper. Nothing fits compared to our world.

The King Eider, like other eider species, is a northern sea duck that is primarily found along the coast of the Arctic Ocean, as well as the cold northern waters of the Pacific and the Atlantic. The male is patterned in black, white, blue, green, and orange, while the female is mottled brown with subtle chevron patterns along the sides.

The Ruddy Duck has a long, stiff tail that both males and females often hold up out of the water. Females have a dark grey bill year round while males' bills turn blue during breeding season. Compared to all other duck species, Ruddy Ducks lay the largest eggs proportionate their body size.
