Ruler: Master of the Masked - First Impressions Episodes 1-4 starring Yoo Seung Ho, Kim So Hyun and Lee Myung Soo

I am now on episode 4. Another historical drama, yes! This one is about a King who masks his only son (Crown Prince Lee Sun) to protect him from a powerful organization called Pyunsoo hwe. They control the water, charging high prices and block access for Joseon.

The crown Prince Lee Sun sneaks out of the palace and enters the city streets to discover two friends and through this journey of days he is exposed to the poverty and the powerful control over access to water. Now I am not going to lie I like this idea of the prince entering the streets and seeing the struggles of his people and wanting to actually do something about it, so I have continued to watch.

There are a few well known faces in those show but quite a few new ones and I look forward to discovering actors I have not seen or noticed before.

I am a fan of Yoo Seung-ho which has led me to this drama, he is always a “scene stealer” so to speak and it’s a beautiful occurance when it happens, Kim So-hyun is always solid, Kim Myung-soo is on my radar, he is quite young but he makes me notice him and I am always watching waiting for him to have that moment, or that role where he shows all of his capabilities as it’s in there, we simply have to wait for the right combination.

The other faces I recognize are Yoo So-Hee as Kim Haw-goon, who seems like she is the character who will stand on the border line of good and bad, Park Chul-Min as Master Woo Bo who is clearly a strong influence for the Crown Prince with his knowledge and love of teaching. Those are the ones I recognize, the rest are all unfamiliar to me and that truly excites me as it makes it even more unpredictable, similarly with the recent ending of Rebel: Hong Gil-dong, it was such a delight to me as I wasn’t sure what I would get from the ensemble and boy was it enjoyable.

After the Crown Prince Lee Sun meets a young friend who is a similar age with a similar drive and has his name as well as a young female he is interested in Ga Eun, somehow Lee Sun fits right in with these two and their families. The King has sent Prince Lee Sun’s closest friend Chung Woon to search for him as he would recognize his voice or the Crown Prince would recognize him and just when trouble ma arise Chung Woon spots him and pulls him aside telling him they have to go but the Prince refuses as he sees a need to help his friends who are in truth his people. This is probably the 5th time we are shown the Crown Prince is not just smart but compassionate and diligent. These scenes are shown with importance so I paid attention. As what it does is it sets you up for his bad ass Prince moment when he finds a way to use his power as the Crown Prince to save his friends father who is about to lose a limb. He tells the head of the water supply that simply because water is within their possession it does not make it theirs. He compares himself and his position to water, that it is given by the Gods to the people. He tells the magistrate to use the rules to protect the people not punish them. I am listening, dialogue is not too bad the message is inspiring.

 I am listening but I wasn’t truly paying attention until Myung Soo’s character Lee Sun met with his father who was released, thanks to the Crown Prince, who is secretly his new friend, were headed home, having a nice conversation of studying and then they are attacked. When Lee Sun awakens his father has been murdered and my heart skipped a beat and I am truly paying attention now. I hope the story leaves behind the lightweight episode 3-4 and heads straight into heavyweight chaos we all love and crave from historicals.

 I am still only 4 episodes in, so I am curious and holding out for what comes next. I’m not nearly as wrapped in it as I was for Rebel Hong Gil Dong or my 2nd favorite this year, Sacred Hearts, as those first few episodes had me hooked and excited for what comes next, while here I am simply curious. Which is due to the pacing and the immediately “please see these two characters like each other,” scenes being tossed in and lasting too long making it not seem natural and seem more like a way to try to do what they think viewers want. This is problematic already so we will see what happens in the next few episodes as the Crown Prince and those surrounding him have even more obstacles.
