ich liebe Kichererbsen
Hello, my people! One component of the program is a German class twice a week. It's made me realize how much I miss learning a language. Living in a country while learning the language is incredibly beneficial. I've been able to learn vocabulary naturally: through billboards, street signs, and menus in addition to using my context clues. I'm also learning the various situations in which people say different phrases. Although I have SO much work to do, I've learned a lot of German this past month in Aachen.
Although my research has been a slow process, I can actually use what I've learned in my civil engineering classes for my project! For example, I'm using a program called "Aramis" to analyze crack widths in concrete samples from a tensile test. I can apply my knowledge of mechanics to an actual data set which is pretty cool.
Here is a diagram of the crack widths produced by Aramis.

Now onto the amazing sights! This weekend, the UROP group planned a trip to Rursee (aka the Rur Reservoir), a lake belonging to the Eifel National Park. This massive manmade lake was formed from the construction of the Rur Dam in 1939. It was quite a strenuous journey to reach the hostel, especially when you miss the train like I did AHH.

The chickpeas (Kichererbsen) really stole the show in this picture.

We went kayaking, hiking, and swimming! I loved being able to get away for the weekend and spent quality time with friends. Rursee reminds me of the upper peninsula in Michigan. It was incredibly beautiful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All that hiking calls for group yoga at the Düren Hauptbahnhof 🙌🙌 Athough I'm having less German food than expected, I've tried some new foods. Pierogis and sour cream = the ultimate duo.

Okay one last chickpea post...
Alright, bis später. Keep up the great work everyone.

Aix-la-Chapelle

Week 6: UROP Takes on the Rursee
This past weekend, UROP took us on a much awaited two day retreat to the Rursee located in the Eifel. If this destination means approximately nothing to you, then you and I had something in common. Aside from a few notes the program provided about some mysterious “UROP Olympics”, a packing list involving hiking boots and a towel, and a vaguely intimidating warning about “physically taxing” activities, I had very little to go off of. As someone who typically opts for packing lists with flip flops and sundresses and who prefers my activities on the “physically relaxing” side of the spectrum, I was admittedly somewhat hesitant to see what this weekend would bring. However, no matter what my prior expectations were, nothing could have truly prepared me for how much fun this little getaway would be.
Packing was limited to whatever clothes, snacks, drinks, etc. could be stuffed in our backpacks. Once I managed to accomplish this feat, I met with our group and took a bus Saturday morning off to the Rursee (only about an hour and a half away from Aachen).
We stayed in a hostel completely booked out to our program which was perfect for us and whatever innocent tourists would have otherwise had the (dis)pleasure of dealing with 50 rambunctious, occasionally chaotic American/Canadian students for the weekend. After arriving we split off into different 4 person bedrooms fit with all the classic staples only a hostel can provide. From its Hilton-worthy bunk beds to its 5 star (and 5 sq. feet) room sizes, the house was a perfect fit for a weekend of hanging out, partying, and embracing the outdoors.
For lunch, we were served a spaetzle dish with cream sauce which was delicious but heavy in the classic German-cuisine way. Thankfully, we walked it off a bit with a quick 10 minute trek to the lake. Was the water freezing and the outdoor temperature barely above 60 degrees? Yes. Did we go in anyways? Absolutely. (Did some of us, possibly including me, complain about it 80% of the time we were there? Natuerlich.)

Late afternoon rolled around, and it was time to begin the UROP Olympics. Split into teams, we competed in many different (suspiciously chatGPT generated) challenges. My team put up a fight in everything from a three-legged race and Egg-and-spoon race (with a piece of ginger instead of an egg?) to even poetry writing (a devastating kryptonite for STEM-majors everywhere). Full disclosure: my team did not even make the podium, but for anyone reading this, we were completely robbed.
After our tragic loss in the UROP Olympics we drowned our sorrows with a very “Girl Dinner” style meal of dry bread and cold cuts. Not a terribly memorable dinner, but luckily we were warned to bring snacks. Following that, we went on a short hike to a scenic outlook point which was absolutely beautiful. Even as a non-outdoorsy person myself, I know a worthwhile view when I see one.

Some trees and views from the hike to the outlook point
We returned to a bonfire where we talked and made smores until late in the night. Since we were technically located in a “Dark Sky” district, the stars were gorgeous at night. I 1) realized I had been “spotting” the big dipper incorrectly my whole life and 2) finally saw the real one.

The Big Dipper (I'm pretty sure this time)
The next day, we dragged ourselves out of bed pretty late in time to check out of the hostel, eat some impressively good salami pizza (because “pepperoni” here apparently just means peppers…), and begin another hike to a small beach. The weather was absolutely perfect for a day on the lake. With the sun shining bright in the sky (a first here in Germany… jk… kind of…), we kayaked and swam and sunbathed the rest of the day away.

Kayaking on the lake: clear waters and blue skies
Ultimately, this weekend was worth every bit of anticipation. The retreat was the perfect way to celebrate making it halfway through our research and the program, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the trips we have scheduled over the next month.
