The Frog
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
The Frog (2024, South Korea)
Director: Mo Wan Il
Writer: Son Ho Young
Mini-review:
Wow, I didn't think I would enjoy The Frog so much. I guess I was in the mood for a dark, propulsive thriller. I've seen some people say it's 'slow', but like... where? This kept me glued to the screen from the very first episode, and it got more and more intense throughout the next ones. It even ventures into psychological horror territory from time to time, which made it even more fun to me. The writing isn't perfect (some of the characters aren't as well developed as they should), but the directing and the acting more than make up for it. Go Min Si turns in a particularly strong performance, and it's clear she gave it her all. I'm not gonna say this is the best thriller k-drama I've seen, but it was definitely enjoyable as hell.

Ep9 Love Next Door short review
Tumblr media
The ending make me cry when the mom hug seok ryu..coz literally that was what she supposed to do at the first place instead of hiding from her.
Tumblr media
It even make her depress.
The good news her ex did not cheat but yup I can see why it ended. The ex could told to her family though instead of just bearing the burden together.
The way she reject seung hyo I got the feeling she don't want the same situation happening with seung hyo as it did with hyeon ju
Thankfully the writernim to make romance on 2nd lead although it supposed to do it with main couple.
The moment when she wish Yeon du is her daughter and the cute moment
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Really saved the romance in the episode.
Oh the blowing up dryer ,why her mother hiding the spoon ..could it mean something??🤔
So far I'm staying even thought it's cancer I will see how the writernim will pursue this.
Going to have more crying on next ep

The angst loving girl in me is loving this. Maaannn i can't wait for him crying next week. Pain? Love it. Sign me up! All this time we've seen Seok Ryu in short being chased after, I'm excited to see Seung Hyo crying next lmao idk what's the correlation between these two points but there is a correlation lmaooo
Ik lots of ppl are predicting sad ending blah blah but I'm not there. That theory simply does not vibe with me. I refuse to believe this story in the year 2024 is gonna do another of that dumb repetitive death trope. People can just simply be in pain, has a health problem and maybe a disability and I'm going forward with that in mind until it's really hitting me in the face that she's dead in her grave in the drama
Also Mo Eum and Dan Ho why are you two so funny??? 🤣 There's a looming 'ex wife/gf' thing in the background but rn all I see is a flustered single dad and a rarely flustered Mo Eum 😂😂 where are they gonna go from here? Please ask her/him out!!
But there's also the matter of North Antarctica 🤔.......

Seoul Station (2016)
Tumblr media
Seoul Station is a prequel to Train to Busan and feels like it. I mean that this is a cheap-looking, uninspired and forgettable cash-grab made only because the original film was successful. If you saw this animated movie first, you wouldn’t be interested in seeing more - live-action or not.
Former prostitute Hye-sun (voiced by Ryu Seung-ryong) learns her boyfriend Ki-woong wants to pimp her out online. She runs away from him, just as a mysterious disease begins spreading among the homeless people of Seoul. As soon as one of them dies, they come back as crazed flesh-eaters that attack anyone in sight. When Ki-woong (voiced by Lee Joon) is confronted by Hye-sun’s father, he and Suk-gyu (voiced by Ryu Seung-ryong) begin searching.
There’s nothing wrong with making an animated horror zombie movie but “Seoul Station” never takes advantage of its medium. In fact, the only reason it doesn’t feature live actors appears to be so it could re-use assets. Look carefully at any scene and you’ll spot the same one-armed ghoul multiple times with - at best his shirt colour-swapped. As Suk-gyu and Ki-woong frantically drive down the streets of Seoul, there isn’t another vehicle in sight. There’s no trash either and no pedestrians walking. The city’s so clean, it practically sparkles even once the apocalypse begins. The backgrounds look fine but the characters move stiffly and unnaturally, as if they’re assets from a video game someone’s hacked to create a movie.
There’s an admirable attempt to start a conversation about Korea’s lowest class: the homeless and women who are in abusive relationships or forced into prostitution. Unfortunately, the conversation goes nowhere. So what if the first people infected were homeless? It’s not like going to a hospital and getting the best medical care money can buy would prevent you from succumbing to the disease. So Hye-sun’s troubled background puts her at risk of getting bitten by the undead. It’s not like the same couldn’t be said about every other person in the country. All this cast of characters offers us are unlikeable, weepy people in a zombie movie that does NOTHING new. Keyw ord is weepy. There are almost as many tears shed as blood. You understand it’s a traumatic experience, that these people don’t know they’re in a horror movie, but come on. Over and over, they make dumb mistakes. The most common is forgetting to shut doors behind them. If you liked these people, you might get annoyed. Since you don’t care if they live or die, you hope they get what they deserve and wind up ghoul chow.
Tumblr media
There’s a twist at the end of the film so unbelievable I have to talk about it. When Hye-Sun, Ki-woong, and Suk-gyu finally reunite, the woman is horrified. He’s not her father… he's her former pimp! You didn't see it coming but let's go over a couple of things to make sure we understand it all properly. In the middle of the literal end of the world, Suk-gyu decided to go to a hospital whose entire population was turned into monsters, confront the police and army, climb up a building with gnashing teeth at his heels, and run people over… for what? a couple of hundred bucks a woman stole from him? Even if it was a lot of money, did he think she would be carrying them in her nonexistent pockets and purse? It’s preposterous; a twist for a twist’s sake.
Tumblr media
Even if this was a good-looking movie, if you could latch onto the characters and if it were genuinely frightening… there would still be no reason to see Seoul Station. Unlike Train to Busan, which made the familiar genre feel new with an innovative location, this movie is content with the basics and nothing more. You’ve already seen this movie a thousand times. (Original Korean with English subtitles, May 21, 2021)

Solo Leveling Next Gen AU Headcanons
These are mostly personal headcanons to explain a few things about the AU of the next gen OC's, including some timelines for the kids and their parents (just want to give some kind of logic to it)
Open to questions/suggestions for anything not mentioned
The adopted children who are awakened (Choibaek's kids and Hoshino Taiyo) absorb some of the mana from their parents over time, so their powers tend to resemble the powers of their parents (All three of Choibaek's kids are some sort of control over fire while Hoshino Taiyo is a ranger like Lim Tae-Gyu)
Timeline of when each kid was introduced to the others (this is mostly for me since I've lost track a few times-)
- Eun-Seok and Park Hee-Jin have their first child (Guen Tae-Il) - Sung Jin-Woo and Cha Hae-In have their child (Sung Su-Ho) - Baek Yoon-Ho and Choi Jong-In adopt Baek Seok-Jin and Choi Je-ni - Hoshino Minoru and Lim Tae-Gyu adopt Hoshino Taiyo and Hoshino Kira - Baek Yoon-Ho and Choi Jong-In adopt Baek Mi-Ho - Eun-Seok and Park Hee-Jin have their second child (Guen Jae-Kyung) - Min Byung-Gyu and Lee Ju-Hee have their child (Min Beom-Ryu)
Order of when the couples started dating: Minlee, Jinhae, Choibaek, Taenoru, Heeseok
Order the couples got married in: Jinhae, Choibaek, Taenoru, Minlee, Heeseok
(The order of the couples may be changed later, but that's what I have in mind for now)

My controversial Kdrama opinions
1. Ko Moon Young was just a psychologically messed up girl. She isn't the 'girlpower' or 'badass' that the Kdrama fandom likes to dub her into.
2. In 'Hotel del Luna', they could've just chucked the entire character of Gu Chansung out of the window and gave Chang Myung a rebirth/rebirths,make him go through various trials and tribulations to repent and earn Man Wol's forgiveness. Didn't have to make it unnecessarily tragic.
3. Unnecessarily tragic reminds me, the 'realistic' ending of 2521 was a JOKE. There was NO point of developing such a power couple if they were to break up for such a mundane reason.
4. Romance genre isn't Song Kang's 'thing'. He shines better as an actor in non-romance genres.
5. Had they focused on developing Ju Kyung as an individual character who finally learns how to completely take a stand for herself instead of dangling her between Suho and Seojun, 'True Beauty' would've become a more popular and appreciated drama.
6. The love line between Hwang InYeop and Seo Hyun Jin's character in 'Why her: Oh Soo Jae' was absolutely unnecessary and awkward.
7. Jo Bo Ah and Ahn Bo Hyun and an amazing chemistry in 'Military Prosecutor: Do Bae Man'. However, they could've developed a slowburn romance between them instead of abruptly putting a kiss sequence in the last episode out of nowhere.
8. In 'Snowdrop', Eun Young Ro forgiving Soo Ho later on didn't make sense. Their kiss sequence was purely fan service, nothing else.
9. Individual acting aside,Kim Hye Yoon had more chemistry with Lee Jae Wook(2nd lead) than Rowoon(main lead) in 'Extraordinary You'.
10. Writers are overusing 'Let's kill off the main character and make the show tragically memorable' trope wayyy too much.
11. As much as it physically hurts me given the chemistry of the actors,Choi Do Il and Oh In Joo not having any proper romantic sequence till the end of 'Little Women' makes sense to the storyline(the shipper me might've wanted a hug though).
12. Also the writers should stop doing the 'lets make the second lead better than the main lead'. Its annoying to see one person actually making sincere effort for the girl but the girl ends up totally ignoring their effort and like the ML. Not in just Kdramas but in all sorts of dramas. I actually saw a Chinese drama where the second lead finally turned into a villain. I LITERALLY commented 'good for him' lmao.
13. Sunho in 'Cheer Up' is problematic. Neither his sad backstory nor his sincere feelings for Haeyi changes that fact.
14. The Heirs(2013) drama wasted an opportunity to pair Young Do(Kim Woobin) with Yoo Rachel(Kim Jiwon). No, they didn't need to be 'siblings'. I'd have chosen the two heartbroken yet sassy and tough people romance over the sappy romance of the main couple in a heartbeat. And the actors would've NAILED it.
15. Jojo not ending up with Sunho in 'Love Alarm' finally broke the 'Cinderella and Prince Charming' fairytale trope of Kdramas. That girl was too messed up in the head . She didn't need the rich, fierce and impulsive lover, but the quite, patient and thoughtful one. So don't go ahead and say the ending sucked. Maybe they could've made things more coherent, but no the ending didn't suck.
16. Moon Dong Eun should have remained single, with the last episode ending with him crossing paths with Do Yeong, with Yeonjin & gang & all the revenge agenda gone, she could hv offered him a smile and a game of Go, keeping an open ending for them. Lee Do Hyun was fabulous in playing Yeojeong and their chemistry was amazing. But they could hv just been partners in crime with their teamwork without the romantic plot between them.
17. No. Ryu Shi Oh doesn't give second lead syndrome. Byun Woo Seok is a very good actor but he plays the villain in 'Strong Woman Kang Nam Soon' and not anti-hero. Lee Yoo Mi and him should be paired opposite to e/o in some other project in the future but Shi Oh and Nam Soon ain't the 'enemies to lovers' you think it is.
18. After Byun Woo Seok's popularity skyrocketed with 'Lovely Runner', many people dug up his previous works & lamented over not noticing him earlier. People even felt sad that he got his recognition late. But honestly, he wasn't very noticeable as an actor in his earlier stages imo. He kept working hard on his acting skills to get to where he is now. What I applaud about him is not giving up & putting the efforts in all right places but he didn't start from a 100.
19. I'm actually glad they brought back the fresh romcoms in 2024. Got tired of consistently watching crime thrillers, school violence, zombie apocalypse and stuff. I mean, of course they're good. But the key ingredient for Kdramas will always be those cringey classic slightly over-the-top romcoms.
20. Cha Eunwoo's acting in 'My ID is Gangnam Beauty' isn't as bad as people try to make it. His character actually demanded those stank cold expressions that he delivered. In fact, I'd say his character Do Kyeong Seok was one of the first Kdrama male leads that actually understood and empathised with the FL's situation and protected her in his own way without going over-the-top cliche "she is my yeoja and only I can bother her" about it.

Bloodhounds
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
Bloodhounds (2023, South Korea)
Director & Writer: Kim Joo Hwan (based on the webtoon by Jeong Chan)
Mini-review:
I'm gonna be honest: I'm not usually a big fan of these type of movies/shows and I only started this one because of the wonderful Woo Do Hwan. However, color me surprised, cause I ended up loving Bloodhounds. Sure, this story has been told a million times before, but the bromance, the incredibly lovable characters (and incredibly hateful villains!) and the showstopping action scenes take this show to the next level. I'm telling you, it's a really enjoyable experience.
On top of that, the cast absolutely delivers. The show is filled with knockout (pun intended) performances, there's not a single weak link. You can tell just how hard these actors worked to prepare for all the fights and action sequences. Oh, and I can't leave out Kim Joo Hwan's propulsive directing, which left me breathless in several episodes. I do think the final scene cut off way too suddenly, and the sort-of-time-jump in episode 7 is also rather awkward, but I guess it's understandable, considering all the trouble the show went through during post-production. Anyway, Bloodhounds took me by surprise, and I think most people who like action movies/shows focused on hand-to-hand combat will love this.

Immortal Being that Still Somehow has Parent Issues: Myul Mang/Doom (Doom at your Service) Lee Yeon & Lee Rang (Tale of the Nine Tailed) Jeong Gu-won (My Demon)
Added trauma flavour: Parent was murdered in front of them (**Still counts if they survived the murder Parent tried to murder them Dying from seemingly incurable disease which makes their parents/guardian sad (If your parents are alive, you must pay for it by dying yourself) Adoptive parent/stepparent is THE WORST
Somehow has normal, alive parents: Lee Jun-ho (Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Has no backstory at all. We only meet his older sister and hear nothing about his childhood.) Shin Ha-ri (Business Proposal, her family is refreshingly normal, right down to her brother being sent out to find her when she's drunk) Oh Han-byeol (Sh**ting Stars, Again, we know almost nothing about her family, only that she has twin sisters. But she doesn't appear to have childhood trauma.) Park Yeon-woo (The Story of Park's Marriage Contract, her mom being annoyed at her for something that is a crime doesn't count as bad parenting) Lee Young-joon/Sung-hyun (What's Wrong with Secretary Kim, his trauma comes from a kidnapper, his parents faced a pretty impossible situation and did their best. They clearly love their kids) Baek Hyun-woo (Queen of Tears, nothing wrong with them out of the ordinary and they are in the drama a significant amount.) Ha Eun-gyeol (Twinkling Watermelon, very loving parents and the deafness and their reliance on him is not anyone's fault)
*Counting her as an orphan even though she gets her parents back after 20 years, she spent her childhood orphaned. ***This character is tricky because I understand why her mother wanted nothing to do with her, but her trying to manipulate the dad and also saying he didn't raise her properly made me so angry. Uncatagorized due to lack of clarity on parents: Soundtrack #1, Hospital Playlist, Happiness
