Bitter that immediately post unfinished business they reduce Gabriel to comic relief that was never even his character he just happened to be funny while doing some of the craziest abhorrent plot deepening shit in the whole show
I love early seasons Spencer Reid because the showrunners were CONVINCED he was a loser re:social situations and women, when in reality he basically had the bone structure of a model who just happened to be intensely intelligent and women (me, I do) eat that up
and then they realized he was hot and everything started going downhill from there
i know that they just included Mac Finds His Pride at the end of that 'episodes to watch before s16' post cuz they were going in chronological order w the eps listed and they're gonna bring up the dance this season ofc, but deep down i want it to have to do with Dennis Takes a Mental Health Day being at the end of this season and MFHP being a finale that did something unexpected and grounded in the emotional reality of a character somehow correlating to Dennis' ep....
Just want to rant about Kai a bit, and how he is in Season 1.
Because I fucking hate him in Season 1. I'm sorry, but he's just such an asshole. And not a funny and lovable asshole. Just an asshole, whether it's about the green ninja shit or Nya being a girl.
And he does improve after his True Potential episode (due to character development), but prior to it (and actually during part of it) he's just unbearable to me.
And I remember that as a kid I hated him as well during Season 1.
always!!! since u didnt ask for anything specific im just gonna link some ones ive read recently and rly liked, tho i do have a more extensive precanon fic rec list lying around somewhere in my #fic recs tag. no precanon here cause i havent been reading much of it recently - in fact all of this is late seasons. read tags/warnings for all
here are some total faves:
thesis 5 by a_good_soldier (7k, sam &...sam!, sam & dean, sam & cas)
via time travel shenanigans, late seasons sam ends up having a chat with early seasons. literally sickening in the best possible way, perfect distillation of sam and the fucked up awful changes hes been through and his relationship with fucked up awful dean <3. trigger warning for background destiel though (im joking). there are some crazy good lines in this, cannot recommend enough, makes me feel clinically insane. also 20 year old sam eats a sushiritto.
sometimes a kind of singing by adi_rotynd (23k, sam & jack, sam & dean, sam & lucifer)
s13. best late seasons fic ever and exactly what i look for in spn fic and miles better than anything i could ever write, perfectly grapples with every fucked-up dynamic and doesnt shy away from any of it. sam gets cursed and jack can see souls. jack pov is so so good. what im discovering via writing these fic blurbs is that im really bad at describing fic but like. just read it.
the one where things don't really get better by angelszn (3k, sam & jack, sam & dean, dean & jack)
another absolutely excellent s13 fic. can you tell i have a Thing for s13 in all its abusive bunker family core. again dean is perfectly late seasons awful in this - i need to make a fic rec list of well characterised dean. sam has problems with mirrors, jack wants one, and dean is dean. <3
still life by themegalosaurus (20k, sam & jess, sam & lucifer)
s12ish. jess is back. do i even need to say more than that
charmer and gentle by askance (3.6k)
late seasons outside pov of a girl who works at a gas station near the bunker. love outside pov and this one is SO fucking good. sam in this is so dear to me and writing is so lovely
and here are some ive read recently i rly liked:
stuck by howldax (4k, sam &crowley)
crowley gets stuck possessing sam after 9x10. fantastic characterisation and v cool concept . i dont normally read stuff with much crowley so this was rly interesting
low road through the gloaming by jribbing (sam & dean, sam & john, 3k)
ok, i lied, this is partially precanon but only due to flashback scenes, its s7. writing is just absolutely beautiful and heartwrenching. sam and dean are on a hunt, and sam's having flashbacks. tw for past abuse. john is worse in this than i believe him to have been but *shrugs* its fic for a reason and brilliant fic at that.
a matched set by lovetincture (1k, lucifer/sam (referenced, past, noncon), lucifer/mary)
I'm still obsessed with the way these two scenes are honestly very similar, the only difference is the gang doesn't care about Dennis because he's more "stealthy" about being in the closet than Mac was. There is still a written set-up and the punchline to Dennis saying "as a straight man myself... I love pina coladas, but I don't like getting caught in the rain. It ruins my hair. And you know how good I look in leather, [from a deleted scene: and rain ruins leather]." Because in s13 they go out of their way in MFHP to establish the BDSM/bondage/leather scenes in the gay community, so that comment Dennis makes about looking good in leather becomes recontextualized. The very obvious joke, in writing, is that Dennis is very clearly not straight. But the gang doesn't point that out to us the audience the way they used to with Mac. and it's interesting and tragic in a way because Dennis, by his own admittance in s13 Gets New Wheels (Dennis' FOIL ep to Mac's MFHP) when he says "that's a virtue though- stealth", has worked so hard not to be caught (see: in Goes to Hell Pt. 2 he knows all the "gay stereotypes" to avoid that Mac doesn't) and that was for his own survival, in his head, but now it seems like Dennis wishes the gang WOULD point it out- so he doesn't have to come out himself.
It also shows how Mac being out and open about his sexuality is actively shielding Dennis while he's still in the closet which is like. a whole thing lol (which rcgm already wrote a whole episode about that: The Gang Texts) and also kinda validated this in Dee Day when Dennis is standing behind Mac, literally using Mac as a human shield after he has to remove his makeup. hm ...
Sets up the main theme for the season, which is the fact that school shootings happen way too often. We get comfirmation that Nichole and Tolkien got back together since their breakup in S20E2. Stan gets shot at the end.
S22E2 A Boy and a Priest is CANON
Stan has his arms in a cast, which is the only way they ever acknowledge his incident from the previous canon episode, which means this one is canon, even if most of its content is basically filler. Clyde has his birthday party for which is probably the same birthday he invited others in S21E8. Stan also seems to love board games now, which is a follow-up to S18E6.
S22E3 The Problem with a Poo is CANON
This is the continuation of the Strong Woman arc from S21E10, in which she got pregnant, and now she is giving birth. Her children will return in later episodes and get their own arcs. Mr. Hankey also gets banished from the town.
S22E4 Tegridy Farms is CANON
If there is one episode that you won't ever question the canonicity of is this one. If the season premiere set the tone for the season, this one sets the tone for the next season and basically serves a new pilot for the remainder of the series. They were not joking around with this one.
S22E5 The Scoots is LORE
Kenny bonds with Mr. Mackey and while the scooters will appear later, other than their existence, the events of the episode don't matter much.
S22E6 Time to Get Cereal is CANON
How could it not be, when ManBearPig not only appears, after being heavily foreshadowed back in S10. (Yes, I know real life context is different, but by storytelling logic that is what has happened), but Satan is also back for the ride and sets up a new development for his arc, but that is to come in the very connected next episode...
S22E7 Nobody Got Cereal? is CANON
Satan v ManBearPig fight to the death. This is a big one for the series canon, which has had Satan go through a ton of development that helped him get to this very point.
S22E8 Buddha Box is CANON
The Strong Woman arc continues! Seems like this season is really good at switching between a few multi-season storylines to focus on. Eric also gets diagnosed with anxiety.
S22E9 Unfulfilled is CANON
Yeah, sure, why not? Tweek Bros. Coffee is no longer alive, due to Amazon, this might have helped Helen's independence in later seasons. The mall workers are now zombies from abandonment. But this is more obviously a set-up for the finale and that one IS canon, because...
S22E10 Bike Parade is CANON
This is the culmination of the season as a whole. Although if I really want to find a reason for this one to count, we see Ned to be alive after the events of S22E6, which made it dubious if he survived his incident with ManBearPig.

Personal notes: This season is heavily serialized, however unlike S20, not all 10 episodes follow the same storylines, mostly 2 episodes share a storyline and that's it. We have two two-parters and another two that are part of another storyline, a status quo changing episode and several cross-references between them all. South Park keeps finding new ways to handle continuity.
he tries to find his biological parents after s13. it doesn't go well, Lou doesn't want anything to do with him and Lilly is dead so. not fun
in s6 he's having a really bad time over Clouse being back. he still remembers the alternate timeline (everyone does) and has a breakdown over not knowing Clouse's whereabouts after defeating Nakhadan
Cole and Skylor weren't very close on Chen's island, but after s4 they bond over shared experiences. they're besties here
he hates noodles with a burning passion
everyone jokes about how Cole looks a lot like famous performer Lou Brookstone. it's not as funny when they figure out who his parents are
the ninja don't officially start dating until s7, since they were dealing with Lloyd being kidnapped, the alternate timeline and Cole was still adjusting to being a ninja
Cole is much more suspicious of King Vangelis because he can sense magic. when they get thrown into the pit he's not even surprised
Harumi knows about his backstory and tries to get him on her side, but it doesn't work.
he has a teddy bear named Rocky Dangerbuff, hence why he went with that pseudonym in SoG
said teddy bear was given to him by Jay to match Mr Cuddlywomp
he's considered dead in absentia and never bothered changing it
Cole doesn't exist in the legal system other than a birth and death certificate, so it's a pain for the police to arrest him in s6 and 16
he makes a hole in the monastery walls multiple times while learning to control his powers
Kai is very blunt about having found the master of earth. when they go to tell Wu he just says "we found the master of earth" with no other context. Cole isn't even in the room at the time
he was kidnapped at about 3 years old so he doesn't have much memory of his parents other than them dancing
Jay jokingly got him a wizard costume for day of the departed. he's dressed as one for 3 years in a row now
he can actually cook in this au. he thinks of it like potion making except it also tastes good
