some dana (both black and pink haired), dune, and sahara + extra matching icons for @haileyiscooldnfjdhd as a birthday gift and also bc i didn't have time to make a video edit but let's not talk about that.
long message under the cut.
surprise, bitch! told ya i'll be getting back at you. :] though i can understand if my edits are not as surprising as your drawings, but i hope you like it nonetheless. i was planning to make a video edit of dana for you, but like i said above, i didn't have enough time. i doubt i'll be finishing it in the span of one day either. so here you go! i finally had the chance to listen to you gush about your favorite characters, and i could tell they're very fascinating just by how giddy you become whenever you talk about them. their individual character designs and back stories add even more proof to that, it honestly makes me more intrigued to read it. maybe not now, since school is starting for me again, but i would never get bored or tired hearing new stuff about it, especially since it's an interest of yours.
i have to apologize if some of them are not in hd. 😔 i didn't have a source i could look into, and the fact that the webcomic is quite obscure didn't help much.
anyway, it's your birthday! i can't believe so much time has passed, it's like we just met a few months ago. i remember that one particular day in 2016 when i commented on your post, and you suddenly came into my dms shouting my fake name, "KAREEEEN". xD if that happened last year, y'all might have teased me for being one of those angry moms looking for the manager. but in reality, it was 5 years ago. 5 years of friendship — it's one of the things i've been looking forward to the most because i've never been able to sustain a relationship for such a long time, not to mention that we talk almost everyday. i'm eternally glad that you're still here even after everything.
you're nothing but a joy not only to me, but to others as well. you're always so happy and cheerful, making everyone laugh with silly little things, and it's one of the things i love about you. even if you're having a bad day, you still make your way through to comfort us. you're like the sweetest part of a cake, the brightest rays of the sun, and the doriest of dory's — and that still makes you loveable as ever. you're also adorable, y'know? a smile is always present on your face, and you never hesitate to strike even a simple pose for the camera. i will smack anyone who dares to insult you, because whatever they say, it's the exact opposite.
i'm also incredibly proud to see you improve your drawing skills. it's like watching a toddler learning how to walk. :') when you said that you took a lot of inspiration from me, and basically copied whatever i did back in the days, i... didn't know how to react. i've never thought i would able to influence someone that much, but here you are. you're your own person now, and i'm happy for that.
i can't think of anything else to say, but just know i love you so much. you, jil, and ate nic. all my internet friends. without you guys, i don't know where i'd end up in. maybe i'll still be stuck in that dark place where i couldn't reach for help because there's a thick wall and a bunch of obstacles blocking the way. but y'all broke those walls, piece by piece, and proceeded to pick me up and showed me the hidden side of the internet my parents never told me about. so thank you, thank you for everything. thank you for letting me gush, thank you for making me gifts, thank you for being here.
happy birthday, jas. ❤️

Blu-ray Review: Ultra Q
Tumblr media
After working with Toho to bring such iconic monsters as Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah to the screen, Japanese special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya started his own company, Tsuburaya Productions. His first production was Ultra Q, which brought his spectacular effects to the small screen. The black-and-white series ran on Tokyo Broadcasting System for 28 episodes in 1966, setting the stage for Ultraman to launch later that year.
Each episode is book-ended by brief, sonorous narration akin to The Twilight Zone to set the scene. Predating the X-Files by several decades, the show's through-line features pilot/writer Jun Manjome (Kenji Sahara, Rodan), journalist Yuriko Edogawa (Hiroko Sakurai, Ultraman), and co-pilot Ippei Togawa (Yasuhiko Saijo, Son of Godzilla) investigating supernatural phenomena throughout Japan.
Tumblr media
The series opens strong with "Defeat Gomess." Like many episodes, it's essentially a kaiju movie condensed into 25 minutes. Not beholden to a feature runtime, the story is refreshingly fast-paced. It wastes no time showing the monster, Gomess, which is revealed immediately following the prologue with a series of ominous closeups flashed during the opening credits before being shown in its full glory. If Gomess looks familiar, it's because the creature was made from a recycled Godzilla suit. A second monster, the prehistoric bird known as Litra, later appears for it to battle.
While each episode is a creature feature in some way, the tone vary as the plots bounced between genres. Many episodes play up the monster action, others focus on drama, some take a science fiction/fantasy approach, and a few skew toward comedy. Horror is also accounted for, of course; my personal favorite episode, "Baron Spider," is a full-on Gothic horror tale featuring giant arachnids.
Tumblr media
Any animal that could conceivably be turned into a monster was turned into a monster for Ultra Q. Birds, spiders, octopi, monkeys, turtles, seals, moles, stingrays, plants, aliens, and even humans themselves were all transposed into giant creatures, not to mention a variety of entirely original entities. As he had done with his existing creations for Ultra Q to save on budget, Tsuburaya redressed and reused several Ultra Q monsters for Ultraman.
Although their screentime is somewhat limited, the creature effects are quite impressive considering the restrained time and budget. Comparable to the monster movies of the time, Tsuburaya utilized suitimation, miniatures, and puppetry. The series cuts out a lot of the fluff that often bogs down kaiju film pacing while maintaining the social commentary that regularly sneaks in.
Tumblr media
Ultra Q's complete series has been released on Steelbook Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray via Mill Creek Entertainment, who recently acquired the North American rights to the Ultra library and will continue to release its content over the next several years. (The original Ultraman series is also available now.) The complete, original Japanese broadcast edits have been remastered in high definition with lossless DTS-HD Master Audio in its native Japanese with English subtitles.
While 16mm film was the standard at the time, Ultra Q was shot on 35mm and boasted a budget three times that of a standard program. As a result, the high-definition restoration of the show looks miraculously clear, so much so that the wires used to manipulate creature limbs can often be seen. The four-disc set also includes a 28-page collectible booklet, which features a brief history of Ultra Q by SciFi Japan's Keith Aiken along with guides to the series' episodes, monsters, characters, and technologies.
Tumblr media
More than just a conduit for film-quality special effects on television, Ultra Q offered compelling content beyond the spectacle. The groundbreaking series paved the way for Ultraman and beyond, launching a global phenomenon that continues more than 50 years later. In fact, the Guinness Book of World Records cites Ultra as the record-holder for the most number of spinoffs, with over three dozen and counting. This milestone of Japanese entertainment can now be enjoyed from the beginning in its original glory.
Ultra Q is available now on Steelbook Blu-ray and Blu-ray via Mill Creek Entertainment.

Imaginary titans
For some time I had an idea to make a series of draw comparison related to the idea of doing a “before and after” of certain prehistoric animal reconstructions, something similar to what users here on deviantart has done with draws or silhouettes, however, instead of being just one animal comparison, these would be properly chart showing the changes of such animals over the years, based on a specific topic or a specific documentary.
Here, I chose a particular topic to begin with, the case of the oversized animals, creatures that once were considered to be beings of massive length or mass by the paleontological community or in most of the cases, in the popular media, and have been changed over the years with new discoveries or re-interpretations, some of the estimations are quite light in changes which some can still be considered as giant creatures even with the slight reduction, others are really marked such measures changes to the point it seems like a joke that once was considered to be giants at the first place, and some are in the brink to change with a new discovery in any moment.
I must say that I have tried to collect only estimations made in the scientific field both popular (e.g., documentary) and professional, so there will not be estimations made in common entertainment media such as movies (Jurassic Park), fictional books (Kronos Rising) or video games (Ark)
Tumblr media
If anyone has any complain or critic about the information, size, species or anything else, and even some suggestions for others oversized prehistoric animals, you’re welcome to tell, especially if I’m wrong, all for the sake of accuracy.
1) Pachycephalosaurus It seems from many years since its discovery, this large Pachycephalosaur was considered to be 8 meters long, at least the original upright kangaroo posture interpretations which was common in many book illustrations, toys and old media that I guess was based on original ornithopod proportions looking that the head was smaller in comparison with the body. (If anybody knows a better reason you’re welcome to correct me)
Current estimates In recent years there was a reinterpretation of the proportions of Pachycephalosaurus this based on several more complete specimens of others species, giving it a change of look and also of size, now being a 5 meters long herbivore, still being the largest of its group.
2) Ornithocheirus (Tropeognathus) This very fragmentary genus of pterosaur first discovered in UK, was featured in the documentary walking with dinosaurs as a flying giant of around 12 meters in wingspan and weighting 100 kg, being one of the largest pterosaurs ever.
Current estimates To explain a little why I added two pterosaurs, the actual Ornithocheirus (a) which had a very problematic taxonomic history with many fragmentary remains classified to this genus, with around 28 species in total named, but at the end many of these were considered to belong to separate genus, some from the same family and some others from different affinity, with only now one type species, O. simus, being this one around 5 meters of wingspan, and never being 12 meters.
The actual pterosaur which the WWD refer as “Ornithocheirus mesembrinus” was actually Tropeognathus mesembrinus (b) from Santana formation, but this wasn’t estimated to be 12 meters in any point either, the largest specimens so far know in that time were about 6 meters, and the specimens which the documentary were suppose to be base on (MN 6594-1 specimen), is calculated to be about 8 meters of wingspan, being not a giant, but still a pretty large pterosaur, one of the biggest non-azhdarchid pterosaurs known.
3) Amphicoelias fragillimus This species was described in 1878 by Edward Drinker Cope, Being the holotype specimen a vertebra of 1.5 meters in length (AMNH 5777) and a femur, this get lost in some point to never to appear again for unknown reasons (probably due to poor care that destroyed the holotype) and only leaving as a record the existence of these notes and sketches.  Throughout the years, based on what has been left, attempts were made to make possible estimates of the size of this specimen, the majority being inferred that this species has the same proportions of more complete specimens of Diplodocids, giving a size estimation of 58 meters in length, with a weight of 120 tons, making it one of the largest dinosaurs that ever existed.
Current estimates There have been debates about the possible length of the specimen AMNH 5777 over the years, this mostly because the only thing left of the original are only notes which It has been suggested that could contain typographical errors in the measurements or even be completely wrong, and taking proportions of smaller species not always turn out to be accurate or even plausible, so make an length estimation of this species based on the original vertebra turns out to be a complicate challenge. Of course as the chart is about originally oversized animals and then were downsized, I had to see if someone had tried to make an Amphicoelias smaller version with a plausible interpretation to be part of this chart, good thing there is one.
In this case I used thus Amphicoelias reconstruction, being 48 meters long.
4) Leedsichthys problematicus The great Jurassic filter feeder ray-finned fish pachycormid discovered in the Oxford Clay Formation, was subject to many size changes, over the years it was difficult to give an accurate or plausible size estimation because of the poor remains found, at first estimated to have a measure of about 9 meters in proportion to the Hypsocormus genus , but around the 80 the discovery of a new pachycormid, this called Asthenocormus, led to new interpretations of the possible length from 13 meters to 27 meters, based on an extrapolation of the gill basket size, in some cases in popular scientific media mentioned to even be around the 30 to 35 meters long.
Current estimates Some years after the discovery of many new specimens, like “Ariston” (PETMG F174), Dr. Jeff Liston in his studies estimated that Leedsichthys wassmaller than what was thought, being about 9 to 10 meters in first estimations, and in later specimen comparison it give lengths between 7 and 12 meters, also pointing out that linear extrapolation of the gill basket would be flawed because gills grow disproportionally in size for the oxygen demand of a huge body. The most plausible estimations now are around the 16 meters.
5) Kaprosuchus The unusual “boar croc” was discovered and described in 2009 by Paul Sereno and Hans Larsson in the monograph "Cretaceous Crocodyliforms from the Sahara" together with other specimens of Saharan Crocodyliformes. Being the holotype a well preserved skull (MNN IGU12) of about 50 cm, Sereno give an estimated length of around 6 meters.
Current estimates As far I can found, there aren’t any background affirmation for the original Sereno estimations, even more there are been some counterarguments for such size estimations based on comparisons of actual crocodilians with a same head size, as well with more complete relatives like Mahajangasuchus, the most plausible estimations for the actual holotype put the length of Kaprosuchus in 3.3 meters.
6) Quetzalcoatlus After the first fossils were discovery in the Javelina formation at Big Bend National park, Texas, it was estimated 3 probable wingspan size extrapolated from the proportions of others pterosaurs, being 11, 15 and 21 meters, being the middle one choose, but very light in weight being estimated to be less than 100 kg.
Current estimates After subsequent discoveries of small specimens of Azhdarchid and a better known of the morphology of these ones, there were quite a few changes in their proportions, resulting in a more compact animal than previously believed; now it is estimated to have an 11 meters wingspan.
7) Allosaurus maximus (or Saurophaganax maximus depending on how valid still it is) This Allosaurid named by Daniel Chure in the middle 90s, has gone through an interesting history of genus validation based on several specimens since the early 30s for what belongs to it, and even now the legitimacy of this genus is in dispute and with consideration of most of the specimens belong to Allosaurus (As well Epanterias). Something remarkable about this theropod has been the estimates of its length, which would make this Jurassic theropod the largest of all from that period, being at the same level as the Cretaceous theropods in size, with a length of 14 meters in length.
Current estimates It seems that there is no evidence supporting such lengths as the original estimates is considered to being incorrect, the specimen which belongs is probably an 11 meters long animal. Based on Allosaurus reconstruction
8) Spinosaurus The enigmatic African spiny theropod, for many years this Spinosaurid had been one of several contenders to the title of the largest theropods in history thanks to several estimates made over the years, being first at least 15 meters long and with a weight of 6 tons, but by the end of the 20th century and in the beginning of the 21st century this creature get its highest estimations, being the largest based on Suchomimus body proportions in relation on their skull lengths, making it a great theropod of about 18 meters long and a weight of 7 to 9 tons, although some posterior mass estimations give it a body mass of about 11.7 to 16.7 tons. Spinosaurus in this form became a very iconic image for many years in popular culture.
Current estimates Over the years there were quite a few counterarguments about the methodology used to make a reasonable approximation of the length of Spinosaurus, even some making new size estimations giving to this theropod a body length between 12 to 14 meters and a body mass of 12 to 20 tons, although these were criticized too for the theropod choices.
In 2014 things took an unexpected turn with the announcement of a new specimen, the FSAC_KK 11888, a partial subadult skeleton from Kem Kem beds, North Africa, which presented quite different proportions from what was estimated or speculated, showing Spinosaurus as short legged theropod of semi-aquatic habits, However, in the following years the veracity and validation of the specimen as Spinosaurus has been doubted, althouth being asserted in several cases, but not described properly and in full format, even to complicate more the subject, with the confirmation a second spinosaur genus in the region, Sigilmassasaurus, is difficult to assign the neotype specimen to a specific genus.
From these actual proportions if are trully confirmed to belong to Spinosaurus, it is believed that some of the largest specimens could have reached 15 meters in length as was estimated early, and not being the tall creature as the Suchomimus original proportions suggested.
9) Rhamphosuchus This great Miocene Tomistominae (False Gharial) from India, only know by fragmentary tip jaw remains, was once considered to be one of the largest crocodiles ever, with a size estimation of about 15 to 18 meters for many decades.
Current estimates After a re-study in 2001, it was downsized to a length of about 8 to 11 meters.
10) Bruhathkayosaurus This supposed sauropod titanosaur was discovered in the region of Tamil Nadu, in the district of Tiruchirappalli, around 1989, being the remains a part of the pelvis and the tibia, these were referred to as belonging to a theropod by the shape of the Ilium, however, a later opinions determined it as a sauropod, probably a titanosaur around 1999. The measurements given at that time put it as a gigantic animal of around 35 to 40 meters in length, with an estimated weight of 175 to 220 tons, turning it into the heaviest terrestrial animal ever to have existed, aside of Amphicoelias.
Current estimates Did you ever hear the tragedy of Bruhathkayosaurus the giant? Seriously speaking, the history of the discovery of this "sauropod" could be said to be a tragedy since the only known remains discovered by Yadagiri and Ayyasami (those who were behind the discovery and identification of the supposed "stegosaurus" Dravidosaurus which is recognized now as a plesiosaur) were not properly recorded or conserved, these were described poorly, they took terrible pictures of such specimens, they made quite terrible sketches and to make it worse after the discovery they did not bother to collect those remains and the most terrible thing, they left them at the mercy of the Indian monsoons and erosion for the next 15 years after the discovery.
So there are 2 ways to see this in a speculative way given the situation: Option a, in the case that this genus has been what was suggested, a sauropod, the size of this would not have been the one that had been suggested years after its discovery, if an estimate can be made based on the measurements given of the remains, the length that could be obtained would be much less than the proposed 39 meters, being something approximately an animal of 28 meters in length or less, and probably with a much lower weight than previously estimated, probably being with a mass close or less than for example, Giraffatitan.
Or Option b, is just a 2 meter long tree trunk remain and a bunch of rocks with the shape of an eroded Ilium.
So pick one.
11) Kelmayisaurus This theropod carcharodontosaurid from the early cretaceous was discovered in the early 70s in the city of Karamay, Xinjiang, western china, is known from a very fragmentary holotype formed by a complete left dentary and a partial maxilla. The main peculiarity of this theropod came from another specimen mentioned in the book “The Dinosaur Project: The Story of the Greatest Dinosaur Expedition Ever Mounted”, being the species called “K. giganteus”, being referred from a fragmentary giant vertebra column, it was estimated to had a length of about 22 meters, making it one of the largest theropods known.
Current estimates The mentioned “K. giganteus” is considered to be a nomen nudum and the actual vertebrae column remains probably belongs to a sauropod. The original holotype specimen was estimated to be 9 to 11 meters of length making it a medium size carcharodontosaurid.
12) Mosasaurus hoffmanii At first I wanted to introduce estimations made to the Tylososaurus made by "WWD: Sea Monsters" because was emphasized that these reached a length of 18 meters in length, being quite exaggerated with the current estimates that said that they reached 14 meters at maximum, however, I saw that it was more appropriate to introduce a much more recent size estimation mentioned in a scientific article, in this case of the specimen  CCMGE 10/2469 discovered in Penza, Russia, being estimated to have a size of about 17 meters long based in a head-body radio of 1:10 by Russell (1967), making it the largest Mosasaur ever.
Current estimates Giving the point that for such proportions make people draw Mosasaurus with Tylosaur bodies, one person (mention below) took the time to do their research, and as a result, his detailed research revealed that Mosasaurus was quite robust and bulkier in comparison to its relative, giving it a different body ratio and making the 1:10 body-head radio inaccurate. The current estimates make the Penza specimen around 12 to 13 meters in length. Based on M. hoffmanii reconstruction
13) Megalosaurus It would seem strange to put a very outdated reconstruction in this place, however, at the time it had been considered as real by early paleontology. So, Megalosaurus could earn the title of not only being one of the first dinosaurs identified, but also for being the first oversized dinosaur ever, in their first reconstructions created by William Buckland considering him as a massive quadruped lizard with an upright posture of amphibious habits, based in estimations given by Cuvier, this was calculated to be a 12 meters long creature with a weight of an 7 ft tall elephant.
Current estimates After the lizard model was abandoned, the original size estimations were considered to be quite exaggerated with new reconstructions, so most of the later estimations calculated Megalosaurus to be about 9 meters in the beginning and being in recently decades calculated to be 6, 7 or 8 meters long, with a weight less than a ton.   Based on Megalosaurus skeletal reconstruction
14) Iguanodon Like with Megalosaurus, at first Iguanodon was estimated to be a massive lizard like animal being extrapolated the proportions at first from an iguana because the resembles of the Iguanodon teeth with these ones, giving a size estimations of about 18 meters long.
Current estimates Again, like Megalosaurus, the lizard model disappeared and over the time this animals has gone through several alterations in their body shape interpretations, varying in designs over the years until they reach their final form (?) being a semi-quadruped herbivore with disproportionately huge hands, with a length around 10 meters and a weight of 3.4 tons, with inferred specimens that can reach 13 meters long. Based on Iguanodon skeletal reconstruction
15) Megalodon Formally Carcharocles megalodon, It has been a shark with problematic size estimations thanks to its many fragmentary fossils being thousands of teeth and some vertebrae, which has given several measures, from the original 30 meters long Bashford Dean estimation in 1909 based on a jaw reconstruction, being downsized to 13 meters to a time later being estimated with a size of 24 to 25 meters long as maximum length.
Current estimates Actual estimations give a length of about 16 meters to a maximum of 18 meters.
16) Liopleurodon The biggest size estimation given to a pliosaur ever, the genus Liopleurodon had been described as a giant 25 meters long and weighing around 150 tons in the WWD series being based to fragmentary fossil teeth remain, it becomes one of the documentary's most iconic animal as well one of the most iconic pliosaurs next to with Pliosaurus or Kronosaurus.
Current estimates The history of the Liopleurodon oversize case is already one the most known around the paleontological community both amateur and professional, that has caused wars of discussions and lots of defenders as well as opposites, and at the end letting a legacy and the perpetual idea of super pliosaurs, but as far is know, there hasn’t been any super pliosaurs and less super Liopleurodon discovered so far, although there has been wild estimations of 15 meters long specimens of others species, which at the end these became very dubious for how fragmentary the evidence has been.
The estimations made by the documentary were not in some points supported by some scientific article or any authority in the matter like with "Ornithocheirus", just made to get the attention of the public, as well, such measure was doubted even for being a maximum size, and most of the estimations made after based on the original remains in comparisons with others Pliosaur suggested that the actual Liopleurodon was 10 meters long, at least at first, and from here Liopleurodon gets smaller and smaller. Studies of other specimens such as Kronosaurus and the discovery of a complete specimen of L. ferox which shown that the skull was 1/5 of the body size gave an approximate length of 6.9 meters, based on the largest specimen found.

Cole grew up listening to a variety of artists from soul artists such as Aretha Franklin to psychedelic blues-rock icon Janis Joplin. After graduation she began singing at small clubs with her band, Black Magic. Clubs initially welcomed her because she was Nat King Cole's daughter, only to be disappointed when she began covering R&B and rock numbers. While performing, she was noted by a couple of producers in the Chicago area, Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy, who then approached her to do records. After cutting several records together, they passed off the music to several record labels. Most labels turned them down with one exception. Capitol Records, her father's label, heard the records and agreed to sign her.
Cole, Yancy, and Jackson went into studios in Los Angeles to polish the recordings they had shipped, resulting in the release of Cole's debut album, Inseparable, which included songs that reminded listeners of Aretha Franklin. In fact, Franklin later contended that songs such as "This Will Be", "I Can't Say No", and others were originally offered to her while she was recording the You album. Franklin turned most of the songs down but agreed to record the title track for her album. Cole also recorded "You". Released in 1975, the album became an instant success thanks to "This Will Be", which became a top ten hit and later winning Cole a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. A second single, "Inseparable", also became a hit. Both songs reached number-one on the R&B chart. Cole also won Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards for her accomplishments. The media's billing of Cole as the "new Aretha Franklin" inadvertently started a rivalry between the two singers.
Initial stardom
Becoming an instant star, Cole responded to critics of an impending sophomore slump with Natalie, released in 1976. The album, like Inseparable, became a gold success thanks to the funk-influenced cut "Sophisticated Lady" and the jazz-influenced "Mr. Melody".
Cole released her first platinum record with her third release, Unpredictable, mainly thanks to the number-one R&B hit, "I've Got Love on My Mind". Originally an album track, the album's closer, "I'm Catching Hell", nonetheless became a popular Cole song during live concert shows. Later in 1977, Cole issued her fourth release and second platinum album, Thankful, which included another signature Cole hit, "Our Love". Cole was the first female artist to have two platinum albums in one year. To capitalize on her fame, Cole starred on her own TV special, which attracted such celebrities as Earth, Wind & Fire, and also appeared on the TV special, "Sinatra and Friends." In 1978, Cole released her first live album, Natalie Live!
In early 1979, the singer was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. That same year, she released two more albums, I Love You So and the Peabo Bryson duet album, We're the Best of Friends. Both albums reached gold status in the U.S. continuing her popularity.
Career detour and resurgence
Following the release of her eighth album, 1980's Don't Look Back, Cole's career began to take a detour. While Cole scored an adult contemporary hit with the soft rock ballad "Someone That I Used To Love" off the album, the album itself failed to go gold. In 1981, Cole's personal problems, including battles with drug addiction, began to attract public notice, and her career suffered as a result. In 1983, following the release of her album I'm Ready, released on Epic, Cole entered a rehab facility in Connecticut and reportedly stayed there for a period of six months.
Following her release, she signed with the Atco imprint Modern Records and released Dangerous, which started a slow resurgence for Cole in terms of record sales and chart success. In 1987, she changed to EMI-Manhattan Records and released the album Everlasting, which returned her to the top of the charts thanks to singles such as "Jump Start (My Heart)", the top ten ballad, "I Live For Your Love", and her dance-pop cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac". That success helped Everlasting reach one million in sales and become Cole's first platinum album in ten years. In 1989, she released her follow-up to Everlasting, Good to Be Back, which produced the number two hit "Miss You Like Crazy"; it also achieved international success, reaching the top ten in the United Kingdom.
Cole released her best-selling album with 1991's Unforgettable... with Love on Elektra Records, which saw Cole singing songs her famous father recorded, nearly 20 years after she initially had refused to cover her father's songs during live concerts. Cole produced vocal arrangements for the songs, with piano accompaniment by her uncle Ike Cole. Cole's label released an interactive duet between Cole and her father on the title song, "Unforgettable". The song eventually reached number fourteen on the Billboard Hot 100 and number ten on the R&B chart, going gold. Unforgettable...with Love eventually sold more than 7 million copies in the U.S. alone and won several Grammys, including Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance for the top song.
Cole followed that success with another album of jazz standards, titled Take a Look, in 1993, which included her recording of the title track in the same styling that her idol Aretha Franklin had recorded nearly 30 years earlier. The album eventually went gold while a holiday album, Holly & Ivy, also became gold. Another standards release, Stardust, went platinum and featured another duet with her father on a modern version of "When I Fall in Love", which helped Cole earn another Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.
Later works
In 1999, Cole returned to her 1980s-era urban contemporary recording style with the release of Snowfall on the Sahara on June and second holiday album The Magic of Christmas on October, which recorded with London Symphony Orchestra. A year later, the singer collaborated on the production of her biopic, Livin' For Love: The Natalie Cole Story, which featured Theresa Randle in the role of Cole. She also released the compilation Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 to fulfill her contract with Elektra. She changed to Verve Records and released two albums. 2002's Ask a Woman Who Knows continued her jazz aspirations, while 2006's Leavin' again featured Cole singing pop, rock and R&B standards. Her cover of Aretha Franklin's "Daydreaming", became a minor hit on the R&B charts. In 2008, seventeen years after Unforgettable... with Love, Cole released Still Unforgettable, which included not only songs made famous by her father but other artists, including Frank Sinatra. The album later resulted in Grammy wins for Cole.
In April 2012, she appeared as a Pennington Great Performers series artist with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra.
Television and film career
Cole carved out a secondary career in acting. She also appeared several times in live concerts or other music related programs, including the 1988 Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute with sidemen Richard Campbell, Jeffrey Worrell, Eddie Cole and Dave Joyce. In 1990, she (along with jazz vocalist Al Jarreau) sang the song "Mr. President" (written by Ray Reach, Mike Loveless and Joe Sterling) on HBO's Comic Relief special, hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, Robin Williams and Billy Crystal. After Johnny Mathis appeared on a special of Cole's in 1980, the two kept in contact, and in 1992, he invited Cole to be a part of his television special titled "A Tribute To Nat Cole" for BBC-TV in England. It had high viewer ratings and was successful. From that project, an album with the same name was released, and featured several medley and solo numbers.
In 1992, following the success of the Unforgettable: With Love album, PBS broadcast a special based on the album. Unforgettable, With Love: Natalie Cole Sings the Songs of Nat "King" Cole received Emmy nominations for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Program; and Cole received a nomination for Outstanding Individual Performance, losing to Bette Midler.
In 1993, she was among the Guests of Honor attending Wrestlemania IX at Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada. She was interviewed by television staff after the conclusion of the Money Incorporated vs Megamaniacs tag team match regarding her upcoming work. The same year she performed at the 65th Academy Awards performing a medley of two Oscar-nominated songs: "Run to You" and "I Have Nothing", both originally performed by Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard.
Cole made a number of dramatic appearances on television, including guest appearances on I'll Fly Away, Touched by an Angel, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. In 2006, she made a memorable guest appearance on the ABC show Grey's Anatomy as a terminally ill patient. Her character visited Seattle Grace Hospital to have a fork removed from her neck that her husband had stabbed her with during a mishap; the couple had been having sex in public.
Cole also made several appearances in feature films, most recently in the Cole Porter biopic De-Lovely. She appeared in several made-for-TV movies, most notably as the lead in Lily in Winter. Cole was featured on Macy Gray's album Big, singing "Finally Make Me Happy".
In 2001, she starred as herself in Livin' for Love: the Natalie Cole Story, for which she received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special.
She also sang the national anthem with the Atlanta University Center Chorus at Super Bowl XXVIII.
On December 2, 2006, Cole performed for the first time in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, as part of the annual Cayman Jazz Fest.
On the February 5, 2007, episode of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Cole sang "I Say a Little Prayer" at a benefit dinner for Harriet Hayes (Sarah Paulson).
She can also be seen in the last scene of Nas' music video for "Can't Forget About You". The song uses a sample of her father's song "Unforgettable". Cole is sitting at a piano in a cabaret-style lounge mouthing her father's song with Nas standing beside her.
Cole also performed "Something's Gotta Give" on American Idol on April 29, 2009.
In September 2010, Cole performed with Andrea Bocelli in a concert at the Kodak Theatre, for his album My Christmas, in which she recorded a duet with him, and from December 10–13, 2009, she appeared with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square in their annual Christmas concerts. Both were videotaped for presentation on PBS in December 2010.
On July 22, 2011, Cole appeared on the reality television series, The Real Housewives of New York City.
In February 2012, Cole appeared as a guest judge on the fourth series of reality competition series RuPaul's Drag Race. The bottom two competitors lip-synced to her song This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) to decide who would stay and who would be eliminated.
On Father’s Day, 2013, Natalie was in Tina Sinatra's Father’s Day Special on Sirius Radio. It also featured Deana Martin, Monica Mancini and Daisy Torme, all reminiscing about their famous fathers.
Personal life
Cole was married three times. She married Marvin Yancy, songwriter, producer and former member of the 1970s R&B group The Independents on July 31, 1976. She had a son, Robert Adam "Robbie" Yancy (born October 14, 1977); he is now a musician who toured with her. Marvin was her producer, and an ordained Baptist minister who helped reintroduce her to religion. Under his influence, Cole changed from a lapsed Episcopalian to become a devout Baptist. Cole and Yancy got divorced in 1980 before Yancy died of a heart attack in 1985, aged 34. In 1989, Cole married record producer and former drummer for the band Rufus, Andre Fischer; they were divorced in 1995. In 2001, Cole married bishop Kenneth Dupree; they divorced in 2004.
Cole was active in the Afghan World Foundation cause, supporting Sonia Nassery Cole (no relation).
Drug abuse and recovery
In 2000, Cole released an autobiography, Angel on My Shoulder, which described her battle with drugs during much of her life, including heroin and crack cocaine. Cole said she began recreational drug use while attending the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She was arrested in Toronto, Canada, for possession of heroin in 1975. Cole continued to spiral out of control – including one incident during which she refused to evacuate a burning building, and another during which her young son Robert nearly drowned in the family swimming pool while she was on a drug binge. She entered rehab in 1983.
Her autobiography was released in conjunction with a made-for-TV movie, Livin' for Love: The Natalie Cole Story, which aired December 10, 2000 on NBC and re-aired October 26, 2011, on Centric TV.
Health issues
Cole announced in 2008 that she had been diagnosed with Hepatitis C, which is a liver disease that is spread through contact with infected blood. Cole attributed having the disease to her past intravenous drug use. Cole explained in 2009 that hepatitis C “stayed in my body for 25 years, and it could still happen to...addicts who are fooling around with drugs, especially needles.”
Four months after starting treatment for hepatitis C, Cole experienced kidney failure and required dialysis three times a week for nine months. Following her appeal for a kidney on the Larry King Show, she was contacted by the organ procurement agency One Legacy, in May 2009. The facilitated donation came from a family requesting that, if there were a match, their donor’s kidney be designated for Cole.
Death and funeral
Cole canceled several events in December 2015 due to illness. It was reported on January 1, 2016, that she had died the day prior at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Her family stated that at the time of her death, Cole had "ongoing health issues". According to Cole's publicist, Maureen O’Connor, the singer's death was the result of congestive heart failure.
In official news on her cause of death, her family stated that Cole was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension after her kidney transplant in 2009.
Cole's son, along with her sisters, offered the following comment. "Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived ... with dignity, strength and honor. Our beloved mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain unforgettable in our hearts forever."
Cole's funeral was held on January 11, 2016, at the West Angeles Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles. David Foster, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie, Chaka Khan, Eddie Levert, Mary Wilson, Gladys Knight, Ledisi, Jesse Jackson, Angela Bassett, Denise Nicholas, Marla Gibbs, Jackée Harry and Freda Payne were among the mourners at the funeral. After the funeral, she was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.

What’s Next For Fall
The fall season is a perfect time to go see jazz around Rhode Island. As the weather begins to cool and people start piling up the layers of outer wear, musicians ditch the outdoor stages for the clubs and local hangs. Here’s a snippet of the excellent shows coming to the state this season.
First up on September 9th we have local sax legend Greg Abate bringing his quartet to Slater Park as part of the Pawtucket Arts Festival concert series. Abate is a favorite in the area and his performances are always exceptional. Rounding out the group will be Rusty Hughes, Joe Potenza, and Gary Johnson. On the following day, September 10th, head over to Aurora in Providence for the latest edition of the Jazz Revelations concert series. This show will feature The Jake D’Ambra Group (Jake D'Ambra, Warren Pettey, Ian Quinton, Shane Dähler, Clay Nordhill) performing the music of saxophonist Charles Lloyd. These young lions all have a deep appreciation for Lloyd’s music and will surely bring a great energy to their set. A week later on September 17th The Duke Robillard Hard-Swing Sextet will present a set of “Swinging Jazz Standards” at Sakonnet Vineyards in Little Compton. Robillard is a native son of RI who throughout his outstanding career has played in nearly every style with some of the biggest names in the business, including Scott Hamilton, Herb Ellis, Jay Geils, and Bob Dylan.
Looking forward to September 23rd, the “Is This Jazz?” series is presenting a special night of duos at AS220 in Providence. On the bill is Golden Crackers (Tom Swafford, Matt Crane), Pride of Lowell (Patrick Breiner, Max Goldman), and Phil Mazza & Ryan Kowal. Each duo will be showcasing their unique sound and exploring a dynamic mix of intricately composed and freely improvised music. On September 29th at Chan’s in Woonsocket Roomful of Blues will be celebrating 50 years of swinging jump blues. As they say on their website, although their “lineup has changed over the years, the band has always been one of the tightest, most joyful blues ensembles in the world…their winning combination of jump, swing, blues, R&B and soul remains their calling card”.
Moving into October, on the 6th “Is This Jazz?” will be back at AS220 for the next installment of its bimonthly concert series. Headlining the night will be Boston based saxophonist Kelly Shepherd and his group NoMad Stories. When asked to describe the ensemble Shepard writes, “Longing for a world with no genres, we travel the musical spheres with no boundary, touching and reflecting the ancient, aboriginal stories of the earth, and simultaneously reaching the outermost expanse of the modern spheres, acoustic and electric. These are the NoMad Stories.” NoMad Stories has opened for and performed with Gladys Knight, The Temptations, Ray Charles, Buckwheat Zydeco, Bela Fleck, George Coleman, and many more so be sure to come through and see this amazing group of supremely talented musicians. Finally, on October 15th at The Vets in Providence jazz icons Chick Corea and Steve Gadd will be joining forces once again to create mind shattering music. Although this will be their first time co-leading an ensemble, they first came together in the 1970’s when Gadd became the first electric drummer for Chick’s seminal jazz fusion band Return to Forever. Since then they have continued this musical cohesion and have evolved together into a perfect synthesis of unified sound. With them will be a band of fellow visionaries with Lionel Loueke, Steve Wilson, Carlitos Del Puerto and Luisito Quintero.
There are always new gigs being added to the schedule so keep an eye out for more great jazz going on around the state.

Coachella - Weekend 1
Small town jersey girl FINALLY gets to take on Coachella. I swear to all of you I have been dreaming about this weekend since like 7th grade. The fashion, the Ferris wheel, the music, the food, and California - all jam-packed into a short 3 days!
Tumblr media
I just want to start my saying how BEAUTIFUL Palm Springs is. We stayed at a little villa at the Westin Mission Hills...
...I mean
Tumblr media
Day 1:
We wake up, eat breakfast, go chill by the pool and its time to get ready!
Tumblr media
A little salt and lime + sunshine = the perfect start to our weekend ;)
We planned for a “black theme” for today so each of our outfits had that dark undertone to it #squadgoals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Outfit -
This might have been my favorite outfit of the weekend if I had to pick and the fact that I ordered this skirt 3 years ago in hopes that I would one day go to Coachella.
•Top & Skirt: Urban Outfitters
•Bathing suit bottoms: Forever 21
•Belt: ASOS
•Body chain & butterfly clips: Amazon (lol yes)
•Sunglasses: Ray-bans
Tumblr media
We walk in and the used-to-be polo fields have now turned into a runway for thousands of music lovers, fashionistas, and foodies to skip around and love life (because honestly, that's what I did).
We had the iconic Ferris wheel, the sculpture gardens, DoLab, the food vendors, Sahara, palm trees - I was in love.
Lineup: Mac Miller, Crystal Castles, Big Gigantic, Travis Scott, The XX + more!
Day 2:
Wake up, eat, pool, Champagne and time to get ready again. Since day 1 was the all black theme we had to lighten it up. Today, we decided to throw in some white and be all matchy matchy again.

Bralette & bandana: Urban Outfitters
Top: Revolve - Jack by BB Dakota
Skirt: Nordstrom - Topshop lace up Denim miniskirt (must have)

Today had to have been my favorite day. We ate amazing food, drank the best juice, were front row at not only Two Door Cinema Club BUT Future. The best part of it all - Future brought out Drake and Migos. I peaked, you peaked, we all peaked.
Lineup: Two Door Cinema Club, Future, Martin Garrix, DJ Snake, Gucci Mane and bomb-ass DJ’s in DoLab.
Tumblr media
Day 3: EASTER!!!
It sure did not feel like Easter but we woke up and went to Easter Brunch and went back to get ready so that we could get as much time in as we could. Today was, unfortunately, the last day :( I don’t think we wanted to leave.
With only about three hours inside of Coachella itself we wanted to take the day to walk around and explore - we ended up at DoLab (of course) and then after we got food and went around to check out some of the vendors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Outfit: The wrong day to wear this because it was so hot but I loved this outfit.
Top & hat: Urban Outfitters
Skirt: Revolve - Farm

That would be the end of the best Coachella weekend. I had the best time with these girls and safe to say they killed the outfit game in every single way, shape, and form.
Until next time Coachella Valley
