mentioning black velvet, and talking about paul simon's graceland and personal jesus and i have nothing recently, to walking in memphis, to freddie writing crazy little thing called love to miley writing week without you to florence writing morning elvis, then factoring in the number of artists who were simply inspired by him, from lennon to dylan to the stones to hendrix to james brown to elton to bowie to mick fleetwood to cher to springsteen to madonna to beyoncé to lana to harry, to dear elvis, to the generation discovering his voice's power now, to the young women creating because of him, to the 12 year old boy who told austin he was learning guitar and it changed his life...well, look at this list of quotes alone, or the songs mentioned in this thread. and this barely touches the surface of any of it, it really is so tremendous, and almost difficult to take in, just how much elvis influenced and shaped and touches and is infused all over the music that followed him. to the point where there is music that simply would not exist without him. to the point where certain artists might not have been lit aflame by music like they were, or might not have become the musicians they became, without him existing. you can't even fully calculate the scope of that reach. fractals of him glimmer everywhere. the soul of him shines in music that may not even consciously be created in his footsteps because that thread is woven so indelibly. some artist you love created music because they, or someone they were touched by, loved him first. he still is the glitter in the air. his voice is still on the wind. his heart is still something people can't help falling in love with. whose light lasts like that with such infinite sparks? he wondered if anyone would remember him? he's inextricable. music as a source of love keeps playing on.

some great comments from my friend watching black sails for the first time (season 1 finale edition):
“what is silver’s deal in all of this? why does he think he’s the main character?”
when flint pins silver against the wall on the spanish ship: “do people ship them?”
“is eleanor a girlboss? or is she you know a girlboss? in a bad way?”
“how long is the urca gold going to be part of this show?”

silver literally being in love with both flint and madi and billy noticing this and using it to destroy flint by manipulating silver into believing that flint will be the end of madi, to then see madi speaking like flint and looking up to him and not listening to silver, for silver to then believe he lost madi and blame himself but then find out lol she’s actually alive but to see flint tell him to his FACE that madi’s life is not more important than the war which triggers silver into a gay spiral cuz wtf do you mean her life isn’t more important you idiot? when i asked you if you would trade the war for thomas you didn’t answer me which means yes you absolutely would throw the war away for thomas so how dare you not love me enough to do it for me no, i think i’ve seen this film before and i didn’t like the ending, madi couldn’t say i’m her homeland anymore so what am i defending now? you were my crown now i’m in exile seeing you out. i think i’ve seen this film before.

silver's jewish boy swag really goes off the shits he's no one from nowhere belonging to nothing. he's wearing a gigantic cross necklace as camp that's an inside joke with himself only. he's pretending he knows how to cook pork and poisoning dozens of ppl. he's a survivor. they trust him above any won't betray for money. he finds divinity in his beloveds. there is no meaning in his history aside from the world being a place of unending horrors. also i was at his bar mitzvah

thinking about how silver knew or suspected that thomas might be alive almost from the beginning of season 4 and still didn't tell flint like
Flint: Do I need to be concerned that you took almost two hours to tell me about it?
Silver: We are at our least rational... when we're at our most vulnerable. If nothing else, this is a good reminder that without a doubt she is the point at which I'm my most vulnerable. The thought of losing her...
I see.
Silver: If we assume... that we are on the verge of some impossible victory here, a truly significant thing... if we assume that is real and here for the taking... wouldn't you trade it all to have Thomas Hamilton back again?
Flint: I think if he knew how close we were to the victory he gave his life to achieve... he wouldn't want me to.
Silver: I see. Though, that wasn't really what I asked, was it? Assume his father was just as dark as you say, but... was unable to murder his own son, assume he found a way... to secret Thomas away from London...
Flint: He didn't.
Silver: Would you trade this war to make it so? It is some kind of hell to be forced to choose one irreplaceable thing over another.
LIKE PERHAPS THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE YOU SHOULD BE CONCERNED HE IS NOT TELLING YOU
Flint: I know what it's like... to have lost her. And then seeing a way to have her back. I understand what that must've felt like. You asked me once what I would do, what I would sacrifice if it meant having Thomas back again. I honestly don't know... what I would've done. I honestly couldn't say I wouldn't have done what you did. I told you I'd see you through this. Put things back together again so that we can move forward. I meant it.
And then again he still doesn't tell him because he can't, not until he's certain he won't have to use it-not until he's certain he'll have to End Flint because he doesn't want to but he knows (has known this whole time) that he will be the end of him so he hid this Massive Thing from him even after he knew what it was like to lose Madi he Still hid it (this is of course assuming that thomas is still alive and that wasn't just a lie to madi or a justification to himself and flint to make sending him (flint) away to live the rest of his life in chains doing labor seem like it wasn't so bad really (and also ignoring the fact that miranda who was arguably more a catalyst for flint's war than thomas was is still dead and not even silver can bring her back from the dead))
it's just really funny idk what to tell you

the way i feel like e has genuinely made me a better, stronger person this year to the point where it's now so entwined in my being i can't imagine how i'd have found certain moments of resiliency or been willing to examine situations with further room for subtlety and ease of forgiveness than i might even have before and he waited around patiently on the edges until he knew he was most needed and it's felt so healing and so connected to the part of my being that was made to intrinsically love music and

On not watching the ending to the end
I think this is a Black Sails dead dove post. #anti black sails almost.
Being a descendant of colonized people and an appreciator of Black Sails feels untenable because the net effect of the finale is that the descendants of colonizers (and compatriots of colonizers of now) have John Silver tell a black woman, whose people were enslaved, that rebellion against colonization and enslavement is not worth it because it won't succeed on this try after he made sure that it would fail. It's insulting and infuriating. And after punching me in the face, they are going to dangle my favorites at me like, Hey look but Max did OK for herself, and Anne survived and went back to being a kick ass woman pirate! (Thank you to everyone who gave me such vivid summaries). It's too humiliating to endure, and the fact that the show is so entrancingly well made and beautifully put together makes it much worse.
It's very similar to reading Gone with the Wind, actually, except that book wasn't about me and mine, so I'd read along and think, If a Japanese novelist wrote a fun story like this and then had a Korean person depicted like Mami, Pork, Prissy, Uncle Peter or any of the field hands, and insisted that Koreans found happiness and fulfilment in being colonized and self determination confused & ruined us, I'd be homicidal. Arguably, Black Sails isn't directly about me and mine either, strictly speaking. The rub is that there's so much of the now in Black Sails - my liveblog where I intensely identify with Flint and Billy and Max and Eleanor is evidence. This isn't an issue of me disliking the narrative structure of the way the show ended, though I do, and not just about hating John Silver, which I do. It's the fact that the net message of the show's conclusion is to tell you to make your individual peace with oppression, because you're going to fail anyway.
I think my personal compromise will just have to be, the show ended with Silver pointing the gun at Flint and saying "I don't care." Which is the only true thing he's ever said in his whole life. He didn't get to give that speech. I didn't have to hear it. I do not know that Jack Rackham pontificated about narrative. And so on.
