SAINT OF THE DAY (October 20)

Saint Irene of Tomar (born c.635) was a Portuguese nun who was martyred in defense of her chastity in the year 653.

As a teenager, she rejected a respectable marriage proposal on the grounds that she had committed her life to God.

She threw herself into religious studies, intending to enter a convent, until she was crudely propositioned by her own private tutor.

After she sent the lecherous monk away, he told everyone he had been fired because she was pregnant, then secretly poisoned her so her belly swelled.

Believing these lies and feeling jilted, the first suitor sought revenge. The next day, as Irene was walking home from her afternoon prayer, this man’s assassin slashed her throat and tossed the body in the river.

A Christian procession set out to find Irene’s body, guided by prayer. They discovered her near a place now called Santarém in her honor.

Her body was miraculously recovered after being thrown into the river.

She was canonized as a Catholic saint because of the great amount of miracles that occured at her tomb.

Her shrine, the “Santarem,” has played a key role for the great quality and beauty of the Catholic Faith that the Portuguese people have lived, even until today.

Pico Pico Pico!

This is a lil sneak peek into my next sketch board! I said I'd draw @hellishgayliath's oc, Pico and I am :] Been going through their lore 'n stuff and saw that he likes saint bernards! And I thought I'd let him meet an old lady dog, named Irene! Irene use to be a stray dog that lost her leg after being hit by a car, but she survived all on her own. She was loving and caring, but humans never got close enough to rescue her. She had a mate and litter a long while back, but they either got rescued or grew up and left the small pack. She hobbled through life with her three legs until she wounded up in front of Todd's trailer in the woods one rainy evening. Todd, being the saint (ha, get it?) that he is, makes her a robotic leg with the help of Donnie's bots. However, the next day, she escaped out of Todd's supervision and only came back when she didn't know where she was and was hungry. She keeps to herself, but enjoys keeping watch over the pups around the place :]
