Karen Lorene Godshall Hicks passed into eternity on Wednesday, January 19, 2022. She was born May 22, 1949, in Sellersville, Pennsylvania. At the time of her passing, she resided in Justin, TX.
Psalm 37:23 declares that a person's steps are "ordered by the Lord." Certainly, this was true of her well-spent 72 years.
Karen grew up in Telford, PA. In grade and middle school, she won numerous singing and athletic events, as well as competing on the Souderton Swim and Diving Team. As a Souderton High School beauty, she was especially known for her sewing and cooking prowess. She received her high school's Crisco Award for Outstanding Student in Home Economics, the Junior Women's Clothing Contest Winner, and Membership on the prestigious McCall's Magazine National Sorority of the Teen Fashion Board. She graduated with honors in 1967.
She attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, from 1967 to 1971, graduating with honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education and a minor in science. While there she met Darryl Hicks, a student from Oklahoma (He has often said, "We met in a psychology class. She made an A+, and I made a C, which pretty much explains a lot!) They married in Sellersville, PA, on August 14, 1971.
During the next years, Karen and Darryl taught school (Big Oak Christian Academy near Biscoe, NC; and Temple Christian School in Rockingham, NC). For eight years she was a featured singer with The Servants and The Darryl Hicks Trio, touring extensively across the United States, recording four albums, and featured in churches, auditoriums, music festivals and national television programs. They appeared in concert with numerous major artists. Three songs featuring her solos hit numerous regional and national radio charts, and were featured in The Singing News (Southern Gospel music's equivalent of Billboard Magazine).
When they moved to Charlotte, NC, Karen continued teaching at Heritage Academy near Fort Mill, SC, while Darryl began a new career as author and television writer/producer. She also attended Winthrop University Graduate School in Rock Hill, SC.
Major changes came when the couple started a family with the arrival of daughter Charnee and son David. Eventual career moves to High Point, NC, Galveston, TX and the DFW area of Texas saw the family tree flourish with seven grandchildren. Karen's teaching career continued in Texas until she retired in 2004 to travel with Darryl and to enjoy her children, grandchildren, cats and original jewelry designs.
From 1983-2018 she served as an advisor and contributor on a variety of nutrition and recipe books for noted authors and publishers, and from 2010-2020 she hosted Karen's Kitchen, a popular internet recipe and back-story feature.
She was known in jewelry, fashion and shopping circles as "The Purple Lady" for her stylish fondness for wearing clothing and accessories in that color.
For several years she also enjoyed being a member of two Red Hat Society chapters and was immortalized in the song, "Red Hat Woman," performed at the society's 2009 international convention in Dallas, Texas.
During 2021, the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Karen is predeceased by her mother, Mary (Nase) Allebach, her father, Harold Allebach, her maternal grandparents, Herbert and Olivia (Price) Nase, paternal grandparents, Ellis and Mabel (Schurr) Godshall, and parents-in-law Gifford and Mabel (Sledge) Hicks.
Left to carry forward her notable legacy are her husband of 50 years, Darryl Hicks, daughter Charnee (James) Barker, son David Hicks, sister and brother-in-law Sharon (Sheri) and Michael Curry, seven grandchildren -- Daniel Hicks, Richard Bennington, Adam Hooper, Kevin Hooper, Taylor Moreno, Dylan Hicks, and Jacob Hicks, as well as a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
Psalm 116:15 declares, "Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints." Certainly this is now true for Karen Lorene Godshall Hicks as the celebration of her home-going continues among the golden mansions and the heavenly throne room, the inheritance of every believer, to which Karen looked forward many times as she read or heard John 14.
And while her family mourns the unthinkable loss of this remarkable, talented and beloved woman, we also celebrate her reunion in heaven with the Lord Jesus whom she served so faithfully, even as we cherish her memory and strive to fulfill the noteworthy heritage she left us to follow!
A Celebration of Karen's Life will be held Saturday, June 18, 2022, at the First Baptist Church Youth-Fellowship Hall, 101 South Highway TX-156, Ponder, TX 76259. Dress is casual., but you are welcome to wear something purple as a tribute to the Karen's favorite color. A lunch buffet will be provided beginning at Noon, with the memorial to take place afterward. A time of dessert, coffee, tea and fellowship will follow the service. To allow the family to prepare for food and seating, please RSVP to [email protected] if you plan to attend (and how many will be in your party). The response to your RSVP will include lodging options.

«Шерочка с машерочкой»: girls' love in Russian educational prison of XIXth century
Today's post was meant to be another "Russian idiom of the day", but thinking of it I realized I have a bit more to say about it's origin. So let me speak of the first Russian female high school named «Смольный институт благородных девиц» [smol'ny institut blagorodnykh devits], "The Smolny Institute For Noble Maidens".
Tumblr media
It was founded in Saint-Petersburg in the year of 1764 by the order of the Empress Catherine II the Great. Being a great fan of progressive ideas by Michel de Montaigne, John Locke and François Fénelon, she had a dream to bring up "a new sort" of Russian people: more educated, intellegent, refined. So she decided to take girls away from their "rough and primitive" environment at the age of 6, to educate them in a progressive manner and to let them back at the age of 18 in order for them to become mothers of new generation.
The Smolny institute gave birth to female higher education in Russia (before that, no girls were allowed to study at high school), also it was Europe's first state high school for teaching girls. Smolny's girl pupils («смолянки» [smolyanki]) had been learning languages, arts, religion, manners and etiquette, householding, also some arithmetic, physics, geography, history, architecture. A Smolny graduate might become a teacher or a governess for nobility children, or even a lady-in-waiting at the court of their royal Majesty — for those times it was just an amazing start in life.
Sounds great? Yes, it does. But any modern girl wouldn't survive even one month at Smolny! That's because smolyanki's everyday living today looks more like a prisonery, than an education.
Tumblr media
First of all, extremely strict rules determined all aspects of girls' life. Reveille at 6:00, a common prayer and a breakfast at 7:00, and so on.
Girls could move from one room to another only in a column of twos and only by a matron's command. The only outdoor place available for pupils was a fenced institute's garden, and they could walk in it only for half an hour a day, at the scheduled time, in columns and under matrons' supervision of course. Any strong emotion or sharp move was prohibited, for a "noble maiden" should always look neatly and behave flawlessly. In particular, girs were ridiculed for missing their home. Due to purpose of "making a new sort of people" girls were not allowed to leave the institute till they are 18, and even their parents couldn't take them back home for any reason. Those whose families lived in Saint-Petersburg might see their relatives for few hours a month (under supervision too); others could only maintain letter conversations, and every letter was censured by matrons.
Meals were meager, dresses (uncomfortable and always unified, as well as hairstyles) and beds were too light to protect from cold (while temperature in common bedrooms never was higher than +16 °C, in winter it might be only +8 °C). Corporal punishment was not in use, but a common practice was humiliating pupils for fails: so, a matron might stich a stockling to a girl's sleeve if she didn't darn it when it got torn, and make her leave it for a whole day or more.
Tumblr media
So what about «Шерочка с Машерочкой» [sherochka s masherochkoi] thing? Though today it's a funny idiom, representing in a comical way some pair of female friends or straight lovers of a very gentle, tender kind — the background of it is also very sad.
The phrase itself descends from French "ma chéri" [ma sheri], "my darling" (fem.). That was how Smolny's pupils had been addressing to each other; a common form due to the great popularity of speaking French among Russian nobility of that age. But sweet words were not only a tribute to fashion. Most of Smolny's girls had been forming a really strong emothional attachment to other girls — just because, as you may guess, no guys were allowed to the institute.
Tumblr media
In conditions of total repression and distress, girls had found their only consolation in strongest and sweetest friendship, which often stayed then for a lifetime. It might be called a real love and intimacy — even if not including a sexual tension, though we can't say exactly, was it always such or not.
Also there came such a specific institute phenomenon as the "adoration" custom. Due to isolation and lack of social skills it was a very twisted, weird way to express emotions. An "adoratriss" (a girl who practiced adoration) had chosen her idol amongst the institute residents. Mostly it became an elder girl, also it might be a mentor, an institute churchman, a matron or even the members of royal family, who visited the institute sometimes. Then she had started worshiping her or him by writing love notes, running errands (if allowed), keeping every little thing related to her or him as a precious souvenir. Also suffering for the sake of love was required, and that was the weirdest part. For example a girl might have cutted her idol's letters on her wrist with a knife, or eaten the whole piece of soap as a vow to love. Adoration was about a platonic feelings only; so, for example, if an idol man had got married, then "adoratrisses" had started to adore his wife with the same passion.
Tumblr media
One may think all of this was not such a great price to pay for a chance to get a real higher education in the times of patriarchy, which had not even a concept of violation women's rights, but a total absence of them. But was this "real" higher education real indeed? At the beginning on Smol'ny's history, under Catherine the Great — yes, it was. But up to the middle of XIX century the educational concept was changed. Natural sciences as geography and physics were excluded from study program, and liberal arts were taught very poorly. The major priority became external appeal of graduates: nice behaviour and good manners, obedience and modesty, also some art skills such as dancing, singing, playing music, needlework. In fact, Smolny had been training girls to be good wives for noblemen, and that's all. Smolny's graduates were mostly described as unsocialized, too sensitive, even mentally unstable young ladies, who were able to perform decorative functions only.
Tumblr media
Good news is that since 1860 girls and women could visit lectures at the real, "men's" universities. Though they couldn't get a diploma 'til 1875 (when special female higher educational courses started to appear in Russian cities), they were allowed to study as auditors. In 1907 the Politechnical Institute in St. Petersburg started to accept female students as well as male ones. And in 1920 Soviet government finally removed educational unequality completely.
Tumblr media
That's all for today! Enjoy learning and friendship, live and let live!

There is also a head that blocks center stage and the action is often lost behind it. Act two is much better with no blackouts and only some heads on the bottom that are worked around well. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. There’s a lot of chatter and rustling from the audience, but the sound is otherwise excellent. Includes playbill scans.

NOTES: Really beautiful shot in an intimate space. Lots of zooms, but a good amount of wider shots too with a very limited (almost nonexistent) amount of heads. The lighting in this theater really liked my camera and I know the show almost “by heart” so I think I followed the action as well as possible. My battery died during the last song, but it starts at the very beginning with only one drop out during dialogue.

NOTES: An adorable and charming new show premiering at Berkeley Repertory. Samantha, Adam, and Savvy are fantastic in their roles, the music is gorgeous, and the sets are beautiful and clever. A very nice capture with just one quick dropout and one small head that can occasionally be seen at the bottom of the screen but never blocks the action. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums and close-ups. The sound is excellent. The show runs 1 hour and 40 minutes with no intermission. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. A

Amélie - Pre-Broadway/Los Angeles - December 4, 2016 (Preview) (SJ Bernly's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Phillipa Soo (Amélie Poulain), Savvy Crawford (Young Amélie), Adam Chanler-Berat (Nino Quincampoix), Tony Sheldon (Raymond Dufayel / Collignon), Manoel Felciano (Raphaël Poulain / Bretodeau), Alison Cimmet (Amandine Poulain / Philomene), Harriett D Foy (Suzanne), Maria-Christina Oliveras (Gina), Alyse Alan Louis (Georgette / Sylvie / Collignon's Mother), Randy Blair (Hipolito / Suicidal Tourist / Elton John), Heath Calvert (Lucien / Mysterious Man), Heath Calvert (Adrien Wells/Wallace), Paul Whitty (Fluffy / Collignon's Father), Paul Whitty (Joseph), David Andino (Blind Beggar), David Andino (Garden Gnome)
NOTES: This show is magical, Phillipa is captivating, and the entire ensemble is perfectly quirky. There have been a few changes since Berkeley that tighten up the show a bit and make it ready for Broadway. A near perfect capture with no washout, no obstruction, and just one very quick dropout. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans.

NOTES: Closing show! Or “rock concert” if you ask Christy Altomare. Yeah so this is a pretty obstructed video. Everyone was really excited so people were standing up, people were moving around, and honestly I had a little trouble paying attending to my viewfinder with all of the tears streaming down my face. Like Beetlejuice I would say it’s mostly like highlights, but all of the things that happen in the center part of the stage are captured really well and the video is DEFINITELY Christy centric. “Journey to the Past” is complete and gorgeous and you will cry. First act starts around when Anya meets Dmitry and the second act starts during “Crossing A Bridge.”

NOTES: Great capture of this wonderful touring company with no obstructions except for a head leaning into the frame for a second or two in Act One. Filmed with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups, and there’s only a couple instances of wandering after applause (limited to early in Act One) and no major dropouts.

NOTES: This first attempt at a sequel to Annie, Annie 2: Miss Hannigan's Revenge, opened at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. in December 1989 to universally disastrous reviews.
Extensive reworking of the script and score proved futile, and the project ended before officially reaching Broadway; newly surfaced video was filmed from the balcony. Shot between heads, and the balcony railing is visible, but not too bad-you still get a good feel for the show. Recorded at the second night performance. Some generational loss. B
