Superchunk Live Show Review: 7/8, Square Roots, Chicago

BY JORDAN MAINZER
From the Czar Bar to the middle of Lincoln Square: Such is the story of Superchunk’s three-decade history in Chicago. Looking on at the crowd Saturday night at Square Roots, it was clear to Mac McCaughan that not many people knew what he was talking about when he mentioned the long-defunct venue. You know what, though? That’s Superchunk’s fault for attracting a new generation of fans. Since 2010, the band has released three great and one very good post-hiatus records. Saturday night, the crowd was perhaps expecting to hear more of their latest, 2022′s Wild Loneliness (Merge); instead, the set was practically two-thirds old material, including a few deep cuts, geared towards perhaps the very people at the Czar Bar in the early 90′s.

Superchunk’s brand of indie rock never went out of style. Even when baroque instrumentation pervaded the sound of the who’s who of independent music, there were always fans of power pop-bordering on-pop punk to be found, somewhere in between Cheap Trick and the Warped Tour. McCaughan and company’s earnestness never wore off. During the Aughts, the band simply wasn’t releasing music, but as soon as they did again, they returned right where they left off. All of this is to say it makes sense that Superchunk could attract a wide variety of listeners, versatility they showed off better than ever on Saturday. The gentler-than-usual lilt of What A Time To Be Alive’s “Black Thread” found a kindred spirit in the sway of “Driveway to Driveway”, while burner like On the Mouth’s “Precision Auto” mirrored the urgency of Majestry Shredding’s “Learned To Surf” and I Hate Music's shout-along anthem “Me & You & Jackie Mittoo”.

Meanwhile, the festival offered an opportunity for established bands like Superchunk to reflect on themselves and the others playing, how far all of them have come. During their set, McCaughan shouted out the stage’s previous occupants, local alt rock legends Eleventh Dream Day, as well as the Mekons’ Jon Langford and Sally Timms, who both joined Eleventh Dream Day and played a set of their own across the grounds earlier in the day. As for those who weren’t there, Superchunk dedicated No Pocky for Kitty’s “Seed Toss” to the late Rick Froberg, the Pitchfork/Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes lead vocalist who passed away late last month. They unexpectedly ended their set not with a no-brainer like “Slack Motherfucker” but their version of Lou Barlow’s oft-covered “Brand New Love” from their 1992 Tossing Seeds singles compilation. On Monday, I looked at the band’s setlist at Thalia Hall the following night to find there was not much crossover. For the uninitiated and the familiar, every Superchunk show is an invitation to dive in or rediscover something great that just happens to have been there the whole time.

Wussy — Cincinnati Ohio (Shake It)
Over the last quarter century, Wussy has quietly built an impressive catalogue, eight albums including this one that span heartfelt alt.Americana, fiery jangle rock and an almost shoegaze-y wall-of-sheen sound. Led by Chuck Cleaver, once of twang punk’s Ass Ponys, and Lisa Walker, the band can sound like Eleventh Dream Day or a Sally Timms-forward Mekons (Jon Langford painted the cover art). In the silvery fog of “Desperation A.M., you might catch an echo of Yo La Tengo’s Georgia Hubley, but in the more strident opener, “The Great Divide” you’re more likely to hit on the Feelies side project Wild Carnation (Brenda Sauter played a show with Wussy in early November). Wussy touches a lot of solid indie-to-country rock bases, while remaining very much its own thing.
The songs vary a good deal depending on whether Cleaver or Walker sings lead. Their voices are very different, for one thing, Cleaver’s a wobbly, weatherbeaten, country tenor and Walker’s a cool, enveloping, faintly disembodied vehicle for dream pop. Both write songs, too, so if the writer is also the main singer, that may account for some of the divergence, too. But in any case, just to take the singles, “Sure as the Sun,” one of Cleaver’s, reels and bucks like a revival tune run amok on a wild horse. His voice is cracked and wizened, but fully capable of conveying both tune and emotion. The guitars crash, the bass thunders, the drums wallop, but an aura of resignation pervades. “And if there is a heaven, I don’t think that’s where I’ll head, I’d rather stick around and hang with you instead,” he sings, linking the mundane and the spiritual in a very Wussy way.
Walker takes the lead in the other single, “Inhaler” a slashing country rocker suffused in clouds of dread. Her voice is clean and dry in the verse, wobbling only a little with vibrato. But it’s in the multi-voiced chorus that she comes into her own. “It’s a swing and a miss and our hero is down today, and I check the brakes, and I fill the tank, his tornado is pulling away,” she trills, the main vocal line crisscrossed with descants and counterparts. There’s something giddy, something a little desperate about how this song hurtles forward, flinging itself off precipices only to be buoyed by clouds of harmony.
The pedal steel is one other factor that nudges these songs away from indie rock and into Americana, and therein hangs a tale. Wussy’s long-time pedal steel player Jon Erhardt died partway through the recording process, having completed just two songs. It’s him you can hear on the bare and ruminative “The Night We Missed the Horror Show” and on “Days and Hours”’ whirling torch song. Travis Talbert finished the job, adding the lovely glow of pedal steel to atmospheric “Desperation A.M.” and playing on three other tracks. Both add density and feeling to the Wussy sound, a subtle but essential. Likewise, when bassist Mark Messerly switches to accordion on “The Ghosts Keep Me Alive” and, later, “Disaster About You,” it tips the sound in a deeper, richer, more countrified direction.
Wussy is a bit of a cult favorite now, and long-time fans will undoubtedly have different reactions to this late period recording. Still, even coming to them fresh and without any prior connection, the sound is wonderfully rich and varied and the lyrics provocative without preciousness. If, like me, you’ve come all this way without running into Wussy, maybe it’s time to check in.

Percy Jackson and The Olympians Season 1 Review (3/3)
Part 1 • Part 2
What I dislike:
Poseidon appearing when Sally called him. Actually, shout out to that scene because it made me realize a different side about the whole "Gods' worlds view" I had not considered before! The main conflict if this series is the demigods being angry at their godly parents for not being present in their lives, but what we do not see is the human parents' POV. The Gods do not respond to them either. For a human maybe the God was the love of their life, but we know for a fact that there are demigods who share same parent and are the same age. That says it all. Gods sees these "epic romances" as another affair more. Maybe they had a good time and they found you incredible, but what to a human was a few months (maybe years,if you are lucky) of magic, for an immortal God that must be like a week or something. Not everyone is a Hyacinthus or Ariadne or Psyche, sadly. So I don't think he will be answering out of nowhere just because
Percy and Annabeth being already teased about "having a crush" on each other. In my opinion, the first book is to develop their friendship, the next books have the job to do the romance. So it feels like too much, too rushed, too soon for me
There is a lack of urgency throughout the show. Partly, it was because all the monsters walk slowly and never attacked or felt threatening at all . Making the trio miss the time limit made it worst, especially because there was not consequences. The war was supposed to have started, but it didn't because it didn't happen in the books either, so all of that was pointless.
I do not love that Percy has a sassy attitude towards Zeus from the beginning. I feel that showing him being nervous while talking with Zeus in Book 1 is a great juxtaposition to the end of Book 5 when he is confident and being his sassy self in front of all the Gods, shows character growth
Minor complaint about Olympus: all the thrones look the same instead of being designed according to each God. Wish they at least make Hera's golden, that happened in myths, it is canon
In the books Luke tries to kill Percy with a scorpion showing how he really is joining the dark side, here that didn't happen and that is disappointing
Annabeth following Luke and Percy to the woods while she is invisible is weird, isn't it? It does not makes sense why she did that and just makes you question her intentions and if she has done stuff like that before. I genuinely hate it
We do not get to see Percy having to choose between staying at Camp all year or going back with his mom. It is important because it shows what kind of guy Percy is and what his priorities are. He is a mama's boy and he going back to Sally speaks volumes about his loyalty and love for her
This version of Gabe did not deserve to die. He was just some dude, maybe useless but he did not hurt anyone or anything so the punishment is no proportional to his actions. If they town down the aggressions, is only fair to do the same with the punishment. Also, the casting does not hel. Mr Timm Sharp has a wholesome vibe. He really reminds me of Paul Rudd. I can see him playing the role of a loving father just like Paul did with Scott in the first two Ant-Man movies easily
This is not about the show itself, so I didn't know where else to put it but I genuinely love to see the interviews. The cast is super fun, have better chemistry just being themselves than in the show , and overall I have a better time watching them than the show, sadly

Just started the Percy Jackson series (yo ho ho and a bottle of rum-ming it because we don't give D*sney money in this household) and my biggest critique so far is that Gabe isn't mean enough.
This is a man who was confirmed to literally hit Sally, who called Percy nasty, demeaning names, and while I think Timm Sharp is a good actor, I also think they dulled down his character way too much and they made him more obnoxious than actually cruel (granted I'm not very far in, but so far I only have a mild distaste for Gabe, and it should be full hatred)
