finished The Thaumaturge today. can't recommend it enough. the pros are really strong, and the cons are, at worst, annoying, so it's definitely worth the price , and definitely deserves your attention if you're into this genre in general

the pros:

great story. a very personal journey against the backdrop of huge, world-shaping events. tried both endings, both are very interesting in their own ways. the pride mechanic unexpectedly fun and interesting, and adds an extra layer to the story overall

great worldbuilding. refreshingly historically accurate, detailed, plus a grounded but cool magical system

great characters. the supporting cast is especially outstanding, though the main characters definitely hold their own as well. would buy an Ariel Rofe spin-off game right here and now

great art. the environments are lovely, and the characters might be a bit on the tame side, but maybe that's done deliberately to contrast them with the incredibly cool and imaginative designs of the salutors. special mention for the pencil sketches and the watercolour illustrations, those take my whole heart

great gameplay. exploration, investigation, and dialogue are what get it compared to Disco Elysium a bunch, and while i definitely wouldn't go that far (imho, the games are too different to be compared), i'd say they are very well-done in their own right. combat is fun, challenging, with a space to master it and create different builds, but still pretty accessible at its core. even the collectible hunting is very entertaining as well

great for the soul. you can maim, kill, and even psychologically torture quite a number of Russian soldiers. 'nuff said

the middles:

music and sound. can't say much here. there were some tracks i enjoyed, and the sound design in general seems very good, but i don't know shit about this topic, and nothing really stood out to me either in a good or in a bad way

animations. the combat animations of the salutors and the humans are amazing, but all the others are kinda dull

the cons:

terrible voiceover. like, i don't wanna be mean here, but it's just not good. you kinda get used to it half-way through, and some actors do better than others, but there's just a lot of substandard performances here, unfortunately

terrible cutscenes. likewise, a lot of them just aren't good, and most of the time you'd be better off just imagining a good sequence in your head instead

O 11 Bit Studios e a Fool’s Theory anunciaram o seu novo RPG em turnos, The Thaumaturge. Anunciado no ano passado como "Project Vitriol", The Thaumaturge é um RPG tático, com câmera isométrica, que se passa na Europa no começo do século 20 e tem foco em "história com decisões moralmente ambíguas".

"The Thaumaturge é um RPG isométrico com um belo enredo que aborda o combate tático, os recursos de aperfeiçoamento de personagens e as mecânicas de investigação de forma única, trazendo à frente escolhas moralmente ambíguas. O jogo se passa em um mundo carregado de poderes misteriosos e estranhos seres etéreos chamados Salutors", disse o estúdio sobre o jogo.

Segundo os produtores, The Thaumaturge promete "uma abordagem única ao combate, ao desenvolvimento dos personagens, às mecânicas de investigação, tocando no tema complexo dos demónios interiores."

“The Thaumaturge gira em torno da ideia de demónios tanto em termos físicos como metafóricos. Afinal de contas, é um jogo infundido com a filosofia do 11 Bit Studios. Os seus temas são evocado em diferentes áreas do jogo, sendo a mecânica de jogo ou aspetos narrativos apenas uma parte deles", explicou Karolina Kuzia-Rokosz, diretora de design do Fool's Theory.

Lembrando que Fool’s Theory também é o responsável pelo remake de The Witcher, que foi anunciado em outubro do ano passado.

The Thaumaturge ainda não tem previsão de lançamento, mas os estúdios prometem novidades pelas próximas semanas.

After a lengthy time away, Wiktor returns to a Warsaw that feels familiar, yet he is also discovering how much has changed during his absence. The year is 1905, and the city thrives with culture but is also plagued by crime and the conflicting interests of a multicultural society. For Salutors, demons that feed on human flaws and can only be controlled by Thaumaturges, street thugs are no match, just like others who resort to violence to make their point. However, the gift they bestow upon their master—or perhaps a curse, depending on one's perspective—extends beyond mere combat.
