My guess on Penn Station

The SR-71 Blackbird

The SR-71 spy plane, the most advanced member of the Blackbird family that included the A-12 and YF-12, was designed by a team of Lockheed personnel led by Clarence “Kelly” Johnson, then vice president of Lockheed’s Advanced Development Company Projects, commonly known as the “Skunk Works” and now a part of Lockheed Martin. The Blackbird completed its first flight on Dec. 22, 1964.

As told by Paul Crickmore in his book SR-71 Blackbird Combat Legend, in 1981 U-2 and SR-71 sorties began collecting ELINT and other data on a suspected SA-2 surface-to-air missile (SAM) site which was under construction on the island of Choc Tarrie in an estuary near the western end of Korea’s DMZ.

The North Koreans were preparing to shoot missiles in the airspace of an area that had been declared by both sides NEUTRAL.

Nevin Cunningham and Gino Quist, US Air Force (USAF) SR-71 crew, wanted to give their own personal response.

Flying the SR-71 #967 on a two Loop sortie of the DMZ on Aug. 25, 1981, Nevin flicked on the fuel dump switch during a final pass and in quick Morse code spelled out the four-letter expletive:

“F**k” off to the North Korean regime.

North Korean ground trackers who were ATTEMPTING to follow the SR-71 visually were watching. This message they were sending sure did provide lots of laughs back at the Habu’s bar at Kadena Air Base.

The very next day they attempted to shoot down the SR-71 Blackbird flown by Murray Rosenberg and Ed McKim with an SA-2.

Coincidence? Maybe. Or maybe not.

I was very pleased to see the exterior of the Haunted Mansion in the new Muppets Halloween Special trailer is clearly a more finished version of a few different early sketches of the Mansion’s exterior, by Ken Anderson and Sam McKim.

Top screengrab was brightened by me to show confirming details, matching the elevation shown on the right most closely of the double image, but with the style of the second sketch, and with just a dash of Phantom Manor thrown in for good measure (the cupola on the left and the roofline reminds me of it the most).

Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion has been closed for refurbishment until spring. In the meantime, the attraction has been shrouded by a giant scrim of 1958 concept art by Sam McKim. (x)

Missiles look like telephone poles!

A few weeks later, Bob Spencer and I were flying a mission right over Hanoi. As we approached Hanoi, Bob said, “Look out the window”. I said, “Which one,” he said, “Either one.” On each side of the aircraft (we were at 80,000 feet) were SA-2 missiles. They looked like telephone poles and were black. They were wobbling side to side; I guess they were running out of fuel. I felt like I could reach out and touch it.

Following is part of an article by Aviation Weekly about another time that the SR 71 was fired on in North Korea in 1981... Since the SA-2 has only a limited time to ascend to the altitude of the target and to close in, the combination of speed and altitude of the SR-71 (1854 kt, moving at more than 30 nm per minute) leaves only a very small intercept geometry. Moreover, the Blackbird has to overfly the missile launcher almost directly to be vulnerable. If the SR-71 flies above 90.000 ft and Mach 3.2 (or employs effective countermeasures), it will be unassailable by the SA-2.

By contrast, if an aircraft is flying only Mach 1 at 60.000 ft (which equals 573.6 kt, moving at less than 10 nm per minute), its course can go past the launcher with a 25 nm offset and being in the range of the Fan Song – SA-2 combination.

As we have previously reported, the only published and U.S. government-acknowledged missile firing at an SR-71 occurred on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1981. As told by Col. Richard H. Graham, USAF (Ret.), in his book The Complete Book of the SR-71 Blackbird: The Illustrated Profile of Every Aircraft, Crew, and Breakthrough of the World’s Fastest Stealth Jet, SR-71 pilot Maj. Maury Rosenberg and Reconnaissance System Officer (RSO) Maj. E. D. McKim was making their final pass on the DMZ, heading southwest, when North Korea fired two Soviet SA-2 surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) at their aircraft. Major McKim was the first to notice anything out of the ordinary by his DEF system [the Defensive Electronic systems that were designed to jam or spoof any radar or SAM system as necessary and were carried in SR-71’s chine bays] automatically jamming the missile’s guidance system and lighting up his cockpit displays. After he informed Major Rosenberg of his DEF indications, he looked out to the right just in time to see the missiles scream by. The incident caused quite an uproar in the press, and crews became much more cautious in future passes through the Korean DMZ. Posted by Linda Sheffield
