The Pinkertons often brag that they haven't slept a wink since 1850. If they did, people the world over could breathe a sigh of relief – that is, if everyday people knew they still existed.

@liebesherz tagged me to share my next reads so here is a mix of things from my reading list which comes from, like, random twitter/wiki tip-offs, favourite authors’ new works, the pile of things @violetmoods suggested for me ages ago, the books my book club votes against, other. it may take me genuine years to get around to these. who knows. but they’re Next
[our members be unlimited by sam wallman, when i grow up i want to be a list of further possibilities by chen chen, the old lie by claire g. coleman, sea of tranquility by emily st. john mandel, monday starts on saturday by arkady & boris strugatsky, less by andrew sean greer, everything i need i get from you: how fangirls created the internet as we know it by kaitlyn tiffany, a river with a city problem: a history of brisbane floods by margaret cook, beyond belief: how pentecostal christianity is taking over the world by elle hardy]
sorry there’s 9 instead of 6 but i only included one thing tangentially related to my job so that’s a personal win here.
i can never think of people to tag. @areyougonnabe @americachavez @intricateritual howdy if you wish

Have you read The Reposession by Sam Hawksmoor? It's got a decent amount of lab experiment-y content. It's the first in a series but also stands on it's own pretty well (I've only read the first book). I'd also reccomend the Adaptation series by Malinda Lo. See How They Lie by Sue Wallman is more subtle and relatively more grounded, but also like the whole book is lab experiment-y. The Vault of Dreamers by Caragh O'Brien is deeply deeply weird, but has some lab experiment elements.
👀👀👀 i haven't read any of these but i'll definitely look into them!!!
thank you, this is definitely a first bc i feel like whenever i ask for lab book recs i have to be like "yeah unfortunately i've read that already"
also for anyone interested i'd like to recommend the book Dr. Franklin's Island by Ann Halam, it had a decent amount of lab experimenty stuff in it, as well as transformation body horror

A comic book history of the Pinkerton Agency Over at The Nib, Sam Wallman has created an illustrated history of the Pinkerton Agency — the original "private eyes," a nearly 200-year-old American corporation that essentially pioneered the privatization of domestic military intelligent services, most often weaponized against the working class. — Read the rest https://boingboing.net/2023/01/16/a-comic-book-history-of-the-pinkerton-agency.html

Week in Review
Reading:
White Tears/Brown Scars by Ruby Hamad
This is a really good nonfiction about White Feminism/toxic femininity/white women using their femininity as a weapon against women of color. I have two chapters left but I really recommend already
My Brother’s Husband by Gengoroh Tagame
I just started this manga about a Canadian man who’s husband died, so he goes to Japan to stay with his husband’s estranged twin. It’ll talk a lot about homophobia in Japan and it’s written by a gay Japanese man.
The 2000′s Made Me Gay by Grace Perry
This is a pop culture essay collection similar to Girls Can Kiss Now, but I’m not liking this one very much. The author’s writing isn’t for me and she doesn’t go very deep into the cultures she’s trying to analyze.
Read:
Sugar Falls: A Residential School Story by David A. Robertson
This was a short but haunting graphic novel about Canadian residential schools. It’s informative and character focused. I won’t say I liked it per say, but I’m glad I read it.
Our Members Be Unlimited: a comic about workers and their unions by Sam Wallman
This was a graphic novel about the history and current implementation of unions. It was long and very informative. I learned a lot, but I was definitely bored during most of it. I also feel it was weirdly negative towards anarchists.
Ejaculate Responsibly: A Whole New Way to Think About Abortion by Gabrielle Stanley Blair
This was a short essay collection about how society puts all the blame of pregnancy on women, when it’s the man’s irresponsible ejaculation that causes it. It was decent and gave me a lot of interesting points of view, but it was really repetitive. She also had a disclaimer at the beginning about how she was going to use heteronormative, bioessential language, but it felt like she could have put in some effort.
Watching:
Community
I’m continuing to watch this with my fiancee. We made it to the forbidden “black face” episode, which was very difficult to find. Streaming services really should just put a warning instead of trying to scrub its existence. Anyway, I’m enjoying Community. It’s very unique compared to other sitcoms.
Fruits Basket (2019)
My fiancee and I just started watching Fruits Basket (2019). She hasn’t seen the older one while I have and I’ve read half the manga series. It was hard to get used to the voice actors at first, but I’m really enjoying it.
Cardcaptor Sakura
I went to an anime convention last week, so I’m really in an anime mood. I watched the first episode of Cardcaptor Sakura (I meant to watch more but took an accidental nap). It’s so adorable and easy to watch. I’ll absolutely be continuing.
Listening:
Cozy Ghibli Vibes playlist by underneaththeblue on Spotify
I’m in an especially cozy mood and this playlist has music that makes me want to drink hot cocoa while a storm rages outside.
Cozy Club podcast by Monica & Regan
I’ve watched both Monica and Regan on YouTube before, but didn’t know they had a podcast. I only listened to the latest episode, but it was cute and a good way to make my walks go faster.

“The images of working people fighting each other over toilet paper shouldn’t fill you with feelings of contempt or superiority because you’re not ‘stooping’ to that, it should fill you with a profound sadness at what capitalism can do to people when alienation overwhelms us. A profound sadness, but also a rage at the system that produces this behavior, and a desire to smash it. Don’t laugh at those people. Don’t call them stupid. Instead, think about what you’re doing to build a system in which scarcity is no longer an issue.”

Poster by Sam Wallman mocking the attitude among conservative Australians toward different national holidays.
The right side of the poster portrays an “ANZAC day” procession. A militarist annual holiday on the 25th of April, which is used by politicians to glorify past imperialist wars, and to drum up support for future imperialist ventures. The official slogan of the holiday is “Lest we forget”.
The left side of the poster portrays an Invasion day march, held every year on “Australia Day” the 26th of January, which marks the arrival of the British Empire’s ‘First Fleet’ in 1788.
