Flufftober Day 20 — Kurt x Baba Yaga
Secret Crush
Tumblr media
Rating: G
Characters: Yekaterina | Baba Yaga, Kurt Goreshter
Word Count: 1,048
Disclaimer: This takes place before the events of "The Season of the Witch"
📰💗📰💗📰💗📰💗📰💗📰💗📰💗📰💗
The world had gone to shit. The Avengers had lost with the worst consequences. Half of every living thing had disappeared into dust, and their energy ceased to exist.
Yekaterina had watched as the humans deteriorated without half of their population. Several areas became unpopulated hellscapes, especially the borders of cities. She had never seen anything like this before in her 1,300 years: the world was sick and depressed, but everyone was numb. There was no fear left towards her, but she did not fault the humans for that.
Yekaterina sat at a bus stop bench with her sandwich and began to tuck in. There were only a few restaurants and shops left open out of necessity for the remaining populace, so she took advantage of them. As a Dieva, large quantities of human food and drink could sustain her for a short time, but her source of magic and energy stemmed from the fear people garnered of Baba Yaga through the stories she had sowed and perpetuated for centuries.
In fact, that was her reason for currently being in San Francisco. Before the Destruction, she had felt a surge of fear towards her (the largest she had felt in years), and she had decided to come and find the source. The fear subsided quickly, and then the Destruction happened just as she had made her way to the bay city.
Yekaterina finished her meal and threw the papers away. She stood and began to make her way down the street. Many of the storefronts were covered with missing posters, detailing the names of people who had not been heard of since the Destruction. Her heart ached as she viewed the hundreds of pictures, reminding her of her own losses.
She stopped in front of one store, seeing that some of the posters’ edges had lost their stickiness. Yekaterina sighed and began to try and smooth the posters back onto the glass.
“You lose someone?” came a Russian accented voice next to her.
Yekaterina looked up and blinked. The man who had spoken to her held a concerned expression with his sad, dark eyes. He was tall, and he was rather handsome, but the thing that caught Yekaterina off-guard was his energy. He was the source of the fear she had sensed.
She opened and closed her mouth before glancing between him and the posters. “No, I was fixing these. They will not stay up,” she replied.
The man smiled, a beautiful thing. He gestured with the papers in his hand. “Vy tozhe govorite po?” he asked, referencing her Russian accent. You speak Russian, too?
Yekaterina blushed lightly. “Da, ya khochu,” she replied. Yes, I do.
The man chuckled as he sidled up next to Yekaterina and took a tape dispenser out of his pocket. He held up the papers for her to see: his own missing posters. He then took one, placing the rest underneath his arm, and held it up to the glass. Yekaterina reached out to help him hold it up while he tore off a piece of tape.
“What part of Russia?” he asked after a moment.
“Outside of St. Petersburg,” she fibbed. Yekaterina had at one point lived outside of St. Petersburg, but she did not want to reveal that she had lived all over Russia because she was Baba Yaga.
The man nodded as he taped the four corners of the first poster. It advertised a man named Scott Lang. He took another poster and began to do the same, and Yekaterina helped again. “Suvorov.” He held his index finger and thumb close together. “Very small town.”
Yekaterina chuckled. “Yet here you are in San Francisco,” she countered.
The man shrugged and smirked. “So are you.”
The second poster belonged to Hope Van Dyne.
“Seeing the sights?” he asked jokingly, pulling out a third poster.
Yekaterina shook her head, observing the third poster: Dave Foster. “Looking for someone.”
The man looked up at the posters that were already hung and brought out the fourth one. “Udachi.” Good luck.
“Don’t worry. I already found him,” Yekaterina said, grinning.
The man’s dark eyebrows pitched up. “Him,” he repeated.
“Da,” she replied.
Janet Van Dyne was on the fourth poster.
“Why are you here in San Francisco?” Yekaterina asked, reaching up to hold the fifth poster up.
The man smiled smugly. “I am something of computer wizard,” he said with all the confidence in the world. He nodded his head upwards, and Yekaterina looked up to see a neon sign that read ‘X-Con Security Consultants.’
“Ah,” she said, not really knowing what he meant. She had used human technology before, but it was extremely confusing.
The man stepped back and admired his handiwork after taping the final corner of the fifth poster belonging to Hank Pym. He then turned his head to face Yekaterina. “So, if you need anything from home security or your digital footprint fixed…” He winked at her, and her stomach flipped. “We can help.”
Yekaterina shrugged. “I would not know who to call.”
The man’s expression faltered as he pointed to the logo on his jacket that matched the sign above them. “X-Con…” he murmured.
Yekaterina laughed. “No, you. Your name,” she clarified.
The smile returned to the man’s lips. He held out his hand for her to shake. “Kurt. Goreshter.”
Yekaterina shook his hand. “Yekaterina Svarogova,” she introduced.
Kurt smiled, seemingly pleased at learning her name. “Krasivoye imya.” A beautiful name.
Yekaterina glanced away, blushing furiously this time. Kurt began to step away, but he pointed at the posters and said, “Thank you for your help.”
She nodded and waved as he smiled once more at her and opened the door to X-Con before disappearing inside. She kept her gaze locked on the door as she realized that, even though she had meant Kurt’s fear to be her new energy source, she could not shake this new feeling that billowed inside her like her own magic. Yekaterina turned away and smiled as she continued walking down the street. Kurt was now her secret crush after only meeting him once.
As she made her way back to her house, she envisioned all the ways she could bump into him before she finally would reveal her true self.

2021: Full-Time Drivers
Up to date as of 3/4/2021.
(Under a cut because this is going to be a looooooong post as usual)
(Yes I used last year’s official mugshots don’t @ me)
Sebastian Bourdais
Tumblr media
A four-time ChampCar champion, he has also raced in F1 for Toro Rosso and competed in both the 24 hours of Le Mans and the 24 hours of Daytona. One of the most experienced drivers on the grid. In the six seasons he has spent in Indycar, he has competed in 74 races, had six wins, and two poles. Last season he only raced in three events for A.J. Foyt Enterprises, and competed in the IMSA WeatherTech Series. This season he will race the 14 entry for A.J. Foyt Enterprises.
Scott Dixon
Tumblr media
No one really knows how he is so good at racing in Indycar. He is the defending champion going into this season and has a total of six Indycar championships and one Indy 500 title to his name. He has often been compared to Lewis Hamilton. In the 18 seasons he has spent in Indycar, he has competed in 289 races, had 49 wins, and 29 poles, and is one of the winningest drivers in Indycar history. This season he will continue to race the 9 entry for Chip Ganassi Racing.
Marcus Ericsson
Tumblr media
After competing in 97 races for the Sauber F1 Team, he signed with Chip Ganassi and began racing in Indycar. He will be starting his third full season in the sport. In his previous two seasons, he competed in 18 races and has one podium finish. He will continue to drive the 8 entry for Chip Ganassi Racing.
Jack Harvey
Tumblr media
He competed in many forms of racing prior to his Indycar debut in 2017 including British F3, GP3, and Indy Lights, and was the 2012 British F3 champion. Prior to 2020, he drove only part-time for Meyer-Shank Racing as they tried to find their way into the series full-time. In the four seasons he has raced in Indycar, he competed in 29 races and has one podium finish. He will continue to race the 60 entry for Meyer-Shank Racing in his second full season.
Colton Herta
Tumblr media
He staked his name in the history books by becoming the youngest Indycar race winner at COTA in 2019. The son of Brian Herta, he has quickly become a fan-favorite and a strong competitor. In his two seasons (plus the season finale of 2018) in Indycar, he has competed in 32 races, had three wins, and four poles. This season he will drive the 26 Andretti Autosport entry, taking over the car vacated by Zach Veach.
James Hinchcliffe
Tumblr media
A fan favorite, returning to full-time status this season. Makes a podcast with Alexander Rossi called ‘Off Track with Hinch and Rossi’. Has also competed on Dancing with the Stars and was a part time broadcaster for NBCSN. In his 10 seasons in Indycar, he has achieved six wins, 17 podium finishes, and one pole position. This season he will drive the 29 entry for Andretti Autosport.
Ryan Hunter-Reay
Tumblr media
Affectionately nicknamed ‘Captain America’, and the victim of an unfortunate sandwich meat ad campaign. He was crowned series champion in 2012 and became Indy 500 champion in 2014. He can often be seen on the grid with his two kids, often dressed in mini firesuits to match. In his 14 seasons, he has competed in 211 races, had 16 wins, and six poles. He will continue to race the 28 entry for Andretti Autosport.
Ed Jones
Tumblr media
Not a familiar face to new fans, but he’s done this song and dance before. He last raced in Indycar in 2018, and has raced previously for Dale Coyne Racing, Chip Ganassi Racing, and Ed Carpenter Racing. This will be his first official racing ride since the 2018 season. In his previous three seasons, he scored three podium finishes. This season, he will race the 18 car for Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan.
Dalton Kellett
Tumblr media
He is much less frightening than the above picture makes him out to be (I promise). He has worked his way up the Road to Indy ladder and made his Indycar debut last season, driving part time for A.J. Foyt Enterprises, while also competing in the IMSA WeatherTech Series. Makes a podcast called D2Speedcast. He competed in five races last season and his best finish was 20th at Road America (both). This season he will race the 4 entry for A.J. Foyt Enterprises in his first full season in Indycar.
Scott McLaughlin
Tumblr media
One of only two rookies on the Indycar grid this season (but can either of them really be called rookies?). He is a three-time Australian Supercars champion and raced for Team Penske before they decided to pull their Supercars program. He made his debut in the season finale of the 2020 season at St. Petersburg though he failed to finish. He will race the 3 entry for Team Penske.
Josef Newgarden
Tumblr media
He is a two-time Indycar Series champion, an Indy Lights champion, and a strong fan favorite. He has starred in many PR campaigns such as “Josef Newgarden Incognito”, “The Offseason”, “Shirts4Sage”, and “The Penske Games”. Has a vlog titled #AdmitOne. In his nine seasons in Indycar, he has competed in 148 races, has 18 wins, and 11 poles. He will drive the 2 entry (formerly the 1 entry) for Team Penske.
Pato O’Ward
Tumblr media
Another driver who ascended to Indycar through the Road to Indy program, he was the Indy Lights Champion in 2018. Last season was his first full season in Indycar, though he’s raced part time before then. Came oh so close to having his first Indycar win last season, but couldn’t make it to that top step of the podium. In his previous three years in Indycar, he has four podium finishes and one pole position. This season he will continue to race the 5 car for Arrow McLaren SP.
Simon Pagenaud
Tumblr media
Can hula-hoop on a regular day (not really). He is the 2016 series champion and the 2019 Indy 500 Champion. As evidenced by the Penske Games, good at racing and not party games. His dog Norman is also pictured on his Baby Borg-Warner Trophy. In his previous 10 seasons, he has achieved 15 wins, 35 podium finishes, and 14 pole positions. This season, he will continue to drive the 22 entry for Team Penske.
Alex Palou
Tumblr media
He has competed previously in Super GT, Super Formula, and F3 European Championship. Last season was his rookie season driving for Dale Coyne Racing, and he achieved one podium finish. This season, he will race the 10 car for Chip Ganassi Racing.
Will Power
Tumblr media
If you’re not following his Instagram you’re missing out. One of the most successful active drivers in Indycar. He is the 2014 series champion and 2018 Indycar champion. In his 13 seasons in Indycar (not including the three years in Champ Car prior to the merge), he has achieved 37 wins, 70 podium finishes, and 52 pole positions. This season he will continue to drive the 12 entry for Team Penske.
Graham Rahal
Tumblr media
He’s the son of 1986 Indy 500 Champion Bobby Rahal, and an avid car guy. Owns a performance shop and regularly hosts Cars and Coffee there. Probably the tallest driver in the paddock. In his previous 13 seasons, he has achieved six wins, 25 podium finishes, and three pole positions. This season he will continue to drive the 15 entry for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.
Felix Rosenqvist
Tumblr media
One of two Swedes currently racing in the Indycar Series. He has previously raced in DTM and F3 European Championship. In his previous two seasons in Indycar, he has achieved one win, three podiums, and one pole position. This season, he will race the 7 car for Arrow McLaren SP.
Alexander Rossi
Tumblr media
A fan favorite, but can’t do donuts correctly. Makes a podcast with James Hinchcliffe called ‘Off Track with Hinch and Rossi’ where they talk about everything except racing. He is the 2016 Indy 500 Champion and has raced in F1 for Marussia. In his five seasons in Indycar, he has achieved seven wins, 23 podiums, and six pole positions. This season he will continue to race the 27 entry for Andretti Autosport.
Takuma Sato
Tumblr media
Nicknamed ‘Taco’ by his team, currently the only Japanese driver in the field. He is the defending Indy 500 champion and has won the 500 twice. Previously raced in F1 for Jordan, BAR, and Super Aguri. In his 11 seasons in Indycar, he has achieved six wins, 14 podium finishes, and 10 pole positions. This season he will continue to race the 30 entry for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.
Rinus VeeKay
Tumblr media
The only Dutch driver on the grid, last season’s Rookie of the Year. He is also the 2018 Pro Mazda Champion and has also raced in Indy Lights. In his rookie year in Indycar, he achieved one podium finish and one pole position. This season he will continue to race the 21 entry for Ed Carpenter Racing.

"HOW TO CRACK THE STRANGE"
by Morning Breath
In 1996 Doug Cunningham and Jason Noto started working together at a San Francisco skateboard company. Developing a successful collaborative style, six years later the duo decided to launch their own boutique agency in Brooklyn, Morning Breath, and expanded their business to include packaging, apparel, advertising, poster design, and more. While in the years since they have begun splitting their time between collaborative commercial work and personal work, in late 2019 the pair traveled to St Petersburg, Florida, to participate together in the annual @ShineOnStPete festival. Buried in this pop-art composition on the side of Coney Island Sandwich Shop on Dr MLK Jr St N, Morning Breath included an homage to Casey Paquet, one of the founding members of the SHINE festival who passed away the previous year.  @morningbreathinc/

Bodega on Central in St. Petersburg, Florida
It's been six years but I looked Bodega on Central up online & everything looks great. It might be time to make the drive to St. Petersburg for a revisit.
A few years back, Bodega on Central (1120 Central Ave 1180 Central Ave, St. Petersburg, Florida) had just closed its doors for the day as my wife Marcela and I had arrived. We were down the street at an antique shop that suggested we check out their Frita Cubana. Since then, it has stuck in my mind. Table Decor I should preface this Medianoche and Cuban Sandwich discussion with a disclaimer.…

Thursday 3 January 2002 - Train to Budapest - spot the Little Princess - Metro Museum visit - Buda Castle and view of the Danube
Hi everyone!  Grüezi mitenand!   Hallo allerseits!   Üdv mindenkinek!   Ahoj všetci!
Twenty years ago today I visited Budapest for the first time during the winter.  I previously visited Budapest in the summer of 1998.  I wanted to visit a few places that I had not already been.
I woke up about 6 AM, and had a bath, as my bathroom at the Klastrom did not have a shower.  Then I went downstairs to eat breakfast from the breakfast buffet.  They had scrambled eggs, fried sausage, vegetables, fruits, coffee, fresh bread rolls, and orange juice.  It was included in the overnight stay.
I walked to the rail station to catch the 8 AM train from Györ to Budapest Déli Pályaudvár.  It went from Györ through Tata, Tatabánya, Budaörs and stopped at Budapest Kelenföldi before ending at Déli.  Along the way, the train passed close to the Slovak border, so when I brought my radio with me, I could receive stations from Slovakia.  At Déli there was a metro connection, so I had to buy a day ticket, or a "napijegy".  In 1998 I had trouble pronouncing that word, but in 2002 I had practiced it enough to be understood.  The napijegy cost 750 Forint and was valid for the entire day.  I took the M2 to Déak Tér and changed to the M1 to Vörösmarty Tér.  At Vörösmarty Tér was the northern end of the pedestrian street Váci utca.  Also the location of where I bought some CDs was there but the record shop had closed down.  I walked down Váci utca to Vigadó tér where there was the Little Princess Statue and a nice view across the Danube of the Buda castle.
I walked along Váci ut, and saw an ad for the herbal digestive liquor Unicum.  I had seen a similar ad in August 1998 when I last visited.  I turned left on Kossuth Lajos utca, past Ferenciek Tere to Astoria.  At Astoria, the Synagogue was under construction, and was not opened for tours until mid-January 2002.  I returned February 2006 and went on a tour.  I took the metro M2 to Déak Tér, and at the top of the escalator was the metro museum.  It was located in the former location of the metro stop of the 1896-built M1.  The other two lines at the time, M2 and M3 were built during the communist era and thus had subway cars that were from the USSR, the same as those used in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Prague, Warsaw, and Sofia.
After that, I took the M2 to Keleti Pályaudvár to inquire about a return train to Györ, picked one for about 5 PM, returned to Déak Tér and I took the M3 train up to Újpest-Központ, which was the northern end.  In August 1998 I had been to the southern end at Köbánya-Kispest.  Újpest did not have much interesting to see, but at least I was able to go as far north on the metro.
I took the metro M3 to Déak Tér and changed to M1 and went to Oktogon and changed to a tram to Margit Híd.  Then I transferred to the HÉV line to Batthyány tér.  I took M2 to Déli Pályaudvár and ordered a salami sandwich at one of the food vendors.  I had a local beer with that.  I took the M2 to Batthyány tér and then a tram to Clark Ádám tér where the cable car to the Buda castle was located.  My napijegy was not accepted so I had to pay an extra 250 Forint for the upwards journey.  I think it was about 3 PM and there was not much sunlight left.  I went on the south side first, making sure that I saw the dozens of Hungarian flags flying, as well as the eagle statue.  I walked to the fisherman's bastion next to the Matthias Church.  I had a nice view of the Danube, but it was getting dark, so I had to find a way back to Keleti.
I took a minibus from the Matthias Church, to the station Széll Kálmán tér and then the M2 to Keleti.  It was about 4:30 PM when the sky went black.  There was a train to Györ that left about 5 PM and would arrive about 6:30 PM, just in time for me to have supper at the Klastrom restaurant.  When it was time to board the train, I found a seat in first class.  The train seemed to be from the 1980s, when communism was still part of Hungary.  Its heat was okay, was not air conditioned and the toilet was an open system.  Once the train left Budapest, I took out my radio, tuned in some music, and one song that I recorded to blank tape was "Könnyek a szemedben" by Fehér Csoki.  I thought this was by the band Manhattan, as I have the 1997 CD "Ugyanaz a tüz" and one of the voices was familiar.  Csoki went solo sometime after 2000, and he was a member of Manhattan from the early 1990s.
The train arrived in Györ about 6:30 PM.  It was a cold walk to the hotel, but at least it was not snowing.  I was able to eat supper as they were still serving.  I ordered the beef goulash and a beer.  It was very good.  Then I went up to my room and watched more videos before going to sleep.
Tomorrow, I take the train from Györ to Vienna, step down with full luggage to the track floor, buy a 72 hour ticket in Euro, take the Lokalbahn from Meidling to Karlsplatz, buy a round trip ticket from Vienna Südbahnhof to Bratislava Hlavni Stanica, and enjoy some roasted chestnuts and potato pancakes.
Hope you will join in tomorrow’s adventure!
Ich hoffe, Ihr nehmt am morgigen Abenteuer teil!
Remélem, csatlakozol a holnapi kalandhoz!
Dúfam, že sa zapojíte do zajtrajšieho dobrodružstva!

Very modern is the best way to describe Helsinki. A modern well laid out city that was burnt down in 1809 and the Russian architect that re-designed the city, while very basic, ensured the areas of the city never clashed. Industry in one area only, business and government in another and community seperate. That is probably just as well as Helsinki produces over two thirds of the worlds ice breakers with a massive ship building industry. The ferry over was pleasant and smooth even though it rained. The people movement planning on both sides would have made Disney designers very happy. The motels we are staying at has a medieval appearance until you enter where a maze of tunnels and stairs takes you to modern rooms, however very small. I must mention straight up they are the most expensive motel we have drunk (8 euro a beer) and the bar staff have a disease that stops them from seeing the top of the glass. Seriously I would be very happy to have an ice cream that had such a head. Haha As you can not get into your rooms until after 3pm we did a long walk down to the markets where Rhondda thought she was in heaven. Huge salmon being cooked on hot plates, which off course we had to have. I personally think the best we have ever had. Back to our motel, followed by a few to many very expensive beers and a sandwich from local "k" supermarket (we forgot to go for tea) and off to bed. Met some long retired teachers from Woolongong region, Helen and Les, and the stories and laughs were what travelling should be about. Day two in town we did the usual city tour and while Helsinki is relatively small the bus drivers and tour guides are experts at driving the long way round to pad out the time. First stop, the biggest church ever overlooking an old time town square following by a park where they had a memorial to one of their great music writers. From here to the locals (we were told) market where you could buy great food but not sure the average local would shop here due to the cost. Helsinki has to be the most expensive city we have been to so far this trip. I believe from what we see and hear that Finland as a country is also. Last stop for the day was the "Church in the Rock" which while worth seeing was not as exciting as the many others we have seen. There was an orchestra rehearsing for a show the following night so we sat and watched. To be honest the music was crap and no way up to the standard of what we listened to in Vienna. We were taken out for dinner on Monday night to taste "Rudolph" and not bad at all. Like kangaroo and emu when added to other ingredients everything tastes good. Will not be planning another reindeer tasting soon though however we will be heading back to markets for another salmon treat. Tuesday is the free day so we headed off to local public ferry to do an island hop. The cost, five euro, compared to taking a tour boat costing thirty nine euro. There are over 2000 islands of various sizes sprinkled. The main island of Suomenlinna proved to be a real hidden gem of Finland. A former prison camp, during the 1918 civil war, and at other times a fort. Walking around the island we were able to see a submarine along with numerous historical sites such as Kings Gate. When viewing the fortress walls themselves you can understand why the island was never invaded. The tunnel network was huge and from the fort they could target anyone or boat without ever giving the opponent a chance of effective return fire. We spent three hours here it was so good. One last church visit on the way home was the Russian Orthodox Church (Ustenski Cathedral) which sits high above the city. Hard walking up but once inside the pain of the climb disappeared. Back at our motel we are currently packing as tomorrow we are off to St. Petersburg by high speed train and looking forward to it very much. We are not sure whether we will have any internet access until the 10th September, however we promise to fill in gaps as soon as we get back on line.

Hello, Shadow Pond Family!
Greetings to @jadziana, @giosteele, @redlibrary, @borisofroyalpains, @championmuffin, @royal-pains-love-blog, @renuka13, @royalpainscentral, @maria-marz, @frostiron81, @nerdyzombiesonskates, @spoookyboo, and all others who enjoy Royal Pains and our favorite couple: Boris and Hank.
Thank you all, for your patience; I was away on travel visiting my Father and then became a wee bit too busy because of work/job.
I was also in a minor traffic accident - NO WORRIES - all is well, but do you recall how proud I am of my custom license plate?  Since I was rear-ended, my beautiful license plate:  SHADWPND  was munched along with the back end of my car.  Once my car is returned to me from the repair shop - possibly by weeks’ end, I will be able to order a new plate to replace the crunched up one.
I am with hope that this is some good news for you:  ‘Music in the Air’ on A03 has a new chapter!  Our continuing story of the soul-mate love/life of Horis; this new chapter is called “Romance”.  They have left St. Petersburg and stop in Paris on their way home to Shadow Pond.
Some highlights from this chapter:
---Boris commented that the ‘formal’ breakfast they were having was pleasantly unique and Hank suggested to Boris that he not get any big ideas for them to start wearing tuxes at home during breakfast.
---Boris lowered himself fully and firmly down onto Hank and nuzzled his neck with his hands in Hank’s hair, he asked Hank in a silky deep voice, “Coffee or me?  Choose wisely, Hank...remember what happened the last time you chose the sandwich.”
---“You’re the one who’s racking up all of the expensive doctor bills,” Hank stated, “We’re gonna have to sell off property to make ends meet, you know.“
---“Oh gees, do I have to tell you two to get a room again?  I’m sure you can find one in this big house!” Evan said with mock exasperation and then did a very poor imitation of Maurice Chevalier as he said, “Oh, oh, oh, mah broth-err, please pass me la bread, oh, oh, oh!”
---“Why is Boris…your…husband… being so nice to me?!” Evan repeated slowly but loudly.
I hope that you enjoy this chapter and this on-going story - I am thrilled beyond words to have this opportunity to create this version of the world of Horis; I greatly appreciate your time and Shadow Pond friendship.

Weekend Update
I went shopping, I went to a shopping center that had a bunch of European stores. It was pretty cool. They had this huge water fountain with lights and fun elevators. I bought a couple books, Terry Prachet’s first discworld novel and a collection of H.P. Lovecraft stories. I also bought a little backpack so I can carry my tablet and breakfast to the office more easily. I went to Russian Lush, because it’s so dry here I’m turning into a reptile, and also I wanted some fun jars of various creams with Cyrillic on them. I mostly did a lot of wandering about.
Then I did the thing that all introverts fear, I went to a bar alone. It was St. Patrick’s day, and there was an international event to celebrate at an expat bar. I went and talked to random people I had never met, it was a little intimidating but I walked in behind another girl who knew no one and we quickly found a couple people to talk to. They seemed like cool people and now we are fb friends. The girl is from St Petersburg and just moved to Moscow, she said she would like to go to galleries and such with someone. The other two were from Crimea and Italy respectively, they were already friends and have been in and out of Moscow for several years. They also had a lot of recommendations for things I should do while I’m here. - Then, at the stroke of midnight, I fled the party like Cinderella. Except, instead of my carriage turning into a pumpkin, I just wanted to take the metro home before it closed. The Russian girl came with me until our routes diverged.
On Sunday, I had a leisurely breakfast at the cafe/deli-without-sandwiches thing downstairs. The three guys behind the counter that I had not seen before got a kick out of the fact that I spoke English.
-on this topic, I think this happens to me so often because I look very russian. This weekend, I was told on three separate occasions that I look Russian. Even my smile is Russian apparently. I talked to one woman who was surprised to hear I was American, and she said that usually the Americans are very easy to spot - even on the street- and apparently I do not look like this.-
Then I filled out the Columbia housing application, which was kind of exciting. And then I watched tv and read for a little bit. Then I decided to go see a movie- I picked Mary and the Witches’ Flower, mostly because I thought the plot would not be dialogue dependent and it would be pretty to look at. Its a Ghibli adjacent film, which means it had the same animators as Spirited away, but wasn’t written my Miyazaki. It was pretty good, an enjoyable watch at least.
Then I went home. I am coming down with some kind of head cold :( At work today I am really starting to feel it. I will need to take some more vitamine c stuff tonight and probably cold medicine tomorrow.

Adventure #5: June 7, Tallinn, Estonia: Fortresses, cobbled streets, and herring???? June 8: Sea Day #3 June 9: Warnemunde, Germany: Sausages and Clocks
Tumblr media
This stop on the cruise was one of the shortest ones (we had to be back on the ship by 4 pm), so we woke up early to have breakfast so that we could be off the ship as soon as the gangway was open for disembarkment. After purchasing shuttle bus tickets into the city we headed out to see the fortress “Kiek en de Kӧk” that the city was best known for. We got a little turned around for a bit which my dad was upset about for a bit, but eventually, we were able to locate Old Town. It was amazing to see a medieval city so well preserved in the center of a modern city; it was like a small pocket of the past amidst the present. All of sudden the streets were cobblestone instead of cement and we were surrounded by towering walls with watchtowers and old stone buildings.
Tallinn, a trading city on the Baltic Sea dates back to the 13th century and is a registered UNESCO World Heritage site. While Old Town is a historic landmark and a popular place for tourists to visit, it still functions much as it did back in the day with people living and working there as well as having commercial and religious functions.
As we wandered around Lower Old Town, we stumbled upon the entrance to the famed Town Wall. My parents didn’t want to join my sister and I, so we climbed to the top of the wall while they watched for us from down below. The steps were really steep and slightly slippery from years of being worn down by constant foot traffic. While we were up there, we were able to see this gorgeous view overlooking Old Town. We visited the Stout Margaret Tower (Paks Margareeta), a cannon tower that is best known as “Fat Margaret”. They say that the tower got its name from a large cannon that it housed or from a cook named Margaret who used to work there. It was funny going up there with my sister because she is deathly afraid of height. Every time that she thought I got too close to the railing or leaned over too much, she would start freaking out. I definitely got some butterflies in my stomach from how high up we were, but being the younger sister, of course, I had to mess with her a little bit. It’s safe to say that by the time we climbed down, she was stressed and sweaty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After spending some time on the wall, we walked around for a bit longer, looking at the various highlights on the map before grabbing lunch at this pub. There were so many drinks that we wanted to, and since we were only going to be there for the afternoon, of course, we ordered everything we wanted: juniper beer, a le coq beer, a local pale ale, passion fruit cider, and rhubarb lemonade. We also ordered some herring, something that my dad and I had been wanting to try for a while after seeing it on various travel shows. Herring is a popular dish in Scandanavia and is served many ways, and the one that we wanted to try was raw cured herring. I was not a fan. It was served with fried potato balls and a garlic cream sauce. The flavor was salty and very fishy and a little bit slimy. The funniest bit was watching my sister try it, who is not a fan of fish to begin with. She dunked the smallest piece of fish in the sauce and was writhing as she put it in her mouth; she refused to chew it and then swallowed it whole. In comparison, the savory chicken mushroom cheese pancakes that we ordered were very yummy. They were more like crepes rather than American style pancakes.

After lunch, we walked around some more, without anything particular in mind. Most of the buildings or landmarks worthy of note were on Toompea Hill, which was actually a bit of a steep walk. In Palace Square, there was Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, a Russian Orthodox church built in 1900. It looked so much like the churches that we saw in St. Petersburg.
Tumblr media
The highlight of my day was really freaking my sister out while looking out over one of the oldest medieval towns. Next to one of the lower parts of the fortress, my family and I were looking at the Toompea Park down below and I asked my mom to take a picture of me laying on the wall, but my sister got scared and tried to pull me down. My mom got the picture mid-pull. I couldn’t breathe from laughing so hard.
Tumblr media
After walking around a hilly, cobbled city, we were pretty tired so we headed to the shuttle so we could go back to the ship. Because we went back to the ship early, we were back in time to make it to tea-time. Princess Cruises has tea time from 3 pm to 4 pm every day. They serve finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, small pastries, and English tea with sugar and cream. On previous cruises, we always looked forward to going to tea time for the scones with clotted cream and jam. After tea time with my parents, I headed up to the pool deck to read outside, then later moved to the piazza in the center of the ship to listen to the string quartet perform.
Tumblr media
Our night ended much like it did the other nights. At dinner, we ordered everything new (of course) and then listened to the performers in the piazza before heading to the karaoke lounge.

June 8 - Sea Day #3
Having a sea day after 3 days of non-stop touring, it was nice to be able to sleep in and get some rest. I slept into the afternoon and then grabbed some lunch with my parents. On sea days, there is usually a lot of activities to do on board but I usually like to spend my time reading or watching whatever is on the jumbotron on the pool deck. That evening, they would be hosting the formal night and everyone would dress up in tuxedos and evening gowns. Because we were grabbing dinner with the Flores’, we got ready earlier so we had enough time to take pictures before dinner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dinner with them was a riot and we were stuffed full of escargot and lobster. After our usual time at the karaoke lounge, we joined the dance party in the piazza and stayed there until we all headed to bed.
June 9: Warnemunde and Rostock, Germany
Tumblr media
Our 9th day on the cruise, we docked in Warnemunde, Germany. Because the ship would be docked until 9 pm that night, we weren’t too fussed about waking up early to head into town. This port was where cruises docked so that passengers could take a bus to Berlin about 2-3 hours away. We already planned on going to Berlin after the cruise so we instead spent our time going around Warnemunde and Rostock, a 15-minute train ride from the port city.
We started our day off going to Rostock. Rostock is a Hanseatic City that is considered often referred to as the “Gateway to the North”. True to its description of being a quaint town, many of the buildings were in an older style and just overall, very European-looking. We didn’t really know too much about the city before coming here, so we spent most of our time wandering around. There were a bunch of clothing and shoe stores lined along the way, however, because it was Sunday, almost everything was closed and the city seemed a little deserted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we walked around, we spotted a food stand selling sausages and currywurst, both of which I am a big fan of. My aunt married a German, so growing up, I ate a lot of German food because I was always spending time with my cousins, so of course, when I saw the sign of currywurst I had to get some. Currywurst is basically sliced sausage topped with curry powder that you dip in curry ketchup; we also ordered a Rostocker, the local sausage. We were shocked when the man handed us the Rostocker because the sausage was ginormous but the bread it was served in was the size of a dinner roll. I didn’t end up liking the Rostocker because it was so porky, but the currywurst was quite tasty.
Tumblr media
We wandered into one of the older, larger churches, Saint Marien-Kirche, where we stumbled upon my favorite thing that day: The Astronomic Clock of 1472. The clock was built by Hans Düringer, a master clocksmith from Nuremberg. The clock shows, hours, days, months, years, phases of the sun and moon, and the Zodiac. The clock had computation of the dates of Easter up until 2017 but was updated in 2018 to add on more years. This is the oldest and last working astronomical clock from the Middle Ages that still tell the time, date, and more. The highlight of the clock is at noon when there is a procession by the Apostles. The Apostles circle Christ, then file through a door that is supposed to represent heaven, and just before Judas enters, the doors close and he is left outside. It was so cool that we were actually there at noon when the procession occurred.
Tumblr media
After our time at the church, we headed back to Warnemunde to wander around there as well. It was a cute coastal town with restaurants and cafes up and down the marina. We wandered in and out of some of the shops that were open and tried fried fish sandwiches at one of the boats docked there.
Tumblr media
By 4 pm we were done walking around and headed back to the ship to get a little bit of rest before dinner, which was, as usual, very filling and entertaining.

Where to Rent Baby Gear – Pack Less Play More - Gulfport, Treasure Island & St Petersburg
When Freshness Really Counts
As any chef or good cook will tell you, one of the keys to cooking success is to start with the freshest ingredients.
And I think there's nowhere where that's more important than fresh seafood..
We've all taken that stroll through a supermarket reeking of questionable seafood products and bleach, only to find our appetite and enthusiasm taking a dip. Or nosedive.  No pun intended.
Well worry not, we've got you covered! Read on for how to buy fresh fish and where to buy it in the Gulfport, Treasure Island, St Pete Beach and St Petersburg area.
Mary Oliver
" Listen, are you breathing just a little, and calling it a life?"
How to Buy Fresh Fish
Step 1: Go to a local and reputable seafood shop.  See the next section "Where to Buy" below.
Step 2: Ask what the freshest fish is or what the catch of the day is.
Step 3: If you decided to buy anything other than what they tell you is freshest or the catch of the day, make sure what you're buying isn't "previously frozen".
Step 4: Make sure the flesh is firm and shiny.  It should provide resistance when touched. Don't go poking it with your uncovered finger, however. I saw one source that said the fish should look as if it might jump up and swim away. If only, the fish is thinking. If only...
Step 5: Sniff it. Yes it's ok.  Fish isn't supposed to smell fishy. It should smell fresh.
Step 6: If the poor creature still has its head intact, check the eyes.  They should be clear, not cloudy.  (You know, so he can see better...)
Step 7: Gills if present should be bright pink and wet. No slimeyness.  Ever.
Step 8: For fillets or steaks, make sure the meat doesn't separate from itself.  If it does it isn't fresh.
Step 9: If the fish still has its skin, make sure the skin is not discolored.  No brown or yellow edges. Mostly this means even, consistent coloring.
Riding on the road is not necessary - we have safe trails and pathways!
Where to Buy #1 - Key West Shrimp Company
We get it.  You're not in Key West.  And no, I don't know why. But I do know that the entire business is a family affair, with their own boats and own stores.  One shop is located in St Pete Beach and the other in Madeira Beach.
"Most of our fish was swimming less than 24 hours ago." Says it right on the website. You'd have to fish for it yourself to get it any fresher.  Like them on Facebook to find out what their specials and fresh catches are.
Read about their dedication to sustainability here.  And check out products available in their online store here.  (Fish Spread fans will find some things to love here!)  You can even ship some home if you'd like.
10 am to 6 pm every day.  St Pete Beach location is 7217 Gulf Blvd Ste 13 (727) 873-3913.  Madeira Beach location is 215 150th Ave. (727) 592-1885

Both a restaurant and a full-service fish market.   Looking for something special? Call them! They just may be able to deliver.
Not sure which fish to buy? Visit their Fish School for tips on cooking and information on origin.
Mid Peninsula Seafood's restaurant is one of my faves. Soups, sandwiches, dinners and big orders to feed a gang.  Fish Spread is available and something you don't see just anywhere - hushpuppies! They call them Cornpuppies!
Find the full menu of prepared foods here.

Where to Buy #4 - Don's Dock & Wild Seafood Market
Don's Dock has a wonderful fish market in addition to provide bait, ice and other gear you need to go fishing.
You can call 727-391-3223 for the Catch of the Day, see where your sustainably-caught seafood is coming from "Track Your Fish" and more.
Sauce and seasonings available too.  Online seafood market coming soon.
Check out the photo gallery for sample wares.  Those babies look ready to go home with you.
Don's Dock Wild Seafood Market is located at 215 Boardwalk Place E, Madeira Beach, Fl. (727) 391-3223
insider tip: sustainable seafood?
View the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch Consumer Guide here.
Recipe Suggestion: Perfect Salmon
Note: This cooking technique can be used on other varieties of fish too.  Just use your seasoning of choice!
Ingredients
Salmon filets, not steaks
Olive Oil
Soy Sauce
Maple Syrup
Spray or rub a small amount of olive oil on the bottom or skin-side of the fish.  Massage soy sauce into the top of the fish.  Place the fish skin side down on a small metal tray.  (Sizzle platters are perfect for this.) Pour a modest amount (approximately 1 T) of maple syrup over the top of the fish and spread it around.
Place the salmon in a COLD oven.   Now turn the oven on to 400 degrees and set a timer for 25 minutes. Your fish will be moist and flaky and the soy sauce maple syrup on top provides a slight crunch.
Enjoy!

Disposing of Fish Parts - How to be a Good Neighbor!
No matter how fresh that fish is when you get it, eventually it won't be.  If you have leftovers (or leftover "parts"), please don't just toss them (bagged or not) in the trash can and let them marinate until trash day. Please help keep the trash cans clean and smelling the best they can by refrigerating your excess in a plastic bag and tossing out the morning of trash pickup.

Deep Within My Bones Ch 11- Answer
AU. Viktor wins another gold at the Olympics, and attends the Paralympics as another duty as the King of Ice Skating. Having lost his inspiration and heart, Viktor did not expect to find love in what he sees as the perfect man. Yuuri, after losing his legs, lost his chance to compete on the same ice as his idol. When the world seems to fall into place, what else can be taken away from them? Ch 1-6 is Setup, start at Ch. 6 for the cute romance-y and drama
FYI- Canonically, Yuuri is blood type A. Apparently, Viktor's blood type is a mystery. Any profile has had his blood type as a ? This is interesting because Japan has a sort of astrology based around blood type. It is used for personality types, and compatibility with other people. from issendai.com: People with blood type A have a deep-rooted strength that helps them stay calm in a crisis when everyone else is panicking. However, they tend to avoid confrontation, and feel very uncomfortable around people. A types are shy and sometimes withdrawn. They seek harmony and are very polite, but all the same feel that they never really fit in with others. A types are very responsible. If there is a job to be done, they prefer to take care of it themselves. These people crave success and are perfectionists. They are also very creative, and the most artistic of all the blood types, most likely because of their sensitivity.
Shokupan is the most common type of Japanese bread, next to baguettes and all the buns and pastry kinds. It is a very sweet white bread that comes very square and thick-cut. It kind of sucks for savory sandwiches, but makes amazing breakfast toast http://www.dreamsofdashi.com/shokupan/
Viktor nearly jumped out of his skin the next morning. He had woken up in Yuuri’s bed, the stress and dread settling in as he woke up and remembered what had happened the night before. He went straight downstairs, Makkachin following him, her wet nose bumping the back of his legs as he walked. Yuri was downstairs, in Yuuri’s usual spot. Viktor’s stomach lurched—he had forgotten the surprise guest, and he had refused to stay back at Yuutopia when they had stopped by before the trip to Fukuoka. Any damage from before was probably worse, by now. Thank God for Mariko--- she sat across from Yurio, her place empty but for a cup of coffee. There was a stack of uno cards and the TV remote—they hadn’t been back for dinner at all last night, after all. “Good morning.” Mariko said idly as she flipped through an old looking magazine, before sliding it over to the blonde boy. “Here.” “You speak English?” Viktor sputtered. “A little,” Mari held up her fingers in a small pinch. “No… rosshia.” Yuri snickered. No wonder the magazine looked a little worn for the wear… Viktor was in it, with his long silver locks and a foot less of height. “Did you really bring magazines all this way?” Viktor peered over, before taking his place next to Yuri. “As if. These are your boyfriend’s. He needs a new name. I was here first.” “Technically, he was. He’s six years older than you.” Viktor almost felt like smiling again, even as Yuri rolled his eyes at him. Mari has escaped the conversation, coming back and handing him a mug of coffee. “Yurio ate breakfast. We… go to Fukuoka… ten o clock?” Mariko wiggled her hand side to side, unsure. Viktor grinned. This made things a lot easier—the gift of a nickname, just like he had becoming Vicchan and Makkachin turned into Makka-chan those months before. “Yurio will be easier than Yuratchka for them.” Viktor mused, staring at the old article from his junior years “Don’t worry. I won’t be in your way much longer.” Yuri said with a sour taste in his mouth. He almost took a little pleasure in the smile disappearing from Viktor lips. “You just got here. And I haven’t seen you in months.” “Whose fault is that?” Yuri instantly felt a little twinge of regret at the guilt that clouded over Viktor’s face. “Mine. But sometimes people make hard decisions. And I am happy with my decision.” “Yakov didn’t think you’d be taking this long.” “I honestly didn’t think I would either. My plans changed.” “You had a plan?” Yuri scoffed at him again, “You ran off to Japan to a guy you barely knew and you had a plan?” “I was going to ask him to come back to St. Petersburg” Viktor sighed “And?” “His family. I couldn’t do that. And they became my family too.” Yuri worried his bottom lip, staring down at the table. Silence stretched between them. “And… I’m sorry for leaving my skating family behind.” Viktor breathed out, closing his eyes. “Will you ever come back?” Viktor opened his eyes. “Of course—“ “Don’t lie.” “I…don’t know. I love Yuuri. If he has cancer… I can’t take him away from his family. Or leave him. I’m old enough to retire anyway.” The table shook and rattled with the force of Yuri’s punch. “Don’t you dare! I didn’t work this hard for all these years for you to give up before I get to skate against you!” Viktor couldn’t help but smile. Even with the constant anger and power from the little punk… it was nice to know that he was still considered a rival. Or someone to look up to at least. “I’ve missed you, my little Yuratchka..” -- Viktor knew Yuri had had enough of hospitals in his life already. Which was why, instead of joining them in the van for the drive to Fukuoka, Viktor stayed behind. He knew the way to Ice Castle by heart, and from there he could extrapolate to the main shopping street. He could entertain Yuri with the discount clothing store full of tacky prints, and there was always something new at the 100 yen store. Barring that, he could drag Yuri to the gaming center that had a fairy floss machine next to all the photo booths. Maybe it would keep him distracted too. The two Russians stood on the driveway after seeing the Katsuki’s off, the onsen closed for the day. Which wasn’t reassuring in the slightest. But he knew Yuuri would tell him. And Yuuri was coming home. If there was one good thing Viktor was good at, it was hiding from pain. “So, Yurio—what would you like to do first? We can—“ “I want to skate.” “Seriously? You’re skipping school and coming to Japan to skate?” Viktor laughed, but it died in his throat at the look Yuri gave him. “Okay. That wasn’t fair. We’ll skate, only for a few hours. Tell me before you get tired.” Viktor continued, heading back inside to get his bag. -- Although he was sure there was something in the fridge, it still felt wrong to go through someone else’s fridge while they weren’t home. Which is why Viktor stopped at a 7-11 conbini on the way home from Ice castle. He had forgotten that this was an experience of its own, and let Yuri explore the store on his own while he stared at the dessert case. He picked up the exact kind of pudding Yuuri had barely been able to stomach the night before, turning it over in his hands. He stared at the flower shaped bottom of the container, the caramel syrup settling to the side of the container. He added two more containers, one for each Yuri, before looking for something a little more substantial. “Yuri! Over here!” Viktor called, hoping Yuri would listen before he noticed the magazine corner was mainly meant for adults and definitely not for a pubescent foreigner. Yuri came over with a basket of his own, looking starry-eyed. “Viktor, they have soft serve in a freezer.” He held up a perfectly shaped ice cream cone that looked like it had just been pulled out of a machine. Viktor shuffled through Yuri’s basket, through the Pop Star potato chips, grimacing as he came across the ‘Coque d’Asse’ cookies and Yuri’s wheezy laughter at it. “At least get a sandwich.” Viktor was about to scold himself for sounding too much like a parent, before a rush of déjà vu washed over him. He had done this before, but Yuuri had been there. He had gone through all of the funny snacks, adding a few things with a little more protein and power to get them through training. And of course, Yuuri had been Yuuri. He hadn’t rolled his eyes or scolded Viktor. He brought him over to the cold case, past the packaged salads, to the row of beautifully- cut sandwiches wrapped in plastic wizardry. Each one was cut in a triangle, set side by side, and wrapped in such a way that pulling one tab would divide the package into two neat halves. Yuuri had shared his favorite, the fruit sandwich, layers of seasonal fruit and whipped cream, the soft and slightly sweet shokupan spread with condensed milk. Viktor had grown up never considering sandwich to be a sweet thing, but Yuuri had converted him. Viktor paid for all of it, even though Yuri was a reasonably well-traveler. It felt like passing the favor on, and he had a lot to make up to Yuratchka. Viktor’s stomach sank as the walked up the driveway of Yuutopia only to see the van back. He moved to check his phone, before the passenger door opened, and Hiroko jumped out, opening the back door. Mari slid out, meeting eyes with Viktor, before she took several steps back, her mother moving forward. Viktor first saw his hand, Yuuri letting his mother help him out of the car, although he had been capable of it for months before. He looked unsteady on his feet.. or was Viktor just over analyzing it? “Viktor?” He called out, and Viktor’s stomach plummeted. “Yuuri!” He dropped the bag he had from the konbini, running forward, to Yuuri. He thanked every god and God and goddess in the world, because Yuuri immediately melted into his free arms. “I’m sorry.” Viktor could feel Yuuri’s voice vibrate against his chest, but the words didn’t make any sense. What was there to be sorry for? Yuuri’s shoulders jerked, and Viktor’s shirt tightened as Yuuri’s fingers twisted the fabric and tightened into fist. Viktor’s stomach felt as if it filled with ice water. “What’s wrong, Yuuri?” Viktor breathed, barely able to force his lips into the words. He focused on holding Yuuri up, gently caressing the side of Yuuri’s face that wasn’t buried in his shirt.
“It’s cancer.” Yuuri looked up, his eyes full and spilling over with heavy tears.
