A Love to Kill (2005) - I own Japanese DVDs of this, I was so obsessed. A dark, intense melo in which Rain gets a job as a bodyguard to a rising young star played by Shin Minah. His plan is to seduce and wreck her to avenge his dead brother (who he believes killed himself after she heartlessly left him for fame), but he recons without his own impossible feelings for her or the extent of SMA’s internal damage. They remain one of the most impossible, messed-up, intense, doomed OTPs I’ve ever shipped. Stock tissues.

Beautiful Days (2001-2002) - a super classic, grown up melo about a plucky poor girl and a tortured workaholic and Choi Ji Woo and Lee Byung Hun set the screen on fire.

Capital Scandal (2007) - somehow both frothy and deeply emotional, this centers on freedom fighters and playboys and spies in 1930s Seoul. If you don’t love it, you have no heart.

Chuno/Slave Hunters (2009) - possibly my favorite sageuk (it’s a threeway tie atm), this story about an aristocrat turned slave hunter, a general turned slave, and a slave woman turned an aristocrat, all involved with rebellion, court secrets and sheer desperation of their lives is amazing. Beyond amazing. Jang Hyuk, Oh Ji Ho and Lee Da Hae are all on fire and if you ever watch only one sageuk, make it this one.

City Hall (2009) - Kim Sun Ah as a small town civil servant and Cha Seung Won as an amoral fixer for a powerful politician sparkle beyond words in the most grown up, smart kdrama romcom I have ever seen.

Damo (2003) - my first sageuk, this is as good as ever. Ha Ji Won is a police tea servant, a noble lady whose family was executed and she came down in the world; Lee Seo Jin as her noble superior who loves her silently. She infiltrates a conspiracy led by the charismatic, tortured Kim Mim Joon, and epic tragedy follows.

Delightful Girl Chunhyang (2005) - back when Hong Sisters were consistently good, this is a modern take on the famous folk tale. Our heroine is a studious poor girl and our hero a ne’er-do-well son of a local prosecutor. There is arranged marriage, true love surviving some insane sacrifice, one of my all time favorite OTPs, and a heroine and hero that grow into people I was obsessed with. Confession time - I wrote fanfic for this drama!

Sang Do, Let’s Go to School - Gong Hyo Jin is a teacher, Rain is a gigolo taking gigs to support his son; they used to be each other’s first loves. It’s wistful and slice of life and utterly tragic. Written by Lee Kyung Hee of the A Love to Kill and Thank You fame.

Save the Last Dance for Me (2004-2005) - I binged 17 episodes of this baby at a go, a record that has not yet been surpassed. Ji Sung is a rich man who is in an accident and gets amnesia, being cared for and falling for Eugene. However when he recovers his memory and forgets his amnesia time - he will end up meeting her again and falling for her all over again (hilariously, his RL wife Lee Bo Young plays the psycho secondary girl in this.)

Say You Love Me (2004) - a much better attempt at Dangerous Liasons than the wretched Tempted. Kim Rae Won and Yoon So Yi, naive and tragic young lovers, come across a pair of jaded sophisticates; the female half of whom is intrigued by the fresh faced KRW and envious of uncomplicated young love and asks her partner to take YSI away from KRW for kicks.

What Happened in Bali (2005) - Ha Ji Won, Jo In Sung and So Ji Sub are a trio of desperately damaged people entangled with each other in what is probably still the darkest melo I have seen out of Korea. Money grubbing poor woman played by HJW, high-strung, abused rich son played by JIS, or a cold, ambitious man on the rise SJS - pick any of them, there is enough damage to level a city.

Worlds Within/The World That They Live In (2008) - the last candidate for my n1 kdrama of all time. By Noh Hee Kyung, with seemingly mundane lives of TV station personnel. But every character is someone you feel you know and Hyun Bin and Song Hye Kyo are both real and unreal as the OTP.

5. Class of Lies (2019)

Ki Moo-Hyeok (Yoon Kyun Sang) is a lawyer with a high winning rate. He only cares about money. Due to a murder case at a high school which he deals with, his reputation as a lawyer hits rock bottom. In order to regain his good name as a lawyer, he sneaks into the high school and begins to work as a temporary teacher. He tries to reveal a secret which the students have. In so doing, Ki Moo-Hyeok gets involved with Teacher Ha So-Hyun (Keum Sae Rok). She is P.E. teacher who loves her students. Ki Moo-Hyeok and Ha So-Hyun then face the students' secret.

Thoughts/Conclusion:

As I am writing this, this is the latest kdrama I have watched. This was recommended by my friend and I remembered myself including this in my list of kdramas ‘to watch’ way before, but hasn’t been able to, yet. Hahaha!

In all of the dramas I’ve watched (with the same plot as this one), this one stands out the most because of its ending ㅡ open-ended. Yes, there were still some unanswered questions, but that is what made this drama intriguing. I love how realistic the approach of the drama is in interpreting the story. That not everything gets resolved, and in this drama too, the ending with Yu Beom Jin left us with many unanswered questions.

4. D-Day (2015)

Genre: Medical Drama, Disaster, Romance

Plot (by Wikipedia):

Lee Hae-sung is a surgeon who is transferred from one of the best hospitals in Seoul to a rundown hospital with no ER. After disobeying his previous hospital director, Park Geon, he then meets Jung Ddol-mi, an orthopedic resident from Busan who came to Seoul to transfer a patient. Ddol-mi tries to meet professor Han Woo-jin, a cold robotics surgeon who works in Hae-sung's old hospital who saved her life when she was younger before going back to Busan. However, she is stuck in Seoul after trying to save a patient. Meanwhile, a sinkhole appears in Seoul followed by a big earthquake that blocks all access to the city, causing phones, electricity, and water to not function. Hae-sung teams up with Ddol-mi to treat people, but soon medicine starts to run out.

Thoughts/Conclusion:

If I will recall, I think this is the first medical kdrama I have watched? I watched this because of Lee Sungyeol of INFINITE is casted in this drama and also because of the plot. But as I go on, I found myself so absorbed in the series.

What I liked about this series aside from the plot are the actors and actresses. They all did well in portraying each character, but I have to say, Kim Young Kwang really stands out for me. He has put a lot of effort in expressing his emotions into his character and it felt so real.

3. Tunnel (2017)

Genre: Police Procedural, Crime, Thriller

In 1986, Detective Park Gwang-Ho (Choi Jin Hyuk) desperately tries to catch a serial killer. He chases after the serial killer and goes through a tunnel. On the other side of the tunnel, Detective Park Gwang-Ho finds himself in the year 2017. The serial killer has resumed the killings that began 30 years ago. Detective Park Gwang-Ho works with Detective Kim Sun-Jae (Yoon Hyun Min) and Professor of Criminal Psychology Shin Jae-Yi (Lee Yoo Young) to catch the killer.

Thoughts/Conclusion:

I was actually torn between Tunnel and Signal, but I decided to include Tunnel in my Top 5 kdrama recommendations because it tackles criminal psychology as well as criminal profiling and I have been very interested in those things lately. What makes this series intriguing is that, it shows how psychopaths and sociopaths are developing in the society.

Seo Jin-woo has a special condition called hyperthymesia which allows him to remember almost every day in perfect detail. While his father, Seo Jae-hyuk on the other hand, developed an Alzheimer's disease, making him lose his memories. When Seo Jae-hyuk was wrongfully convicted of murder, Jin-woo vows to prove innocence of his father. Four years later, Jin-woo becomes a lawyer to put the real criminal behind bars but bribery, corruption, and betrayals would not give him an easy road to justice.

Thoughts/Conclusion:

This series has been my top 1 kdrama ever since I have watched it, but Chicago Typewriter happened (well, I’ll be talking about this later). I came across a clip from the first episode of the series in Facebook. It was the scene on Jinwoo and Inha on the bus while identifying the culprit who stole something from Inha. I was intrigued about it and how Jinwoo has sharp memory and remembers everything.

What I love about this drama is the refreshing new plot and the characters, oh, let’s not forget how good Nam Goong Min portrayed his character as Nam Gyu Man. He really showed excellent acting skills to the point that even the viewers will hate him SO MUCH. Hahaha.

1. Chicago Typewriter (2017)

The series depicts three resistance fighters who lived during the 1930s Japanese occupation of Korea, and are reincarnated into the present as a best-selling writer in a slump, a fan, and a ghostwriter.

It is an epic story of comradeship, friendship, love and betrayal that lasts 80 years. As the trio of writer, ghostwriter and fan race against time to find the truth of the past that haunts them, will their discovery affect their present?

Thoughts/Conclusion:

This is actually one of the recent kdramas I’ve watched during this enhanced community quarantine and I just have to say that this is actually one of my regrets in life (ok this is exaggerated lol but anyways). I regret not being able to watch this during the release which was last 2017. But it was actually on my ‘to watch’ list at that time. I’ve seen the plot and it made me curious, so I waited for it to finish before actually starting it, but I wasn’t really able to watch it because I got busy with school.

THIS. IS. SO. SO. SO. SO. GOOD.

As I’ve said above, Remember: War of the Son used to be my top 1 kdrama of all time, but after watching Chicago Typewriter, I changed my mind. Okay hear me out, I’ve seen A LOT of kdramas with new and interesting plot, but they haven’t topped Remember yet, but Chicago Typewriter just did, and I really mean it.

For the story, there were times where I felt that the story-line was moving slow. I mean, I wasn’t expecting it to be fast-paced but there were really scenes that I think have been dragged too long and not that important. But aside that, everything was SO GOOD. YES. IT WAS SO GOOD.

I love how series unfold the genuine friendship between the three main characters during the 1930s Japanese occupation of Korea – Seo Hwiyoung, Ryu Soohyun and Shin Yul. The storytelling throughout the drama is also good, even though they were constantly shifting timelines between 1930s and the present.  

The OSTs in the series were also GOOD. I tried listening to it after I watched the drama and I swear, listening to Satellite by SALTNPAPER and Writing Our Stories by SG Wannabe brings back all those emotions you’ve felt while watching it.

CHIEF KIM/GOOD MANAGER

Office dramas almost always follow a similar plot: there’s romance, juniors being bullied by superiors, and of course the power plays which has a touch of embezzlement in the mix. Chief Kim on the other hand, provides all of this, and so much more, take it from me, you’ll enjoy every bit of this drama from start to finish. 

One of the many things I admire about Chief Kim, is that the plot did not immediately dive into the office drama at the beginning. Before we get to the scenes where all the important stuff goes down, we’re introduced to one of the lead characters of this drama. 

Kim Sung Ryong, before being appointed Chief of Business Operations at TQ Group, used to be an accountant for gangsters in his hometown. This character’s main objective is to save enough money so he can move to Denmark, and the only way to obtain such wealth, is to steal it. 

Due to the familiar power plays which goes on behind the scenes, Kim Sung Ryong is able to attain a position at TQ Group, and not only is he a chief, he also became the popular Mr Righteous. Such a title contradicts the chief’s personality, and so you’ll find yourself laughing at the few scenes where he begins to contemplate following a new path. 

Aside from the comedic scenes involving Chief Kim, the plot steers in a different direction, by showcasing one of the powerful, yet evil directors of TQ Group. Director Seo Yool is brought into TQ Group as a fixer, and we’ll see the reason behind his appointment, as this director gets things done.

However, Director Seo Yool won’t be your favourite person, as the way in which he goes about solving the company’s problems, is a bit too unscrupulous. Each time this character is on-screen, you’ll realize just how devious he can be. 

As corruption within the company increases, Chief Kim along with the members of Business Operations, all join hands to fight against the monsters of irrationality. I admired how the plot allowed the underdog to thrive, as Chief Kim used his brains and wit, to outsmart his opponents. 

Yes there are moments in the plot where things might not go their way, however Chief Kim emphasizes the importance of teamwork, and the fact that one player cannot save an entire team. The storyline continues with one issue after the next, and as a viewer you’ll begin to wonder just how far the corruption goes. 

Romance is indeed an important factor to most plots, but Chief Kim shows us that a healthy bromance trumps just about anything. Chief Kim and Director Yool’s relationship started off as both parties being rivals, and whenever they’re together on-screen, the lively banter will have you giggling away. 

However, another thing I admired about Chief Kim, is that the majority of its characters go through some sort of personality development. The same applies to both Chief Kim and Director Yool, as not only do they change their ways, but they also join hands in the fight against corruption. 

The chemistry between all the characters in Chief Kim, is indeed overflowing, and so we get to see well-carried out interactions between each character. The members of Business Operations, are such a close knit group, and this familiarity results in this department being able to withstand anything which the company throws at them.

Nam Goong Min plays the character of Kim Sung Ryong/Chief Kim/TQ’s Psycho, a talented accountant who later becomes the icon for righteousness. Nam Goong Min has many projects under his belt, and there’s no doubting his skills. You can find him in Falsify, and keep an eye out for his upcoming drama Handsome Guy and Jung Eum. 

Lee Jun Ho, more popularly known as Junho of the boyband 2PM, plays the character of Director Seo Yool/Gluttonous Sociopath. Not only is Lee Jun Ho a talented singer and dancer, but he also a talented actor, with a variety of skills. You can find Lee Jun Ho in Just Between Lovers, and keep an eye out for his upcoming drama Wok of Love. 

Nam Sang Mi plays the character of Yoon Ha Kyung, an assistant manager in the Business Operations Department. Not only that, she is also Chief Kim’s partner-in-crime, and the person who Director Yool seems to have a crush on. Nam Sang Mi has been active for many years, and so you can find her in Goddess of Marriage, and Gunman in Joseon.

Chief Kim was directed by Lee Jae Hoon and Choi Yoon Suk. Lee Jae Hoon is known for working on Page Turner and Jeong DoJeon. Choi Yoon Suk is also known for working on Assembly and Queen of Mystery 2. 

This drama was written by Park Jae Bum, who also wrote the script for Good Doctor, and Blood.

The korean dramas I’m watching. Plus the World Cup issue.

I think I had the same problem last year around this time. There’s just too many entertaining dramas and I’m having a really hard time keeping up. I’ve started watching ten of the dramas currently airing. They’re too many for sure (I usually only watch three or four). I know that and of course I don’t have enough time to watch all of them  plus even if I could manage and even if I’m really obsessed with dramas that’s not all I do with my time so I’ve definitely left a few on hold to watch as a marathon on weekends.

In past posts I shared my thoughts on Rich Man, Suits and Wok of love. On top of that I’ve started watching The Undatables, Sketch, What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, About time, Investigation Couple, Miss Hammurabi  and Lawless Lawyers. To be perfectly honest none of the dramas I’m watching are particularly good but they’re all really fun to watch. Since I already talked about the first three I’m only gonna talk about the rest.

What’s wrong with secretary Kim is a rom-com based on a webtoon that makes me remember the 2002 movie Two weeks notice. Similarly to the movie, this drama starts when Park Seo Joon’s character is notified by his secretary (Park Min Young) that she will be leaving the company. He decides that is unacceptable and he will do what ever it takes to stop it from happening. Honestly this is just my kind of drama. Yes it is clichéd but it’s witty and well done. Even if it’s only on it’s first week it is already my favorite drama right now.

About time. This drama is another rom-com with a sci-fi spin to it. I had high hopes for this in the first week but somehow the course that they’re taking is not what I was hoping for. Having said that it’s funny and sometimes heartwarming. Loving Lee Sang Yoon and Lee Sung Kyung together. The story is about a girl that sees the time people have left to live including her own. Problem is she only has a few months to live but when she finds a guy that happens to stop her clock she decides she needs to get close to him so she can stay alive a bit longer.

Lawless lawyers. I’m a huge Jun Ki fan so I was gonna watch this drama for sure but it turned out to be a pretty interesting one. It’s a legal thriller drama with a splash of romance. A boy watches her mother’s muder and when he grows up he comes back to his home town to make sure the people responsable end up in jail.

Miss Hammurabi. The last time I watched Go Ara and Infinite’s L I kind of hated their dramas so I really wanted to love this drama and I do...at times. First of all I love Myungsoo’s (L) character. I think he’s sweet but Go Ara’s character just makes me think she has been doing the same character for her last two dramas. It’s another drama about judges and even though it touches interesting subjects and tries to portray different views I still think it ends up more often than not being cheesy. I actually get upset in almost every episode but at the same time I’m really looking forward to watch the rest of it.

Sketch. It’s another sci-fi action drama about a girl that dreams about murders and tries to prevent them from happening. This JTBC drama marks the comeback of Rain to dramaland. I’ve only watched 3 episodes of this one but so far it’s interesting although sometimes the decision making of the character drives me mad.

The undateables. Nam Goong Min and Hwang Jung Eum star this rom-com about a former athlethe turned match maker and a museum director that put their brains together to make sure a list of undateables end up with a partner. In the process they’ll get to know each other and most probably end up falling for each other. Choi Tae Joon also appears on this one. If I had never watched She was pretty and Lucky Romance, I would’ve been raving about how funny this drama is but because I have seen those I can’t help thinking how Hwang Jung Eum is playing the same kind of character again and even when the character is different it ends up feeling like you’ve already watch something like this before.

Investigation couple. This legal foresic drama reminds me of several american tv series about the relationship between prosecutors and the forensic unit with a korean spin of course. A new eager prosecutor with good intentions has to handle an excentric but genius forensic doctor.

The World Cup issue.

So unless you are living under a rock you probably know the football (soccer) world cup starts next week. That’s a great thing for football fans around the globe but it’s totally making me panic. On one hand since I’m watching so many dramas I’m really gonna hate it if the broadcasting stations stops airing dramas because there’s a game or a football related program. For example last week It’s dangerous beyond the covers (the variety show) announced it would come back in a month. If they do that with a drama I’m gonna lose it.

On the other hand I really don’t know how I’m going to manage to watch this many dramas and watch the world cup. I really don’t want to give up either. Four years ago I was only watching a few dramas a year so it was no big deal but now that I’m so into them it’s different. I think this month will be full of making tough choices.

"Doctor John" dựa trên tiểu thuyết Nhật Bản "On hand of god" của Yo Kusakabe. "Doctor John" là bộ phim về đề tài y khoa xoay quanh câu chuyện tình yêu giàu nghị lực của bác sĩ gây mê Cha Yo Han (Ji Sung) cùng cô nàng bác sĩ nội trú năm hai Kang Si Young (Lee Se-Young).

Cuộc đời của Yo Han vốn rất cô độc và trắc trở khi anh trải qua những năm tháng sống cùng căn bệnh CIPA (vô cảm với nỗi đau) quái ác và tiền án về tội sử dụng biện pháp trợ tử trong ngành y học.

Cha Yo Han luôn hết mình chữa trị cho bệnh nhân nhưng anh lại không hi vọng quá nhiều vào sự sống của mình cho đến khi gặp được cô gái thuần khiết, ấm áp Kang Si Young. Hai con người đều có vết thương lòng sâu nặng bất ngờ gặp vào nhau. Họ bỗng trở nên thấu hiểu đối phương và dần chữa lành trái tim cho nhau.
