Why "Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story" Is a Must-See Anime
Tumblr media
Eve is an underground golfer who competes to support street orphans, using her skills to destroy the spirits of her opponents. One day she meets her match, a Japanese girl who is just as skilled as her... and the match is on!
Reprinted from The Geekiary, my History Hermann WordPress blog, and Wayback Machine. This was the thirty-seventh article I wrote for The Geekiary. This post was originally published on May 14, 2022.
Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story is sports anime directed by Takayuki Inagaki. It centers on Eve, a girl who golfs illegally to raise money for three orphans, in a European county, Nafres, and the rich Japanese girl who matches her skill and determination to a tee.
As a warning, this recommendation discusses spoilers for the first six episodes of Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story.
Tumblr media
Eve and her friend Lily outside of their residence in the slums
Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story is much more than a common sports anime story. The latter is very popular. Some consider it an "outstanding" subgenre within shonen. Fans cheer for specific teams and become entranced in the plays of their favorite characters.
Eve (voiced by Kito Akari) is a scrappy, spunky teenager. She often works alongside her friend and caddy, Lily Lipmann (voiced by Akira Sekine). Eve uses her masterful golf skills to earn money through underground golf games. She strives to ensure that she, Lily, Klein Clara (voiced by Kinoshita Sayaka), Lily's sister, and Klein's three adopted children can continue living in their hovel in the slums.
This all changes when she meets Aoi Tenwa (voiced by Asami Seto). Aoi is a Japanese girl who likes playing golf for pleasure rather than for money. She is immediately impressed by Eve's golf drives and challenges her to a game. Their talents collide. Eve, nicknamed the "Rainbow Bullet", uses her skills to face off against Aoi, learning the pleasure behind golf itself.
Mafia bosses Catherine, Rose Alleon, and Nicholas, have dynamic personalities. The same is the case for Aoi's caddy and adviser, Amane Shoijo and Rose's right-hand woman, Anri. Aoi's mother, and CEO of Tenwashi Group, has a strong personality as well. The famous underground golfer, Vipère, also known as the "Grim Reaper", and junior golf champion Helene Robert leave a lasting impression.
The series also features characters such as Eve's former golf "master", Leo Millafoden, wanna-be professional caddy at Raijin Girls' Academy, Ichina Saotome, Raijin Girls' Academy adviser Reiya Amuro, and hard-working golfer at Raijin Girls' Academy, Kinue Jinguji. Skilled voice actors such as Shuichi Ikeda, Saki Fujita, Toru Furuya, and Nakahara Mai voiced these characters.
Also appearing in the series is golf ace Mizuho Himekawa, a golfer who works with Mizuho at Nadanan Sports Girls' Academy, Kaede Oikawa, a high-ranked golfer at Kaoran Girls' High School, Kaoruko Iijima, Kaoruko's golfing pair, Kuyou Iseshiba, a skilled golfer at Raijin Girls' Academy, Haruka Misono, an injured golfer named Chris Christie and Aoi's father, Kazuhiko Hodaka. Yukari Tamura, Yuu Kobayashi, M ・ A ・ O, Satomi Arai, and Kiyoko Yonekura voice these characters.
The series theme song, composed and written by Kohmi Hirose, and arranged by Suketo Makusu, is full of energy. It makes you excited about watching each episode. Hirose, on the show's official website, said that she arranged the song with "raw strings" and that she sang it with all her heart, hoping to give "more momentum" to the series.
youtube
Unlike other anime, diversity is central to Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story. In fact, a scene in the theme song hints that a Black female golfer, whose character has not been introduced yet, will appear in a future episode.
That is unique because anime and Black characters have a "sketchy past". Even with some amazing Black characters in the past, Black characters are "a little under-represented" in anime.
Although their names and voices are not yet known, Klein reveals, in the show's sixth episode, that her three adopted children, orphans who she took in, will be deported if she, Lily, and Eve are evicted from their home. The complexions of these cute orphans are shades of light to darker brown, implying they could be from countries in Asia, Africa, and elsewhere.
Even though the orphans seem to bond more with Lily, than with Eve, they don't ignore Eve. In fact, in one episode, Eve misses her match with Aoi, due to a late-night match with Vipère (voiced by Kaori Nazuka), a golfer contracted by Mafia boss Nicholas.
The orphans approach her in a childlike way, getting her out of her funk and pushing her to not wallow in her sorrow. This leads her to begin a virtual reality golf game later in the episode.
At the end of the fifth episode, and a major plot point in the sixth episode, is the issue of "urban renewal" and corrupt politicians. The former indicates racial injustices which are part and parcel of the system.
The neighborhood where Eve and her friends live is hinted to be a "dangerous" place, with shootings, corruption, and a presumed thriving black market. Even so, this is portrayed as a cold, hard reality, as part of a system imposed upon them.
There is more than political bribes, assassinations, and a Mafia-backed "redevelopment" plan in Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story. This show's off-the-wall logic and over-the-top melodrama come to the fore with the scheduled demolition of Eve's home. It is the opening salvo of gentrification, necessitating evictions and the destruction of residences. In their place will be a casino and the "necessary" accouterments.
There is debate on whether gentrification is a "process of change" creating conflict between new arrivals to a neighborhood and long-time residents or a process in which an influx of middle-class or wealthy people stream into a poor area of a city, rebuilding and renovating businesses and houses, often displacing the poorer residents. In any case, if the development plan is successful, the slum will be turned, over time, into an "upper-middle-class playground".
Although some episodes of City of Ghosts, an all-aged animated series, talk about gentrification in San Francisco, this anime is different. It smacks you in the face with its focus on inequality, immigration, deportation, and political corruption. This anime makes clear that some, like Mafia bosses, will do anything to get what they want, rigging and manipulating the political system for their benefit.
With Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story, you can't ignore, look away, or push off these themes as something that only exists in a fantasy world. They are something that the characters have to confront. After all, Eve's determination to face Aoi in another match resulted in Catherine (voiced by Umeka Shoji) using underhanded methods to get her into the U15 Women's World Championship.
This led Eve to unknowingly trigger the Mafia-backed slum redevelopment plan. The area, including the hovel where she, Lily, Klein, and Klein's three adopted children, is being demolished, along with other illegal shops, as part of a racially tinged "urban renewal" plan.
This makes her feel guilty and furious with herself, and with Rose (voiced by Toa Yukinari). After training with Vipère, who has become her friend-of-sorts, she sides against Catherine and Rose. She plays on behalf of another Mafia boss, Nicholas, and against Rose, her former mentor.
Future episodes of the series, with a possible 12-episode order, will shine a light on this subject. It is a topic that I've never seen any other anime focus on. It is something that Western animation would shy away from, wanting to be "kid-friendly" and appeal to network executives.
Tumblr media
Aoi and Eve together in a virtual reality golf game both in costumes
The official site of Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story declaresthat this is the "first original anime series" which focuses on women's golf. Whether that is the case or not, girls' love, i.e. yuri, is a central component in the story. In fact, Briana Lawrence's article for The Mary Sue, entitled "There’s No Heterosexual Explanation for the Golf Girl Anime" inspired me to start watching this series in the first place!
Whether or not Eve or Aoi are a canon romantic couple, there are clear yuri vibes. This manifests itself in their interactions with one another. Both are excited to face each other in golf games and care about each other on some level.
From the get-go, Aoi is impressed with Eve's golf style, after she sees Helene (voiced by Minami Takahashi) walk away in defeat, complete with "Blue Bullet[s]" and other magical girl-esque golf drives. Eve is amazed at Aoi's developed golf skills. All the while, Amane (voiced by Ami Koshimizu) repeatedly fails in attempts to make Aoi "forget" Eve.
Aoi's mother (voiced by Yuko Kaida) even investigates Eve after Aoi gushes about her when returning to Japan. After it is clear that "Eve Aleon", her "official" name during the U15 Women's World Championship, is not real, she determines her to not be a threat.
She declares that since Eve is an underground golfer with ties to the Mafia, working for a crime syndicate obsessed with golf, she is not a "threat". While this going on, Eve, dressed as a catgirl, meets Aoi in a virtual reality golf game frequented by Japanese players. After Eve apologizes for missing an early morning golf game with Aoi, both play a round of virtual golf together.
Steve Jones, writing for Anime News Network, states that like any other sports anime, the rivalry Eve and Aoi have is romantic, as much as "anything else". This would be the case even if the series implies they are half-sisters like Cassandra and Rapunzel in Tangled.
Jones argued, in another review, that Eve dismisses Vipére's flirtation, declaring that Aoi's name is "already inscribed in her heart". He rightly described this as an example of a "real disaster lesbian hours". He adds that even if these romantic tropes are only a device to add more layers to the story, it "doesn't make it any less gay." I can't agree more!
The series has been received positively by fans on Twitter and elsewhere. Some have shipped Eve and Vipére, noted beautiful female characters, and said the show is amazing, and a masterpiece.
The Eve and Vipére ship has some basis in the show. Both train together for the upcoming match between Eve and her former mentor, Rose. The game, taking place in the next scheduled episode, will decide the fate of her home at a special golf course owned and operated by Catherine, a shrewd Mafia boss.
Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story is more than "golf yuri" as Jones describes it. Rather the series is energetic, gleefully weird, and almost makes golf something that is cool and fun to watch, even if the sport itself is boring (in my opinion).
Accounts focusing on yuri anime news and anime fans have flocked to the show. Some have stated that the show has a lot of "girl bosses" and is "lesbians playing golf with mafia and explosions". Others love Eve as a character and declared that the anime is full of "hot ladies."
Tumblr media
The three yet-to-be-named orphans of Klein are immigrants and will be deported if they are evicted from their home in the slums
You could recognize, as Jones did, that the series takes place in the Madlax cinematic universe. This could imply that the fan servicey yuri drama, Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid, and this series, are in the same universe. He argues that the writing of Yousuke Koruda has a lot to the ridiculousness of this anime, making it feel, as Jones put it "so special and stupefying."
All in all, there is no doubt that this anime is much more mature than Western animations, like The Owl House or The Ghost and Molly McGee. It has explosions, death, violence, blood, and all the rest, almost akin to Helluva Boss at some points. Even so, the orphans add a degree of cuteness to the series making you invested in the characters.
In fact, in the sixth episode of Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story, Eve revealed that she has no memories of her past beyond a few years ago. She tells Vipére that she had some sort of special golf abilities, implying that she is a golf supersoldier. This could be hinting that she is a long-forgotten half-sister of Aoi. In any case, human experimentation will likely be a future theme.
Episodes in the rest of this season, and a possible second season, may tackle Eve's often-overconfidence, determination to do anything to beat her friends, and reckless golf playing. Such passionate playing got her involved in some shady dealings. It also resulted in her becoming a walking advertisement for certain products, as she was at the U15 Women's World Championship.
There may be more rigged games too. After all, during the golf tournament, Anri (voiced by Omikawa Chiaki), at the direction of Rose, pointed a laser in Aoi's eye so she would miss the shot. In another episode, Vipère used a poisonous scent to throw Eve off her game. It remains to be seen if Eve escapes the web of Mafia control.
I'm not a big sports person myself and dislike the whole sports culture. Previous sports anime I've watched, like Kandagawa Jet Girls and Tamayomi, were only mildly interesting. Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story is different. I liked it a lot better than I thought I would.
Eve might travel to Japan, meet Aoi, and challenge her to a game. She might continue underground golf games and intense training with Vipére. Her shady, underground dealings may pull in her friends. Again, golf matches will continue to "solve" disputes. Although Eve has put Aoi in the back of her mind as she fights to save her home, they will cross paths again in the future.
Those who work on this series are a talented bunch. The show's director, Takayuki Inagaki, worked on Rosario + Vampire and Chio's School Road. Kuroda, the show's writer, wrote for Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid, Mobile Suit Gundam 00, and My Hero Academia. A professional golf coach named Toru Inoue and the Global Golf Media Group worked with the show's staff to make sure it accurately portrays golf games.
If Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story ever gets a dub, Black voice actors may voice some of the orphans and the Black female golfer. This would add to the growing roster of Black voice actors for anime dubs.
The series is currently streaming on Crunchyroll. The next episode, entitled "Aoi-colored Bullet", will air on May 17.
Go watch this anime!

songs sung by beyblade VAs #2
a couple of people were interested in another post with songs by beyblade seiyuu... well alright, this comes with the fact that in addition to the main five, there's a small handful of big name seiyuu in bakuten shoot who have done a lot of everything and the rest have done pretty much nothing, so, this is a very mixed bag. and a bit too many of these are hetalia songs because i just actually really like hetalia music ok
# a link to the previous post if you missed it #
i put these in alpahbetical order according to character names so you can easily just check whoever you want. or whatever. do what you want with these
hiroshi kamiya (blood & garland):
lost in shinsekai (one piece)
dark side of the moon (shingeki no kyojin)

junko shimakata (kiki):
kimi no ouen uta (sotsugyou -graduation-)

akiko kimura (raul & yuuya):
yasashii mirai (inazuma eleven chrono stone) -- with aoi yuuki
hikaru ikeda (salima):
katakoi (yakin byoutou) -- apparently this song is from a porn that's regarded as the most brutally graphic hentai to ever exist? sounds good
tomokazu sugita (sergei):
SM hantei forum (inu x boku SS)
one jump ahead (aladdin)
kenichi suzumura (steve):
oreta tsubasa de -with broken wings- (digimon frontier) -- i was getting tired at this point and steve is a very minor character with a very major seiyuu for whatever reason and i didn't even feel like browsing suzumura's discography for this purpose so i just put my boy kouichi's amazing song here and called it a day. the best digimon character song to existtt
takehito koyasu (volkov):
dengon (fushigi yuugi)
hyakumankai no je t'aime (rosario + vampire) -- the difference in mood between these two songs was too much for me. good thing this is the end of the list

Time Travel CH 19
HOLY JEEZ, THIS TOOK A WHILE. LEGIT, I sat down for like four hours to write this. I wanted to make sure things were kinda accurate, plus dealing with FEELS. But y’all have five pages worth, at least LOL.
Part 18
Masterlist
——+++——
Toshizō unlocked the door to his shared apartment. The sudden thought of how they decided to live together came to him. He chuckled at the memory and kicked off his shoes, “I’m home.” He could smell something cooking. She’d gotten home first, so dinner was left up to her. They took turns, depending on who made it home first. Sometimes they’d order out.
"Toshi! Welcome home.“ She peered over at him, turning off the burner, and noticed he was lost in thought already. There was something else on his mind, after all, he’d visited Souji early in the morning. Besides work, there was a lot on his mind with Souji. Even after all this time, though talking to Sano and her, he still blamed himself for the death of his younger brother.
“Thanks,” Toshizō grunted and absentmindedly sat on the couch. A black cat jumped next to him, rubbing against his hand, asking for attention. He scratched the cat behind the ears. It was one of the precious things Souji had left them. Souji had picked up this cat while he was living at the dorms and dumped him on Toshizō’s doorstep after nursing back him to health. The little shit had named him Toshizō, and the cat didn’t appreciate having his name changed.*
Satomi picked up Toshizō and set him down, taking Toshi’s hand in hers. “I’m here when you’re ready to tell me what’s on your mind. I doubt it’s the next surgery or paperwork.”
He gave her a very thin smile and gave her hand a squeeze. “Aa, I know. It’s just…there’s something that came up. I have to discuss some things with Kondō-san and Sannan-san before I can tell you.”
Satomi got closer to him, laying her head on his chest. Toshizō closed his eyes, running his fingers through her black hair. Her presence alone was enough to soothe him. “It’s that big of a secret you can’t tell me then?”
“Aa. At least not yet. Believe me, it’s…complicated. You will find out.”
Chizuru stroked his hair. Souji had exhausted himself and settled his head in her lap. Eventually, she’d dozed off as well.
Souji woke up first and shifted a little to look up at Chizuru’s face. Her presence was rather comforting and soothing. She smelled vaguely of cherry blossoms. He reached up to cup her cheek, expecting her to awaken, but she stayed sleeping. Just what did his counterpart see in this Chizuru? Sure, she was cute, good on the eyes, but why had he loved her? All the “memories” he’d been seeing, they had such warm feelings attached to them whenever Chizuru was in them.
“Souji…” She murmured, her eyes fluttering slightly. She leaned down to kiss his forehead.
Souji chuckled. “Are you awake, Chizuru-chan?” He waved a hand in front of her.
Her eyes snapped open. She thought she’d been dreaming. The only way to see her Souji was in her dreams. "Ah, Okita-san! I’m sorry! I was still asleep!”
He stood up after spotting his sword leaning against the wall, next to the tv. “Ne, Chizuru-chan,”
She rubbed her eyes and looked over at him. “Yes, Okita-san?”
Souji picked up his sword, unsheathing it, feeling a sense of familiarity and calmness. It was the only thing that had come with him, the only thing that was familiar.“If you tell anyone about last night, I’ll kill you.” He strode over to the couch, pointing the sword at her neck.
Chizuru looked up into his eyes. He didn’t have that amused sparkle in his eyes that she expected him to have. His mouth was curved into a sadistic smile. She’d never seen this expression on her Souji’s face. It was a painful reminder that her Souji wouldn’t return to her. The man in front of him just bore his face. “O-Okita-san…”
The look of fear on her face was reminiscent of the Chizuru he’d first met. She had been terrified at his “jokes.” “Don’t forget that I’m me. I’m not the same soft Okita Souji you knew. Don’t confuse us.”
She didn’t, couldn’t move.
He burst out laughing, and sheathed his sword in one fluid and quick movement. “I was joking, Chizuru-chan. Not entirely.” He sat down near the journals.
“Okita-san…you’re unbelievable! That’s not something to joke about!” Chizuru grabbed a pillow and smacked the back of his head with it.
Souji knew he deserved that. “…Chizuru…”
She stopped as she was about to throw another pillow at him.
“…thank you. For being there last night.” He whispered.
“…it’s nothing…” She mumbled, getting up from the couch to go to her room to take a shower and start breakfast.
Souji stared at the old, worn journals in the box. Some of them looked vaguely familiar, since every now and again, he’d take time out of his day to ransack Hijikata-san’s room and read his “diaries.” He finally reached into the box to pull out the first one. There was a letter inside.
Dear Hijikata family,
I have managed to find these journals from the time that Hijikata Toshizō-san arrived in Kyoto with the rest of the Shinsengumi members, up until almost the end of the war. I implore you to keep Hijikata Toshizō-san and the Shinsengumi’s history alive by passing down these journals for generations to come, so people can learn about who the Shinsengumi really were.
From Hijikata Toshizō-san’s Page, Yukimura.
Chizuru-chan? He recognized her handwriting. What business did she have recovering Hijikata-san’s journals? He didn’t know how the rest of it played out. He had only read the part about Kondō-san. Maybe Hijikata-san would give him a more detailed explanation of what actually happened to the Shinsengumi.
He skimmed the first few journals that he talked about when they were the Roshigumi. He remembered all of it too well. After the incident in Ikeda, he started to read more carefully. The dates were smudged a bit, but he could make out the month and year.
June 1865
Souji…that bastard…I heard him and Yukimura talking. He doesn’t plan on telling us about his tuberculosis. I’ve already told him I can’t send him back to Ezo. I can only keep an eye on him and make him rest as much as I can. That guy’s going to hate me for it…
By this point, some idiot named Itou infiltrated the Shinsengumi, and according to Hijikata-san, he was playing Kondō-san. Sannan-san had drank Ochimizu and became the Colonel of the Furies, though the words “Rasetsu,” “Oni,” and “Ochimizu” were smudged out. Every time Hijikata-san mentioned it, the words were smudged out, so to anyone else reading it, they wouldn’t know what he was talking about.
Souji sighed, so Chizuru-chan and Hijikata-san found out about his illness then? Whether his life was short or long, he was going to do all he could with his sword for the Shinsengumi and Kondō-san. Dying in a bed didn’t suit him, nor would he have let it happen. This Mother Hen would say otherwise to his choices.
April 1867
Heisuke and Saitō left us to join the Guard. The path Kondō-san and I carving didn’t seem to agree with them, but we will continue forward, with or without them. They have their own roads to carve and follow.
It was hard for him to picture the ever-loyal-to-Hijikata-san-Hajime-kun leave the Shinsengumi. He could understand Heisuke, but Hajime-kun was a bit of a shock. He continued reading.
November 1867
Heisuke has come back to us after we’ve managed to pull off our stunt, but at a cost. He’s now joined Sannan-san. Many of the guys have mixed feelings, but in the end, I think we’re all relieved he’s back. For now, Saitō needs to lay low before he can come back to us. He’s played an important in all of this, I couldn’t be more grateful he kept Kondō-san from being assassinated by the Guard.
So, Heisuke had become a fury. He couldn’t picture the sweet Eighth Division Captain killing others for joy and drinking their blood. The white hair. The red eyes. He couldn’t picture it on him, but somehow he’d become one.
December 1867
There was an attempt to assassinate Kondō-san. Souji gave me his two cents on the matter, he’s still a kid…Of course, it doesn’t mean he’s completely wrong. It’s my fault. I should’ve convinced Kondō-san to take more men with him.
That same night, Souji ****** and killed the men that had attempted to assassinate him. Yukimura went after him, and we were able to find them both thanks to her.
Now, Souji has joined both Sannan-san and Heisuke. Kondō-san is disappointed in himself and in Souji for what he’s become. I should’ve been watching him more carefully.
How interesting…He did end up drinking Ochimizu. It didn’t matter what he had to do to get rid of Kondō-san’s enemies, even become a beast. He owed him his life and much more. The war raged on and even Hijikata-san himself and Hajime-kun succumbed to the Ochimizu. The Choshu Ronin, an Oni, he guessed, was the cause of this. Hijikata-san had sent Chizuru with him and Kondō-san to Osaka to recover from wounds. The cause of his own wounds was also smudged out.
The war raged on and Hijikata-san struggled with decisions. Their comrades left, Shinpachi-san and Sano-san left. Hajime-kun stayed with the Aizu Domain.
May 1868
Kondō-san…has surrendered to the new government. He ordered me to continue moving forward with the Shinsengumi name on my shoulders…Souji somehow managed to find me and give me a good punch. There wasn’t much strength to it, since his tuberculosis was still present, even though *******. He and Yukimura traveled far to track me down. We both felt it, Kondō-san’s death. I had no excuse for him. I am just as angry as he is that Kondō-san was executed like a common criminal. That man was the most honorable and noble Warrior to have ever existed. He died smiling. That person that gave so much even when we didn’t have anything, was gone, executed brutally. He still died a real Warrior, a true Samurai, more than these sons of bitches that turned tail and sided with the Satchō.
He and Yukimura…seemed to have gotten involved, but both know that it doesn’t seem like Souji will last much longer. We all knew it. He collapsed and was taken to the infirmary.
Yukimura stayed with him until his last moment. I stood outside, waiting. She finally came out, unable to say a word, crying her eyes out. I never thought I’d hear the little shit say he loved a woman in such a sincere voice. I ordered her to find a place of her own, away from the war, it’s no place for a woman. I ain’t a coward that takes down a woman with him.
Souji blinked, rereading the last page again. It wasn’t his death that had shocked him, though he was severely disappointed he had died in bed, unable to avenge Kondo-san, it was the fact that he and Chizuru…were together. In his life, he’d come to love Chizuru-chan. The same feelings that were in the memories he saw…He would’ve had them too if he had continued living the life in Ezo. He and Chizuru…
He took a few moments to absorb Hijikata-san’s thoughts and feelings. There was so much to process. The way his comrades, friends, had gone to carve their own paths. Kondo-san’s death…Hijikata-san had a lot on his shoulders…he had been burdened with so many things. The world changed too rapidly for them.
June 1969
I fought alongside Heisuke and Sannan-san to get rid of the remaining *******, but not long after that, they turned to ash, they ************. You two fought well, take care of the others for me, Gen-san, Yamazaki, Kondō-san, Saitō, Souji. I’ll join you someday soon.
I made sure to destroy anything related to ******. That must never repeat itself. Before Sannan-san was gone, he gave me the location of his research. I ran into that ****, Amagiri. He said that that Kazama had destroyed Kodo-san’s research and ******. Apparently, Heisuke and Sannan-san had helped him destroy that army he’d created.
Last I heard of Yukimura, she’s been trying to track me down, but she’s made a good life for herself in the temple I left her at. The elderly lady I sent a letter to told me there’s a nice guy that’s been looking after her. Maybe she’ll finally live well, have some kids, a good husband, after all of this. She deserves it.
Now, it seems like I’ve come to the end. The Tokugawa is collapsing. What do I have left? I ain’t going to battle to win, I’m going to go down like a true Warrior. Someone’s gotta go down with the Tokugawa, and it’d be disgraceful if no one went down with them. But, I’m gonna give them hell and give them the best fight they’ve ever seen. I’m carrying the Shinsengumi name with me, so I will die honorably and proudly by the paths we’ve made for ourselves.
 That was the last entry.
Souji set the journal down.
Hijikata-san endured so much. Death, political power, honor. He wouldn’t have admitted it back then, but Hijikata-san had died a real Warrior.
Souji stared blankly at the floor, fighting back his emotions. They’d lost everything they’d worked for. Everything they’d all endured together.
He was alone.
He certainly felt alone. Everyone he knew was gone, it had not quite sunken in, being surrounded by the look-alikes. He’d felt…like he almost belonged. But this was not his time, these were not the people he had fought battles with , shared drinks with, they merely looked like them and almost spoke like them, but they were completely different. He had not realized how different they were. They came from two different worlds, times.
“Okita-san? I brought you your medicine and some tea.” Chizuru placed the tray on the table, about to pick up a cup to hand it to him.
Souji pulled her into his arms without warning. She protested slightly, but remained quiet when she heard him murmur, “Please, just for a little while.” He held her tightly, burying his face into her shoulder, breathing in her sweet cherry blossom scent.
Part Twenty
—-+++—–
This chapter has been the one that I poured more time and effort to omg. I hope you all liked it! I’M STILL HAVING FEELS. This was a difficult chapter to write, no lie. ME, BRAIN, WE BETTER BE GETTING SOME FLUFF SOON. Also @sabinasanfanfic‘s OC makes an official appearance!
BTW, the cat named Toshizo, Souji did this in a Drama CD LOL one of my personal favorites.
EDIT: @sabinasanfanfic wrote an AMAZING AND CUTE piece on how Hiji-san ended up with little Toshizo, Read It Here (THANK YOU SENPAI, I LOVE IT SO MUCH, *FANGIRLS*)

The High School Fleet anime originally aired on April 7, 2016. Yuu Nobuta (A Good Librarian Like a Good Shepherd) directed the project at Production IMS, with Naoto Nakamura providing character designs. Reiko Yoshida (The Cat Returns, Girls und Panzer) was in charge of series composition for the show.
The title spawned an OVA, which hit retailers in 2017.
Aniplex of America currently holds the domestic rights to the High School Fleet anime. They describe the title as:
Living by the sea, protecting the sea, and journeying across the sea…They’re the BLUE MERMAIDS! Because of a shift in tectonic plates around 100 years ago, Japan lost much of its area to submergence. To preserve Japan’s territories, Coastal Cities sprung up, one after the other. Eventually, they became Marine Cities, and along with the expansion of sea-lanes to connect them, the need arose for a sizable staff to protect the seas. At the same time, maritime jobs were becoming more popular among women. Hence, the BLUE MERMAIDS, tasked with keeping the seas safe, had become every female student’s dream job. This is when childhood friends Akeno Misaki and Moeka China enroll in a marine high school in Yokosuka, along with other girls who share their goal of “BECOMING A BLUE MERMAID.”
