I don't know if you pay attention to any DR collabs, but I thought you'd appreciate this one! Particularly the amount of detail to Komaeda: the corrupted halo with the symbol on his shirt in it, the single horn, the chain....I'm so obsessed with this collab and its implications are making my head spin in a good way

I don’t particularly look into collabs often (my attention is everywhere), but this does have a lot of interesting choices! It plays well into Komahina’s similarities and differences. They’re already have religious-like undertones inside sdr2 anyway because of what Hope’s Peak Academy was to them. Izuru Kamukura’s name could be read as “exiled from the throne of gods” if I remember correctly, like a god thats unbelonging to the realm of mortals.

Though, I think the wiki decided to read his name divided. So instead they see it like his individual characteristics. Out of place compared to normal people and the vessel for a “god” or power that’s godlike.

My heart burns seeing that Hinata is not an angel like the other protagonists. Akamatsu is not an angel here because she had been forced into becoming a traitor in her narrative and the first killer, but for Hinata, this is about his position as the unchosen by god (HPA). However, he worships its image no matter how its ideals view “scum” like him. So he has a priest stole on his design as a demon trying to redeem himself.

Komaeda…. I’ve always had trouble with that symbol on his shirt as it’s meant to be shifty looking but that’s about it. But now that I’m looking at it here, I guess it would make sense to see it as a bastardized reticle as I compare it to the other protagonists halos. Like how his views are focused but in the wrong aspects. Or I’m just looking too much into it haha! It doesn’t matter, the point of him being a corrupt angel is because of his close following to a fundamentally corrupt outlook that’s impassive to an extreme.

Or hmm… I guess the collab planners were more so thinking along the lines of his soft demeanor Vs his harsh views that are unforgiving, even against himself. His death is obviously one of a “selfless martyr”, even if it’s purpose was not for anyone but his own sake (I have too much to say about the way he died). It’s his one foot in, one foot out attitude that caused him to have only one horn in this design. I couldn’t actually tell if that was a horn.

His chain reminds me of how I view its place on this design in UDG. The chain is paradoxical, just as he is. The chain to his collar binds him to the whims of hope and despair as its willing slave to the bigger picture, but is that really the case if the chain is not attached to anything? He has too much of his own will and beliefs guiding him contrary to how he believes them to be the truest fact of life that lives through him. Like Peko, how can you be a tool if the “tool” is a human being?

I think that’s all I got right now. I know I have a pattern of saying that I’m tired at the end of my posts, but I am!! I can’t help it.

revamped them a bit

stylistically not much has changed but i did put a sticker over the icon on polaris's laptop and added the prep school logo from chihiro's original design to the vest

some other stuff i came up with on the fly:

polaris is not wearing a school uniform despite how it might look. she didn't attend school consistently since she was on the run from her shit ass family but she likes the aesthetic so most of her clothes look vaguely academic

polaris's laptop is actually something custom-made by some tech company in the togami conglomerate. one of the first things she did with it was deactivate all the tracking and background programs and more or less gut its operating system

if chihiro hadn't stepped up to help his father's company he would have gone down the route of research and programming. as it is he knows enough about tech and software to be able to work with them, but not to the degree of being an 'ultimate'

chihiro did go to a private school but only attended it sporadically since he was also co-running an entire company. but he usually wears his school outfit to give the impression of being an innocent fancy lad (however, the cross-tie was not originally from the school's uniform)

what was komaeda like during his school years at hpa?

bc there are contradicting stuff in the series

in sdr2, it was because of the stress of the killing game that caused him to be active in causing mayhem, like convincing ppl to kill in ch1 and 2

in island mode, he's pretty harmless, he just says some out of pocket stuff from time to time

but in makoto's secret file, komaeda was "constantly getting into trouble, so much so that it concerned the headmaster"

and idk if he's just being weird, or he just straight up doing criminal stuff in hpa

(if the former was true, i find it ao funny bc in the short story, the board of directors, four old men, shuddered at the mere thought of this guy)

returning back to topic, i wonder what kind of environment hpa actually is. bc it is described as the most peaceful and hopeful time before junko came along. we never actually saw what its actually like inside

if its a really stressful environment, almost matching the stress of the killing games, then it would make sense that komaeda would start shit up; otherwise it doesnt

in the dr3 anime, it really seems like its a very laid back school, where the stress only came from the examinations that come from time to time. other than that, the students just do their own thing in the meantime, i dont think they even hold classes

well, i dont think the dr3 anime is canon, cuz its not written by the dr team nor kodaka

Thinking about Kipperlilly Copperkettle and how she's always had an issue with rage and a nagging, gnawing instinct that things aren't "right" and things aren't "fair" and this instinct flares whenever the Bad Kids are in view, are mentioned in passing.

She is smarter than them, yet she is passed over for accolades.

She has accomplished things in her own right, yet they are not discussed as fondly, as commonly, as the Bad Kids' deeds.

She has done everything "right", born to the "right" family, pursued the "right" class, is doing school the "right" way and it can't even win her, what should be, a stupid election.

And this anger builds and builds until she can't take it and tries to find out what it is about the Bad Kids makes them so special, and in doing so gets a peek behind the curtain of their world.

That the Bad Kids are the only beings in this world with free will, as they are PCs. Meanwhile Kipperlilly is an NPC.

Which means she will never be the hero in her story. Nothing she could ever do will make a difference. The one thing the Bad Kids have that she doesn't is agency.

And so if that's the case, if she can't be the hero in her story given the constraints, she will be the "villain" to the Bad Kids in the hope that, in doing so, she can break the wheel and reclaim her agency.

And this anger, this sense of injustice, is why Ankarra finds Kipperlilly to be the perfect instrument to reenter the world. Why Kipperlilly finds Ankarra to be the perfect weapon to set against her enemies. A devil's bargain.
