There used to be a time when the Fell family wasn’t the reflection of a cup half empty. There was once a Virtue family of four, one that appeared solid enough to the outside looking in. The parents had often – and unsurprisingly – been busy with their individual jobs, but they tried their best to have family gatherings. Sometimes, it felt like there was always a lot of trying in that family. But as both parents faded in different ways, the gatherings became less frequent by the daughters they left behind. Months had passed by with nothing more than simple birthday messages, or the occasional “how are you?” that tended to fall flat even over text. Whitney would say she was just busy. But perhaps having a job was a rather poor excuse for not spending time with her own sister, especially when they both literally lived in the same building.

Either way, they happened to be in the same building again that day, albeit unintentionally. Whitney was briefly conversing with a few colleagues in the hallway, thanking them as they handed her a few documents previously asked for. Excusing herself, her gaze scanned over a few pages as she continued walking. Though once her attention did flicker forward again, Whit halted at the unexpected sight of Savannah.

the resort was beautiful - pristine beaches, glittering waters, the kind of place people dreamed of for a honeymoon. and yet, savannah felt nothing but quiet detachment. she stood on the balcony, arms resting lightly on the railing, eyes fixed on the horizon rather than acknowledging the other person behind her. the ocean breeze lifted strands of her hair, but she barely felt it. “there are rules,” she said finally, her voice even. “we keep up appearances in public. we share a room, not a bed. and whatever idea you have about us - ” she exhaled, finally turning to face them, her expression unreadable. “let it go.”

I should have known the thought of us was way too good to be true.

That haunting thought filled her mind every day that Savannah had been gone. Not a word from him, but not a word TO him either. How the hell could she even face him, especially now. That positive test had sent her further into a spiral that thankfully her father was able to pull her out of temporarily. Savannah knew he'd be there for her no matter what but there still was the issue of having to tell Landon he was going to be a father. God, how had she fucked up that bad to let this happen? Not married, not even engaged. Deep down she knew there was never really a timeline with these kinds of things but she would have preferred for them to at least be on speaking terms. Maybe on the way to a house instead of a high rise apartment. Now she was back in town and back in her own home that felt more empty than it had before. Devoid of the presence of Landon at every turn. He wasn't there cooking dinner, he wasn't there hunched over a laptop typing away to hit a deadline. He was just-- gone. And she had been the one to push him. Her own anger issues clouding her better judgement on how to handle the accusations thrown her way. She'd been trained better than that. To not crack when someone got under her skin but that was for criminals. No one taught her how to deal with it when it was the person you loved most thinking you'd done something unspeakable.

Savannah just smiles between the two men. The two most important men in her life now. Never really thought she'd have someone other than her dad since her job had truly -- consumed her life. But she'd liked it like that back then. Now she doesn't want to see a life without either of them. 'Hyping me up as usual.' Cedric replied with a chuckle, giving Landon the same sturdy gripped hand shake back before his hands go to his hips. Looking between his daughter and him. He couldn't deny, that they made a good looking pair, but he'd not say it out loud. Savannah would have a fit. 'She's told me you know a thing or two around the kitchen as well. At least I know she's eating more than frozen dinners every night now.'

'Dad,' Savannah groaned but had a smile on her face nonetheless. She loved being here, a weightless sense of freedom and peace this far away from the chaos of her professional life. 'We'll be right back.' Taking hold of Landon's hand again and starting to lead him back towards where her old room was. 'See? Wasn't so bad right?' Trying to reassure Landon that things were going just fine. Her dad wasn't all that judgmental. So long as Savannah was happy, he would be.

Stepping into that old bedroom was like stepping back into a different time. Ceiling covered in those glow in the dark star stickers that probably barely worked anymore. The wall where her bed was pressed against was covered in hanging polaroid pictures of a younger version of herself, some with friends. Some of random places, a few candid's of her dad. Overall it was your standard teenage bedroom. A wave of nostalgia washed over her again just seeing all of these old things. 'Go on and say it by the way. savannah usually let most things slide right off her; she wasn't exactly about to engage in some sort of turf war over who got what cases. half her fellow interns would flunk out anyways, overwhelmed by the pressure and stress that came with actually being a doctor. blood and guts were fun when you were in med school, but now it was the real deal.

but she had a point, and mckenna was crossing it more and more every day. just because she didn't need every case didn't mean she didn't want cases - and when a high profile one came up, an option to help assist during a live surgery, she knew she wasn't about to let mckenna take it from her this time.
