candle: how did you meet your best friend? i have a couple best friends, but i’ll talk about the one with the funniest story! we technically met on the playground when we were like… 4? and she invited me to her birthday even though i don’t think we had never spoken before. i ended up going and there are pictures of us hanging out at the party 🥺🥺 then we ended up in the same homeroom for all 3 years of junior high and that’s when we truly became inseparable.

Thought on english lops? They look really cute but they also look like their ears would be more of a burden than useful

got some good commentary on elops a few posts down.  i don’t care for them aesthetically and apparently they are prone to dying of random ailments after 3-5 years so they aren’t very long-lived or hardy due to likely over and inbreeding.  apparently the ears aren’t their biggest issue lol

Hey I'm not sure how destructive Clyde is but one of my girls has just become a solo rat because of all her cage mates passing (and she's older) and she loved the McDonald's beanie babies. She has two she's pulled into her igloo to cuddle with. Just an idea for Clyde 😊

hmmmmm i will try it. i tried giving one of my old rats one of the IKEA stuffed rats to snuggle and she never touched it. i still have it.

I've been curious, what's the difference between a kangal and an anatolian sheperd? They look the same to me

that is probably because most of the photos of “kangals” you’ve seen are actually just anatolian shepherd that have had their ears cropped, which is what almost literally every “kangal” you see in america is tbh (they like, barely exist outside of place of origin as much as a lot of lgd people like to pretend they do. like im serious if the dog was not imported from turkey they are like 98.9% probably just an anatolian shepherd, which is fine anatolians are great dogs but idk why people have a hard on for pretending their dog is something it isnt anyways i degress fin bracket)

Hey could you tell us some about cavalier king charles spaniels? I really want one in the distant future but I want to know more about stuff they're prone to and what to look out for. (the only thing I ever hear anything about is the heart valve problem because it's the most common thing)

The heart valve problem is definitely the most prevalent and most concerning condition in this breed, but it’s not the only concern.

Please note the disclaimer. Theseposts are about the breed from a veterinary viewpoint as seenin clinical practice, i.e. the problems we are faced with. It’s notthe be-all and end-all of the breed and is not to make a judgementabout whether the breed is right for you. If you are asking for anopinion about these animals in a veterinary setting, that is what youwill get. It’s not going to be all sunshine and cupcakes, and isnot intended as a personal insult against your favorite breed. Thisis general advice for what is common, often with a scientificconsensus but sometimes based on personal experiences, and is not aguarantee of what your animal is going to encounter in their life. 

Mitral Valve Dysplasia is extremely common in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. It occurs when one of the heart valves is leaky, allowing blood to flow backwards and each heart beat becomes inefficient. I could explain further, but Richard has already done so very well.

Mitral Valve Dysplasia does occur in other breeds, but it seems to occur much, much younger in CKCS and it seems like 80-90% of these dogs will develop this condition.

You might guess from those floppy, heavy, hairy and otherwise beautiful ears that the breed is prone to ear infections, and you’d be correct. they are not as notorious as the Cocker Spaniel, but they are prone to them.

They are also more prone than average to dental disease, and for some reason I see them particularly affected in the premolars. It’s worth noting that chronic dental disease can worsen heart valve disease over time, so it is definitely worth treating in these dogs, which are already vulnerable.

From a skeletal point of view, luxating patellas are the most common concern, where the kneecaps pop out of joint, and are relatively expensive to treat surgically. They do also get hip dysplasia and tear their cruciate ligaments, but the luxating patellas are more common.

Some of these dogs have particularly unfortunate eyes and are prone to exposure keratopathy if their eyes are particularly bulgy and stick out. This is more of a structural issue than a prevalent breed issue, but it’s worth noting.

Chiari-like Malformation and Syringomyelia have had a lot of attention since Pedigree Dogs Exposed, but I haven’t actually diagnosed a case. There’s not a huge number of dogs that end up in a CT scanner though, so maybe it is a case of not looking hard enough.

I do like these dogs, but I’m so paranoid about their heart health that I doubt I’ll ever keep one.

Totally. I originally had Pearl, Peridot, Garnet and Amethyst but now I have Pearl, Peridot, Ruby, Sapphire and Opal!
