so… still no tary huh. at this point my two theories are:
1) he will be in one episode as a fun side character
2) when shit hits the fan, scanlan will decline to rejoin them and taryon will help defeat vecna

Throwback Thursday (heh) to February 2022 when I discovered TLOVM and didn’t get the “Scanbo” Rambo reference, so I asked about it on a gifset - and had a really good introduction to how kind and welcoming the Critter community was 💜

Top 5 LoVM episodes?
*STARES* AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAh. YOU DID NOT GO THERE. *SHAKES*
The Darkness Within/ The Echo Tree (I WILL NOT CHOOSE BETWEEN THESE TWO. Perc'ahlia MY BEBES.)
2. The Sunken Tomb (EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS- LIAM'S CRYING, THE MUSIC, THE BEBE TWINS, THE ANIMATION OF VEX FALLING. JUST ROLL ME OVER)
3. Scanbo/ Test of Pride: Scanbo just has SO MUCH percy stuff and Perc'ahlia! Plus, SCANLAN? yeah, it's just a great episode. Test of Pride might surprise some people, but Grog's backstory punched me in the nose. Like I legit teared up.
4. Spark of Rebellion: I had to include this one because when Percy fell out of the window was when I really fell in love with him as a character. :) I don't know when it happened with Vex tbh. But that moment made such an impression on me it's like burned on my eyelids lol
5. Rise of the Chroma Conclave I'm sorry, but this first episode of s2 literally grabbed me by my shirt and did not let go. The music! The dragons! JUST !!!!! AH!
thank you! :)

Have you watched 'The Legend of Vox Machina'? It is animated DnD.
Some of my favorite things about the show: Gilmore, the dragons, the magic items, Scanlan's Hand, and randomly this sentence... 'I got arrowed a bunch, I had two voices in my throat, I stabbed a stupid tongue in the face!'
There is a character in season 2 called Garmelie, if tumbler was a person it would be Garmelie. Billy Boyd does a fine job on the voice acting, but they should have used David Tennant here. David Tennant voices a season 1 character, but it is a big burly blond guy and the voice seems wrong coming out of that face.
Scanlan is somehow my least favorite character (his personality is EW! 😒😒😒) and also my most favorite (he has jokes, funny insults, music😆😆😆). My favorite episode is season 1, episode 7... 'Scanbo'.
Check it out if you have not seen it, you would enjoy.
I hope you are Safe and Well and Happy!
You are always on my mind and in my heart!
I Love You!!! 💟💟💟
It sounds interesting!! I'll definitely add it to my watch list
I am safe and well. I hope you are safe and well and happy too. I love you! 💙💙💙

Episode 7: Scanbo
Make sure the lights are dim and you've got your popcorn, because you ain't seen a show until you've seen a single gnome burn down a duke's motherfucking house.
This episode was written by Sam and Travis. And I don't mean this in a bad way, but...you can totally tell.
The good:
Yay! Residuum! World building! I definitely could've done with a little more world building over seasons 1 and 2. So any little bit we get makes me happy.
Percy and Cass are adorable and absolutely heartbreaking here, given what's coming. Anders get's some good character set up here; you get the impression what he does to Cass wasn't the smartest thing to do (for multiple reasons) but he's shown to be so full of himself that it makes sense for him.
I do appreciate Vox Machina asking questions about the smoke. Unfortunately....Percy knows exactly jack shit.
I'm glad that was something they didn't change. That was such a point of suspense in the Campaign and here in the show. Because both the audience and the characters know there's something bad burbling under the surface. But there's no way for them to know enough to do anything about it. Not yet.
So...Scanbo.
When this episode premiered, I was surprised to see there was a fair amount of fans of the original stream (not a huge amount, but a fair amount) who felt like Scanlan's competence had been significantly nerfed.
Meanwhile, I'd been re-watching C1 in anticipation of the series. And I didn't feel that way at all.
On the one had, Scanlan has less magic here. No Stinking Cloud. No Dimension Door. So he has less options to work with.
On the other hand, in the stream Sam went in there without even knowing he had something to light a fire. To burn the house down. Which was the mission.
He also benefitted from Matt consistently rolling low. No less than three natural ones that night; two of which were Vedmire's.
Overall, I thought the show's version was a pretty good balance of ingenuity and plain old dumb luck. Plus, I love that they actually named it Scanbo.
(That scene with the guards playing a tabletop game was so good.)
The Bad (or at least not good)
This took me a few re-watches to catch but...in Percy's flashback, where's he getting the money to make his Pepperbox? We can infer he's stealing materials, but it isn't explicit.
To make it explicit, they could've shown him stealing or scavenging metal and parts. Then maybe sneaking into an abandoned smithy to do his work. This would've been a good opportunity to show how obsessed he was, even before the Briarwoods re-entered his life.
Because he was stealing metal. Not food. Or clothes. Or even money. His need to make this thing, and through it secure vengeance, was eclipsing everything he should've been prioritizing.
Moving along.
When Scanlan's making the case for his solo mission, you can see a lot of set up for a future event. And that's cool. But I think it might have been laid on a little too thick here.
If you have a character that's underappreciated or underestimated in universe, you have to be careful. If you're not, you can push it to a point where the audience can't help but ask themselves: "If they really think this person can't handle themself, why do they even bring them on such dangerous adventures?" It's easy to overbalance.
And if we're not there with Vox Machina's reaction to Scanlan's plan, we're perilously close.
That's episode 7 done. Curtain's closing, on to the next show.
