maroon | thomas x fem!reader
“the burgundy on my t-shirt when you splashed your wine into me”
during his first night in the glade, thomas (quite literally) bumps into a girl.
“and how the blood rushed into my cheeks, so scarlet, it was maroon”
as more time passes, thomas becomes closer with y/n (very close), but that changes after they escape the maze.
“the mark you saw on my collarbone, the rust that grew between telephones”
warnings: it’s bad, kissing, maze runner, swearing and whatever (i never know what to write here)
“the lips i used to call home, so scarlet, it was maroon”
“our med-jacks, clint and jeff.” newt introduced to the greenie as he showed the boy around. “and this is— woah, watch out.”
the greenie hadn’t been watching where he was going and bumped right into you as you walked past, spilling the drink he had been holding all over your shirt.
“oh, god, i am so…” he paused as he met your eyes. a girl? “sorry.”
you looked down at your soaking wet shirt and a few boys around snickered.
“thanks.” you smiled sarcastically and turned on your heel, heading towards the small hut that sat not far from the homestead.
“nice one, greenie.” newt clapped him on the back. “i think you just ruined her day.”
“who was that?” the boy asked, watching as you disappeared behind the door of the hut.
“y/n. she’s one of the runners.” newt answered. “also the glade’s only girl.”
“oh.”
inside you were changing your shirt, muttering in annoyance as you did so.
your favorite shirt (out of the five or so you owned) was now covered in gally’s foul-smelling drink thanks to that greenie.
after changing, you went outside to join the party again, only for it to be declared over moments after the greenie remembered his name.
thomas.
“uh, hey.” he jogged over to you as you walked back to your hut. “i’m, um, i’m sorry about before. is your shirt okay?”
“it’ll survive.” you shrugged. “i guess.”
“so, you’re a runner?” he asked, walking with you. “you go into the maze with that minho guy?”
“yep.” you glanced at him. “are you just going to follow me the whole way?”
“oh, sorry.” he slowed down. “um, i’ll go now.”
“okay.” you stared.
“see you around, y/n.”
you furrowed your eyebrows. “right. see you around…”
“thomas.”
“see you around, thomas.”
Tumblr media
while it may not have seemed like it, you and thomas became pretty close friends over the next week or so, and you felt dumb to admit that you even had feelings for him.
he was in the same boat. except thomas was head-over-heels in love with you.
you kissed once. when the glade was being attacked by grievers, he kissed you before the two of you split up.
so after your group escaped the maze, the two of you did your best to stick together.
the two of you sat on the floor of the room your group had been forced into after being ‘saved’.
your legs were stretched out to sit in his lap, and his hands sat on top of them.
the rest of the group was around, all full after eating more food than they’d ever seen in their lives.
you couldn’t focus on the conversation that was going on between teresa and the boys, because all you could focus on was how thomas’ fingers drew small shapes on the bare skin of your leg where your pants had rolled up a little.
you wanted to tell him how you felt. you wanted to kiss him again. but everyone else was around, and the thought of being in front of everyone made you uncomfortable.
you had no clue how thomas did his whole leader thing.
when the door to the room opened, everyone jumped up and ran over, eager to know exactly what was going on.
the man who had opened the door introduced himself as mr. janson and led your group through the compound.
thomas held your hand the whole time.
“first things first, let’s do something about that smell.”
the boys were being taken to a different room to you and teresa. just before your hand slipped from his, you kissed thomas on the cheek. simple enough.
Tumblr media
that night you properly kissed again and he asked you to be his girlfriend, and despite all of your worries, you said yes.
it wasn’t long after that when your group had to leave the compound with another boy, aris. you still hadn’t escaped wicked.
you stuck by thomas’ side the whole time, or until you were separated again.
you didn’t even know if he was alive, but jorge was confident he and brenda were fine.
it took a few days until you reached what jorge called marcus’ place.
you got into the party and the first thing you spotted was thomas and brenda.
kissing.
then they pulled apart, thomas said something and brenda wandered off.
thomas seemed to spin around the room until he yelled out and collapsed.
your heart was broken.
you were separated for just a few days, the longest since you had met, and he was kissing a girl he barely knew.
you couldn’t even say anything to him because he was out cold. instead you had to help minho drag him upstairs and act like nothing happened.
then, after he woke up, your group was on the run again, searching for the right arm.
in the car, thomas reached his hand over and tried to take yours in his, but you pulled yours back. you didn’t let him.
he looked at you. he was confused.
you didn’t answer his look. you just turned your head away from him and looked out the car window.
he had no clue why you were suddenly ignoring him. not the entire drive to the mountains, not when the were taken to the right arm camp, not when brenda collapsed.
it was only when he was in the tent with her later, just after brenda woke up, when it clicked to him why.
you had seen brenda kiss him.
everything seemed to click into place at that moment, and he jumped to his feet halfway through his conversation with brenda.
“you okay?” she asked.
“yeah. yeah, there’s just something i need to do.” thomas looked down at her. “i’m sorry, i’ll be back later.”
then he ran out of the tent.
the camp was large, and thomas had no clue where he could find you. or any of his friends for that matter.
it took about ten minutes of searching until he found you.
you were sitting alone on a rock, looking down at your feet and mumbling something to yourself.
“y/n?”
you looked up and thomas realized you had been crying.
“what?”
there was a twinge of bitterness in your voice, and thomas frowned. it reminded him of how you had spoken to him the night you met, when he had splashed his drink into you.
“you okay?”
“i’m fine.”
he knew you weren’t, and he ignored the obvious signs that you didn’t want him around when he sat down beside you.
“what do you want, thomas?” you asked.
without another word, he simply wrapped his arms around you and pulled you into his chest.
at first, you thought about trying to pull away. but you didn’t.
“why’d you kiss her? brenda?” you asked eventually. “do you like her better? because, you know, i’ll back off or whatev—”
“no, no, no, y/n.” he pulled back so he could look you in the eyes. “i could never like anyone better than i like you.”
“then why—?”
“she kissed me.” thomas told you, cupping your cheek with one hand. “we were drugged, okay? i…”
thomas winced slightly at the memory of brenda’s face after his words.
“i thought she was you.” he admitted. “whatever that marcus guy put in that drink had me seeing the weirdest shit.”
“are you calling me weird shit?” you teased and thomas’ eyes widened.
“what? no.” he shook his head. “that’s not what i meant.”
“i know. i was kidding.”
you grabbed his hand and interlocked your fingers.
“i’m sorry.” he apologized.
“don’t be. i get it now.” you shrugged.
“yeah, but i could’ve said something sooner.”
“when?” you asked. “when you were passed out? or when we were almost shot by mountain people?”
he chuckled. “okay, maybe not. but—”
“tommy, i get it. don’t worry.”
the feeling of freedom and happiness that evening was short lived, and soon became a nightmare.
teresa betrayed them, wicked burned the camp to the ground, and multiple people were taken.
sonya, aris, minho and you.
thomas had lost you. he had lost the battle. but he was determined to get you and minho and everyone else back.
he would do anything he could. he would do whatever it took to get you back.

🌎: world swap! give me a character/fandom and i will put them in a randomly generated fandom off my masterlist. you'll get a brief drabble describing what i think would happen in this crossover. ex) you send in percy jackson and i spin my wheel and get the grishaverse, you know that boy is becoming a tidemaker.
Hello Thomas tmr ;) please
thomas!!
i have randomly generated a world and thomas is getting a crossover with the grishaverse! honestly a slay for him
Tumblr media
Thomas was not meant to do this. He was an otkazat’sya from the moment of his birth, and so he would remain until the day he died. That’s what his mother told him, at least, and so she argued up to the last moment when Thomas was taken from his home. He can still hear her plaintive cries after the soldiers dragged him away.
Thomas, apparently, was made for something else. Something more than whatever had come before. Thomas is Grisha, like it or not, and even if he’s heard the other people of his village whispering that makes him a monster, there is nothing he can do about it but pray they are wrong.
They are not. Thomas kills a man by accident on the ride over to Os Alta. One twist of a hand was all it took, and blood was spurting out of the guy’s mouth in scarlet torrents. It was a knee-jerk response, the man was lunging towards their party with the crazed aura of someone driven mad by hate, and Thomas murdered him. The other Grisha escorting Thomas to the Little Palace tell him not to worry about it; these sorts of things happen all the time, people insane over the fact that Thomas happens to be different from them. It’s not something he should think about for too long.
He can’t help it, though, even after he’s given a red kefta and a promise that he’ll do it much more often. He can save Ravka, or so the General tells him. Thomas doesn’t like Janson all that much, though, no matter what promises he makes. This doesn’t feel like salvation, it feels like death.
He isn’t the only one to doubt the wicked kindness of the Second Army. Thomas makes allies in Os Alta– Minho, a brash Squaller, Alby, a brave Inferni, and Newt, a non-Grisha who sneaks them secrets from the city over the wall of the Little Palace gate. They leave under the cover of darkness within a month, them and some of the others who wanted a taste of freedom without Janson choking them out. It is dangerous. Not all of them make it. Still, Thomas looks up at the rising sun one morning their escape and thinks to himself, if he’s going to be a monster, at least he’ll be his own.
thank you for taking part in my 7k celebration!

"I never wanted this life for you." Jack trying to ask Janson for forgiveness. (I'm trying for fluff after a rough week, but I know this can go either way.)
“Everything was my fault, wasn’t it?” Janson couldn’t help but tense when he saw Jack’s rueful, bitter smile. “I let all of this happen. If I had just taken responsibility, if I had just...tried to figure out how my powers were meant to be used the first time instead of jumping the gun, none of this would’ve happened. You, at least...You could’ve been who you were meant to be from the start.”
So I’m not good enough as I am? Janson bit his tongue against the urge to say that, opting instead for, “Wh͏o ͏w̨a͏ş I͜ ͜meąn̛t ͡t̵o ̵be̸?”
“Heh...Jackieboy Man.” Jack wheezed a little as he laughed, leaning back into his pillows. “Kind of a stupid name, right? But...Jackie...you were going to be the one. You were gonna be a superhero, save us all from the big bad guy. You probably still can, but it’ll be harder now. You’re Janson, not Jackie. I guess it’s like what artists say: sometimes the picture just doesn’t turn out the way you see it in your head. But that’s my fault for not using the right materials and giving all of you the life you deserved.”

A Wedding
The air felt happy. There was not one lick of sadness in it, for this was a joyous day. It was a day for celebration, a celebration of love. Today showed that love had no bounds; that it was worth whatever pain it brought, no matter what.
It was a wedding. A wedding being two women who loved each other beyond reason. Some thought they shouldn’t be together. But despite those who challenged these two women and the stressor their jobs, they pushed forward.
The names of them? Charley and Scarlet. Both were to have the last name “Janson”. Charley was a nurse at Rosewood Hospital. Scarlet was a cop, but had been in the military previously before leaving respectfully.
Their foster son, Lucas Anderson, was the flower boy. He wore a flower crown that matched the colors of his dress and sat atop his pastel purple hair. His dress was a darker green, and it went to a pretty navy, or maybe true blue.
His boyfriend was there as well. Asher Haywood sat in the front, his hands folded in his lap. He didn’t know Charley and Scarlet that well, but he still wanted to show up to their wedding. He wore a purple suit with a blue and magenta tie, a pink rose tucked into his pocket.
Charley stood at the altar, her hands clasping in front of her. She and Scarlet had argued over who would be at the front, and she won the argument. They both wore a suit with the same color scheme; oranges and purples.
Behind Scarlet as she walked was a friend of hers carrying two sheathed swords. On the leather scabbards, S&C <3 was embroidered on each. While similar in material , both of the scabbards had their own unique designs.
Lucas watched as the two came together. He stood on Charley’s side, holding the mostly empty basket in front of him. He smiled, tilting his head as he watched them smile.
Lucas had forgotten about beautiful things such as this. He hadn’t realized how devoid his life had been without them.
Joy wasn’t so strange to him nowadays. Sure, it had only been eight months, but it felt like seconds in a strange way. He felt so happy compared to before, and he still felt more free then he ever had.
He wiped a tear away from his face. This is what he always hoped for. A life like this. He had everything right here, where he would need it. A family, a boyfriend, and the freedom to wear what he wanted.
“And as we stand here, this lovely couple will be united.”
And at last, the two handed each other their swords. Charley had Scarlet’s custom made, and it was the same vice versa. The two slowly unsheathed their swords before turning their heads towards the crowd and pointing them upward.
And then, they kissed as their guests clapped, the sun shining over them.
The end.

SCARLET BACKED FLOWERPECKER (male) Dicaeum cruentatum © Choy Wai Mun top © Doug Janson  - bottom
This is a tiny bird about the length of a business card, 9 cm (3.5 in) and weighing 7 to 8 grams (0.25 to 0.28 oz). Sexually dimorphic, the male has navy blue upper parts with a bright red streak down its back from its crown to its tail coverts, while the female and juvenile are predominantly olive green. It is found in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and occasionally gardens in a number of countries throughout South and East Asia. “Cruentatum” in its Latn name translates to bloodstained for the bright red color which runs down the male’s back and along the hind end of the female. Called a flowerpecker but is primarily a frugivore.

SYNOPSIS
The X-men are attacked by a strange entity that makes them feel despair and end up going to Ethiopia to help people against the famine (and fighting this entity after a while).
OFFICIAL CONTEXT
Tumblr media
CONTEXT BY CHRISTOPHER PRIEST
The most heated racial episode in my career occurred during Marvel's production of their charity book for Ethiopian famine victims. Promoted as work from "the top writers and artists in the industry-- the very best of the very best," profits from this effort were going to be donated to help the poor starving Africans. It was a truly noble effort, one the entire industry rallied behind (at least until DC decided to do their own book, thus dividing the talent pool along company lines). Denys Cowan dropped by and mentioned, amused, that he'd seen the list of talent working on the famine relief project. There wasn't a single African American creator invited to participate. This actually amused me tremendously, and I went over the list myself to make sure, but, yup, no blacks had been thought of as, "the very best of the very best," and none were invited to work on this book.
Tumblr media
Tickled, I picked up the phone and called Larry Hama, telling him no blacks were on the list. Larry was hugely amused, and suggested we do our own charity relief book for the poor white trash of Appalachia. He and I howled with laughter, and then shook off the dumbness of it all and got on with our lives.
Only, a white staffer had overheard part of the conversation (I assume the notion of my "recruiting" Hama to do my "own alternate charity book"), and some warped interpretation of my conversation with Hama got reported down the hall to the X-MEN office (where the book was being developed). The editors became incensed and loudly demanded my head on a plate for, essentially, inciting the black talent to stop working for Marvel. I mean, this thing got blown to huge proportions, so much so that, by the end of the day, it was largely accepted as fact that I was organizing a walkout of black talent, and the EIC kind of put me and the X-Men editor in a room to negotiate a deal.
I just couldn't stop laughing. I mean, it was all so stupid. These were stupid people. It was extremely stupid to do an African relief charity project and not invite any damned Africans to work on it. It was even sillier for these stupid people to invent some massive protest out of a silly joke in a 30-second phone call with Larry Hama.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The X-Men Ed was not amused, and refused to believe me when I said I had no intention of bad-mouthing the project. I was invited to participate, but I just chuckled and said, "No affirmative action, please." And this just set the Ed off into a screaming match that could be heard everywhere in the office, "What is WRONG with you? Why do you have to make a RACIAL ISSUE OUT OF EVERYTHING?!?!?!"
It just got out of control, and the episode (along with my paying my assistant to stay home on MLK's birthday once it was ratified as a national holiday but Marvel refused to recognize it, other than the numbingly patronizing "We got us our own holiday" speech by Luke Cage in the VISION & SCARLET WITCH Miniseries) fairly cemented my pariah status at Marvel. Without saying a word and without actually doing anything, I was routinely assumed to be some radical activist who saw everything as a race issue.
I felt trapped in a world of loons. It was totally no-win, and I tended to simply withdraw from the office more and more, from people who, in my view, had now invented a justification to do what they'd been doing all along: fencing themselves off from me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CONTEXT BY JIM SHOOTER
Pam had arranged for Oxfam America to receive our donation. Their reaction to our offer, at first, was what one might expect from people who had never seen a comic book up close: “Comic book? There’s nothing funny about famine!” Sigh.
For some reason Pam was determined that we should donate the money to them, though, and we convinced them that comics weren’t always comic. They still demanded to review the finished book before they would commit to accept our donation.
When the book was ready to go to press, we sent a mock-up to Oxfam America to review.
Their response was that they wanted nothing to do with it. Flat rejection.
Furthermore, they said that the book was unbelievably offensive and that we, the people of Marvel Comics, were racist, sexist and reprehensible.
When this was told to me by Pam and Marvel President Jim Galton I felt as if I were being called on the carpet. I was flabbergasted. I showed them the mock-up.
They didn’t see anything wrong with it.
Tumblr media
Galton called the exec at Oxfam America we’d been dealing with to ask what their specific objections were.
Their response was that, while under no circumstances would they have anything to do with our project or with us, they would send an executive to meet with us and explain the many horrific, repugnant, disgusting elements that made our “comic book” anathema.
So they did. Oxfam America’s representative came to meet with Galton and me. The meeting took place in Galton’s office.
I do not remember the man’s name.
He was a nice-looking, thirty-something man. He had on a suit that probably cost more than my entire wardrobe. Designer shoes. He had on more gold and diamond jewelry than I’d ever seen on a human being. Jeweled watch. Cufflinks. Stickpin. Bracelets. A neck chain that would make a rapper blush.  Doubt me, go ahead. Discount by two-thirds what I’m telling you and you should still have an image of a guy wearing clothes and jewelry that at market price would feed a thousand starving people for a month.
After the greetings and handshaking, Galton, making conversation, said that he imagined that Oxfam America and other charitable organizations had, at least, gotten a lot of people to focus on the ongoing tragedy in Africa, and had inspired many efforts such as ours from musicians and performers and artists.
Tumblr media
This Oxfam America fellow, let’s call him Midas, just plain gushed about how good for business the East African famine was, how donations were rolling in at record levels. He talked about the millions dying as if it were a great marketing opportunity.
Galton and I were stupefied. We couldn’t believe how thrilled Midas was that his business was booming.
Midas explained that the purpose of his visit wasn’t here to request changes or negotiate. He had come to save us from our own folly. He made it clear that Oxfam America had nothing but contempt for us and our work. He came as a favor, to urge us not to publish the abomination that we had created. He assured us that it would destroy Marvel Comics.
Right. Well, naturally, I wondered why.
Midas flipped through the mock-up. Again and again he pointed out black characters that he said “looked like Michael Jackson.” We were obviously trying to capitalize on Michael Jackson’s image and fame.
Michael Jackson in particular and the Jackson family in general were huge supporters of Oxfam America, by the way. Every drawing of a woman, he said, was sexist and exploitative. He was particularly offended by depictions of Storm, which he thought were more than sexist, a denigration of women of color.
I mentioned that the men were heroic and glamorous, too. Just like in the movies, stars tend to be good looking.
He pointed out a panel in which Chris had a carnival barker saying: “Yowza….” That, he said, was racist in the extreme. I don’t have the book handy, as explained above, but wasn’t that character Caucasian?
Moore and Corben’s pages? Yikes.
Tumblr media
I cannot begin to tell you all the racism, sexism and hate that he (and Oxfam America) read into the words and pictures.
Wow.
The punch line is this: Midas accused Marvel of “stealing Janet Jackson’s logo.” He believed that the Heroes for Hope logo, credited to Janet Jackson, was ripped off.
I offered to introduce him to the designer on our staff who had created the logo, one Miss Janet Claire Jackson. He dismissed my obvious attempt at a cover-up.
No, really, we have a designer named…. Oh, never mind.
No wonder Janet Claire Jackson eventually started going by the name “Blog Elf.”
Finally, the lunatic left. Galton and I shared a moment of “what a jerk.”
Tumblr media
Pam was instructed to find some other organization to which to donate the money. She came up with the American Friends Service Committee.
Heroes for Hope was a huge success. Thanks to our sales department, we got donations from downstream—distributors, retailers, even fans.
Can’t find the press release and the picture of me and Galton giving the AFSC honchos the PR “Big Check” created by our production department to symbolize the real check. I think the initial donation was $500,000. Much more came later.
Tumblr media
It was a great thing. Jim Starlin, Bernie Wrightson, Ann Nocenti and Chris Claremont are great heroes in my book. Heroes for hope. There are people alive today who wouldn’t be without their efforts.
Tumblr media
AND ABOUT THOSE STEPHEN KING PAGES
The non-comics writers who participated needed some help in most cases, which Ann and Chris provided. The biggest challenge was Stephen King’s contribution. I may be exaggerating here, but not by much—he gave us something like 5,000 words for three pages. Almost overnight, by the way.  Chris, Ann and I somehow cut that down to what would fit on three comics pages. 500 words? I forget.  Has anyone else ever had to cut out 90% of Stephen King’s brilliant words?

REVIEW
This was bound to not be a nice comic-book to review. The famine in Ethiopia at the moment had political origins that people decided to look over in favor of Live Aid and We Are The World.
Let’s just say that sending super-heroes there to help doesn’t guarantee a success (although they could have done something more against politicians, but let’s not go there).
The story is a bit abstract and the characters pretty much end up making sense of it without ever checking their facts (like the entity being a mutant and why it exists). The sequences about each X-man being tortured psychologically was too repetitive. By the time they end up in Africa (something that happens on a wild guess), the book is almost over.
The art doesn’t have a nice unifying feel. Something that could have been possible with breakdowns and less inkers and colorists.
But you know what? I understand why it had to be like that. This book was made ad honorem, and people did a great effort to just put the damn thing on the stands.
My other concern is that the X-men weren’t the right fit for a story like this. I understand they were popular back then, but these comics should attract non-readers as well (it’s for a good cause after all). And to be frank, things like Rachel Summers, Storm not having powers, Magneto being the leader... those are things of that time. Very hard to relate to. The Avengers would have been a better choice, or even Spider-man and the Fantastic Four (even if Spidey was looking a bit different at the time).
I like the message of not losing hope, and hope being the one thing keeping people alive in such tragedies... but then they kind of go back home. Leaving hope?
I don’t think the ideas in the book were brought down on something concrete or to keep thinking on. It is just confusing.

I give the book a score of 5

Hulk! Magazine (1978), #18
Writer: Moench, Artist: Sienkiewicz and Janson, Coloring: Oliff
We pick up where we left off. Moon Knight telling cops to cut the shit and get an ambulance for Marlene. He's not above tracking them down if she dies. (It's very cool how well Moon Knight knows Central Park. Lockley knowledge?). Randall starts indiscriminately killing and takes a hostage.

Randall's choice of words "starched white sweet run red" make me think of Elias' (future) funeral in Moon Knight #37. "Come now, and let us reason together, Saith the L-rd; Though your sins be as scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they be red like crimson, They shall be as wool."
Despite Randall killing 11 women and trying to kill 2 more, Marc can't kill his brother. Not deliberately. At this point.

Hatchet Man killing "an innocent man named Randall Spector" is ... interesting, to say the least. Rand has always been jealous of Marc. He's a sore loser. Double-crossed the group him and Marc were in for more money. Killed Marc's girlfriend at the time. His killings are all related to Marc killing him with a grenade. Marc could've reached out but didn't. Which fits, considering Marc's self-hatred, grief, and fury. Blames himself for both Lisa and Randall. Better to dive into mercenary work. Then, Moon Knight. He's always looking to escape and make up for his past.
I leave you with a shirtless, bandaged Moon Knight at Marlene's bedside, telling the cops to fuck off until morning. Marlene makes it through.
