Holy Schlitz! Steely Dan Made a Beer Commercial
- Long-lost “Schlitz Jingle” resurfaces after 50 years
The real countdown to ecstasy might be the time between the work bell ringing and the popping of the day’s first beer.
So it went that Steely Dan in 1973 recorded a never-used jingle for Schlitz beer. Just surfaced on YouTube, the aborted advert features a Spanish-speaking man talking about enjoying a cold one at the end of a long day as the band plays a jazzy, calypso-leaning melody.
The premise is you only live once, so your beer oughta be high-quality. And this leads to some of Donald Fagen’s most-awkward lyrics:
Once around life, once around living/once around beer and keep around Schlitz/come along and take the best of life’s givings/once around beer and you’ll keep around Schlitz/when you’re out of Schlitz/you’re out of beer, he sings.
And Schlitz out of luck.
