De zegen en vloek van Magister

De een-op-een gesprekken die ik geregeld met mijn leerlingen inplan beschouw ik als erg waardevol. Zowel voor de leerling in kwestie als voor mezelf, als docent en mentor. Dat komt ten eerste doordat de leerling voor even de groepsdruk mag loslaten die in elke klas zichtbaar en onzichtbaar aanwezig is. Hierdoor mogen eventuele maskers vallen en potentieel aanwezige muurtjes worden afgebroken. Uitspraken, meningen en persoonlijke problemen worden niet veroordeeld, niemand wordt uitgelachen en gemaakte afspraken worden niet ongewenst gedeeld. De leerling aanhoren en laten uitpraten is hierbij van groot belang. Tips geven, meedenken en oplossingen zoeken volgen daarna op gepaste afstand.

Ten tweede komen leerlingen vaak onbewust met ideeën en visies die van belang kunnen zijn voor het verbeteren van het persoonlijke onderwijs(leer)proces. Dit kunnen tips zijn die bijvoorbeeld betrekking hebben op het aanleren van zogenaamde executieve functies, zoals het plannen van huiswerk, het stimuleren van de taakgerichtheid of het maken van samenvattingen. Maar soms zijn ze meer overkoepelend van aard. Zoals onlangs het verzoek van Mirco. Na een gesprek over persoonlijke kwaliteiten, planningen maken en het afgelopen seizoen van De Slimste Mens, had hij nog een vraag: “Is het misschien mogelijk dat docenten tijdens toetsweken géén cijfers op Magister zetten?”

Er is een regel die zegt dat docenten binnen tien werkdagen de cijfers van een toets, of andersoortig werk dat voor een cijfer is gemaakt, moeten verwerken in Magister. Zodra het ingevoerde cijfer gevolgd wordt door een druk op de enter-knop, kunnen de leerling het behaalde cijfer meteen zien. Dit kan in de middag plaatsvinden, in het weekend, maar ook mogelijk ‘s avonds, want dat is immers het ‘gemak’ van het internet. Het zien van het cijfer kan vervolgens voor de leerlingen een verlossing, een zegen of een vloek zijn. Ongeacht het tijdstip wanneer dat cijfer in de app bekeken wordt. Valt dit cijfer mee of is het misschien zelfs boven verwachting goed, dan kan de euforie hierover zorgen voor een stimulans tijdens de resterende dagen van de toetsweek. Valt het cijfer tegen en volgen er zelfs misschien nog wel meer resultaten die minder opbeurend zijn, dan kan dat de motivatie neersabelen en onherroepelijk zorgen voor meer prestatiedruk, stress en negatieve spiralen.

Maar dat is niet het enige. Ouders hebben ook toegang tot deze schoolapp, waarin niet alleen de cijfers op elk moment van de dag zichtbaar zijn, maar ook de verzuimmomenten en lesnotities. Ook dát kan stress opleveren, waardoor een kind bij bepaalde online meldingen ander gedrag kan gaan vertonen op school en tijdens de les. Denk hierbij bijvoorbeeld aan lesverstoringen, minder concentratie en naar huis willen (bellen). Het Jordan Montessori Lyceum in Zeist zorgde onlangs voor een primeur in Nederland door het uitvoeren van een proef, waarbij ouders drie maanden geen cijfers meer konden zien in de Magister-app. Dit om de beschreven prestatiedruk voor de leerlingen te verminderen.

Er zijn veel mensen die klagen over de huidige zogenaamde pampergeneratie. Hiermee worden de jongeren van nu bedoeld die het aan niets ontbreekt en die voordat ze vallen al zijn opgevangen. Volgens deze klagende mensen wordt overal gezocht naar manieren om ze te vertroetelen en te beschermen tegen de gevaarlijke buitenwereld. Deze jongeren van nu kunnen daardoor niet meer tegen een stootje en zijn daardoor, volgens deze criticasters, niet opgewassen tegen de echte wereld. Mensen die daarover zeuren zijn meestal opgegroeid in de pre-digitale tijd en hebben daardoor waarschijnlijk zelf nooit te maken gehad met het leven van twee parallelle levens: de vluchtige digitale wereld die het ons zo makkelijk zou gaan maken en de tastbare buitenwereld die ondertussen meer en meer tot verharding leidt. Onbegrip hiervoor zou omgezet kunnen worden in inleving. Naar elkaar luisteren, bijvoorbeeld tijdens een een-op-een gesprek, zou dan zomaar kunnen leiden tot wederzijds begrip én mogelijke oplossingen.
