Write a short film

This means you have to bring them to you. And so making your own movies is an essential step. To make your own film, first you need a script. You can write your own screenplay. This is the best option to start. For every director looking for material, there are 10 scripts with 10 writers, each just waiting for someone to make them. If you are going to write the script yourself, the best option is to use screenwriting software such as in Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

Direct a short film

The qualifications required to become a film director are less about formal credentials, and more about practical experience. There are many directors who have no formal education. So, what exactly does it take to become a film director? You have to prove that you can direct before someone hires you to direct. Start small — use your phone and a few friends and build something like the Mumblecore crew did. Focus on the basics and then, after a few "no budget presentations", you can expand the parameters. Film school is a great option for some people. The benefits of getting formal education are obvious but there are also disadvantages.
