Objective #6 is done, and it is once again time to cry over the Schumanns.
Did two artistic souls really adore each other so much that they were able to build a committed relationship with each other without letting pride and artistic differences get in the way? Did they really face the same communication issues and need the same reassurances from each other that people continue to face and to need two hundred years later?
We all know how this story ends. But Lord, I'd be quite content with an early death if I had such a love as this, even for a short time.

I love how there are so many different versions about where and how Ralf and Florian met and nobody knows how it really went down.
Wikipedia says they met while studying at Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf.
But in this interview, Ralf says they didn’t study there at all and met at a seminar for improvisatory music at the conservatory.
In “Man Machine and Music” by Pascal Bussy, it says Ralf and Florian met while studying at the conservatory.
And in “Kraftwerk: Publikation” it says that Ralf and Florian met at a Jazz Academy in Remscheid while Ralf was studying architecture in Aachen.

“I feel like I’m trying to explain the relationship between Mozart and Salieri here” - lmfao I fucking LOVE someone condescending to me about Mozart and Salieri of all things. Thankfully, I am an adult with critical thinking who knows Amadeus wasn’t fucking real.
And since you, @president--felix-mendelssohn, were condescending to me, I’ll do it back. I have a MASTERS degree in music. My undergrad capstone recital contained only songs by female composers, including Fanny, performed with extensive program notes and research on all the composers I sang. My graduate music history seminar was on German Lieder, something both Felix and Fanny are considered major figures in. I think I know a bit more about the subject than you do - although I do respect that you obviously have studied up on the Mendelssohns, and I do think your artwork of them is cool. Lord knows my artistic abilities are in music only and not at all in the visual arts. And I very much appreciate that despite not studying it in school, you have an active interest in classical music. We really need more people like that.
Anyway, I never said they weren’t close. I am very aware he was very close to her, my apologies for not stating every single fact in an off-the-cuff post about how people shouldn’t worship him.
However, the fact is, Felix Mendelssohn published her music as his own and actually said he didn’t think she SHOULD publish her music. Yes he admitted to it being hers when asked—though I can only find proof of him doing so when Queen Victoria herself asked—but the fact of the matter is we STILL don’t know if all the music contributed to him is all his! Whether it was with her consent or not, he still took credit and made money off of her work. Of course, the biggest asshole was her father, but Felix sure as fuck didn’t encourage her to publish her music as her own. From Naxos (bolding my own):
On her twenty-third birthday, her father Abraham instructed her to ‘become more steady and collected, and prepare more earnestly and eagerly for your real calling, the only calling of a young woman—I mean the state of a housewife’. Even her beloved brother Felix, with whom she had an intensely close relationship, was ambivalent towards her musical aspirations. Although supportive of her work, even passing off some of her compositions as his own, he always discouraged her from publishing under her own name.
Also, I’m not sure what you mean about how the only way to publish her own music was by Felix doing it. Clara Schumann was published as early as 1831, at the age of 12. Fanny didn’t publish her own until 1846. You're trying to tell me that a fully adult Fanny couldn’t do the same without her brother Felix doing it for her? I’m sure you could argue that Clara had the advantage of her very respected stage father and the fact she was already well known as a piano prodigy, but how come Felix could publish Fanny’s works for her and couldn’t get it under her own name in the same vein as Clara’s father?
And that final comment is of course what I was getting at. The post in question was the off-the-cuff response to people saying “go support Mendelssohn” after somehow just learning now, in the year 2021, that Wagner was a raging antisemite. Wagner, of course, was a horrible human being on every level, something I acknowledge readily—and something I grapple with a lot as someone with a voice suited for Wagner—and did much more harm than Mendelssohn’s sexism ever did—I mean, Wagner even did his best to harm Mendelssohn’s career by himself. But there’s this idea that we should avoid performing/teaching any composer’s music because of their awfulness, but if we only studied/performed composers who weren’t racist/xenophobic/antisemitic/sexist/problematic on some level, we’d never perform music of anyone ever. Well, maybe Hildegard von Bingen, but we simply must all stan Hildie
I don’t mind if people listen to Mendelssohn or not. I don’t mind if people love him enough to draw him or talk about kissing him or whatever you like to do. But I find it weird that you’re saying we shouldn’t “worship” a composer and should recognize they were flawed while also trying to whitewash your obvious fave’s history.
And, again, I found your comment very condescending, especially as someone who has studied this and has taken tests and written papers and program notes and such at a collegiate level since before you were technically old enough to have a tumblr account.

Gestaltnetz - wie soll es wachsen?
Tumblr media

the worst generation ever by a considerable margin
My recent article - WHY ARE WE PRODUCING SO MANY INCOMPETENT YOUNG PEOPLE? – attracted a response and in some cases a strident response from readers, and in particular, millennial readers.
While I was clearly right, I was happy to read the objections and counter arguments. I stand by all that I said. That said, I want to make it very clear that I at no point suggested that all millennials are incompetent, and at no point suggested that those who are incompetent are personally responsible.
Indeed, they are not responsible. Millennials are not at all responsible for the incompetence that many of their number exhibit.
At a seminar I attended two years ago, prominent social psychologist Hugh McKay announces that his address that evening was entitled – ‘The Problem with the Y Generation’. The crowd moaned audibly, to which Mc Kay responded – ‘Well you made them!’
While members of the Y generation are not millennials they are often grouped together and McKay’s comment is equally true of for both groups. Whatever else the Y generation and/or millennials are the product of the parenting provided by baby boomers.
Millennials are the product of an upbringing provided by baby boomers who ‘mothered’ and over-protected them and failed to do the had things that would mean they learnt the critical skills needed to avoid incompetence. To the extent that millennials are incompetent it is the fault of we complainants, not the millennials. The millennials are the victims.
I was listening to an interview with Shane Howard (previously of Goanna Band) and John Schumann (previously of Redgum) on Radio National this Morning about their upcoming album addressing, among things the parlous state on the planet (both environmentally and socially) – laying the blame firmly at the feet of the baby boomers.
They are right!
In the famous monologue from the first episode of The Newsroom, from HBO, the lead character played by Jeff Daniels describes millennials as the ‘worst – period – generation – period – ever – period’.
He was wrong!
The baby boomers are almost certainly the worst generation ever.
Most of us have grown up in comparative privilege, eventually owning our own home. We are at the same time not prepared to take the action necessary (such as killing capital gains tax breaks, or a higher tax rate) to ensure our children can own their own homes.
We have introduced to Australia the sense of entitlement that now pervades our community. People talk about being entitled to take only the job they want, to receive the pension no matter their wealth, and have access to a high-quality health system while continually complaining how it should be better. This all started with baby boomers, not the Y generation.
We were the parents who gave our kids everything and avoided doing the hard things our parents did to give us the skills we needed to live with competence. We were the ones who accepted ignorantly the proposition that any can or should expect to be happy all of the time. We took the easy path, giving our children everything they asked for rather than having the strength to say no.
We are the generation who have known all about climate change but remains willing to leave all of the problems associated with climate change to impact on the lives of our children and grandchildren Worse still some deniers of climate change are not even willing to take out some insurance – just in case. We will do anything to avoid a carbon tax, even if it makes life uncomfortable for our children.
What is worse, as Howard and Schumann point out in their music, we the protest generation in the 60s and 70s have forgotten to importance of taking a stand on important issues, electing instead to make cynical comments about politicians suggesting that they are ‘all as bad as each other’. That is so much easier than doing something.
We are the richest, healthiest, best educated and most informed generation ever, and what have we done with these benefits of a free education, free health care, and economic growth (most of us did nothing to drive)? Two thirds of bugger all. Research suggests that our children will not live as long as we will, will endure a damaged environment and will almost certainly enjoy a lower standard of living.
We are arguably the first generation to leave the planet and society worse than we found it.
Am I wrong?
We still have time to fix it, but will we?
Will you help to fix it?

Also, as will be seen within the photo, the lower finish of the decking now acts as an additional seating area, simply off the patio, that in a scorching summers day provides drastically appreciated shading. TIP! Re-edge any flowers and rock beds in your backyard to freshen it up. A curved edge appears to be like fashionable, smooth and beautiful, and can really enhance your design. Club homeowners looking to install water-based mostly commercial synthetic grass are, nonetheless, warned that, on account of having no infill, this sort of turf requires far more frequent wetting than other equivalent sorts. The level of watering wanted is nowhere even near what pure grass would require, however sports activities pitch house owners opting to go along with any such turf ought to nonetheless bear in mind. Another profit to push reel mowers is that you simply drastically lower the greenhouse gasses you emit into the ambiance with a lawnmower. The EPA states that lawnmowers are significantly dangerous for the atmosphere as a result of their engines are unregulated, in contrast to cars. A median lawnmower spews 90 kilos of CO2, and 50 kilos of other pollutants, into the environment every year. Push reel mowers don't emit any. I've already killed off some of the flowers we planted this spring :( so I'm undoubtedly looking for some hardy replacements :) Thanks for this perfectly-timed hub! Voted up and pinned!! I feel that my matter about pain control was also an enormous stir as I really feel many individuals imagine nursing care is black and white with defined guidelines and universal care from one nurse to the following. When in actual fact, it's quite personalised and varies from one nurse to a different and is part of what makes nursing distinctive and even controversial at times. You want the limestone level excessive sufficient so the highest of the paving stone will sit even or slightly higher than the border stones. After getting smoothed the limestone into the proper top, merely place the paving stones within the desired pattern. For the Tuscany paving stones I used for my patio, the pattern is simple. Just lay the pavers end to end in a straight line, alternating totally different stone lengths. Continue these steps till the patio space is totally filled. Last to-do list of January!
So here's what I learned yesterday. I cannot, under any circumstances, abstain from taking notes in my notebook when I read these readings.
Which means I'm going to need more notebooks. Sigh.
Schumann Seminar
1. Schwartz reading. (Pretty straightforward.)
2. Hallmark reading. (I greatly enjoyed this reading, actually.)
3. Ferris reading. (From a book on the Eichendorff Liederkreis.)
4. Study some assigned poems by Chamisso and Eichendorff. (Our professor was very insistent that we should NOT listen to Schumann's settings yet.)
Baroque History
5. Hill reading. (Okay, so the reading was short, but taking notes took forever.)
6. Strunk reading. (Taking notes wasn't so long.)
7. Bianconi reading. (I'm going to have to figure out a shorthand system.)
8. Score study. (I even found recordings for some of the assignments!)
9. Consider a topic for the final paper. (Found two potential leads!)
Piano Practice
10. Choral rep. (Good thing I got some good practice in over the weekend!)
No adulting on the list because I already did my adulting over the weekend!

Can I just say how much I hate sending assignments in literally one minute before the deadline? This is the second time this semester this has happened. I mean, I did get the stuff for my presentation done like twenty minutes before the deadline, but that's not ONE minute.
Objective #1 is done.

Objective #2 did in fact get done in time. We're making progress -- I finished about twenty minutes before class! (That last bit is dripping with sarcasm, just so we're all clear.)
Objective #5 did not get done before class. It's done now -- I just need to go deliver it.

Last one before the semester ends.
And then I get to do it all over again this summer.
Schumann Seminar
1. Final paper. (HHHNNNGH)
2. Create a presentation. (And once again, another close call.)
Baroque History
3. Final exam. (It's about dang time.)
Piano Practice
4. Choral rep. (Got my freebie!)
Adulting
5. Write a thank-you note for my professor. (Now I just need to deliver it.)
6. Laundry. (YAY I HAVE CLEAN CLOTHES AGAIN)
7. Grocery order. (I got snacks for a Netflix marathon.)
8. Get a Metro pass for next month. (Pass acquired.)
9. Figure out that summer class. (Still don't know the section, but I figured out all the rest.)
10. Write a rent check. (My landlady/roommate is back for a couple weeks, so I wanted to make sure it got to her so I didn't have to mail it.)
11. Schedule a haircut. (So this is how I'm celebrating the end of my finals -- with a haircut.)
12. Send my brother's birthday card/gift. (Apparently I'm actually keeping it for when he comes to visit me!)
At least there are no other readings on the list.

The entirety of the Schumann section of the to-do list literally got done this morning. Like I got up at 7:30, turned my bibliography and thesis in about two and a half hours later, and skimmed the readings right before class.
Tumblr media
You know what got turned in this afternoon literally three minutes before Baroque class started? The freaking final paper.
Did anything else for that class get done? Nope. Thankfully I didn't need any of it for the lecture.
Now. I'm giving myself a week to prepare my final Schumann paper (the paper is due on May 4 but it will help me tremendously if I can base the May 1 presentation off my paper) and the same amount of time to hopefully go ahead and turn in my final exam for the Baroque class (which, God help me, is another 4-7 page paper due May 3). I'm going to take this lesson, apply it, and NOT TURN CRAP IN THREE MINUTES BEFORE THE DEADLINE.
Gosh. I looked at the Baroque paper I turned in again and noticed so many terms I forgot to italicize. I just know I'm going to get a comment about that and I'm just going to be like I KNOW, OKAY. I KNOW. Also I messed up at least one of my footnotes and I'm mad about it.
But at least I got the darn thing turned in on time.

Your girl apparently still hasn't learned a very valuable lesson.
And she's going to pay for it this week.
Schumann Seminar
1. Bibliography. (Your girl cobbled together some sources in about two hours.)
2. Thesis statement. (I also cobbled together a thesis statement in about half an hour. It's already been graded.)
3. Weaver reading. (Skimmed it right before class.)
4. Another Weaver reading. (Tried to read it last night and fell asleep, so I skimmed it while I ate lunch.)
Baroque History
5. Paper. (I don't want to talk about it.)
6. Hill reading. (Listen, we're going to be very fortunate if this gets done.)
7. Strunk reading. (See above.)
8. Score study. (Need I say it again?)
9. Listening. (And of course it's a full cantata, too. Fun stuff, folks.)
Piano Practice
10. Choral rep. (It's always helpful to give myself a freebie.)
Adulting
11. Send in work availability. (Still kind of salty they gave us three days to send this in.)
12. Laundry. (I'm putting it on here just in case, but I'm not sure this is getting done, either.)
Like I said, I don't want to talk about it.
