Does a USB drive get heavier as you store more files on it?
Nope. Paradoxically (and theoretically), the more you save on a flash drive, the lighter it gets.
USB drives use Flash memory, which means the the ones and zeros of the data are stored on transistors.
When you save data, a binary zero is set by charging the float gate of the transistor, and a binary one is set by removing the charge.
To charge it, we add electrons, and the mass of each electron is 0.00000000000000000000000000091 grams.
This means that an empty USB drive (which mostly holds zeros) weighs more than a full USB drive (which has ones and zeros). Add data, reduce the weight.

Hear me out: G’Kar might actually be the personification (narnificarion?) of the scientific method
Observation/Question: Is Babylon 5 worth it as the last, best hope for peace when the first four stations met dubious ends?
Research Topic Area: Interact with other species on the station (ignore the presence of blatant personal biases).
Hypothesis: If the Centauri ambassador is an asshole, then G’Kar and the hateful stereotypes he harbors are right about everything.
Test/Experiment: Go to the Centauri homeworld. Notice that Londo is slightly less of an asshole than the society in which he was reared wants him to be (in a niche way).
Analyze Data: Londo is even more ostracized by his own people than G’Kar ever could be. Still, Londo sometimes tries to not be an arse, and that’s commendable– even if G’Kar wishes it weren’t (solely because it’s Londo).
Report Conclusion(s): Pity Londo while being a dick back to him, write a tell-all diary which is immediately transformed into a holy work. Wait approximately two decades and kill him as he sits on his throne.
#who are queue? what do queue want?#for once it’s not an incorrect quote#babylon 5#b5#g’kar#the scientific method#source: @therighthandofvengeance#this is probably applicable to lots of characters#it just stuck out to me most with him#it’s barely past 4AM and this idea hit me like a brick#maybe this’ll mean something when it reaches the top of the queue#maybe it won't#who’s to say#also if my science instructors see this then hi 👋#even if they don’t. hi 👋#this was def a speedran thought

Applying for my Master's in gender studies kind of feels like shooting myself in the foot, but then again, it's not a useless discipline if it's being systematically censored and erased.
#not sure what research i could offer that has actual value#like i'm not doing scientific or health-related research. i'm not an engineer like all my relatives lol#i just like to think... and theorize..... what happened to all the theorists and philosophers?#seems like nowadays there's no point to grad school unless you're doing something stem or business related#annoying as fuck really.#i thought very hard about information technology and there's still time. i just have such a passion for gender/queer studies#too bad there aren't any programs that are just focused on queer/trans studies :)))))#and gender studies programs are at risk of being shut down. so that's awesome.#i still have some thinking to do....... because i don't want to shoot myself in the foot#like do i really want to work in higher education? do i reeeeally?#at the risk of sounding very arrogant i will say i'm not worried about my application if and when i do it#because i was easily the top student in my undergrad program and i have my current job to show for it#i've got great references and writing samples. just need a more concise idea for a research project...

I’m actually getting enough mental clarity to start getting back into the data space, but I’m not sure I’d be able to work on that more than part-time rn…and genAI is fuckin it all up bc I gotta be extra careful scanning job postings to make sure they’re not asking for that :/ the people/hiring managers who post the job descriptions sometimes know v little about what the job actually involves so it feels a bit like a minefield
#I’ll do machine learning for useful or scientific purposes#but genAI is neither of those things lmao#useless party trick ass ai application#blarg

Eddierotica pretty please, that sounds too good
Eddie, hitting all of his kinks and special interests in this one :)
Continued from here, under the cut:
This is of course,” the alien added, “a sound application of the scientific method. And speaking of sounding, the organ can also be reached through your penis! We will also send a probe down there for our sister planet, Soundbyte.”
Make me write!
#steddie#tinawrites#wip weekend#eddierotica#narrator's voice: this was in fact not a sound application of the scientific method

gonna be a bitch for a second but "ohhh they're FINALLY teaching usamerican kids metric" 1. they've been teaching metric units in usamerican schools for decades because 2. they are the established common units of science that ALL equations are built around because 3. they're technically not metric units, they're SI (système international) which is the modern standardized form of metric and many units were redefined around standardizations that would allow for their use in these equations (for example, redefining a meter around the distance traveled by light in a set amount of time, or using kelvin rather than celsius). like yeah yeah it's funny to laugh at the usamericans using their weird measurements but if you're gonna act all high and mighty at least know your history
#sorry but im a scientist and a bitch and if you try and use celsius in the ideal gas law youre fucked!!!!#anyways. @ my non usamerican mutuals pls dont bully me i use metric (and SI) daily#also quick edit to say this was spurred by a specific post about SI units where everyone was calling them metric#so i didnt cover the whole weird interplay that metric and SI have in point 3 but the idea still stands#like. did you know that liters is NOT an SI unit? SI doesnt even have a distinct volume unit. just meters cubed#so common practice is still to use liters (or mL or μL in my case) in many scientific applications#same with celsius - kelvin is great for math! celsius is better for cells. do not switch them#basically all systems of measurement have their own importance and worth#and if you get too weird about them in my presence then i (as someone who converts between them daily) get to be a bitch#i didnt have to learn to convert between mol and mg/mL and %w/v just to not be weird about it back

Managing My Diabetes Naturally: A Positive Experience with Berberine Supplements
Living with diabetes can feel like a constant balancing act.expand_more Diet, exercise, and medication all play a crucial role in managing blood sugar levels. While I'm a firm believer in following my doctor's advice, I'm also always on the lookout for natural ways to support my health. That's where Berberine supplements came in, and let me tell you, they've been a game-changer.
Exploring Natural Blood Sugar Support
For years, I've managed my diabetes with a combination of diet, exercise, and medication. However, I sometimes felt like I was constantly chasing blood sugar fluctuations. I started researching natural supplements that might offer additional support, and Berberine kept popping up in my searches. This plant-based compound has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for various ailments, including blood sugar control.expand_more Intrigued by the potential benefits, I decided to give Berberine a try.
A Noticeable Impact on Blood Sugar Levels
After incorporating Berberine supplements into my daily routine for a few weeks, I noticed a positive difference in my blood sugar readings. My morning fasting sugars, which had been hovering a bit high, began to show a gradual decline.exclamation This trend continued over time, with my overall blood sugar control becoming more stable. It's important to note that I continued following my doctor's recommendations, but Berberine seemed to be providing that extra nudge in the right direction.
Improved Energy Levels and Overall Well-being
Beyond blood sugar control, I also experienced a noticeable boost in energy levels. The afternoon slumps that used to plague me became less frequent. I felt more alert and focused throughout the day. While I can't say for sure if this was solely due to Berberine, I believe it played a significant role in enhancing my overall well-being.
A Safe and Easy Addition to My Routine
Berberine supplements come in convenient capsule form, making them incredibly easy to incorporate into my daily routine.expand_more I take one capsule with breakfast each morning – that's it! The capsules are odourless and tasteless, so there's no disruption to my morning regimen. It's important to note that, as with any supplement, it's wise to consult with your doctor before starting Berberine, especially if you're already taking medication for diabetes.
Taking Control and Feeling Empowered
Since incorporating Berberine supplements, I feel more empowered to manage my diabetes naturally. While medication remains crucial, Berberine seems to be offering valuable additional support. My blood sugar control is more stable, my energy levels are higher, and I feel a renewed sense of control over my health. If you're looking for a natural way to support your diabetes management journey, I highly recommend discussing Berberine with your doctor.

Science and activism can and should rely on each other
I identify as both a scientist and an activist. The creation of The Climate Conversations stems from a gap in the climate world, in which key scientific discussions never really leave the academy, and in turn the climate science space is not made accessible to activists. In sharing news, scientific breakthroughs (the good and the bad), adaptation and mitigation successes, and general climate knowledge, this community page strives to facilitate and support the conversation between scientists, activists, and anyone else who has an interest in our changing climate. Activists should utilize the climate data available in order to further their work; science can provide an even stronger foundation for justifying the climate fight and for combating misinformation. In order for this to occur, science should be made easily available to those outside the scientific community. Scientists should also listen to and keep up with activists as they develop their research, implement their methodologies, and share their results; without considering the social justice aspects and implications of their work, the data can only go so far in aiding communities impacted by climate change. As building solidarity between various social justice movements is a recognizable way to make them stronger, creating an interdisciplinary connection that transcends categorization (ie, within or outside academia) can also serve to mend theory with practice, bringing scientific studies into the realm of real life. An additional nuance that is important to take into account is the difference between the uses of Western science and traditional knowledge. The scientific method follows Western ideals, and Indigenous knowledge ends up forgotten and ignored. Western science can take a page from climate activist’s books by acknowledging and uplifting these traditional beliefs, wisdom, and ideas. Incorporating Indigenous perspectives when engaging with science and activism can provide richer and more nuanced outcomes and insights for the benefit of our planet, our environment, and our communities.
To close up these thoughts is an excerpt from Sherri Mitchell - Weh’na Ha’mu Kwasset’s essay Indigenous Prophecy and Mother Earth featured in All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis:
“Ironically, the Indigenous ways of knowing and being that European colonists saw as primitive and uncivilized are now being actively sought out to save our environment and humankind from the brink of extinction. Indigenous knowledge is based on millennia-long study of the complex relationships that exist among all systems within creation. It encompasses a broad array of scientific disciplines: ethnobotany, climatology, ecology, biology, archaeology, psychology, sociology, ethnomathematics, and religion. [...] Unfortunately, a great deal of critical Indigenous knowledge has remained outside the carefully ordered categorization of Western thought, making its holistic concepts difficult to comprehend for those who have been trained to see the world in fractured pieces. It is this fractured view that has been central to the fracturing of our societies and environment.”
