MOGWAI - Ten Rapid

2019 green vinyl reissue on Rock Action.

I could never be able to put into words the effect that Mogwai’s music has had on my life.

There are no less than five life altering moments that have occurred where Mogwai’s music was front and center.

Whether it be my two years spent living in NYC with Come On Die Young blasting in my ears everyday while taking the subway to Times Square from Brooklyn every day, or navigating a new direction as a newly married man living with my wife in our first apartment as Rock Action permeated the air on a regular basis.

Every single one of the band’s incredible albums mean something completely different to me, and Ten Rapid is where the Mogwai journey begins. Where my life long romance with this incredible band first blossomed.

Before today, this was the ONLY Mogwai studio album I was missing on vinyl.

Now... my collection is complete.

“This is a great album, and for many (including myself) their entry point into the distinctive, delightful and deceptively dark world of Belle & Sebastian. It’s not necessarily a significant leap forward from their debut Tigermilk but it appeared around the same time that word of mouth had spread sufficiently for them to be namechecked and part of the soundtrack to the film High Fidelity. I think of this album fondly, having heard it heard frequently through the thin walls of cheap backpacker hotels during my round-the-world trip from 2000-2002. . I love their chamber-folk-pop vibe, all jangly guitars, gently tripping drums and most bandmembers taking it in turns to sing lead vocals at some point. Stuart Murdoch is the lead singer and lyricist and it’s his lyrics that I love most. They’re like quietly laid emotional explosives that detonate quite unexpectedly half way through a song. You should listen out for them, they’re quite something. . I think of it as a summer album, it has that light cheeriness about it. Sleep The Clock Around and A Summer Wasting (two highlights) are exemplars in this studenty who cares vibe. The Boy With The Arab Strap, Dirty Dream Number Two and It Could Have Been A Brilliant Career are perfect examples of B&S’s seemingly light yet dazzling dark songs. The 90s pretty much passed me by, I had my old favourites from the 80s that were still making records but not getting into the charts.  There were Scottish bands around from the 80s such as the awesome Simple Minds and Big Country but I want to focus on the 5 new bands that first appeared around 1987 and carried me through the music doldrums into the 90s.  Each of these bands had a "live" like feel to their records, listen on headphones and you would swear you were in the studio with them.  A clear sound, brilliant melodies and the lyrics meant something.
