Wedding Slashers (2006)

Wedding Slashers is not quite the Direct-to-DVD, zero-budget garbage I expected, but it��s close. I have extra disdain for it because the film doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page. Now on top of having to sit through this crappy, uninspired movie, I have to do a bunch of homework and go through the end credits AGAIN, this time with a notepad. You can bet your experience won’t be quite as awful as mine, but it won’t be much better.

Jenna (Jessica Kinney) and Alex (Ross Kelly) are getting married. Even before the "if anyone objects to this union..." speech comes up, a group of crazed, hillbilly serial killers arrives to ruin the special day by murdering everyone in sight.

Wedding Slashers has one redeeming value, one thing that makes it not THE WORST: the dialogue. Overall, the writing is as appetizing and stimulating as a cheeseburger left under the driver’s seat for 4 weeks during a hot Texas summer, but there are instances where the film becomes quite funny. It’s little lines throughout as characters poke fun at each other or make jokes that prevent this disaster from earning itself a 0-star rating.

While undeserving of hatred, there’s nothing to like about Wedding Slashers. The acting is so terrible it starts making you think there’s more going on than there is. For a while, I wondered if Jenna was allied with the horde of maniacs. She’s so bland, so wooden, so unemotional at the carnage I thought it was a clue that she didn't actually love Alex. I should’ve known better from the abundance of other dull performances. That’s what happens when you watch Wedding Slashers. It gets to be so uniformly, inhumanely, devastatingly bad your mind starts grasping at straws and making stuff up.

There’s not much of a plot. You get some wannabe "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" material tossed in, allusions to rape/incest (a must in all bad killer hillbilly movies), a bunch of people clutching sausage links and pretending they’re intestines, unconvincing deaths as people receive a seemingly endless supply of meat cleavers to the head. Hardly anyone gets any characterization. They’re just meat for the grinder.

Wedding Slashers is a flattened squirrel on the side of the road. You don’t want to look at it or touch it. You'd feel bad or sad at the thought of something that could’ve been lively, even entertaining now lying there, empty and dead... if you didn't know the truth. This squirrel used to sneak into single mothers’ bedrooms, steal their wallets, tear up the living room and then call Child Services so the kids would get taken away. It does have the distinction of displaying the absolute worst hair I’ve ever seen in a movie though. There’s a scene early on where Jenna speaks to a psychiatrist and it’s clearly a man who shaved his head (and not very well) to leave a Friar Tuck ring to make himself look older. It’s worse than Ben Kingsley in Bloodrayne.

I don’t care how funny you might find the title; you deserve better than Wedding Slashers. (On DVD, August 16, 2016)
