like. he's leading ms. casey through the hallways—ms. casey who's an innie like him. who he feels responsible for. she was punished bc of him in s1. he knows there are 25 different innies inside of her. she deserves freedom. they're innies. they help each other. she's alive.

but then he pushes ms. casey through the door and it shuts and the woman who turns around to peer at him through the window is not ms. casey. not the person who looked him in the eye and told him the happiest she ever was was the 8 hours she spent with MDR. she is a stranger. worse—she's gemma scout. his outie's wife. the woman his outie loves. a woman who is not helly.

does he trust his outie? if he follows gemma out into the stairwell, does he trust that mark and gemma scout will let him live. let him see helly again. will it even be possible? if gemma's freedom will bring down lumon, and mark s. only exists at lumon, then what if this is all he has? just a few more minutes to be with the person he loves? helly r.

would all of that occured to him if gemma hadn't turned around and said his (outie's) name?

what if eurydice doesn't recognize orpheus when he turns to look at her? doesn't love him? what if that's what dooms them?

Never forget that Dylan is the one who suggests that love transcends severance (IN REFERENCE TO HIM AND MS CASEY) and even he is like nah I don’t really believe that.

A lot of things definitely transcend severance, a lot of feelings! (pain, illness, emotional distress, contentedness, attraction, infatuation) But like, love is not a feeling (it’s a choice, that’s my hot take, a choice about prioritizing another person in your life, not necessarily above all others cause love takes a lot of forms, but it definitely involves making another person a priority) and if it could transcend severance Ms Casey and Mark S would NOT act the way they do around each other.

They quite literally do not care about each other beyond a sense of duty for one’s fellow man. Like yes they were going through a rough patch before the “accident” but they certainly still loved each other and they both seemingly spend most of their waking hours thinking about the other, and it’s still not enough to cross the severance barrier.

Gemma’s longing for home, her alienation, her anguish makes their way to Ms Casey, but her love for Mark does not. Mark Scout’s grief and sorrow make their way to Mark S, but his love for Gemma does not.

Mark S wants to help Ms Casey, but he accepts there’s nothing he can do and sits back for the rest of his wellness session. Mark Scout would literally kill himself and everyone around him before he would accept letting Gemma stay down there.

Ms Casey appreciates that Mark S wants to help her, but knows there’s nothing he can do, so she does her job one last time. Gemma would sink her nails into Mark and never let go if she saw him. But here they are, walking away from each other.

One of the things I love about kdramas is that it really subverts what masculinity is supposed to be. You see the loser who's down bad for the female lead (Lovely runner, queen of tears, Love Next Door, Strong Girl Do Bong Soon, the Judge from Hell), you see the soft masculinity in hometown cha cha cha, summer strike and Doctor Slump and extraordinary attorney woo, the protective kind of masculinity in any of Ji Chang Wook's and Ahn Bo Hyun's works, the reassured and confident masculinity of Seo Kang Joon in Undercover High school and Lee Jun Hyuk in Love scout, the playful masculinity in Twinkling Watermelon and Crash Course in Romance, the stoic but gentle masculinity in Doctor Romantic and Hierarchy, and the "I care about you and only you" kind of masculinity in Vincenzo to name a few.

This is progress from the old kdramas and I get that it's fictional and in real life, some of these actors are assholes. But in the era where Toxic masculinity is rampant, I think we can turn towards kdrama to have some inkling of what kind of man we should strive to be and what kind of man we should want. This should not something we see only in fiction. We should raise our sons (I'm 21) to be like this so that one day it's not just a concept for fictional love stories.
