Across a city from you, I'm with you, just as an August night moony, inlet-warm, seabathed, I watched you sleep, the scrubbed, sheenless wood of the dressing-table cluttered with our brushes, books, vials in the moonlight — or a salt-mist orchard, lying at your side watching red sunset through the screendoor of the cabin, G minor Mozart on the tape-recorder, falling asleep to the music of the sea. This island of Manhattan is wide enough for both of us, and narrow: I can hear your breath tonight, I know how your face lies upturned, the halflight tracing your generous, delicate mouth where grief and laughter sleep together.

I have mixed feelings about the beach.

It's fun. I mean, fun is a tricky concept. It's always with family, and nothing very bad happens. I eat popsicles. That's nice. I build sand castles sometimes. It's fullfilling. I play at the sea. Refreshing.

But the sand gets in my hair. I have to wash it later. My skin gets all itchy. Not very nice. If I want to go back at the sand after a good seabath it gets all sticky. Going back home is a chore. Get back in the car. All itchy and muddy and sandy and salty and sticky. Staying still at my seat so it doesn't dirty the car. Not that I can't; my parents wouldn't be mad at me. It is just so uncomfortable.

When we go to the beach, we eat snacks and Beach Food. Seafood and farofa at beach restaurants under a sun umbrella is tasty and crispy and nice. The smell of sunscreen is comforting. Watching the people around is fun. Just a shame I can't get to meet them. I should go more with friends to the beach. It's so fun. The sand is so hot. My sandals get dirty trying to protect my feet from it. It's okay. But it gets harder to walk. The sand weights them down. The view of the sea is always stunning. There's sand in my bikini. It's so annoying. We need to find a shower to clean up before going home—please let it have a shower that we can at least wash the sand away in so I don't have to go in the car like this, sandy and sticky—the ride is straight to the beach from home. We live in another city. I like long rides. I can play music on my recently fixed headphones. It's one hour. One hour to get back, with sand in my breasts and in my hair. My dad is preparing chicken snacks for us to eat. They are not the tastiest to me but they are so nice.

I know it's fun. I like it when I am there. But it's uncomfortable. And annoying. And nice. And burning hot in my feet. And refreshing at the sea. I can find shells. I love shells. I might step on something sharp. Watching the sun set before going home is magical.

I have mixed feelings about the beach.
