Kópakonan (Selkie/sealwoman) statue in Mikladalur, Faroe Islands by Hans Pauli Olsen, 2014 | 📷 Jay Swank (@ dvos_jay) Mikladalur has a legend of a selkie/sealwoman. Seals were believed to be former humans who voluntarily sought death in the ocean. Once a year, on Twelfth Night, they were allowed to come on land, strip off their skins and amuse themselves as human beings, dancing and enjoying themselves.

Between the winds, between the waves Between the sands, between the shores From the shell The song of the sea Neither quiet nor calm 🌊⚓🌬 . . . . . . . . . . . The thing I love most about @finfolkproductions is how great they are for traveling! I brought my selkie inspired painted Black Dahila fabric tail on a camping trip to a tiny island in the middle of lake Wakatipu that is only accessible by boat and it takes up way less room (and weighs wayyy less) than my silicone tail (see second photo for the size of the boat we took). I had a lot of fun editing these photos too, @willieswings knocked it out of the park! The spotting (all done with acrylic and fabric spray paint) makes blending waistlines, tail wrinkles, etc. so much easier and makes the tail completely unique. Have you customized your fabric tails? I know I've seen some awesome customization from @mermanchristian and a few other Finfolk Pod members! Let me know (or send me a DM with photos so I can see!) 👇👇 . . Inktober day 8 - A really famous faroese tale is the one about the sealwoman - every year all seal turn into a human for a night. They go to shore on the Beach and danse. A boy fell in love with one woman an stole her skin, so she couldn't get to sea again. They lives together for many years, but one day he had forgotten the key to the chest where he kept her skin and she was gone 🐚#inktober2017 #inktober only ink today is #parkerink #sealwoman #kópakonan #faroetales #nordicmythology #faroeislands #instadraw #illustration (her: Nørre Allé)

Presenting Our Gladfest18 Speakers...
Sally Magnusson will be talking about her wonderful novel The Sealwoman’s Gift at this years Gladfest 18!
Tumblr media
TALK: Saturday, 8th September 8.30pm - 9.30pm
In 1627 Barbary pirates raided the coast of Iceland and abducted some 400 of its people, including 250 from a tiny island off the mainland. Among the captives sold into slavery in Algiers were the island pastor, his wife and their three children. Although the raid itself is well documented, little is known about what happened to the women and children afterwards. It was a time when women everywhere were largely silent.
In this brilliant reimagining, Sally Magnusson gives a voice to Ásta, the pastor's wife. Enslaved in an alien Arab culture Ásta meets the loss of both her freedom and her children with the one thing she has brought from home: the stories in her head. Steeped in the sagas and folk tales of her northern homeland, she finds herself experiencing not just the separations and agonies of captivity, but the reassessments that come in any age when intelligent eyes are opened to other lives, other cultures, and other kinds of loving.

Hey with that thing you reblogged "I want what I am made of returned to me" and you said what if all hunger is just this what did you mean by that? Can u explain
oh, heh, i just decided to let my brain run in circles for a bit. i think a lot about our biological systems and how hard they work to keep this ship of theseus running, feeling hunger and eating to resupply your body with the same matter it's made of.
but then, what about other hungers? loneliness, hunger for the love of people? that's also a need to surround ourselves with what we're made of, right? or what if we long to see our childhood home again? to smell the air that morning again? to feel connected to our history? to learn how the world works? to speak to the dead?
i don't know, i think it is important.
it's originally describing a sealwoman who needs to return to the sea.
