Got a close up look at the P-I Globe on Friday evening and things are not good. Much of the neon is gone and it looks like the rust has only gotten worse in the years since I was last up close with the Globe on the roof. Surprisingly, there are a couple of bands of blue neon still glowing at the bottom. @mohaiseattle: Can't we restore this historic Seattle treasure? #seattlepi #piglobe #seattlehistory (at Seattle Post-Intelligencer) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdAHe5JLtW3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

This picture was taken in April 2017 looking at Seattle’s Great Wheel, Pier 57 and 56. The Great Wheel stands tall at 157 feet or 48 meters, overlooking Elliot Bay. If you look at the lower-center-left of the image, the Alaskan Way Viaduct still there. Today The viaduct is gone; it was replaced by a double-deck tunnel. . What a privilege to walk through this Prairie Style home in the Queen Anne community yesterday, a recent addition to the National Register of Historic Places. Big thank you to "Historic Seattle" and the homeowner for inviting us in. The home was designed by architects Willatzen and Byrne, and built circa 1911. I could go on and on about the great lecture preceding the tour, the deserved pride of the homeowner who's spent 20+ years and a ton of effort lovingly restoring the interiors, or the legacy of Willatzen's designs in our city. Instead, I'll invite you to support the most worthy Historic Seattle organization and perhaps join in at their next event. See you there! An added bonus to the day was seeing another beautiful home across the street tucked behind such a stunning tree. . . #historicseattle @historicseattle #willatzen #queenanne #seattlehistory #itsnotwhatyoulookatitswhatyousee #seattlearchitecture #theprairieschool #northwestarchitecture #matzenhouse #queenanneseattle @mlbdesigngroup https://www.instagram.com/p/B32b7B9AdL6/?igshid=5xcyksuet4m4

Throwback Thursday to July 1964 in Seattle Box's home in the Industrial District of Seattle, which is now considered SODO.
Can you recognize the business next door to us that has been lighting up lives in Seattle since 1910? Love to hear if you do!
Both these company founders were revolutionary pioneers of Seattle in the early 1900's and proudly still in operation for over 100 years.

The Underground Tour was super neat, thanks Jim! February 19 marks the 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066, which initiated the process of forcing West Coast Japanese Americans to 10 inland concentration camps during World War II. On this anniversary, it is important to remember that 120,000 people, like Fumiko Hayashida and her daughter Natalie, were targeted because of their ethnicity or their country of birth. MOHAI stands as a place where we share this history and the stories of those affected and, more than ever, reflect on how we can learn from our past to better inform the present and future for all. ⠀ ⠀ MOHAI, Seattle Post-Intelligencer Collection⠀ ⠀ #history #ushistory #japanesehistory #seattle #seattlehistory #tbt #learnfromthepast #mohai

Some of my favorite photos from my tour of the Seattle Underground in 2011! (I just found the memory card).
If you’re not from Seattle, you may not know there was a HUGE fire in 1889 that essentially wiped out the whole downtown area. Seattle was built mostly on filled-in tidelands, so it made more sense to build on top of the existing city. This raised the street level, and would help to prevent flooding which had become a common problem during high-tide.
Seattle now has a never-ending basement underneath the city. With passageways that have had many different uses over the years, from storage to prostitution, many of which are closed off at this point. But there are plenty of tunnels that are still open and available to tour, and it’s definitely worth it if you’re in the area!

SEATTLE - Pioneer square, dove tutto cominciò nel 1852. Pioneer Square is a neighborhood in the southwest corner of Downtown Seattle, Washington, USA. It was once the heart of the city: Seattle's founders settled there in 1852, following a brief six-month settlement at Alki Point on the far side of Elliott Bay. The early structures in the neighborhood were mostly wooden, and nearly all burned in the Great Seattle Fire of 1889. By the end of 1890, dozens of brick and stone buildings had been erected in their stead; to this day, the architectural character of the neighborhood derives from these late 19th century buildings, mostly examples of Richardsonian Romanesque [wikipedia] .
