I have been thinking about this all weekend.

About Segasaki constantly controlling himself in front of everyone... except for Yoh.

Controlling himself constantly, always wearing a mask, always pretending to be not just fine but happy and not just happy but to be their friend and not just their friend but to trust them and yet there was none of that.

Segasaki has spent his entire life controlling himself and wearing a mask and pretending to be who he is not but he has been trying not to do that with Yoh.

And what to him is taking off a mask and being himself is, to Yoh, proof that he cares more about everyone else in his life than Yoh because he is nice to them, he smiles for them, he talks to them, he seems to share so much more with them than with Yoh.

But it's all mask. A lie. Meticulous control at every moment.

And that's the problem.

Segasaki is constantly covering up his feelings and thoughts and controlling every aspect of himself... except with Yoh.

He isn't just covering up his emotions, he's hiding that he's sick enough to need support getting home. His weakness, his feelings, his true self, everything is locked behind a mask the moment he walks out the door or sees someone besides Yoh.

(We always see it in the show because Segasaki away from Yoh is so, so different. But Yoh wants that version of him because he doesn't understand that he's getting the real version and everyone else gets the mask. Because Yoh thinks he's getting the cruel version and everyone else is getting the better version because he doesn't understand. Because he's never been told and he's got his own issues with anxiety and depression and masks.)

Yoh might have fallen at first sight but it was Segasaki who fell much, much harder. Because Yoh found someone beautiful and captivated him but Segasaki found someone who let him take off his mask and be himself.

Now he just has to convince Yoh that who he is when they're together isn't the angrier or more hurtful version of the person he sees with everyone else but rather the real version of himself made of love and freedom and the need to care for Yoh and to be cared for in return, to be given a safe place for both of them to be vulnerable and themselves.

My personal Weatherman – Taikan Yohou

The main characters – Segasaki and Yoh.

I'll disclaim in advance that there will be no plot in this dorama, but that is the beauty of it.

Segasaki is a weather presenter and Yoh draws eromanga. They met at university and fate has brought them together ever since.

Yoh has no money to pay the rent, so Sagasaki offers him a place to live together, but in return Yoh has to agree to everything they ask him to do.

For me personally, it's a little bit of a red flag (Segasaki can easily forbid Yoh to meet his friend in a cafe, and Yoh just has to accept it). I'll be honest, this relationship is weird, and in real life Segasaki is the kind of guy who should be fucked off, not even his godlike beauty could save him.

As I mentioned before, the eight episodes revolve around the relationship between the two main characters, we are included in all of Yoh's thoughts the whole time, the narration is almost all from his point of view.

Nevertheless, their chemistry is visible even to the naked eye, which is not surprising: the first thing they did when they moved in together was hook up. There is a peculiar problem built around this too, as Segasaki decided that they would only have sex before sunny days. Why?

It's a question that everyone was curious about, and the answer is pretty prosaic. Everything revolves around the weather (it's not for nothing that one of the main characters is a meteorologist).

– Hey. Why can’t we do it when it rains?

– Huh? Because you said so. When you first moved here and we did it. 

– Huh?

– So you won’t have trouble with laundry. 

I think I've rewatched it about eight times. It's hard for me to explain, but I was touched by literally every action, every look, every touch and misunderstanding.

Of course, Yoh had no idea that he was not just a servant to Segasaki, but the most precious person to him. And Segasaki is not good at using words, which is why we were stuck in the same place for a very long time.

But every interaction they had, the painfully ridiculous date, the dialogues - it all made my heart ache. It clearly states in black and white: Yoh fell first, but Segasaki fell harder.

Fanfact: when rewatching, I decided to start not from the beginning, but from the middle (first from the fifth series to the eighth, and then from the first to the fifth). And I was right! Exactly in the middle we start to be shown flashbacks of the characters' meeting, to which very nice and interesting references were made in the first episodes. Of course, when watching them for the first time, it is easy to just not notice them. So my idea was not as stupid as I thought at first.

– Put this in some Tupperware. I’ll eat it all. You’d better not eat any. This is mine.

I’m the only one who has to know that this carry tastes bad. He did the best to make it. That made me happy. That fact is all I need. 

I'm very sensitive to this work, it deservedly became one of my favourites, because despite the simplicity of the plot, the characters are incredibly natural and beautiful in their "ordinaryness".

Yoh is a master of making things up (just like me), Segasaki is a expert at hiding his feelings and thoughts, he is sure that everything is clear to everyone (I can see your thoughts in the subtitles, you idiot. But Yoh can't read minds). As a result, Yoh didn't know they were dating for quite a while, when for Segasaki their relationship was obvious.

There aren't many characters in this dorama, but there's no need for them. We do fine with two goofballs who can't figure out the nature of their feelings until the last minute, while being stubbornly jealous of each other.

My Personal Weatherman Finale

I don't have anything super deep or insightful to say after doing a rewatch with subtitles so I actually know what was said. But I think I might have figured out what felt so different about My Personal Weatherman. It's a love story 100%, but it wasn't a 'falling in love story'. We saw the moments when they fell for each other in the flashbacks, but the story of the show already had them in love. So it was really about self-acceptance of those feelings for Yoh, and about confidence in their relationship to fully express them for Mizuki. (Maybe I do have something insightful to say.)

But also, one of my absolute favorite things about this episode was the camera choices. The fact that every time we saw them be fully honest with each other, one of them had their back turned, and then in the very end they're gazing into each other's eyes. Like it's just beautiful and perfect, because we see Yoh avoid eye contact regularly, and Mizuki will make him look him in the eye when he thinks it's important. Mizuki doesn't avoid eye contact though, so him doing so while saying these really important things that he knows have the potential to change everything is really impactful because I think it really shows how afraid he is that Yoh will decide it's too much.

I've talked some about how I fall on the Yoh side of the D/s dynamic, so I relate the most to him. But find myself most affected emotionally by Mizuki, and I wonder if that's because of that submissive part of me. Like, since we're given insight through his thoughts, the last two episodes especially, I just so much wanted him to say EVERYTHING he was thinking. I felt like he was scared that his intensity would be too much for Yoh, and I just kept wanting to be the Jiminy Cricket on his shoulder telling him that Yoh isn't as delicate as he thinks. That we aren't fragile, we can handle that intensity, we want to see that strength of love, and affection, and passion. And we may be a little nervous, but we also TRUST and have faith.

Either way this episode made me cry, it's making me almost cry as I think about it. I'm sad that it's gone by so quickly, and I hope that we get something else, a special ep, or a movie, or if the gods are with me a second season. But either way I'm 99% sure I'm gonna order the physical copy of this show and it's probably going on my comfort rewatch list.

(As a side note, I went to pull gifs for this post to add interest, and they are wearing the same tops in the first ep as they do in the finale, the gray thin boatneck top and green hoodie (technically it's a different hoodie, but that's not really the point) so it's like full circle.)

I think taikan yoho might actually be a perfect show. The show is very aware of its characters and the actors are ALSO very aware of their characters, the instrumentals tickle a rich sense of something i can't even describe but it makes me want to rewatch scenes just to experience it again. and the monologues, makes everything so clear, we know everything intimately like it's a part of us and it's very very oougghhhhh invoking. there's no unnecessary drama or additional setup for the plot to move forward The CHARACTERS move it forward. Like from the first ep we probably thought that the sunny day ban was the driving conflict but then bam it was resolved SO quickly in the 2nd ep and SO deliciously at that. It gives me cognitive dissonance with how good it keeps getting over and over with every new 24 mins (/new episode). the supporting characters are also SO good and make it all the more sublime and A++ but again without adding unnecessary tension to create stupid misunderstandings that tend to go unresolved far longer than they have to. many oh so many times, scripts tend to forget/forgo the extent of knowing and understanding characters tend to develop of e/o after spending enough time around them, knowing them. but then yaikan yoho has NEVER once done that and has only made it abundantly clear that BOTH yoh and segasaki KNOW how the other is (segasaki definitely more than yoh but then again that's what gives rise to the miscommunication cause yoh tends to forget/fail to see things while caught up in his own perceived insufficiencies which means it's always murky in his head no matter HOW clear everything is to the audience). after all that's how things happen irl too, you may know your close ones extensively and STILL have miscommunications and misunderstandings in the relationship - whatever be it's nature. and AND-
