Aaaaalright so there were a lot of requests for this, so I decided to combine the four of them into this one post. Which means it is a LONG post, so I’ll put it under the read more!

So....maybe I should get back to micro-blogging about ANIME for once, goddamn it.
Anyway, I had to go back and restart this show from Ep.1 because I’d stalled out for too long and forgot too much of the character backstory and lore.
Popped in the Blu-Ray and sat down to binge--should be easy enough to bang out 13 episodes in week, which I did.
Black Bullet is a very entertaining action/near future Sci-Fi monster fighting show. I could’ve done without the pedo jokes aimed at the main character, Rentarō Satomi (里見 蓮太郎, Satomi Rentarō) but the show just kinda goes there at times. Nothing remotely like that happens, apart from his partner, 10 year old Enju Aihara (藍原 延珠, Aihara Enju), professing wanting to marry him someday when she comes of age (which tragically due to plot reasons probably will never happen). It has the same doomed feeling as the girls in Gunslinger Girls. These 10 year old “cursed children”, always female, are dormant carriers of the Gastrea Virus that unchecked in regular humans and animals creates horrific monsters, usually outsized insects that, by virtue of the virus are able to grow to enormous Kaiju size. Cursed Children are those whose mothers got infected while pregnant. They are gifted with super speed & strength and regenerative properties but ultimately doomed to succumb to Gastrea Virus and become Gastrea themselves. The lucky ones are employed as “Initiators” for their CivSec partners.
Season 1 is ultimately about fending off a massive Gastrea Kaiju invasion of Tokyo and the Initiators and CivSec partners are assembled into a militia to back up and fight alongside the JSDF.
The characters are likable and the action is pretty good. But the best part of the English dub is getting to hear Chris Patton say things like “I will tear off your head and shit down your neck!” and my favorite chapter was probably Episode 8 where we get to hear Brittney Karbowski, voicing Yuzuki Katagiri (片桐 弓月, Katagiri Yuzuki), let loose and curse like a drunken sailor....it’s fucking glorious.
I first saw this as an Anime at the Alamo screening and I can’t remember if I won a drawing for the Blu-Ray at the time or purchased it later. I think I won it because my copy is autographed....but it might’ve been Carli Mosier who autographed it for me later at Oni-Con one year, as she voices big boss lady Seitenshi (聖天子, Seitenshi). I remember I liked it very much and Jay Hickman even came to the screening in full cosplay as his character, Kagetane Hiruko (蛭子 影胤, Hiruko Kagetane), which made it extra special. I watched Ep.5 when I got home but then went to bed and didn’t touch the show again until 2020. I don’t know why, just got distracted by other things. It happens.
Anyway, for a 2014 show it still holds up. YMMV but I liked it, glad to check it off as completed on My Anime List (MAL).
The story is about Rentaro becoming the Seitenshi's bodyguard.
The story is more character based than the first novel, which had more battle scenes. But this novel tells its story well. With more slow and emotional moments that let the characters just be themselves.
The action scenes in this novel are very well written. More action based media that wants to be serious should follow this novel's example.
The Characters
The characters are explored a lot more and a lot better than the previous novel. We learn a lot more about the relationship between Rentaro and his boss, and the necrophile Doctor. Even the new character is well explored.
The Illustrations
The illustrations in this novel are as beautiful as ever. There are 8 of them in this novel, but I wish there were more because many of the scenes that never got an illustration that definitely deserved them.
Final Thoughts
Overall, this novel is FAR superior to the first novel. The story is well told (with plenty of emotional scenes), the characters and their relationships are well explored and the illustrations are beautiful to look at.
If you are looking to try light novels for the first time, look no further!
