a gentle kiss to ask forgiveness 

Swordplay was far from her best subject. Setting aside her personal fear of her hero’s relic and the terror her crest held over her, swords were scary. It took away the comfort of distance, forcing her to get close to her opponent. The weapon grew impossibly heavy after a few swings, leaving her arms burning and feeling like lead. At best it left bruises on her opponent, but seeing the blood of another dripping from her sword… as if it were dripping from her own claws…

It was very easy to get into her own head during sparring and it was even easier for her classmates to take her out as a result. Her pathetic attempt at a block is knocked away and there’s a sharp, bruising, pain in her hand.

“Ow! I yield!” She yelps and clutches her wrist, a deep purple bruise blossoming across the back of her hand. It throbs when she moves her fingers.

She is excused to the hospital wing at the very least…

The girl who disarmed her accompanies her, chattering about how Marianne needed to get stronger and to pay better attention or she was going to get really hurt.. Marianne politely nods along, focusing more on not moving her hand and not processing the words.

They reach the hospital wing, and Selena is free to go. But instead she hesitates for a moment before leaning down and pressing a gentle kiss near the bruise and a hesitant apology. The moment is like lightning, electric and quick. It sends a jolt through Marianne’s body, pulling her out of her own head. The girl is half way out the door before Marianne can whisper out a quiet “thank you.”

Maybe sword classes weren’t so bad.

She stormed through the halls, head burnt and steaming. Turning the corner, consumed by her rage and frustration, she collided instantly with another person. The two fell to the ground, Selena’s head reeling from impact. She looked to the other, eyes falling upon bright blonde hair. Of course she immediately thought of Odin, and her emotions subsided briefly; but in realizing the paving beneath her as not of Nohr, nor of Ylisse, her bad mood returned. “Hey, watch where you’re going!”

As she collected her belongings, she recognized spell books scattered about. She reached to pick them up for the bothersome man before her. Looking up at his face, she saw not a stranger, but another dear friend long thought departed. Sharp eyes that pierced the darkness. A mischievous grin that she had come to find comfort in. 

Her anger evaporated. Her voice threatened to crack, and her face seemed to wet of its own accord, tears plopping onto the floor. “Wait, Odin, is it really you?” Realizing how she looked, emotional, vulnerable, her cheeks flushed their familiar red. “Idiot! Where were you!”

beneath the fading hue of dusk, odin spots familiar scarlet tresses. long and cascading, they flow behind the figure like festive streamers. a celebratory occasion indeed, he thinks, for these hallowed grounds have somehow brought forth old friends far and wide.

at the sight of her, odin steeps in the warm sensation of relief. even selena's sour mood is enough to make him smile — there is consolation in knowing that even the horrors of war are incapable of changing those he loves. the world changes, warped by time and tragedy, but his friends remain unwavering constants in this lifetime and others.

given the circumstances, the collision hardly embarrasses him. eagerness overrides awkwardness, and odin recovers quickly. before the redhead is able to protest further, he sweeps her into bear-hug. "in the FLESH and BLOOD, selena of ROARING EMBERS!" he announces grandly, doing little to hide the growing grin that pulls at his lips. "who else would i be?"

odin shan't mention the tears or reddening cheeks. in both past and future, they've seen one another other at their worst and shouldered the heaviest of secrets together. to betray selena now by teasing her is simply unthinkable. and so, in what he hopes is a comforting gesture, odin slings an arm over her shoulder. with his free hand, he gestures in the opposite direction and gently pushes her along. "COME, old friend! you must tell me everything! but first, let us find someplace quiet. i fear there are prying ears all around..."
