Mediterranean marine litter mapped by satellite, from ESA - Monitoring marine litter from space is now a reality (via Jonty Wareing):

Automation was what made the project possible, harnessing supercomputers and advanced search algorithms. The team found thousands of litter windrows, most more than a kilometre long – and some reaching 20 km in length. The result was the most complete map of marine litter pollution to date.

Emissione di metano dai ghiacciai artici aumenta la CO2

Dal ritiro dei ghiacciai artici una nuova minaccia per l’ambiente. Regioni artiche sempre sul filo del rasoio per le conseguenze della crisi climatica: questa volta le aree alle estreme latitudini della Terra tornano agli onori della cronaca per una ricerca che ha individuato un’inattesa sorgente di emissioni di metano, potenzialmente in grado di peggiorare lo scenario del riscaldamento globale. La fonte in questione è costituita da acque sotterranee che, a causa del ritiro dei ghiacciai, vengono alla luce e liberano ampie quantità di metano. Lo studio, dal titolo “Groundwater springs formed during glacial retreat are a large source of methane in the high Arctic”, è stato pubblicato su Nature Geoscience ed è stato condotto da un gruppo di lavoro internazionale sotto il coordinamento del Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra dell’Università di Cambridge. L’indagine si è basata sia su dati satellitari sia su rilievi in situ; le osservazioni sono state effettuate della coppia di satelliti Sentinel-2, che fa parte della costellazione ideata nell’ambito del programma Copernicus della Commissione Europea. Nello specifico, gli studiosi hanno analizzato le immagini raccolte da Sentinel-2 in un arco di tempo compreso tra maggio 2021 e aprile 2022.

Una caverna di ghiaccio alle isole Svalbard L’area geografica oggetto della ricerca è quella delle Isole Svalbard, arcipelago del Mar Glaciale Artico situato a nord della Norvegia; in questa zona il riscaldamento globale si è fatto sentire con notevole intensità, al punto che tra il 1970 e il 2020 la temperatura media è aumentata di 4°C. Grazie allo sguardo acuto di Sentinel-2, sono stati monitorati 78 ghiacciai presenti su queste isole con particolare riferimento alle aree in cui la coltre bianca si è ritirata: sono appunto le zone a rischio per l’emersione delle acque di falda da cui derivano queste nuove emissioni di metano. Le acque sotterranee che liberano il gas sono rifornite da una rete nascosta in massima parte sotto i ghiacciai: questo sistema viene alimentato da grandi riserve idriche che affondano le loro ‘radici’ nei sedimenti ad esse sottostanti e nel substrato roccioso che le circonda. All’analisi dei dati satellitari hanno fatto seguito i rilievi sul posto: l’analisi dei campioni di acqua ha evidenziato un’alta concentrazione di metano che può sfuggire a questa sua collocazione per disperdersi nell’atmosfera. I ricercatori, inoltre, hanno rilevato la presenza di aree in cui le emissioni di gas sono più intense e hanno collegato il fenomeno alla tipologia di rocce da cui l’acqua di falda emerge. «La quantità di metano che fuoriesce dalle sorgenti analizzate sarà probabilmente sovrastata dal volume totale di gas intrappolato sotto questi ghiacciai – ha dichiarato Andrew Hodson, docente presso l’Università delle Svalbard e secondo autore dell’articolo – Ciò significa che dobbiamo urgentemente stabilire il rischio di un improvviso aumento di perdite di metano, perché i ghiacciai continueranno solo a ritirarsi mentre lottiamo per frenare il cambiamento climatico». On one hand, pre-betrayal discovery is Rooster!Sentinel slinging the Cogless versions of two of his sons/grandsons over his shoulders. D-16 won't bow before the false Prime, but he'll lower his face because of the resulting selfcest and the filthy, filthy commentary on Megatronus' (his hero's) sexual preferences.
