The Guardians of the Globe need someone who does AOE damage, jeez. Like 80% of them are just "punch real hard". Sure Rex has explosives but he also is otherwise just a guy. The sequid fight would have been no problemo if there was somebody who had unpierceable skin AND some AOE.

Invincible "In About Six Hours I lose my Virginity to a Fish" Review

Hot off the season premiere last week Invincible looks to keep the season progressing. They certainly take a relentless approach in this episode with multiple storylines and plot threads that add depth to many of the core characters.

We shall start with Invincible and the things he deals with during this episode. Mark is coming up to his high school graduation, which is rudely interrupted by his old friend Doc Seismic. Mark then continues to deal with the fall out of his fathers actions when he is summoned to Atlantis to face trial. We are really seeing the way trauma affects people as Mark is persistent in doing the opposite way from his father. Most shows would simplify this down to easy details while Invincible as a series chooses to make it the primary focus. It definitely allows this to branch into the other storylines.

Elsewhere in this episode, we begin to see the frustration Mark's double life is having with Amber. We also see the struggle Atom Eve is having with making the right choice for the right reasons. All of this stems from what occurred during season one. The choice for Eve to want to help and have good intentions was seen to backfire. What this series does so well is that it reminds those around superheroes often don't have powers, but the trauma of superhero life has an impact on them as well.

So much happens in this episode from a villainous perspective and from a world building perspective. We catch glimpses of The Lizard League, the Sequids, as well as Angstrom Levy, and what his next move is. We know there are two episodes left before a break. It is doubtful all of the threads introduced in this episode will be resolved, but it lays the foundations for the remainder of the season. I, for one, am loving every aspect of this season and the character and world building it has accomplished in two hours. There is plenty more to come, and I will be right there waiting. Bring on more......

"How do you mean?"

Shapesmith looked up at the night sky, staring into the endless star-studded expanse that lay above the pair. "I never really... fit in on Mars. Quite a few of us didn't." They blinked, lips dented where they bit at the interior of their mouth. "Our society was... conformist. We all wore the same clothes, worked the job we were assigned as soon as we got it. Even our names were given to us by the Emperor's council."

Ky was listening intently. "That bad?"

"That bad." He looked down now, peering at the sea of green blades that stretched down the hill and over the land in front of them. "Finding the rebels was a breath of fresh air. There, our only similarity was the differences between each of us. We all wore styles that deviated from the imperial colours. I chose black and white, the colours of the sh'urzz."

"The what?"

"The sh'urzz. It's a cave-dwelling flying creature, only dwells in points too cold for most Martians to follow. They're seen as symbols of difference, and freedom. Of course, the Emperor hates them, mostly because he can't get to them, can't control them. I always admired that about them... the freedom that comes with being beyond the reach of others."

Ky felt a twinge of sympathy at that particular sentiment. They were still burdened by years worth of trauma, often feeling as they were drowning in a sea of helplessness. Sometimes, they still wish that they could simply sprout wings and take flight, to escape the ties that bound them, whether from the hands of their former colleagues or the cold, skeletal grip of Cecil. "I think I get it. Wanting to fly away from it all, to find your own little... crevice, a place where you can't be touched."

"Yeah. A crevice." He sighed. A slight smile warmed the Martian's face. "Y'know, coming to Earth was... like a hundred culture shocks in one. This place, it's so diverse. Everyone wears something different, they all look different, they're allowed to look different. If I didn't know any better, I'd think I was in the afterlife!"

"Really?" Ky's experience of Earth was starkly different, and much more negative than Shapesmith's, so of course they were inclined towards disagreeing. "From what I've seen, we're not all that."

Shapesmith shot them a look, a cross between disbelief and surprise. "You're kidding, right?! This place is amazing!" They threw their hands up, gesturing around at the world. "I mean, look! There's so much to see, and just on the surface! I wish Mars was half as lush as this place!"

"Huh... well, what about you?" Ky asked. "I mean, I get that looking human is probably the biggest change you've ever gone through, but... it's still pretty basic, by human standards at least. No offence."

"Oh, is that bad?"

"Not really. I just think you'd benefit from... exploring some of the other options that humans have come up with."

"Huh... y'know what? I think I'd like that. Yeah, I'd like that a lot."

YES!!! YES YES YES I LUV HOLDING HANDS SO MUCH 💕 constant need to be holding onto him like some kind of weird tick. arle's hands are sooo long and pretty and delicate, ofc since he's a musician hes gotta have long fingers hehe. ive always imagined him to have porcelain-like skin, mostly bc of the way his face fractures during that fight with brighella reminds me of how cracks form in porcelain or ceramic. dont ask me how solid porcelain can move and bend we're talking abt living dolls infused with will thru alchemy ok AJSDKLHASK. anyway!!! i also think unlike most automata, bc of the combustion device in his chest he has his own body heat hehe :3 so hes nice n warm, perfect for holding. augh his hands r so much bigger than mine probably...longer but not a lot wider since his hands are probably on the thin side. again perfect 4 holding.

uwa,, i think at first arle would be v gentle and tentative abt hugs at first, both bc he is completely unused to any kind of physical affection, and bc he's afraid of hurting me: squishy fragile human. he's spent a very long time only hurting maiming and murdering so he's nervous abt it u know. What If He Squishes Me To Death. after a while tho he gets more comfortable (and has a better understanding of how much force the average human can withstand) n he hugs me more often :) hes so fockin tall so a lot of times he'll pick me up for a hug so he doesnt have to bed down ajskdlja Picks me up like a naughty cat. abovely mentioned combustion and fire canister in his chest make him soooo warm n great for cuddles hehe

CAN I GET A MF HAND KISS ⁉ pleaseeeeeeee hes so fucking dramatic and like stereotypically chivalrous in a way that you know he learned it all from theatre performances n columbine's romance novels so of COURSE hes into hand kisses. constantly kissing the back of my hands, my palms, my fingers, etc etc. ALSO he does the french thing of cheek kisses for greetings hehe. excuse to kees me more

ABSOLUTELY BABY!!!!!!! oughh his hair is one my favorite things abt himmm 💕💕 its so long n pretty n silky i love running my hands thru it brushing it for him braiding ALL OF IT!!! hes my everythang 🥰 im not good at braiding but i get a lot of practice in. when he was being rebuilt by the a.r.c. kero was helping to make new clothes for the pionniors and i maaaay have designed him an outfit that shows off his pretty hair more >:3 i saw that reveal during the brighella fight and lost my shit. i think he plays with my hair pretty often too hehe he likes how soft n fluffy it is, and he's new to actually being able to Feel Things (we gave him and the others an upgrade so they have the same simulated nerve endings as dernier) so he's like, a little fascinated by the sensation

how can one describe matt helm? they really like him but they would call him a slut and a bit of a sexist. they also think he's funny. he's fun to be around, except for when it puts your life in danger. they think he's good photographer and an interesting guy. they aren't sure what to make of him working with ICE. they respect that he sticks to his morals there and can't be bribed.

matt would describe mike as things that would have to be redacted. also, he thinks they're quite adorable. a lot more shy than the women he's used to. he really finds them to be pleasant company, even when just talking. he appreciates their openness with their relationship (something that has made him avoid any kind of commitment is feeling locked down and mike doesn't do that) and that they take an interest in his work (both spy and photographer).

2. when in canon does your self insert come in? do you have a scene in mind for your entrance?

— sooo um. my toxic self-shipper personality trait is that i don’t even want to be a part of most of my source’s narratives that much, i’m fine just chilling in pre- or post-canon or be mentioned in passing (as long as i get to make out with my f/o behind the scenes), and as such. i hadn’t give much thought to my s/i’s place in the pussyboots movie.. as counterintuitive as it sounds. if i had to choose an entrance tho, i would suggest jack nonchalantly taking out stuff out of his bag somewhere in third act like, ‘let’s see what’s left, my silver axe, my AiW reference, my fiancé, my logarius’ wheel…’ after which néné is just there. doing their nails. giving people and cats disapproving side-eyes. the works.

15. how does your self insert play a role in the plot of the story? do they help directly defeat the villain, support the heroes, etc.?

— perfectly content to be a dark mistress trope. might be more proactive in post-canon (looking for ways to revive their significant bother ^^)

— néné is rumoured to have somewhat fickle and volatile personality, with many immature quirks (for example, being a picky eater; but it’s just that they have a lot of food allergies). their favourite dessert is lemon tart (but no one tell this to jack)

On reflection I'm realizing that a really prominent thematic throughline in Invincible, indeed, in a lot of Kirkman's writing, involves taking a character who's trying to Make A Hard Utilitarian Choice and going, hey, hang on, did you actually need to do that or are you just chasing the high of being Adrian Veidt. Were you actually in between a rock and a hard place here or did you do something expedient and thoughtless to try and resolve the situation at hand, which you now feel the need to dress up after the fact in the language of self-sacrifice even though it's some other guy's arterial spray all over your nice outfit. Are you actually in this for the omelet or do you just really enjoy the tactile sensation of breaking eggs

One thing I don’t like about Invincible is how back in the first few volumes Kirkman replaces Amber with Eve because the former was always forced to wait for Mark on the sidelines, just to do the same with Eve as their relationship progresses…even though she’s another superhero.

you two went through a lot together, especially since how he’s literally a superhero

despite that though, you both were able to overcome the challenges and became stronger than before

later that day, he asks you to get some coffee together. his treat

you immediately said yes since you haven’t see him in a while, he just came back from space and all you want to do is just know what happened out there

when you arrived at the place, he was sitting there at a table

when he noticed you coming in, he immediately turned his back and started waving at you with a small smile on his face

he seemed okay, thank gosh

you went over to him and sat down across from him, he seemed relieved to finally see you

“Mark! I’m glad you got back safely. I missed you.”

“I missed you too, not being able to text you in space made me just want to fly to Earth to see you.” He said and chuckled a bit.

Mark always had a soft spot for you

whenever you tell him you think that you two aren’t spending enough time together, he always tries to cancel his mission so he can stay with you unless it was something he actually needs to do

he told you everything that happened — omni man, new half-brother, sequids everywhere, etc

listening to it just made you realize how much Mark has been through

“I really need a break from space and everything that happened, right now I just want to spend time with you.” He said and then placed his hand on top of yours.

even though he’s busy a lot, he always tries his best to spend quality time with you

isn’t that so sweet? trying to make time for you despite having a busy schedule

“Yeah, just know that I’m here for you okay?” You responded, trying to comfort him. A smile forms on his face and he looks into your eyes.

“Thank you. I really needed to hear that. I love you, so much.”

"Really now?" Kyle narrowed his eyes, his lack of belief in that statement evident. "Because if I didn't any better, I'd say it looked two of my team members are sucking face with each other. In the team break room. The very public team break room."

"Well..." Gerda started, but soon enough whatever sentence she had cooked up died on her tongue when met with the older hero's disappointed gaze. "No, no, there's nothing I can say to get out of this one."

Ife looked up at the smaller woman, far less happy than she had been a few minutes before that Gerda was still straddling her. "You don't say."

"Okay, anyway... do I at least get to know when this happened?" Kyle gestured, trying to change the subject. "Cause it's kinda important I make sure this ain't, y'know, impacting the team at all."

Both women looked at one another. They stammered for a moment each, before replying in unison. "A while?"

"A while." Kyle didn't seem too convinced by their answer. "Issat like 'days' a while, or maybe 'weeks' a while? Hell, d'you even think it could be... no, it couldn't possibly be 'months' a while, could it?" His sarcasm was heavy, yet undercut by a serious edge.

"...Two months?" Ife offered meekly. "We didn't really put, um, a stamp on the day. It just sort of... happened."

The older hero made a quiet 'hmph' noise, followed by a murmur. "Just like me an' Pavel."

"Sorry."

"Nothing." He scrunched his eyes, rubbing at his forehead with the back of his hand. "Y'know what? It ain't my business. Just... make sure you're teammates first, m'kay?"

The couple nodded, again in unison.

"Alright." Kyle turned and began to walk out of the break room, muttering something under his breath as he left. "And I thought I was a horndog at that age!"

i loveeee spring so that’s definitely kero’s favorite season, all the flowers n animals n the nice weather make ‘em happy :) but i think their favorite event would be halloween!! candy and trickery, the perfect combination hehe. for arle, i’m leaning towards autumn being his favorite, he likes the cooler temps and the changing leaves. as for events…maybe im being biased n sappy but i think his favorite would be valentine’s day 🥺

🐞 How do you/your f/o spend your days in the village?

kero would probably do gardening or bug catching, + a lot of hanging around the central plaza n running around! u know that funny naruto run villagers do sometimes hehe. i think arle would be a little bit of a kk slider vibe and spend a lot of time playing his lute in the plaza :3 you can also find him reading books n chilling under trees

full disclosure, shapesmith has never been on my radar as a particularly interesting character for me, like… angst wise. but i’ll give you something because i’m nothing if not capable of making people suffer

shapesmith reminds me, oddly enough, of john doe (joker) from the telltale batman series. i played that shit YEARS ago. but there’s something about the two of them that feels the same to me, and it might be the endearing unfamiliarity with the world around them — in telltale, i think joker had memory problems — and their source of heroic action being a result of mimicking those around them. also their childish naïveté.

hes also a silly guy. like john doe and oliver, to an extent, he has an incredibly low awareness of how the world functions, what morals really are. thats all well and complicated, but i think the sadder thing about him is that he felt this complete pull away from his people, a fundamental difference between them, and was reckless enough to follow the dream even though it cost his people EVERYTHING. its a common theme in invincible where characters follow their own paths selfishly, setting themselves apart from what’s expected of them (nolan and mark come to mind almost immediately). i think shapesmith takes a lot of blame from the people around him for the sequid invasion and while he does feel guilt, he has no clue how to repent for that in a way that is appealing to humans. unlike nolan and oliver, nobody’s teaching this guy how to be human.

even the way he interacts with powerplex is, i feel, a genuine attempt to understand him. shapeshifting into invincible wasn’t mocking him, i think he just took it very literally and was pretty excited to be able to do something helpful. obviously not helpful, because he misread it. he also seemed gutted that the police didn’t recognize who he was.

he’s not sad in this gut wrenching, overly tragic way. it’s kind of a slow-bleed pity, a knife wound ya didn’t really feel at first, where he’s so funny until you really think about it. then it’s like “oh, this guy didn’t get his dream of seeing the stars bc he got fired from nasa, nobody likes him, he doesn’t understand the world, he’s a piece of utility for the gda, and he has nobody to talk to even though there’s other characters who might get it”

like ouch! hope this suffices. a little think piece and a silly doodle just about sums up what kind of blog i aim to be
