Time and Place: 233.23 million years ago, in the Carnian of the Late Triassic

Saturnalia is known from the Alemoa Member of the Santa Maria Formation - it is also possibly known from Zimbabwe, but this assignment is dubious 

Physical Description: Saturnalia was probably a very early Prosauropod - aka, those dinosaurs that were more closely related to the large and famous Sauropods than any other kind of dinosaur (the official name for these dinosaurs being Sauropodomorphs). As an early Prosauropod, then, Saturnalia didn’t look very much different from other early dinosaurs - it was small, fluffy, squat, and bipedal. It was so much like other dinosaurs that it is often classified outside of Sauropodomorpha proper - and that continues to be a source of debate for these dinosaurs. In fact, according to some, it’s an early theropod!! More work is clearly needed, but regardless, Saturnalia was about 1.5 meters long and no more than a meter tall. It had a somewhat long neck - but no longer than other early dinosaurs, certainly not proper sauropodomorph length - and a small head. It had short arms, somewhat short legs, and a short tail as well. It was very slight, and had a skull like that of prosauropods, though its legs were more like those of theropods. Overall - a very average looking early dinosaur, and certainly very similar to the early Sauropodomorphs and the early Theropods of the time.

Diet: Saturnalia probably was an omnivore, feeding on both meat and plant food, at low levels of vegetation and mainly focusing on very small animals. Though it is also possible that it was a carnivore.

Behavior: Saturnalia, regardless of its affinity, would have been a very skittish animal - avoiding predators in its environment at all costs, and running about on its tip-toes in order to avoid danger. It was probably at least somewhat social, given multiple skeletons have been found of it, though of course we cannot be certain of such. Regardless, it would have spent a large portion of its day foraging on food, looking around for leaves to strip from branches and small animals to catch in its mouth. It would have probably taken care of its young, and may have formed family groups to do so. The long-ish neck of Saturnalia would have allowed it to reach deeper into the plantlife in order to grab food out of reach.

Ecosystem: The Santa Maria Formation is a hotspot of early dinosaur diversity, showcasing especially the initial explosion of Sauropodomorphs after dinosaurs first appeared. This was an extensive floodplain environment, filled with seed ferns and conifers, giving Saturnalia good amounts of cover to protect it from other creatures. This was important, because Saturnalia was far from alone in its home. Here, there were predatory dinosaurs, such as the Herrerasaurid Staurikosaurus and the prosauropod Buriolestes; mystery dinosaurs like Nhandumirim; other early prosauropods like Pampadromaeus and Bagualosaurus; the Lagerpetid Ixalerpeton; the weird Aphanosaur Spondylosoma; large Loricatan predators like Rauisuchus, Procerosuchus, Prestosuchus, Decuriasuchus, and Dagasuchus; large herbivorous Aetosaurs such as Aetobarbakinoides, Aetosauroides, and Polesinesuchus; rhynchosaurs like Hyperodapedon and Brasinorhynchus; mystery reptiles like Barberenasuchus; Proterochampsids like Cerritosaurus, Chanaresuchus, Proterochampsa, and Rhadinosuchus; Erpetosuchids like Pagosvnator; and plenty of synapsids such s Chiniquodon, Candelariodon, Exaeretodon, Protuberum, Santacruzodon, and Trucidocynodon. In short - an extremely diverse and flourishing environment, showcasing the true weirdness that was the Triassic period.

Other: Was Saturnalia a theropod or a prosauropod? The jury is still out. Its back half looks much like that of a theropod, but its head? Similar to prosauropods. The most recent analysis has it as a sauropodomorph - probably - but people still debate, and arguments continue to go on. It is often considered a part of a bigger group of dinosaurs including animals like Guaibasaurus, but some of these animals in recent studies have been found as prosauropods, and some as theropods, breaking up the group. So, the scientists continue to debate, and the exact nature of Saturnalia remains a mystery - but, for now, we can probably still call it a Sauropodomorph, along with Pampadromaeus.

Here a few ways to watch Sanremo online starting on tuesday february 4th 8:30 pm (it’ll probably start with a 5 minutes “anteprima = preview” every night), until saturday february 8th, when the final will be broadcasted.

Hosts & Guests + Other Stuff

This years’ host will be Amadeus (who choose the songs taking part into this Sanremo), a TV and radio host. He will be accompanied by 10 female co-hosts, all coming from TV, songs, sport and information fields: Francesca Sofia Novello, Laura Chimenti, Antonella Clerici, Diletta Leotta, Emma D'Aquino, Sabrina Salerno, Alketa Vejsiu, Mara Venier, Georgina Rodriguez, Rula Jebreal. They will appear on few nights (or just one) each. The radio and TV host Fiorello will be present all the 5 nights, same as the famous singer Tiziano Ferro. They will appear on stage randomly to entertain and sing, maybe also with other guests. Some of the one-night guests might be the singers Al Bano & Romina Power (with a new song, probably on day 1), Zucchero, Ghali, Gianna Nannini, Biagio Antonacci, Tony Renis, Massimo Ranieri, Jhonny Dorelli, i Ricchi e Poveri (all the 4 members who originally started the band), Ultimo, Lewis Capaldi, Dua Lipa, Mika (these last 3 probably on Thursday and Friday night); the actors/singers of a couple of Italian movies: Pierfrancesco Favino, Kim Rossi Stuart, Emma Marrone, Claudio Santamaria (Gli anni più belli - Gabriele Muccino) and Diego Abatantuono, Christian De Sica, Angela Finocchiaro, Massimo Ghini, Paolo Rossi, Rocco Papaleo (La mia banda suona il pop - Fausto Brizi); and let’s not forget the Oscar winner Roberto Benigni. For the 70° anniversary of the competition, a 300 meters red carpet has been held in Sanremo to connect the roads nearby to the Ariston theater. The names of the past 69 editions’ winners are written on the red carpet and they may stay there also after the end of the competition (not sure though - take a look at the pics here). An outside stage, called Nutella stage, has been build in the streets of Sanremo. Guests and hosts will randomly go there as well to cheer the crowd.

How it works 

Differently from last year, this year the young/newbie section is back. So there will be 24 singers in the Campioni (champs) section and 8 in the Giovani (young/newbies) section. The winner of the competition of the Campioni section will represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest: if he/she/them won’t accept, the choice will be another artist, usually the 2nd classified. Another difference with the past edition is that the “Duets night” will take place on the 3rd night. The Campioni’s singers will perform (with another Italian or foreign artist) a song from a past Sanremo edition. This special evening will be called Sanremo 70. Differently from the past, the rank at the end of the 3rd night, will change also the rank after the 2 first nights (votes will be added to the general rank).

Day 1 - co-hosts: Rula Jebreal, Diletta Leotta. Prob. guests: Fiorello, Tiziano Ferro. “Gli anni più belli” actors, Emma Marrone (will sing too), Gessica Notaro and Antonio Maggio, Al Bano & Romina Power. We’ll hear 12 Campioni’s songs (in order of performance: Irene Grandi, Marco Masini, Rita Pavone, Achille Lauro, Diodato, Le Vibrazioni, Anastasio, Elodie, Bugo e Morgan, Alberto Urso, Riki, Raphael Gualazzi) and 4 Giovani’s (Eugenio in via di Gioia, Fadi, Leo Gassman and Tecla Insolia). 2 songs of the Giovani will be excluded after two different 1 vs 1 contests (Eugenio in Via di Gioia VS Tecla Insolia || Fadi VS Leo Gassmann). The two winning songs (one for each contest) will pass to the 4th night. We’ll have a first rank of the 12 Campioni who performed tonight.

Day 2 - co-hosts: Emma D’Aquino, Laura Chimenti, Sabrina Salerno. Prob. guests: Fiorello, Tiziano Ferro. Zucchero, Ricchi e Poveri, Gigi D’Alessio, Massimo Ranieri, Paolo Palumbo, Novak Djokovic and his wife. The remaining 12 Campioni’s (in order of performance: Piero Pelù, Elettra Lamborghini, Enrico Nigiotti, Levante, Pinguini Tattici Nucleari, Tosca, Francesco Gabbani, Paolo Jannacci, Rancore, Junior Cally, Giordana Angi, Michele Zarrillo) and 4 Giovani’s songs (Fasma, Matteo Faustini, Martinelli & Lula, Marco Sentieri) will be performed tonight. 2 songs of the Giovani’s will be excluded after two different 1 vs 1 contests (Martinelli & Lula VS Fasma || Marco Sentieri VS Matteo Faustini). The two winning songs (one for each contest) will pass to the 4th night. We’ll have another rank of the 12 Campioni who performed tonight, and then one with all the 24 contestants (a mix with day 1′s rank).

Don Felipe traveled to Panama between October 17 and 20, 2013. He was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel García-Margallo, was received upon arrival at the "Panamá Pacífico" International Airport by the Spanish Ambassador to the Republic of Panama, Jesús Silva Fernández, and by the vice minister in charge of Foreign Relations of the Republic of Panama, Mayra Arosemena.

He began his activities on October 17, with the opening of the Ibero-American Business Meeting. Don Felipe stressed the role of Spain as a "vertex" of relations between Spain and Europe. "both to channel European investments in Ibero-America, and to be the bridge for the growing investments and position of Latin America in Europe. An opportunity increasingly used by Multilatinas Companies that are increasingly competitive and bet more on technological sectors Today, 23 of them are among the 100 largest global firms in emerging markets. Later, the Prince of Asturias attended a panel in the Ibero-American Business Forum, entitled "Paraguay: the best kept secret in Latin America", where he coincided with the President of the Republic of Paraguay, Horacio Cartes. On the 18th, Felipe presided over the inauguration of the Spanish Cultural Center, located in the old town of Panama City. He was accompanied by the Secretary of State for International Cooperation and for Latin America, Jesús Gracia, received upon arrival the greeting of the Minister of Education of the Republic of Panama, Lucy Molinar, and the director of the National Institute of Culture, María Eugenia Herrera, with whom he toured the facilities and visited the exhibitions "La palabra y las letras", by Antón Lamazares, and "Ibero-American Biennial of Culture", of the Ministry of Public Works.

He also attended the closing lunch of the Business Meeting, at the Megápolis Convention Center, where the recognition of the Ibero-American Secretary General, Enrique Iglesias, took place. Later, Don Felipe and the President of the Portuguese Republic, Cavaco Silva, had a conversation walking through the gardens of the hotel complex, the Prince also held informal meetings with other Ibero-American leaders. In the afternoon the Prince of Asturias attended the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Latin American Parliament (Parlatino), accompanied by the Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy. Upon arrival, he was greeted by the institution's president, Elías Castillo, and the Board of Directors. During the act, the President of Parlatino and the President of the Republic of Panama, Ricardo Martinelli, intervened.

Next, Don Felipe traveled to the Figali Convention Center, where he attended the opening ceremony of the 23rd Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government. At the end of the opening ceremony, he attended the official dinner was offered by the President of Panama to the leaders attending the Summit, held at the Biodiversity Museum of the Panamanian capital.

Lecco, i beneficiari del San Nicolò d'Oro 2022. In occasione della Festa di San Nicolò organizzata dal Comune di Lecco dal 2 al 6 dicembre 2022, domenica 4 dicembre alle ore 11, presso l'Auditorium Casa dell’Economia - via Tonale 30 si è svolto il tradizionale Conferimento delle civiche benemerenze San Nicolò d’Oro, con l'Intervento musicale a cura dell’orchestra della Scuola Civica di Musica Lecco - Direttore Marcello Corti. I Beneficiari del conferimento: Vittorio Martinelli (alla memoria): pittore, nato a Lecco nel 1945 e scomparso nel 2019. Con i suoi dipinti di Lecco, parte di una vasta produzione che ha abbracciato anche l’arte sacra, ha fatto conoscere e amare la bellezza e la magia del nostro territorio, costituendo, con passione, un punto di riferimento per la formazione di numerosi giovani artisti lecchesi, capaci oggi di dare nuovi impulsi all’arte pittorica locale. Il Comune di Lecco ringrazia Vittorio Martinelli per aver contribuito con la sua produzione artistica a esaltare la bellezza della nostra città. Angelo Borghi: storico e ricercatore, nato a Lecco nel 1942. Con le sue estese produzioni e ricostruzioni storiche e artistico-letterarie dedicate alla città di Lecco, ha dato peso e corpo, valore e spessore alle numerose identità lecchesi e alle diverse fasi di quel percorso che ha portato Lecco a diventare da borgo a città. Un impegno a tutto tondo per la nostra città che ha riguardato anche il campo istituzionale in qualità di consigliere comunale negli anni ’80. Il Comune di Lecco ringrazia Angelo Borghi per aver contribuito a indagare e a diffondere la conoscenza delle identità lecchesi e a valorizzare la storia della nostra città. Pablo Atchugarry: scultore, nato a Montevideo in Uruguay nel 1954, da quarant’anni ha fatto della nostra città la sua casa e sua fonte di ispirazione. Con le sue opere scultoree e la sua arte, ha portato il nome di Lecco nel mondo, ottenendo, nel 2018, dal Presidente della Repubblica Sergio Mattarella, il titolo di Ufficiale dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia, a riconoscimento del ruolo ricoperto in ambito culturale internazionale. Il Comune di Lecco ringrazia Pablo Atchugarry per aver contribuito con la sua produzione artistica a far conoscere la nostra città oltre i confini nazionali. Alizé Piana: atleta, campionessa mondiale junior di wakeboard, nata a Schiltigheim in Francia nel 2003 e residente in città sin da allora. Con le sue imprese sportive e la determinazione dimostrata anche a seguito del grave incidente d’auto che l’ha vista suo malgrado protagonista, rappresenta un esempio per i suoi coetanei, a conferma che lo sport è uno strumento di crescita ed educazione, ma anche un’opportunità da cui trarre energie positive per rimettersi in gioco e ripartire. Il Comune di Lecco ringrazia Alizé Piana per aver dato lustro alla nostra città nel campo dello sport, dimostrando una straordinaria tenacia, determinazione e resilienza. Sandro Morganti: imprenditore impegnato nel mondo dell’associazionismo, nato a Lecco nel 1940. Con il suo concreto sostegno dei più deboli, dalle missioni in Africa fino alla campagna di aiuto alla popolazione Ucraina colpita dalla guerra, passando per il ruolo nell’emergenza Covid, rappresenta un esempio di impegno civile nella solidarietà, nel volontariato, nel sostegno al mondo associazionistico e sportivo. Anche attraverso la sua azienda, sostiene generosamente numerose iniziative, manifestazioni e realtà della nostra comunità, mettendosi sempre a fianco di chi ha più bisogno. Il Comune di Lecco ringrazia Sandro Morganti per aver sostenuto, da imprenditore di successo, un impegno civile nei campi della solidarietà e del volontariato, dello sport, dei bisogni dei più deboli.
