Your friendly translation nitpicking lover here! Do you have anything to say about how buggy talk about shanks being like the sun (oh my gosh it sounds so romantic) in the original? Is it similar?

i have to admit, at first i had no idea what you were talking about with this request. then, on a hunch, i dug up an unofficial translation for chapter 1082, and found something a bit sun-like in that translation. hopefully this is the line you meant, and i haven’t forgotten about an entirely different piece of sun-imagery dialogue from buggy…

(the rest of the discussion goes behind the cut, to protect the eyes of any anime-onlys out there!)

two different translations of the same panel of chapter 1082 page 8. first, the translation available in the official shonen jump app; second, an unofficial translation i pulled from the site where i get my japanese raws of op, the translator(s) uncredited

pretty different ways of expressing the same sentiments here. now, which one is closer to the original dialogue? let’s try and find out.

おれは… 隣にいたシャンクスがあまりに有望すぎて… / 夢なんて捨てちまってた…‼︎ ore wa… tonari ni ita shankusu ga amari ni yuubou sugite… / yume nante sutechimatteta…!!

“tonari ni ita shankusu” means “the shanks who was next to me.”

i can see why sj didn’t bother to translate that literally, but i like the unofficial translation, it feels more emphatic about this being an opinion buggy had back in the day, when they were kids together.

“ore wa X ga amari ni yuubou sugite…” is more or less “i thought X was too promising, so…”

the unofficial translation is more explicit about buggy feeling like he had less potential in comparison, but “so much promise ahead of him” feels much closer to the original than “shone so brightly with potential.” the latter is more poetic, but buggy isn’t really being poetic here.

and “yume nante sutechimatteta…!!” means “i gave up on my dreams…!!”

once again, the unofficial translation is a bit poetic about their wording, but this is the part of the translation that’s most similar, probably because the phrase is pretty unambiguous in meaning.

in the end i think i have to award the (imho) accuracy points to the official translation. there just isn’t any shining or sun imagery in the original text that i can find, anon. sorry!

One piece having multiple translations & versions makes keeping track of the names very interesting. Like I am confident it's supposed to be Zoro not Zolo but there are like 12 other characters and places I can't find a consistent spelling of. Jinbe? Or Jinbei?? Some people spell it Jimbei which I know is incorrect because the single M consonant doesn't exist in Japanese,,,, but then again neither does L and the main character's name starts with it. Is it Loguetown or Roguetown?? In the anime the sign says Loguetown in English but also Roguetown would make sense for a place that's like, pirate famous. I don't even have a guess with Al/rabasta. Also I don't think it's even a translation thing but WHAT IS THE SKELETON'S NAME??? Brook? Brooke?? Brooks?? Brookes???? WHAT IS THE STANDARD SPELLING AND DOES IT HAVE AN "S" OR NOT???

And then there's stuff that with all this you'd THINK would get messed up but doesn't. Nobody seems to have any trouble understanding that "Shankusu" comes out to "Shanks." Nobody debates what letter Luffy's name starts with (also how did we get the double F and the Y??). Usopp is just a weird name altogether but the only misspelling I see is Ussop and that's just a really common English mistake to double the wrong letter. Also nobody is out here romanizing it as Usoppu. Where we got the double P though I don't know, going to assume that's indicated by an accent mark or something idk I haven't seen the name written out in hiragana or katakana and I don't remember if you can get something from Japanese that romanizes to a double consonant like that. My understanding of Japanese is very beginner as you can tell.

for luffys bounty it goes along with the numbers that represent the gomu gomu no mi

go = 5 mi = 6

oda tends to use puns with bountys heck sanji and zoros currenty bountys include their birthdays

BOUNTY PUNS Crocodile = 1.965B 965 can be read as "ku-ro-ko", simply Croco. Mihawk = 3.590B 359 can be read as "mi-ko-ku" sounding similar to Mihawk. Buggy = 3.189B 3189 can be read as "sa-i-ya-ku", meaning "the worst".

His bounty (like the other Emperors') also represents a goroawase-type numerical pun: in Beli.png4,611,100,000, the digits 110 as the whole number "one-hundred-ten" would be read as "hyakujū" (百十?), making it homophonous with the "Beasts" (百獣 Hyakujū?) part of Kaidou's epithet.

mihawks bounty is specifically 3.59 and I think that just like how luffys bounty will be a bit above rogers the person he wants to succeeds as the pirate king zoros bounty will be a bit above mihawks and 3.6 billion given 360 pound phoenix

and sanjis will be  equal to or a bit greater than   3.59  basically 3.59 bill or  a bit over 3.59 billion and under 3.6 billion with 32 after the 59  given that  (

His name (三時 san-ji? ) can mean “three o'clock” or “three o'clock snack”. This points to a wider theme in Sanji’s character, revolving around the number 3:

ABILITIES  /  POWERS. First  && foremost Shanks his a master swordsman, though he is no longer able to match Mihawk in skill after losing his dominant hand, he’s still a massive threat. Shanks can navigate && do different jobs around his ship though he prefers to leave the navigation up to Benn. He’s can also utilize all three types of Haki to a high lv. He also has some experience with rifles && shotguns despite preferring other weapons. 

RESTRICTIONS . Shanks does not always care about his own well being, he’s a pacifist at heart && will only act (despite being very capable) When his loved ones of those under his protection are in danger. Honestly, he doesn’t even care about the reason, they could be to blame, ^^ still Shanks will get himself involved. 

He’s also partially blind in his left eye, he gets over this through the use of Haki in battle, but in every day life, he prefers if people sit on his right side so that he doesn’t get caught off guard. Shanks avoidance of conflict has affected past relationships making him decide that it’s better to part ways than deal with the conflict head-on. Shanks biggest issue like I’ve said before is that due to his complex ideals f personal morality and pacifism, he will not act, till forced to, this might mean when he finally does things could be too late. 

After Rogers death Shanks death with bottled rage && detachment. But through the years he’s gotten better at having healthier relationships thanks to his bonds with his own Nakama.

LOVES CELEBRATIONS -  Banquets && parties fall in line with his carefree nature, helping him focus on the posative. 

ENJOYS TEASING - Shakes likes to tease others, he likes to wind them up but this is mostly subject for people he likes. He tends to act a little more aloof with those he doesn’t. 

Terrible singing - You like bad songs && even worse singing, shanks is your man. He’s not actually bad at singing when he tries, but it’s funnier to just goof off. So if you’re lucky he will sing properly but normally it’s rowdy during some party.

Pleased at getting a rise out of the easily flustered clown, Shanks started to laugh. The sound was loud and bright as he tightened his arm around his friend’s shoulders. His good mood was unhindered by Buggy’s blatant show of hostility. His ears had gotten used to the high pitch of Buggy’s voice years ago and now it didn’t even seem to grate on his nerves.

His laughter lowered into lilting chuckles as he unwrapped his arm from around his companion. Buggy’s sunglasses between his fingers still, he brought his hand to face to inspect his prize. With a playful wink at the clown, he slipped on the sunglasses and grinned brightly at the other man. “Really? Well, they’re mine now.”

He straightened up to his full height, gaining only about three inches on his friend. Despite that difference, he dipped his head. The tip of his nose pressed to the surface of Buggy’s. Through the dark lenses his eyes were playful, teasing. “Don’t they look great on me, Buggy?”
