Jawsome Image via co-founder @oceanramsey // open wide 🦷😁 ・・・ Don’t you wish your dentist visits were this simple. Sharks have rows of teeth that grow and move into place as the old ones fall out #Lucky Happy photo of what was actually a really mellow redirection of a subadult tiger shark but I purposely placed my hand just slightly on the underside of the nose. The instinctual reaction for most sharks is to lift their head when pressure is applied below the snout and that means the lower jaw often drops. The underside of a sharks nose or “snout” has an array of specialized receptors that allow them to sense electrical currents. Generally I advise people that if approached by a large shark firmly place your hand on top of its head, push down, and lock your elbow and go over the top, or if it’s right at the surface move to the side and try to push with a locked elbow off the gills (if you’re in a self defense position/not diving with sharks for fun) and follow through with your other hand....I need to post videos of this. Don’t try to punch the shark...most people just end up sticking their hand in its mouth and don’t try to grab the snout because if you push on the underside even slightly like I am here you might get this movement, which is really just moving away from the underside pressure. Posted @withregram • @oceanramsey I LOVE this old Tiger Shark Queen Nikki (Ali’i Nikole) Large sharks will sometimes bite props and metal ladders or poles that conduct electricity into the water, usually its an investigatory checkout due to the attraction from the electro-receptive organ called the Ampullae of Lorenzini, an initial check (bump or bite) or two and they usually stop. In this video I gently lift her nose so she doesn’t run into the boat, but as you can see she still bites the ladder to test it out. This is why we require people to keep their GoPro’s and small electronics on poles, away from their hands, in case a smaller species wants to hone in on the electrical output. Larger species are actually easier to deter with a gentle redirection but of course ***Disclaimer***Please dont attempt to replicate, and if you are in the water and a large shark approaches you, please push down on top of the head, dont apply any pressure below the nose or snout as you can see the natural reaction is to lift away from the pressure and I needed to do this to keep her from running into the ladder, we trimmed the engines up and after a couple checks went back in to have a beautiful dive where Ali’i Nikole (Queen Nikki) was actually quite shy once she saw us looking around at her. #Repost from cofounder @oceanramsey testing shark deterrents with @juansharks to facilitate coexistence with the these amazing animals. Check them out to learn more about the work they’re doing! #Repost @oceanramsey ・・・ Just getting back to land after working with @rpela_surf independently testing their #sharkdetterent on #greatWhiteSharks #whitesharks #whitepointers way offshore in some of the remote parts of #Australia I love that this company is using independent unbiased researchers from around the world to help with their permitted studies and they’ve put all of their money into testing & development, not marketing. This photo is from #Guadalupe not #Australia but we did see one tagged shark during our time offshore. I think it’s important to help test deterrents because I would love to help people better #CoexistWithSharks #Sharkrepellants are no substitution for not consciously accounting for environmental conditions and your behavior (IE: Don’t spear fish in low visibility or surf in murky areas near sea lions and fishermen, etc) but in combination with human behavioral modification my hope is that more ways and technology can be developed to help offset humans somewhat confusing presence in the #ocean in #sharksterritory #rpela #rpelashark #rpelasharkdeterrant #sharkdeterrant #surfingwithsharks #sharkrepellent #sharkattack #sharkscience #itstheirocean #learntocoexist #respectsharks #respect #ocean #studysharks #helpsavesharks If you’re a marine biologist in Western Australia and are interested in helping with the studies you can email [email protected] to apply to get involved, it’s not glamours or easy or paid (so no conflict of interest) but it is important for the potential to help save lives 💙🌊

#Repost @oceanramsey from a very memorable dive with @zacefron and #SharkIDMoana 💙 ・・・ @zacefron @andybovine and #Moana the #TigerShark #SharkIDMoana who also just graced us with her presence yesterday 💙 So happy to see she’s healthy, alive, and swimming with more friends 💙 Photo by @juansharks @oneoceandiving more to come from @thomasvictorcarroll @anthony_walsh_ and @mermaid_kayleigh @shelle_belle_ who helped test #sharkdeterrents #tech testing yesterday @oneoceanresearch Shark deterrents are non lethal mitigation devises that basically aim to overstimulate or shock a shark away...I got shocked a few times testing these devices and the technology is still developing but Moana turned away from the device never touching it but these results are too new to publish because it could’ve been a reaction to the devices appearance. More testing is needed but I’m in support of non lethal mitigation and I also feel strongly that modifying our human behavior to factor in shark behavior and their important ecological role is an intelligent global necessity and will be a reality someday...if they continue to exist #helpsavesharks befoe they are wiped out. #Repost @zacefron ・・・ Tiger shark diving yesterday was epic. They're a red listed species with numbers less than 30,000 worldwide. Spirit animals for sure. #HelpSaveSharks #sharkandmarineconservation #stopsharkfinning
