sharp objects is legitimately one of the most devastating and ugly things i’ve ever read/seen. i think about it all the time. it changed my brain chemistry. i love it. it’s so viscerally violently girl. we need more grimdoomtradgedy media that explores female pain and trauma and violence that gets passed down from mother to daughter without it revolving around men. i don’t really remember any book/show that i’ve read/seen that has gone as far as this one did, and been so unapologetic about it without holding back for fear or being controversial or disturbing or having female characters, specifically protagonists, that are unlikeable and not heroic and still make you root for them and feel all the ugly awful things they feel.

I read the Ciara post just now and had a sudden thought that struck me forcefully enough that I wanted to share. It kind of sounds to me like Ciara, among her siblings, represents the capacity to change & grow.

(In reference to post about Killie the jockey OC’s sister Ciara, and her somewhat elusive character)

Ciara definitely feels like that, and also, as people have said, a way to process:

Blood / kinship

Poison

Truth

Choice

Clarity

Chaos / Transformation

Change and Growth

Letting Go and Giving Up (So Good May Come)

She could also be the “fawn” of trauma responses, with Charlie being flight, Killie being fight, and Colm being freeze/flop.

But seeing this pile of traits made me want to do this, just for funsies, though I’m not married to it;

Killie has strength, transformation, energy, courage, freedom; relentlessly burning fuel. He’s several pegs more highly-strung than the usual jock - but he is, ultimately, a man of action, and relentless, all-consuming forward movement. Sure, there’s darkness, but Killie ignores it and lights up fundamentally burns brightly. Sure, okay, he bites, sure he’s tiny, sure his hands and feet are small and cold and horrible, but he’s strong and makes you feel weirdly safe.

Charlie has intellect, escape, joy - and the fun there is in masking, lying and being a little fucking hater. He studied astrophysics and music, which are both elements of Air. He also has the storyteller’s power of changing the mood or the narrative.

Colm has strength overlooked, with a core of diamond, and technically possesses things like “actual fucking integrity” and “a little bit of fucking stability, which is rare around this place.” @chameleonsallinvermillion thought he’d be a good farrier...

Ciara is mutable, creative, destructive, reflective, and has surprising clarity. She’s quite dark, but hey - identity is fluid and shifting like water…

I DON’T love the only girl being water/emotion (Ursula K Le Guin: why do women have to feel while men get to think) but I DO like the light and shadow it casts on Ciara when positioned as the “water” in a little elemental set. I like the way it brings out change and growth. I won’t keep it, but I like what it showed me.

There aren’t too many girl characters who are just rotten and unlikeable, with or without a change-and-growth story (at the end of which they remain pretty unlikeable) and I really like that for Ciara. I support women’s wrongs and the multitudes they contain.
