"Losing My Religion" by R.E.M.

A Steddie break-up fic where Steve, hopeless romantic Steve, is in a whirlwind romance with Eddie. And Eddie who finally gets his big break and plans to leave Hawkins in the rear view. It starts slowly, just little things Steve doesn't take to heart: Eddie getting distracted in the middle of a cuddle session or a kiss or even sex, Eddie pulling away quicker (but he's still loving on Steve so he doesn't really care), maybe cancelling more on their date nights or claiming that he's got plans already made with the Corroded Coffin boys.

And then the space between them just gets bigger and bigger and bigger, and Steve is left behind in the dust. Abandoned again. He's always looking to Eddie, but Eddie's not looking back. They're arguing more. There's a knot, a strain weighing on their relationship.

When Steve begins to pull back, Eddie barely puts in the effort to keep him tethered. And Steve, gullible and hopeless romantic Steve, lets Eddie get away with it. Because any attention is better than none. Even if he's going to bed alone every night, waking up to a going cold space beside him. Even if he's biting his fist during an argument, saving the tears for a quick shower. Even if he has to choke back on his emotions, because any big outbursts he thinks will push Eddie further away. Will spiral them out farther.

But then Eddie just abruptly leaves. Leaves their life, their friends, Hawkins as a whole. And Steve has to get his number through Wayne, who thought the boys were still together.

And it's not until Eddie answers with a, "Hello? Oh—hold on, babe, somebody's on the phone," that Steve finally puts two and two together. They aren't even dating anymore. He hangs up before say anything.

Eddie's left with the distant sound of somebody breathing on the other side and the dial tone. Never to hear from Steve again.

He’s already displayed a slightly more submissive side in some of his cards, or at the very least he’s shown the illusion of submission. He’s definitely not opposed to letting MC climb on top of him and set the pace (even if he does end up switching roles halfway through). He’s too strong to ever fully surrender to anyone else’s will, but considering how royally whipped he is by MC, I think he’d indulge her desires if she ever wanted to ‘put him in his place’. She barely got the question out to ask him when his birthday was before he was cutting her off with the answer LMAO

She’s the one who had the kinky ass fantasy about smacking him with a riding crop after all (No Defense Zone my beloved) and I think he’d get a kick out of letting her have her way in that regard. She’s the one person he trusts implicitly. She owns half his soul and vice versa, so I firmly believe if he was ever to let his guard down and hand control over to anyone, it would be MC 🙌🏻

My absolute favorite part of this video is you can literally see the moment she decides she's going to get into mischief!

Look at how she moves, slowly and carefully toward the gap at the end of the pillow. Before this she'd been wanting to dangle down in that gap and have a look around- however that's dangerous as she could fall behind the bed and that wouldn't be the easiest place to retrieve her from. After first blocking her with my arm, and gently scolding her when she neared the edge after that she'd quickly turn around and come back to me.

The time in the video above is different. Her curiosity overpowered her and she decided she'd go for it. Once she made that choice, all her focus goes on that gap and she goes a bit faster. Her body language indicates excitement about the fun thing she is going to do.

They have a lot of quirks they share with cats, and keeping a hognose from exploring something they are curious about is like trying to keep a cat off a bed. A moment later they'll be back where they were. The easiest way to stop this, especially when they want to go off the edge of a fall hazard, is to "play airplane" where they can safely see what they were curious about, sate that curiosity, and then immediately give them something else to play with. So long as they got to see whatever they wanted to investigate I haven't had the diversion after fail.

It's also good to let them see this way, that way you show them you are there to help them achieve their goals- not restrain them or prevent them from their achievements. You are able to get them to the areas they want to see, so they don't need to be sneaky about it. (I did, in fact, let her look around and she really enjoyed herself. Hognoses absolutely love dangling down and slowly rotating around to look at everything. She enjoyed the opportunity very much. Sometimes I give her tours of the house, and she likes that too.)

I've definitely said this before but I cannot express how much I dislike the "Steve's parents are neglectful and his father is awful to him" headcanon. People can obviously headcanon whatever the hell they want and I will always support that but at the same time...boy do I dislike how popular this one is 😭 Particularly because it is so often used as a way for the fandom to like, woobify their fav boy and ~explain~ some of his bad choices/the out of pocket things he says (Well of course he wants a winnebago of 6 kids, he wants to give them the childhood he never had 😔 that's not a weird thing to say to his ex girlfriend at all!) while simultaneously giving so little grace to the characters who are canonical abuse survivors.... Idk. It feels like they want to spice up their vision of Steve by giving him some romanticized version of familial trauma where he's bravely broken the patterns and emerged as this amazing person, who's such a great role model to the kids, etc. etc. But then they turn around and get upset by Jonathan's behavior in s4 (or even Max's....) because those canonical trauma responses don't neatly fit into their boxes of what they think it should look like. It's frustrating!
