With our pets, a house becomes our home
5k Hangster MeetCute (Explicit, but not very by my standards). Bradley is the vet (DVM) that Jake takes Brisket to after he adopts her and moves to Corpus Christi to be a flying instructor.
I started this fic before I saw @yeagrave's art, but this post is 100% Jake's lockscreen (and those are a set of Jake's spare dog tags).
Monday mornings generally suck. The people who have left their pets wellness until normal business hours because they didn’t want to pay the extra emergency fees. He quietly judges them. This Monday sucks more than most though, because he’s covering another vet on what is meant to be his day off. But he doesn’t want to make the admin staff have to reshuffle the thirty or so appointments that he now has facing him in a long gauntlet of monotony. Hopefully there will be something interesting that pops up.
He deals with the standard checkups, listens to heart murmurs, administers vaccines, makes notes for the techs, gives instructions about diets he knows get ignored by owners who think they know better. He has to change his scrubs when a dog vomits on him and yeah… he wants his day off back with a deep burning passion but pushes through. He can shower and blob when he gets home and bitch and moan to his friends. They can compare Mondayitis stories and see who comes out worst.
He steps into the waiting room, and there’s only two people left, one a woman with two kittens in a carrier, and the other a man cradling a puppy. He’s only got one left for his ticket today, and it’s a puppy so okay, at least he gets to look at a cute puppy and a cuter guy.
                “Brisket?”
The guy blushes and Bradley can’t help his smile getting bigger as he gestures toward the consultation room.
                “Uh, hi.”
“Hi, I’m Bradley. What brings Brisket in today?”
“She needs a general checkup, and I wanted to register her with a vet since I moved here in the weekend… She needs vaccines I think? And to be fixed? And I wanted to ask some questions?”
“So she’s here for the works… can I have a look?” Bradley asks and the guy blushes again, looks down at the tiny bundle who looks back at him adoringly and Bradley has a thing for guys who like animals. Couldn’t be with anyone who didn’t like animals, wouldn’t feel like he could trust them. He hands the puppy over to Bradley and he handles her gently, lets her lick and sniff at him a little before lowering her to the examination table.
“Tell me about how you got Brisket,” Bradley says, running his hands down the little body, grinning as she happily licks his fingers, tail wagging enthusiastically. She’s very sweet. Most guys like having big dogs, so he’s genuinely curious as to whether this guy chose this dog, or if he’s here at the bequest of someone else. Girlfriend or boyfriend maybe. Purely out of professional courtesy.
“Uh, I’ve wanted a dog for ages. Finally getting settled in one place for a while so I figured it was finally time you know? So I went to the shelter in San Diego, not really intending to adopt then and there…”
“She’s a rescue?” Bradley says, and he’s a little surprised. Because if they’re not big dogs then they’re usually little dog breeds, so some hybrid-cross-breed that some breeder thinks will be in demand. This little thing hadn’t looked like any breed he was familiar with, but there’s so many new ones and he’s not usually up with them all.
“Well yeah, of course. She just had such a friendly personality you know?”
“She is very sweet natured,” Bradley agrees, because the guy is clearly besotted with his puppy, and it’s adorable. He listens to her heart and lungs, takes her temperature and soothes her through the discomfit.
“So did you have paperwork showing what she’s already been vaccinated for? Most shelters give you adoption paperwork?”
“Oh, yeah, they did. One second,” the guy says, pulling folded pieces of paper out of his pocket and handing them over. On the top of the paper are all the details of the dog, and then down the bottom the details of the new owner. Jake Seresin. At least he has a name now.
“Okay, so she’s all up to date with all the vaccines, she’ll need to come back in six weeks for a booster. And we don’t do on the spot spaying or neutering, you’ll have to make an appointment when she’s a little older. Try not to let her out unattended, because we don’t want to be adding to the puppy population, regardless of the fact that she’d no doubt make gorgeous babies…You a first time dog owner?”
“I grew up on a ranch, had lots of animals. Horses mainly. Well, beef stock. But lots of working animals, not pets. She’s my first.”
“Well, you made a good choice. She’s got a lovely temperament. Nice and healthy,” Bradley states, laughing as she tries to chew on his thumb and he reaches for a dog toy from the jar. “Okay, so she’s going to be mouthy, she’ll want to chew on things as her adult teeth come through. You might find a couple of puppy teeth lying around but they usually just swallow them. It’s all normal. You have any questions?”
                “Uh…I… um. Made a list.”
“Sensible,” Bradley says, and this guy’s adorable intensity is commendable, he wished more owners thought to ask their vets the questions rather than trusting Google.
“You’ve, uh, already answered a few of them actually.”
“That’s good, what else have you got?”
He asks about diet and exercise, sleep and routines, anxiety and separation and toilet training and Bradley answers them all, writes down a few notes and links to some reputable websites. Recommends a puppy obedience course, steers him away from problematic dog toys which can cause more harm than good. The appointment definitely runs well over the time, but it’s his last of the day and he’s got nowhere else he’d rather be, and after the day he’s had this is a nice silver lining.
“Anything else I can help you with?”
“No, I think that’s it. Thanks so much, it’s really helped.”
“You’re more than welcome. I guess I just have a question for you now.”
                “Of course, what is it?”
“I don’t usually do this, but you want to grab a drink sometime?”
                “A drink. Like…A date?”
                “Yep.”
                “Yeah. Yeah I’d like that.”
“Great, let me get a card.” He grabs a business card, usually reserved for when he goes to conferences, carefully prints his personal cell phone number on the back and hands it over. “I look forward to hearing from you.”
…             …             …
Jake gets back to his house and immediately lets Brisket out into the back garden, looks at the little rectangular piece of card and puts the number into his phone before he loses it. He puts the name in as Bradley but then follows it with the flame emoji, followed by the guy with the moustache and then the dog emoji. That’s enough to remind him of who exactly Bradley is. Not that he thinks he’s going to need the reminder.
He spends some time looking at the websites Bradley has recommended, sends an enquiry about the puppy obedience classes. He’d already made an appointment for the booster shots and for getting Brisket fixed. Definitely doesn’t want to wait that long before seeing Bradley again. He grins. Only in town for five days and he’s got a guys number. Without even trying. Phoenix told him a puppy would help him make friends, that he needed as much help as he could, maybe she was onto something.
Hi Bradley. This is Jake. Let me know when you want to do that drink. I don’t start work until next week so currently free as a bird.
It’s not too late, and it’s been a couple of hours. He’s not going to play hard to get. He’s never considered himself hard to get when the guy is as attractive as Bradley is, and he’s never been one to play games or overthink setting up dates or hookups. He’s hoping this is maybe more than a hookup.
I’m free most evenings. Tomorrow? Dinner?
Jake grins, likes the idea of dinner even more than a drink, it’s a good sign; sends a message back, organizing a time but asking for recommendations of where they could go to eat.
…             …             …
They settle at a table and quickly peruse the menu before placing orders with the hovering waitstaff. They’ve made superficial small-talk about the weather and how Brisket is doing, but he’s hoping he can find out more about Jake himself.
“So you’re new to the area?”
“Uh yeah, I guess. I lived here a while back but am back for work.”
“And what do you do for work?”
“I’m in the Navy. An aviator,” Jake says, like he’s a little unsure.
“You’re shitting me…” Bradley says with a disbelieving laugh, because he’s had a guy tell him he was a naval aviator before. Except he hadn’t been and the lie had quickly bitten the other guy in the ass when Bradley had quickly realized and called him out on it. It had been a shame because Bradley had genuinely liked him.
                “Why would I lie?”
“Well, some guys think it’ll sound impressive…”
                “Isn’t it?”
“Well… maybe to some guys,” Bradley concedes.
                “Not you?”
“No. Not to me. I’m more impressed you adopted a rescue, travelled across country with it and care about your puppy than what you might or might not do for your work.”
“Most people care that I disappear for months on end. Or have a thing against the military in general.”
“Huh,” Bradley states, realizing that that was maybe where his hesitance had come from. “I’m used to people being away for long periods,” Bradley states. Jake raises an eyebrow. “Sorry. I’m just… I was a Navy brat. Sort of.”
                “Sort of?”
“Yeah. Grew up on bases, spent most of my life on them. We probably know some of the same people, if you’re actually a naval aviator…” Bradley says, still giving him an out, because maybe this guy is not realising the hole he’s dug.
                “How do you figure?”
“My dad was a naval aviator, and until very recently my godfather was also a naval aviator, although he’s recently retired. Although I don’t think the Navy will actually ever get rid of him. He’s pretty entrenched.”
                “Yeah, what’s his name?”
“Pete Mitchell,” Bradley provides, and Jake’s immediate response makes him relax a little. That’s definitely recognition of the name.
                “Maverick? Mav’s your godfather?”
Bradley opens his mouth, snaps it shut again. Not just recognition but more than that. He's calling him Mav. Of fucking course he knows Mav, and he hadn’t used his callsign so this guy is legitimately a naval aviator.
                “You know Mav huh?”
“Yeah. He’s… damn. He’s fucking insane but so good. He was brought in to train us and he’s just… that good.”
“Don’t let him hear you say that. His ego doesn’t need to be made any bigger.”
“He deserves his ego, he’s fucking legendary.”
                “You sound like a fan.”
“Yeah, I guess I am. He’s… worthy of fans.”
“Yeah well, he’s my godfather. So there you go.”
                “Wait, are you little goose?”
                “Oh god…” Bradley groans.
                “You are!”
“Yeah yeah… this is quickly losing the date vibe.”
“Sorry, I can bring it back to that,” Jake says, and his hand is suddenly resting on Bradley’s, warm and dry, fingers stroking the back of his hand.
“Yeah, think you better or you might strike out…”
“Wouldn’t want that…” Jake says, and his eyes are dark and amused and Bradley feels a little thrill at being the subject of his intense gaze.
“So, you’re an actual naval aviator.”
“Yeah, no wonder you aren’t impressed if you grew up hearing about Mav’s exploits. Fuck.”
“Trust me, I find you plenty impressive.”
“Good to know,” Jake says, his smile clearly pleased. “I’m one of the new flight instructors. Have a three-year stint here and Kingsville unless they need me for something special.”
                “Nice. Do you like teaching?”
Their conversation changes as they talk more, discussing what their upbringings were like, their families, respective careers, all of Bradley’s current animals, favorite food and drink. It’s easy, their humor similar and gently teasing at times, making laughter come easily. It’s one of the best first-dates he’s ever had and it’s not until there’s a polite cough that he looks up to see the rest of the restaurant is empty, the waitstaff having clearly cleared up and are now just waiting on them. A quick glance at his phone tells him it’s nearly midnight and his mind bugs out a little.
“Shit, sorry. I guess we got caught up talking.”
                “It’s fine.”
He grabs the bill, leaving a generous tip for keeping them and tells Jake he can grab the bill next time, which has him murmuring next time huh under his breath, close to Bradley’s ear as they walk close together as they step outside. There are only two cars left in the lot and he guesses the staff must park somewhere else. He walks Jake to his car, only a few yards from his own truck.
“I had a really good time tonight…” Bradley starts.
“Me too. Wouldn’t mind doing it again…”
                “What are you doing Saturday?”
“Having dinner with this hot guy I just met…”
“What a weird coincidence, so am I…”
He shifts forward, eyes searching Jake’s face to make sure there isn’t any hesitation before placing a gentle kiss on Jake’s mouth. He pulls back slowly, his lips quirking in amusement when Jake quickly gives him another kiss back, slightly firmer and longer and he feels the flicker of warm anticipation come to life in his belly. Potential something.
“Don’t suppose I can tempt you to come back to my place?”
“I’m definitely tempted, but I’ve got to get home. Dogs.”
                “Oh yeah, of course.”
“Bring Brisket on Saturday. She can meet the pack…”
He doesn’t want to mention that Jake could also bring all her gear, as well as a spare toothbrush for himself.
…             …             …
They’ve been messaging since dinner on Tuesday and Jake feels completely settled into his house now, he’s driven to both Corpus Christi and Kingsville to familiarize himself with the routes. He’s taken Brisket to her first puppy obedience class, figured out the most convenient grocery store. All week he’s been looking forward to Saturday, packs some things and leaves them in has car, so if he needs any of it they’ll be close at hand. If it’s effectively a sleepover backpack for him and Brisket that’s between him and Brisket.
He pulls into the drive of the house address Bradley had given him and looks at the tall fence that surrounds the back garden, can already hear barking and he looks down at Brisket who is sitting there, ears pricking forward at the sound of other dogs. He gets out, grabs her bag of stuff and carries her toward the house, glad she at least seems curious about the barking rather than terrified. He rings the bell, eyes widening at the sudden increase in barking and then Bradley is there, smiling at him behind the wavy glass of the door. Immediately the barking ceases, although there is a small yap, and then the door opens.
                “Hi. Come on in.”
“Hi. Uh. Are you sure she’s going to be okay?”
“Trust me, if anything she’ll rule them with an iron paw… feel free to put her down.”
Jake doesn’t particularly want to, but Bradley is looking expectant, as are the five dogs who are all sitting and waiting obediently. He knows they aren’t all Bradley’s dogs permanently, that he’s fostering three and dog-sitting one, but he can’t remember which one is which. Most of the dogs are normal sized, one is huge though, and he wishes he remembered which one Bradley said was his. Then a cat walks in and insolently stalks in front of the line of dogs and collapses at Bradley’s feet.
“Curtiss,” Bradley states, waving a hand at the cat with a sardonic sigh. The fact that none of the dogs have moved, except one, the largest, whose tail had started wagging enthusiastically makes Jake feel more confident about putting Brisket down. She is nowhere near as disciplined as any of the other dogs. Hell, the cat is probably more disciplined than Brisket, despite the fact it is a cat and takes direction from no one. Understandably she runs from him to Bradley, then to the cat, then back to Jake, then takes turns running to and around each dog and prancing playfully, like she expects them to play with her.
“I’m going to give them the release signal and it’s going to get chaotic, but just trust me okay? They’re well trained.”
He believes it, but sure enough in less than a second there’s barking again, six dogs suddenly all barking and then they’re running and Brisket is chasing after them and Bradley grins at him.
“I gave them the signal for outside. Brewster is too big to not be well trained, and he generally gets all other dogs quickly following his lead.”
“What kind of dog is he again?”
“A Leonberger. He was surrendered to a local shelter because the owners couldn’t afford to keep him. He eats a lot. He went unadopted because of the costs associated with feeding him, raft of potential health issues as he aged and because he had zero training. I’ve had him for five years now.”
“He’s massive,” Jake says, and he knows he’s stating the fucking obvious but when Bradley had said he had just the one big dog, he had never imagined this. He’s pretty sure Brisket is the size of one of his paws.
“Yep. But as I said, he’s very well trained. I work with him every day as well. Come on, I promised you dinner.”
                “You cooked?”
“I did, but it’s only one of the five meals I can make, so don’t go thinking I’m accomplished or anything.”
                “As long as it’s edible.”
He takes the offered beer, watches as Bradley dishes out some pasta dish along with some garlic bread and then directs him to sit at a high bench on bar stools rather than at the dining table.
“We don’t want Brewster putting his mouth into our food, at least up here we have a slightly better chance of protecting it.”
“I thought you said he was really well trained?”
“Not when I’m eating food. All bets are off if I’m eating.”
Jake laughs and just like it did on Tuesday, conversation flows easily. Bradley can follow his work talk easily, obviously used to Navy talk because of Mav, his own work stories are equal parts hilarious and terrifying. He’s attentive, giving Jake his full attention and he finds he likes that a lot more than he thought he would. They finish dinner, Bradley quickly stacking his dishwasher before feeding the dogs. He watches as Bradley holds their attention before giving them the signal that they can eat and he can’t help but be impressed. He’s pretty sure Brisket is only going to have to look at him and he’s going to cave to her every whim. He does try and look like he’s not a complete soft touch in front of Bradley as he feeds her, but he doesn’t think he succeeds.
They go into the back lawn and throw balls for the dogs, starting an elaborate game of keep-away for about twenty minutes before Bradley offers him dessert. He wants to ask if it’s Bradley himself on offer but doesn’t, instead takes the bowl of fruit and ice-cream and makes himself comfortable on the sofa, apparently safe from Brewster as he’s afraid of the scent of fruit. There’s a collection of boardgames, none of which he’s familiar with so he asks about them and learns that it’s another of Bradley’s hobbies.
When they’re finished he follows Bradley back to the kitchen, notices it’s much quieter, almost dark outside and there’s no more barking and he looks around, suddenly anxious.
“She’s just over there…” Bradley says, his lips twitching with a smile and Jake’s not sure if he’s laughing at him or… oh. That’s fucking cute. Brisket is curled up on Brewster, she’s somehow managed to climb up the almost mountain like body and curl up on top of him. He grabs his phone and snaps a photo, and then a few more because one is never going to be enough.
“She’s all tuckered out… You going to wake her up?”
Jake looks up at Bradley’s tone, and his eyes are hooded and Jake feels an immediate jolt of arousal spark through him.
“No… she looks far too comfortable. Think I need to go to bed too…”
                “Yeah?”
                “Definitely. Show me the way…”
…             …             …
They’ve not talked about what they’re doing, not in the actual physical and practical sense. Not in terms of sex and he’s definitely been raised in a house with the rule of if you can’t talk about it you shouldn’t be doing it. Which actually only goes so far when you really don’t want to share details of your sex life with your surrogate parents, or hear anything about theirs. He does agree in principle though, and there’s only one way to find out. Conversation hasn’t been difficult between them so he doesn’t expect this to be awkward either. He shifts slightly so he can rest his head on his hand while his other hand runs up and down from Jake’s shoulder to his hip.
                “Anything you don’t like?”
                “Uh…”
“Anything you do like? Or prefer? I’m easy…”
                “Lucky me.”
                “Can I touch?”
                “Yeah…course.”
Bradley lets his hand rub Jake’s cock through his underwear as he kisses him, enjoys the feel of Jake’s body moving against his hand, body and mouth. Jake’s free hand runs through the hair on his chest, then his shoulders, down his arm before there are blunt nails digging into his ass; then finally a large palm rubs his cock far too fleetingly to be anything more than a frustrating taste before it starts back at the beginning.
                “This okay?”
“Yeah, look, if you do something I don’t like I’ll say something okay?”
“And if I do something you like?”
“Actually, you could work on that a little bit more…”
He kisses him hard then, grinds their hips together and palms an ass cheek in his hand, holding Jake tight against him.
                “Yeah, fuck…”
He shifts, pushes Jake back to lie on his back and then straddles one of Jake’s thighs. He runs both hands down Jake’s naked chest, leans down to kiss him again, hands on either side of Jake’s shoulders. Jake looks good, is confident with it, Bradley can’t help but find it attractive. He shifts a little, Jake’s hands are all over, hips lifting up to try and rub against him and Bradley would tease him for being impatient but he is starting to feel the same.
Their breathing is getting shallower, and he kisses over Jake’s collar bone, licks a little into the slight dip in his clavicle and assumes it’s a little ticklish from the way Jake laughs a little. He runs a hand down Jake’s side, his mouth moving down his chest but his eyes are on Jake’s neck and mouth, muscles taut and mouth open as he breathes harshly. He’s clearly given up waiting for Bradley to pay attention to his dick, has his own hand rubbing himself, occasionally detouring to rub Bradley’s dick as well. He moves his mouth over Jake’s pectorals, sucks gently at one nipple, wanting to know if this is something Jake –
“Fucking hell,” Jake exclaims, body jerking up as if electrified and Bradley pulls back immediately.
                “Good or bad?”
                “Good. Do it again …”
Bradley grins and seals his mouth around his right nipple again and sucks, flicking his tongue over the harder nub of flesh in his mouth and Jake’s entire body arches again and Bradley can’t believe how good he looks. How good he feels.
“Fuck, why does that feel so good?”
                “Lots of nerve endings…”
“It was a fucking rhetorical question…”
He snorts, lowers his mouth back and presses down with his lower body at the same time, wants to give something for Jake to grind against, push him toward climax. Jake is reading his body easily, his hips angling slightly to thrust against the juncture of his thigh and hip, hands both on Bradley’s lower back urging him closer, pulling him down and Bradley lets a little more of his weight press down. The moan Jake lets out is gratifying and he reaches a hand between them and presses harder, feels the dampness from where he’s leaking pre-come.
                “Lube?”
“No, I like it a little, uh, rough… you go ahead though, if you want…”
                “Nope, I’m all good…”
His lips are red and swollen and Bradley wants to make him look like this all the time. He runs a finger under the elastic of the underwear and then Jake’s hips are up and he shifts back and out of the way. Watches as Jake pushes them down and he can’t actually get them off with the way Bradley is half-kneeling over him, one thigh between Jake’s legs. He shuffles down the bed. Drags his hands down Jake’s legs, tugs the underwear off before moving back up, placing gentle kisses on knees, thighs and hips before he licks up the length of Jake’s cock, kisses the head and lets his moustache scrape against the skin gently. Jake is shifting, clearly wanting to move more but holding himself back and he’s got far too much control for Bradley’s liking.
He wraps his hand around Jake’s cock, a little firmer than he would usually, but Jake had said he likes it a little rough. He jerks it steadily, watches as Jake’s eyes squeeze shut, mouth opening in a silent gasp and he keeps going. It’s been a while, but he knows how to multitask and he wants to hear and see what will happen next. Knows getting Jake off is likely going to make him come as well. He settles his mouth over the same nipple he’d sucked before, and it’s a little pink, and he sucks again. The resulting words from Jake’s mouth are nonsensical in between loud gasps for air and what he recognizes as his name. He doesn’t say anything, can’t really, with his mouth busy sucking intently. His hand has sped up and he’s resting a fair bit of his weight on Jake’s leg, partly pinning Jake beneath him and his cock is hard and leaking. One of Jake’s hands is fisted in his hair, holding Bradley to his chest and then his whole body goes taut like a rubber band being stretched before it snaps back and then Jake is coming all over his hand and he gentles the sucking to more gentler licks and swirls of his tongue because it’s most likely going to be a little bruised.
                 “Ungh… fuck…”
He doesn’t bother moving very much, just shoves his own underwear down enough to take his cock in his hand and jerk himself off, hard and desperate to come, no need to try and make it last longer or hold back. He moves enough to kiss Jake and he feels a hand try to come and help him and while he appreciates the intent it isn’t something that is even a consideration right now, he’s too close and he doesn’t need much…
                “Bradley…”
Yeah, that’ll do it. He comes with a groan, his come joining Jake’s on his stomach. He rests his forehead against Jake’s neck while he tries to steady his breathing. Their breathing is the only sound he can hear outside of his body, heartbeat pounding in his ears, waits a moment before he lets out a long shuddery breath and kisses Jake on the chin.
                “You okay?”
“What’s that saying, ask a stupid question?”
                “Get a stupid answer…”
                “Yeah.”
He grabs some tissues, passes the box to Jake and they wipe themselves clean and he feels fantastic, hopes Jake feels similarly. He kisses him, takes the dirty tissues from his unresisting fingers and lies down beside him.
                “Stupidly okay. You?”
“Yeah. That sounds about right. Damned good for a first run…”
“Mmm. Imagine what it will be like when we’ve got a few more test runs behind us.”
                “Always room for improvement.”
“That’s very true… I’m just going to go and let the dogs out but I’ll be right back. If you wanted to stay that is?”
“Yeah, staying sounds good. Just… uh. Brisket normally sleeps on the bed with me.”
“Think she’s found a new bed.”
“Lucky for me I won’t be lonely I guess.”
                Bradley grins.
…             …             …
2 MONTHS LATER
He’s running a little late, but not by a lot. He’s messaged both Jake and Mav to say he’s running a bit behind due to a surgery requiring a bit more time. He walks into the restaurant and spies them sitting at a booth near the back, tells the hostess he’s with them and raises his hand in greeting as Mav is standing to give him a hug.
                “Bradley!”
“Hey Mav, good to see you,” Bradley says, returning the tight embrace.
“Good to see you too. You’re looking good. This is… Jake.”
Bradley leans down and gives Jake a kiss, takes his time and licks into his mouth.
                “Hi.”
“I hope you don’t meet everyone that way…”
“Only my boyfriend Mav,” Bradley says, laughing. “You didn’t tell him?” he asks Jake.
“Nope, one of my joys in life is keeping him on his toes,” Jake says, grinning at them both as they sit. Mav is rolling his eyes and huffing, but Bradley can tell he’s a little pleased. At least he knows now why Bradley really didn’t care about him inviting someone else along to dinner.
“How long has this been going on?” Mav asks, looking between them with interest.
                “Couple of months,” Bradley provides.
“You move fast,” Mav says to Jake dryly.
“What can I say? I know a good thing when I see one.”
                “Plus Brisket loves me.”
                “She does have exceptional taste.”
“Much like her owner. Although don’t you get the names mixed up? Brisket, Bradley and Brewster? There’s definitely a theme there…”
Jake blinks, looks at Bradley and he just shrugs.
“We could get a couple more pets and name them Brownie and Bruno and you’d have the whole set.”
                Jake laughs, eye brow quirks;
                “Sounds like a plan.”

Tornado Warning
Pairing: 5SOS ot4 friendship Rating: teen and up Key Tags: Alternate Universe - Roommates/Housemates, Bad Weather, Ice Cream Word Count: around 2,555 Read on AO3
Summary:
"Tornado warning!" he calls, vaulting down the last few stairs and grabbing Luke's arm. "We have to get to a safe place! Into the bathtub!" "Uh," Michael says, watching Ashton haul Luke towards the bathroom before he gets his bearings enough to speak. "We should get to the basement, actually." Ashton stops abruptly enough that Calum runs into him. "The basement?" "Yeah," Michael says, slinging his backpack over his shoulder and grabbing his phone. "It's like none of you have been in a tornado warning before." or: Michael and his housemates are caught in a tornado warning during their summer internship.
Michael stands transfixed as rain pelts the windows, creating a thick sheet of water outside that he can barely see in the darkness from the cloud cover.  Lightning flashes, illuminating the water rushing in the street, turning the pavement into a river as the rain continues to fall in droves.  A second later a rumble of thunder sounds above him, loud and booming enough to shake the old house.  His heart thumps, excitement starting to pool in his stomach.
He fucking loves storms.  Even though the house they were provided for this internship is older and ricketier than the one he left at home, he's excited to hunker down and spend the evening relaxing guilt-free rather than running errands like he had originally planned.  He and his housemates have been working themselves to the bone this summer, and part of him is thankful for the excuse to do nothing for a few hours, even if the tasks he’s putting off will only be worse once the storm clears.
His ears pick up the faint echo of sirens a second later, the high-pitched wails floating above the cacophony of the rain to reach him.  His phone beeps, the abrasive weather alert tone ringing through the living room, and a second later footsteps thunder down the stairs.
"Tornado!" Luke calls, landing hard with both feet on the wood floor at the bottom of the stairs, sliding in his socks and grabbing on to the railing to keep his balance.  "My phone says there's a tornado!"
"It's a warning, it might be radar indicated instead of an actual sighting," Michael says.  Luke looks at him with wide eyes, hair in disarray and worn t-shirt making him look smaller and younger than usual.  He doesn't have any time to respond before Ashton appears at the top of the stairs with Calum right behind him.
"Tornado warning!" he calls, vaulting down the last few stairs and grabbing Luke's arm.  "We have to get to a safe place!  Into the bathtub!"
"Uh," Michael says, watching Ashton haul Luke towards the bathroom before he gets his bearings enough to speak.  "We should get to the basement, actually."
Ashton stops abruptly enough that Calum runs into him.
"The basement?"
"Yeah," Michael says, slinging his backpack over his shoulder and grabbing his phone.  "Come on.  Bring something to keep you occupied."
"There's no time!" Ashton insists, grabbing Calum when he starts to head back upstairs.  He drags both him and Luke towards the basement stairs, and Michael rolls his eyes up to the ceiling as another flash of lightning flares in his periphery.
"We don't have to run," Michael says, following them at an even pace.
"It's a fucking tornado, Mike!" Ashton yells.  "Get your ass down here!"
Michael makes it to the basement just in time to hear Luke ask "Are we going to die?"
"Of course not," he frowns, setting down his backpack near the couch.  The basement is going to be converted into another bedroom this fall so the small arts center they work for can house more interns next year, but for now it simply has brown carpet, two second-hand couches, and a TV set that they rarely have time to watch.  It’s open and drafty, and part of him is worried about unexpected leaking with the amount of rain outside, but it’ll do for their shelter.
"Sit down," he says, motioning to the couches.  "Get comfortable so we can wait it out.  It's like none of you have been in a tornado warning before."
"I haven't," Calum says, flopping down in the corner of the opposite couch.  "I live on the East Coast, dude."
"I only remember one as a kid, and we didn't have a basement where we lived," Ashton says, taking the spot next to him.  Michael blinks, then looks at Luke, who shakes his head.
"Oh," he says.
Logically he knew that there were differences between living on one of the coasts and living in the Midwest, but tornado drills and warnings have been such a normalized part of his life that it never occurred to him they wouldn't be part of his fellow interns'.
Luke flinches at another rumble of thunder.
"It's going to be fine," Michael says confidently, pulling him down onto the couch.  "We get tornado warnings all the time where I live and they've always just been warnings for me.  Even if the wind gets bad enough to topple some trees upstairs, we'll be safe down here.  Let's turn the news on and hear what the weatherman has to say."
They have to dig in the couch cushions for the remote.  Ashton is the one who finds it and holds it up with a noise of triumph, and Michael hopes that the somewhat spotty signal they get down here holds on despite the weather.  He sighs in relief once the weather radar fills the screen, even if it's fuzzy with gray pixels.
"See?" he says, listening to the weatherman describe the path of the storm, which counties are under a thunderstorm warning, and the danger of the high winds.  "He said they haven't officially had a tornado touch down yet, and the radar prediction would put it south of us.  We just have to hunker down here and wait for the storm to pass to be sure."
"Okay," Luke says, pulling his knees to his chest and wrapping his arms around them.  Michael looks at Calum and Ashton, both of them equally tense from their own precarious perches on the couch, and makes a decision.
"I'm going to be back in thirty seconds."
"Michael--" Ashton tries.
"You can time me if you want!" he says.  "Thirty seconds.  I'm just going up to the kitchen.  A tornado isn't going to suddenly materialize that quickly."
He's on the stairs before he finishes talking, taking them two at a time.  He knows that he'll be fine up here for a bit longer, but there's no use stressing the other three out by lingering.  He finds what he needs in the freezer and cupboards quickly, bundles everything into his arms, and hopes he doesn't accidentally drop and break any of the bowls on the stairs.
Ashton waits for him at the base and frowns when he sees Michael carefully descend, arms laden with bowls, spoons, chocolate sauce, sprinkles, an ice cream scoop, and the gallon of chocolate chip ice cream they bought last week.
"Really?" he asks, taking the bowls and spoons before Michael loses his grip and sends them tumbling to the ground.
"I'm fine, see?" he says, plopping down on the floor in front of the couches.  "Besides, ice cream is an essential part of every tornado warning.  One of my earliest memories is eating ice cream during a tornado warning, actually.  It was one in the middle of the night, so my parents had to wake me up to get me downstairs.  I just remember being excited I got to stay up late and have ice cream."
"That's sweet," Ashton says, expression softening.  "Smart, too."
"It's hard to be scared when you have ice cream," Calum says, sliding down onto the carpet next to him.  He tugs at Luke's ankle until he uncurls and joins them on the floor, completing their circle around the bowls.  Michael cracks open the tub of ice cream and dishes it up, handing the bowls out as he finishes so everyone can add their preferred amount of sauce and sprinkles.  The weatherman steadily reports in the background, deterring against driving and repeating which counties are under severe weather warnings, but otherwise it's quiet.  Michael can still hear rain and thunder, but it's muffled underground.
He gives Luke an extra scoop and a smile, because he eats the most out of all of them and seems the most nervous, although Ashton's head keeps whipping towards the walls with every rumble of thunder, breaking his eye contact with the tv's weather radar.   For a few minutes they eat in silence, only the clink of their spoons against the bowls and drone of the tv filling the dead air, and Michael watches the other three become more and more anxious as the weather man gives tips for how to protect yourself from severe weather and continues to repeat the counties under the warning.
"So..." he says tentatively.  "How's it going?"
They blink at him.
"Well, Michael, there's a tornado," Ashton says.  Michael rolls his eyes.
"The weatherman says there hasn't been an official touchdown yet.  I'm just trying to take everyone's mind off of it."
"Does that go along with the ice cream for tornado warnings?" Luke asks.  "Is that what you did as a kid?"
Michael tries to remember anything more about that specific night.  He can see flashes of his dad in his white sleeping shirt and his mom's blue pj pants, and he remembers wrapping himself up in the lion blanket that's still folded on the back of the couch of his basement back home, even though it's significantly more worn now.
He doesn't remember what they talked about, but he remembers that he wasn't scared of the tornado, even with the storm outside and the tv turned to the constant red weather radar.
"I think so," he says.  "Probably.  It's a really early memory, so I don't remember what we talked about, but I wasn't scared.  I assume they distracted me somehow."
"Yeah, parents are good at that," Ashton says, picking at his ice cream.  "I remember when I was really little, my mom was always distracting me with music.  She would listen to a lot of sad songs, especially in my earliest memories right after my dad left, but she knew I loved music, and she'd listen to a lot of rock songs, too.  I remember sitting in my car seat when I was really tiny and us belting out "Tonight Tonight" by the Smashing Pumpkins, even though I didn't know the lyrics, let alone understand them.  That didn't matter, though.  Mom liked the song, and singing it together made her smile, and I liked when Mom smiled."
"That's cute," Calum says sincerely, taking a break from stirring his ice cream and sauce together to give Ashton a smile.
"I can't remember shit about anything before kindergarten," Luke says.  "My earliest memory is from my cousin's wedding.  I really wanted to dance with her because she had a big pretty dress, even though I didn't really know her because we lived far away.  I can't remember anything about the wedding or what song we were dancing to, but I remember that my mom had to ask her to dance with me because I was too shy to do it myself."
Michael tries to imagine a tiny Ashton singing along to his mom, or a tiny Luke dancing with his cousin on her wedding day.  He can't quite manage it, both of them still unfamiliar enough that he can't picture them in any way except exactly as they are now.  In his mind, young Ashton still has a bandana around his forehead to keep his curls at bay.  Young Luke is unrealistically tall and gangly.  Even though they've been living and working together for a few weeks and there's a deep sense of camaraderie, he's barely scratched the surface of who they are.
"What about you, Calum?" Ashton asks.  "Do you have any early memories you want to share?"
Calum hums around his spoon.  They patiently wait for him to swallow, listening to the weather report.
"My grandma had this little chocolate fountain that she'd hook up when we were over sometimes.  We would dip fruit or other food in, and my sister accidentally clogged it by dropping a mini dill pickle in," he says.  "I was little enough that my parents had to help me to ensure I didn't drop anything in, either, and I was so upset that we had to stop so someone could dislodge it and fish it out.  We talk about it every year when we use the fountain again."
"Mmm, chocolate," Luke hums dreamily.  Michael pushes the ice cream and chocolate sauce towards him so he can dish up another bowl.
"How many siblings do you have?" Ashton asks.  "Is it just your sister?"
"Yeah, just an older sister for me," Calum says.  "What about you guys?"
"I'm an only child," Michael says.
"I have two younger siblings, a brother and a sister.  Lauren is 15, Harry is 11," Ashton replies.  They all turn to Luke.
"Uh, two older brothers," he says, carefully pouring more chocolate sauce on his new stack of ice cream scoops.  "They're absolute asses, but I miss them.  It's weird being a time zone away."
Michael hums but stays quiet.  Although he's only about an hour from home for the internship, he was a few states away for college.  He doesn't regret flying the nest for school, but it was a difficult adjustment when he had barely been out of state before then.
"Time zones suck," Calum says vehemently.  "I went to soccer camp in Brazil one summer and I could never figure out what time it was back home when I tried to call."
"You went to Brazil?" Michael asks.  "That's fucking sick!  What was it like?"
Calum launches into a story about his time there, and then conversation flows quickly, with everyone passing around stories and anecdotes about themselves like they've been doing it for years.  Michael learns about Ashton's cat allergy, the time Luke broke his arm, and Calum's favorite birthday present, and he learns even more by watching them as they continue to switch topics at rapid-fire.  He learns that Ashton is the best of them at keeping a straight face while he's telling a joke, and Calum can't control his facial expressions at all.  Luke keeps his limbs tucked close to him like he's afraid to take up space, but Calum is far more comfortable spread out.  All three of them have a good taste in music, and all three of them have absolutely insane opinions on other things that they'll defend to the death.  At one point they start assigning each other different characters in A Bug’s Life.  Michael doesn’t know how they got on the subject, he just knows that his stomach hurts from laughing so hard.
Michael thought that they were friends before this, but on second thought that might not have been true.  They were definitely friendly, and they've had long conversations before about things besides the house meal schedule and how terrible this internship is, but this feels like they crossed a bridge.  Now, Michael can clearly envision himself calling one of them to catch up when they're back at their separate college campuses, or making plans to meet up for a weekend or two.  He thinks this friendship could be something that carries on even when they're not all stuck in the same place together.
None of them notice when the tv switches back to its regular scheduled programming, the weather crisis long since averted.  They continue to talk and laugh until the leftover ice cream in the tub turns to lukewarm liquid and the rain outside lightens to a gentle patter, safe with each other in the basement, drowning out everything else with their laughter.

1,2 & 20 for the asks?❤️‍🩹
I'm putting in a cut because it got long and rambly again because i'm appearently unable to skip my tangets and it's fucking sappy as shit because i'm emotional these days.
under the cut: song of the year, album of the year, what i learned this year
1, Song of the year? As much as i want to pick something from TMBTE i have to go with Wake the Dead by blessthefall. I listened the crap out of it since it's release and it very well deserves a shoutout.
2, Album of the year? TMBTE. No question there. Not just because it is and incredible album but it means so much more.
Without it so many things would not have happend to me this year. I like ST before but if there is not TMBTE there is no tour and if there was no tour i wouldn't have seen them live and gone off the deep end. If i wouldn't have seen them live i would not have met a bunch of very nice people who were spending their days in que as well. If i've not met them i probably never would have even touched the fandom.
But there was a new album, there was a tour, i did met amazing people and i dipped my toes into fandom spaces. And what that, or more accurately you guys gave me is what probably makes this album even more special in my eyes. Because even online i usually feel so out of place and if i do more than 2 post a day i'm convinced i'm the most annyoing mf to ever exist.
I don't want to sound too sappy and make it sound dramatic and shit but like.. the year i've had before this and the beginning of this one sent me on the gorund so hard.. So the small things that came with being in ST spaces just kept me going and got me up higher and higher and the crowning on that is this tumblr circle. And now i'm actually don't have waking up in the mornings.
Small things do matter so incredibly much for someone like me, who is emotionally an equivalent of a lone sad cat trying to find shelted in a rainstorm in a sopping wet cardboard box.
So my answer is TMBTE.
3, What’s something you learned this year? What have i learned? Oh boy.. i learned a lot about myself actually. I won't go into detail because that would be long and an entirely different conversation but there was a lot of self reflection and new perspectives and methods and stuff to manage the jumble that is my mind.
I also on a pretty good track on learning both reading and writing the ST runes thanks to the ever lovely Misha @thejawsoffate. Arguably i'm far better at reading it already than writing but i'll get there one day.
I also learned that you can't really forget drawing. You need some time to warm it back up but once you did a couple of fumbling attempts the knowledge starts to take shape again. I just looked at the phone i'm using for taking pics of my drawings and it has a separate folder for just art and if i also count the tiny token pieces individually besides the small offerings, i did over a 100 pieces since the end of november which is insane to think about, especially in relation to the fact that it's safe to say that in year i have not drawn more then six pieces.
So yeah. There was stuff? Sorry for making it this long again. 🤦🏻

I, for one, have been trying to wrap my head around the importance of the paintings shown throughout Goncharov. I'll have to dust off my Baroque art history notes for specifics, but I'm almost 100% certain that most of them are Caravaggios. Caravaggio ALSO spent time in Naples in the end of his life and more importantly, he was in Naples because he'd been RUN OUT OF ROME. No, he wasn't trying to gain a foothold in Cold War era Italy, but he was trying to start a new life - or at least salvage the old one - with shadows, real and metaphysical, right behind him.
Talking generally, the use of Caravaggio in a mafia film makes sense. Tenebrism lends itself perfectly to the genre. You throw characters and scenes into intense light and shadow, and the tension practically builds itself. There are so many moments where the lighting choices are full of the warm light sources ao often seen in Caravaggio works, light that was very often indicative of God. But there are a few works that stand out.
When we first meet Goncharov, you know, the scene in the study where he introduces himself, in the back is this painting:
Tumblr media
That's Cardsharps from 1594. It's an early Caravaggio of two men scamming a rich youth. It's a piece of set dressing that shows us at a glance what Goncharov is: a crook, a villain, someone not to be trusted. But upon further analysis, questions are raised. Is Goncharov the youth or the young crook? Is the older figure his father or himself later in life looking back on what he could've done differently? If Goncharov is one character, which one is Andrey? Who is being taken in, and who is doing the taking? And we, the audience, can see what the crooks are doing as we can see the machinations of the film as it will progress. But we can do nothing to help the youth, just as we are powerless to stop the steady march towards the final act.
Later, we see this Medusa associated with Sofia:
Tumblr media
Sofia, who was never protected and now must protect herself. Sofia, who was saved and cursed over and over by the men around her. Sofia, who perhaps mightve found love, or at least a sisterhood, with Katya. But this image is of Caravaggios own face as the head of Medusa, a move that supposedly makes him immune to her gaze. Is this a moment of empowerment for Sofia? Or is this another example of men taking something from her? Knowing what we do about the fate of her relationship with Katya, is this superimposition of Caravaggio's face a stand in for Goncharov's place in their relationship? Is Medusa truly Sofia, or is Medusa Goncharov, or someone else entirely? Does is minimize Sofia's character to even ask if Medusa could be anyone else?
But the one that REALLY gets me, is from Goncharov's lone church scene.
Tumblr media
This is The Seven Works of Mercy in Pio Monte della Misericordia in Naples. It can be seen as Goncharov and Andrey walk through the church, barely speaking. What makes this work important is a) the fact that Caravaggio painted it in 1607 while he was on the run from basically a mob out for his head and b) the subject matter. The seven mercies are: bury the dead, visit the imprisoned, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, clothe the naked, visit the sick, and refresh the thirsty. Let's take them in smaller chunks.
Refresh the thirsty: could this be a comment on the alcoholism present in the film, both with regar to Goncharov's past and his current present?
Visit the sick/visit the imprisoned: who in this film isn't sick of something? Who doesn't have some spiritual ailment that they are trying to heal with the presence of the other? Who isn't imprisoned in some way? Katya and Goncharov in their marriage, Goncharov and Andrey in their history and feelings, Katya and Sofia in their male dominated world, all of the in the tragedy of the narrative.
Feed the hungry: all of this was brought about by a hunger for power, for expansion, for victory. But at what cost? Whose hunger wins out, and at the expense of which of the other characters?
Shelter the homeless/clothe the naked: perhaps a comment of Katya's desire to raise Sofia from her circumstances, perhaps a comment on how all of the characters are adrift beyond their homeland searching for something they can never have.
Bury the dead: the fact that this painting is shown so close to the end of the film is no accident. We as the audience know what is in the works, we know that this can only end one way. Even some of the characters know it. But later, when Goncharov is dying, does he think of this painting? Does he wonder if he deserves mercy? Does he wonder who will bury him? His body will probably be thrown in the sea and forgotten about; those left will forget him. But we won't. The audience won't. We are the ones who will grant him this last mercy. We will bury our dead. We will bury him.

The images are (by row, top to bottom, left to right): Chance+Sham, Chance+Sham, Capricia+Gwain+Andromache+Tzu kinda, Thessalyn, Chance+Sham (2015-2021 art improvement meme), Fenrah, my tortle from DnD, Basil, and finally Chance (again). All images are cropped; full versions on my website, which is linked at the bottom of this post if you want to skip to that!
So, hi there! I used to post a bunch of art related to Abigail Hilton’s novels here, primarily those set in the world of Panamindorah; the Pirates of Wefrivain series, and the Prophet of Panamindorah and associated short stories. You can scroll back if you want to see that, but it’s all quite old and not very good. Still, I have unpassword-protected this blog, so you may view it if you so wish.
I no longer post on Tumblr, but I thought I’d let any interested fans (of Abbie, not me) know that I have a website I update occasionally where I share fanart of her works (alongside DnD art, original art, and works for other assorted fandoms — it’s primarily Panamindorah/Abbie art, though). The above artworks are (cropped) examples of what’s on the site. Each image comes with an associated mini-ramble (much shorter than a real ramble).
Please note that Neocities free accounts have some bandwidth issues; the introduction on my art page explains a little more of what to expect from a site like this (in general, this is very much ‘amateur, free, static’ web design, as opposed to something professional. tl;dr: it loads like shit. You may find that charming, you may not).
I also have a Dreamwidth, where one can leave anonymous (or logged-in) comments regarding my art, or start a conversation (you don’t have to care about my art to talk to me), and where I plan to post rambles (many of which will be related to Abbie’s works...again, primarily those set in Panamindorah, and to be quite honest, mostly Prophet of Panamindorah...I’m a Chance Windar man, myself). I’m not a prolific poster, so if this sounds interesting, but the idea of being flooded with art and rambles doesn’t, fear not. Although, if you like people who make things with great speed, uhhhh... (creeps back into boggy, slow-paced swampland). Can’t provide, don’t plan to.
Please note that this is not a portfolio-style website. WIPs, unfinished works, scribbles, doodles, and other scraps find their way onto my website, alongside more polished/complete/almost-complete works. I like that sort of thing, but you might not. There is also an on-site blog, although it’s mostly for ‘assorted nothings’. Lengthy entries will probably end up on Dreamwidth.
My second note is that there are (or will be) three art pages; the first is mostly SFW, although there is mild shelt (or other ‘fantastical people with no obvious genitalia’) nudity, kissing, and cuddling. The second page has more sensual or explicit works. The third page will be for (if I find the courage) more kinky, dark, or violent works. The whole site is technically Chose Not To Warn, but most adults should not have too much trouble browsing the main art page (and probably the first of the explicit pages). My website is intended primarily for adults. Links to the more explicit pages are marked as such, so those who aren’t interested should be able to avoid them easily (the third page doesn’t even exist yet).
Both my website and my Dreamwidth have RSS feeds. The blog on Abbie’s website also has an RSS feed, which can be useful if, like me, newsletters and your email go together about as well as oil and water.
Anyhow, links!
My Website (links directly to the main art page)
My Dreamwidth (this links directly to the journal entry for commenting)
About RSS feeds
More about RSS feeds
My Android RSS feeder (you do not need to use this, it’s just an example)
My Website’s RSS feed (you copy and paste these urls into your RSS feeder)
My Dreamwidth’s RSS feed (ditto above)
Abbie’s blog’s RSS feed; her newsletter is mirrored here for those who have trouble with email newsletters. (ditto above)
That’s all. As said, I don’t intend to return to Tumblr. I just wanted folks to know that other Abigail Hilton/Panamindorah fans exist out there. I know this website is very into Hunters Unlucky (sorry, I’m very bad at drawing animals; I do enjoy the books) so I should warn all you lovely folks that I don’t make much on that front. Maybe one day, though? I should be drawing more than Chance Windar and Sham Ausla (but Chance Windar and Sham Ausla have my heart). I suppose characters who aren’t animals (shelts are fine) are far more likely to show up, in the end.
May you all be happy and well!

7. how are you and your muse different?
I could lists a jillion ways we are similiar but hmmm...how are we different... Hilda is, even though she hates to admit it, hella fucking strong.  I am not.  At all.  Not even a little bit.  These are actual noodle arms right here.  I could never dream of swinging around a big ol’ axe.  We both do love making things but we kind of go opposites on the things we make.  Hilda mentions hating sewing to Mercedes but I would much rather do that as opposed to Hilda who prefers the accessories.  That’s something that intimidates me to know end.  We also had parents with very different parenting styles which led to some pretty different world views.  Hilda was shelted by rich bougie family and ended up with a very narrow idea of the world.  My parents on the other hand are super liberal and encouraged me and my sister to appreciate diversity and shit.
9. best scene featuring your muse? (chapter, film, episode)
Oh there are so many good ones.  The Claude supports are great.  When she cries over the camel story?  Fucking golden.  You know she cries over cute animal videos.  The Caspar supports are also so good.  Luggage.  Do I really need to say more?
I think it’s worth mentioning that my favorite ending of hers isn’t Claude or Caspar.  It’s actually with Ferdie.  I’m not super into it as a ship but I love love love how he enrolls in her art school to learn how to make things for her.  It’s adorable and so, so sweet.
Lemme come up with one not related to romance too.  Hmm...”Hilda needs a steaming” in the DLC is a very good line.  I really like how in her paralogue with Cyril you get to see her in a worried and serious mood rather than her usual peppy self.
24. share a funny story
My entire class is obsessed with boobs right now.  Also being naked.  They won’t stop lifting up their shirts and saying “boobies”.  Some of them know what their boobies really are.  One things his belly button is a boob.  Another usually says the arm pits.  I have one that will tear off his shirt and run around screaming “naked only!” until I can catch him and wrestle him back into his clothes.

Yugioh S3 Ep 12: Seto Discovers Hostile Takeover Tactics
For April Fools, I’m actually going to update this blog. I know, right? It’s been a little while.
I’ll have you know that, if I had more time, you were *this close* to getting a recap of this hot mess movie.
Tumblr media
Buuuut it turns out that movie is a lot longer than I thought. Soooo many bad wigs. Maybe another April Fools.
Anyway, back to Yugioh, are you ready for MORE BUSINESS?
Cuz if you wanted to watch a kid’s show with stocks in it well, I had no idea it would be the one about the playing cards. Really didn’t see that one coming. Stocks are going to be traded in a little bit, but currently, all we have to worry about is that Tristan is a monkey and Kaiba’s about to die.
He seems cool with it, both with being “dead” (still unsure if Tristan can be human ever again) and watching Kaiba become dead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is some high level freaky sci fi thing just stuffed into a side plot? Like...what purpose is the weird monkey robot?
(read more under the cut)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joey has completely run out of his thimble full of patience, and he’s taken over the part of Den Mother in lieu of Tristan being too horny/monkey to manage it himself. Watching Joey slowly become more and more too frustrated to Even Deal With This Right Now has been his character growth this entire arc.
And the team’s somewhat amusement and concern that one of their best friends--who they saw...pretty much die--and is now a very horny monkey is like how you would notice that your engine light is on. Like they just have so many other problems right now. They’ve decided they will get around to deciding what to do about this...later.
They’re definitely going to deal with the monkey later. Eventually. So they just tied him to the truck and continue driving.
Like that’s what they actually did, they actually just tied him to the truck and kept driving.
Tumblr media
Eventually, they do make it to the scene of the Kaiba card crime in their 3 wheel pickup truck, but unfortunately, so does the weird satellite laser, so once again our team does not make it in time to really make any difference. The Yugi team is consistently like...3 minutes too late. Should be their team motto.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Noah’s big plan is to make Mokuba watch Leichter--the hard to spell Big 5 with the very Dixie accent--explain in great detail all the ways Seto screwed Mokuba. And it was...something that I don’t think most kids would get. Last week it was a .com analogy, this week we’re straight up jumping into hostile takeovers. Seto decided to use the Big 5 to buy up a majority of the stock and fire his Father, but realized that Gozaburo would absolutely not let that happen.
So, Seto set up a whole plan to make it appear like he was losing the stock race, by leaking the whole plan that they were secretly buying allll the stock straight to Gozaburo but while pretending to be Mokuba (I assume by pinching his nose while shouting through a telephone) and then driving Mokuba to Gozaburo by attacking him point blank.
Did any children watching this show understand this? Did any of you?
Anyway, for some reason Mokuba is shocked that this happened.
Tumblr media
And then we get a flashback to remind us that yes, Mokuba was here when this happened. Maybe didn’t understand it at the time, but overall, should know by now that like...this happened. Noah revealing this to him really shouldn’t have been such a shocker, right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mokuba describes it as “the worst day in his life” which is kind of a lot since two seasons ago Mokuba was chained in a castle cell for several days (possibly weeks), turned into a playing card while his body was a zombie that did dishes for Pegasus, died in a VR game because his brother couldn’t play nice, then last season, got abducted and then was suspended from the bottom of a flying helicopter by one single rope tied around his waist, was imprisoned in a box warehouse where he barely escaped, found out one of his good friends is pretty sure he’s an Egyptian Pharaoh dont-think-about-it, only to find all of his other friends were now attached to torture devices and about to be drowned in the bottom of the sea or squashed by a couple tons of cargo container. And then the next day, 3 people got sent to the hospital during the tourney he’s the manager of and only one of those people isn’t still in a coma, and now there’s at least one serial murderer on board his blimp and there’s nothing he can do about it.
But sure Moki, this is your worst day.
Convinced that Gozaburo (I will never spell his name right, PS, my apologies) thinks Moki is on his side, Kaiba decides to do the deed. In his school clothes. Not entirely positive that baby Kaiba has any other outfit than his school clothes and that purple coat.
Like did Seto get off school early to go and do this, or did he honestly clock in at 8 AM, harass Joey and Yugi for a bit, maybe take a test, turn in his diorama of mitochondria that he made out of twizzlers or whatever, eat lunch while making fun of the skater kids who botch it on the stairs, scribble some art in art class until 3 PM, and then take the bus back home to do THIS?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And so although the Big 5 were still majority shareholders, they couldn’t really control Seto Kaiba--which leads me to think that at some point he managed to get their stocks away from them...somehlow...probably more insider trading, he seems really into that.
Anyways, long story short the Big 5 really screwed it on this one. I mean the company has to be run by a Kaiba per the Kaiba rule that we learned in S1 (kind of a weird rule this family enforces, when all of the Kaibas are SO BAD at romantic relationships that they can only date trading cards, or can’t stop getting abducted long enough to even go on a date with a real human ((Reminder that Mokuba and Serenity are the same age, but he’s 1/millionth as horny as any of these High School Juniors that are into Serenity)))
Leichter (who is the light purple font here, I uh...forgot to cap Leichter’s face so it’s somewhat confusing) decided to just continue explaining, mostly for Mokuba, I assume, because...everyone here already knows what’s happening.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And at this point he reveals that he does have a Blue Eyes.
Again, very surprised Noah gave him that card but youknow...the power of...whatever the hell is going on there between Kaiba and that paper card.
Anyways, the Blue Eyes gives him a win, so I guess he’s figured out somewhat how to use this card? Like it’s significantly less bad than it was in the previous seasons. Maybe that separation between him and the paper card in S2 was good for him. Got his relationship back on track.
Tumblr media
So like, something that is kind of vogue right now in more adult TV is this tendency to try and make all your characters relatable by making them realize and obsess over how they messed up to the point that they can no longer make any moral choices.
And that was the thing I was worried about in this arc, I was worried that the one guy on the writing staff who SUPER stans Seto Kaiba would make Seto into some sort of Bojack Horseman, who becomes so obsessed with his guilt that he kind of becomes a victim of what society did to him rather than a guy who ever made a choice. And Bojack’s not a bad show or anything, I did watch all of it, and it’s supposed to be more about society than the characters. But, as his problems from his youth compounded, he loses all of his agency as a character. If you are forced to be an ass then...well you can’t be one, by nature of what it means to be an ass.
Does that make sense? I see that more and more in shows these days, just a constantly apology fest whenever writers do a villain background episode.
But yes, Seto was trained to be a shark, but he was already a shark from day 1. He was always like this from the moment he was put in that orphanage. No apologies on behalf of the writing staff are needed and I’m glad they didn’t make any. It was somewhat refreshing that Seto never once apologized during this entire episode. He is awful, and he is completely fine with that.
Tumblr media
And like, Bro hates it when you do this type of parallel comparisons between characters, but I freakin love it because he might be an English major but he majored in technical writing, and I was minoring in film for a hot minute so I love analyzing stuff and he can just deal. So lets dive in. We just came off of a whole arc talking about Marik’s tragic backstory and it’s really interesting that Seto’s tragic backstory mirrors Marik’s a great deal (especially since Kaiba was the one who was supposed to inherit the magic rod) but the two of them have a very different response to it.
Marik’s background gave him absolutely no agency. Even when he did lash out against his father--that was the rod rather than Marik himself. He lost his nut because he got tortured by his Father and lived a very shelted life underground, there was no choice there. He even has a brother that he threw into the coals (well, stroke of lightning) for his own ambitions.
Seto, on the other hand, was also tortured by his Father, but lived a shelted life so far above everyone else, that he never really left that lifestyle. But, unlike Marik, when he got the chance to make a choice, instead of getting out of the Kaiba house to save his Brother, he decided to freakin destroy it, even if it involved torturing Mokuba (momentarily) in the process.
Both are destroying their Father’s legacy while also trying to rule the world at the same time, two different villains, two different ways, one isn’t necessarily better written than the other, but it does feel like Seto has a lot more control of his own life than Marik, who is currently bumming around in Tea’s brain.
But I dunno, maybe Seto will have a big moment where he will feel an ounce of guilt and we’ll find out that everything he did was secretly a good thing or The Only Way something. I might eat my words later and be somewhat disappointed. We’ll see.
If you just got here, this is a link to read these recaps from S1 Ep1, in case you felt like reading a novel’s worth of Yugioh, since we are on S3.

Andrew Bogut, Apparently, and Beautiful: His beauty, his puppy looks, his smile, his wet eyes and his efforts to be brave are so endearing, and go right to my heart."-A Volunteer SWEET DAMIEN Id 44345, 8 Months Old, 64 lbs. of Precious. Waiting for a family to love him, at the Manhattan ACC TO BE KILLED - 10/19/2018 DAMIEN is trying so hard to be brave. You can see it in his eyes, in the way he tries to put one paw in front of the other and tentatively explore this new world he has found himself in. His hope, his bouncy gait once he is comfortable, his sweet face. He is only 8 months old, probably younger, and he has found himself at the shelter because the parent he loved for 6 months became homeless. You can’t help but want to protect him, so young, so confused, so lost and rudderless As a volunteer who loves Damien says, “Damien is a work of art, a beautiful and statuesque youngster! It is hard to believe that he is still a puppy at eight months of age. He is so tall, with room to grow and so handsomely dressed in his perfect marble cake coat! Damien is shy at the care center although, according to his former owner, he would be quite friendly with strangers and very playful with his peers in dog parks. Leashed easily, he dashes to the yard, slowing down as we enter a pen. Damien and I met a few times. He is tentative in what he does but he has opened up, and I trust that every day will bring new achievements. His beauty, his puppy looks, his smile, his wet eyes and his efforts to be brave are so endearing and go right to my heart. He perks up with other dogs in playgroups but here too, it shows that he is bemused by his new and hopefully temporary situation. I am looking forward to meet Damien again but I would be so glad to find his kennel empty and learn that he was adopted by a wonderful family! If Damien seems to meet your dreams, come to the Manhattan Care Center and ask to meet him in person! He might be the one and only!: PRIVATE MESSAGE our page or email us at [email protected] if you can foster or adopt Damien and save his life. DAMIEN, ID 44345, @ 8 Mos., 64.4 lbs. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below) Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No young children (under 5),Recommend no dog parks Recommendations comments:: No young children: Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Damien may be intimidated by young children. He needs a slow approach and time to warm up. He should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at his own pace. Older, gentle children should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. No dog parks: Due to tense, uncomfortable behavior displayed toward dogs of the same sex, Damien may succeed best outside of dog park settings. Potential challenges: : Fearful Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Damien is a bit fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Damien the option to walk away from any social interaction. Damien should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Damien’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Damien would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. I really like your fic so far and looking forward to every new chapter! Thanks! X
Thank you!! It makes me unbelievably happy that people are enjoying it and connecting with the characters. I really love this fic, like, A HELL OF A LOT. I’m not going to say how many times I’ve read over it so far. But I can totally see myself reading it again and again and I hope that means it’s good!
I know I said this earlier, but it is such an exercise in patience posting it as a WIP! Reading over the chapter, my beta @louandhazaf doing the second beta on the chapter, then sending it to my pre-reader @phd-mama, then reading it over again before finally publishing, and doing it all on a schedule is hard! But it was either do this or wait a month or so and post it all at once.
I love the reactions though! It’s fun. AND I LOVE THE ART!!! There’s more art in chapter 3! @assisreal did an amazing job and I love it all!
CHAPTER 3 ON FRIDAY!!!
(Don’t Want Shelter is posting on Mondays and Fridays. It’s complete and I’m posting as the chapters are beta read and edited, in case you’ve somehow missed me reblogging my fic post a million times!)

Tumblr media Tumblr media
This mama-to-be is staying put. Pregnant Duchess Meghan (née Markle) and Prince Harrywill not attend Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ wedding in India, a source exclusively tells Us Weekly.
A second source adds that “Meghan will not be going to Priyanka’s wedding, especially now that she is pregnant.” (Chopra attended Markle’s wedding to the prince in England in May.)
Chopra, 36, and Jonas, 26, are set to tie the knot in the actress’ native India this weekend, and have already begun their prenuptial celebrations, including a traditional a Puja — a Hindu pre-marriage ritual.
The event took place at Chopras’ home in Mumbai, with the “Chains” crooner wearing a traditional Indian outfit and the former Bollywood star decked out in an embroidered suit and sari.

The 37-year-old Duchess of Sussex, for her part, is expecting her first child with husband Prince Harry, whom she wed in May at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle in England.
The Suits alum and Prince Harry are keeping busy. Earlier this week it was announced that the soon-to-be-parents are set to move from their current home in at Nottingham Cottage in London to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, England, prior to the birth of their baby.
“There are 10 bedrooms, and the cottage does need some updating and renovations. It’s much bigger than Nottingham cottage, which only had two bedrooms and was very tight,” an insider told Us of Meghan and Harry’s two-story cottage, which was gifted to them by Queen Elizabeth II.
The pair — who announced news of their growing brood in October shortly after they embarked on their first royal tour as a married couple — “should be fully moved in shortly after the holidays,” according to the insider.

2018年 富山県立美術館にて開催された「Art and Design to Interact with Materials」に選出、bookmark lightを展示。     同年FIELD RECORDを設立。
