The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or: "How am I Still Married?"

Obviously the following is not verbatim, but eh, it's pretty close.

Me: Martin Freeman is SUCH a baby here.

Him: Yeh, I forget he's been famous for so long. His character was meant to be 30 in The Office, that's why I guessed that he was 55 now. (He was referring to the previous night when I made him guess the current ages of MF and his current partner for no real reason or purpose. And then of Stephen Fry and his husband, not even actually realising that Stephen Fry narrates this film.)

Me: Do you know what I'm going to say about what happened when I went to see this at the cinema with a bunch of my friends in sixth form?

Him: Was it to do with Sherlock?

Me: No!

Him (exhausted): Was it... to do with... something you thought or experienced at the time?

Me: Yes!

Him: Ok.

Me: I'll just tell you! It was when the opening music played, which is the same as the music from the radio show, and (my then boyfriend) started singing it really loudly in the cinema and I was embarrassed and told him to shut up.

Him: Ah.

Me: See, you just DON'T what it's like to be with someone that's a super nerdy uber-fan.

Him: No, I don't.

Long for the World, Chapter One

Androids do not age; they are never children, and they never grow old. They’re like magic beings in a fairy tale.

This is a continuation of the story of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, androids created by Mycroft Holmes, a genius in the field of artificial intelligence who has learned how to make his androids self-aware and capable of experiencing emotion.

The first story, Learning the Heart, was told by Sherlock. It took place directly after a nuclear weapon was detonated over London, killing thousands. Mycroft’s androids, including Sherlock, combed through the wreckage to find survivors.

This story continues soon after that one, as the post-war world rebuilds and changes. Sherlock and John are now living at Baker Street with Mycroft’s colleague and friend Mrs Hudson, who is observing Sherlock and John to learn the limits of the new Series 3 androids.

This story is told by John Watson, an android, a lover of books, a writer of stories, beloved of Sherlock Holmes. (The voice may be a bit different from my usual.) It’s an important story to tell, he feels, because people need to understand that an android’s heart is not just a mechanism. No one knows exactly what a soul is; who’s to say an android doesn’t have one?

Anyone would have thought that Q looked like a human. Or at least that's what Sherlock thought while looking at Q as the android stood up. "It's quite early in the morning for you to be up and about." He remarked. "Usually, I can live with a little dust in the flat. Dust is good sometimes, you know. It tells you, a lot of things. Like if there's a stranger or intruder visited the flat."

Though he's grateful that Q didn't start cleaning immediately. The old him would have been upset if he started cleaning. "My piece of advise is to not clean daily. Especially during an ongoing case as any minute detail is a possible data that could be logged for evidence."

Now that he remembers… it's already morning. "Mrs. Hudson wakes up at 7 AM. You can check her during that time. If you think there's nothing else to do, you can also try brewing me a coffee. Just like now." He said as he offered a smile in return.

The android looked up as soon as Sherlock spoke to him and offered a small smile as a greeting; humans enjoyed these small moments of comfort that displayed non-aggression, after all. He did, however, get to his feet and brush his knees off as though it was a natural habit rather than just something programmed into him.

"I was simply ensuring that the larger particles of material resting on the carpet were removed. I would have hoovered but I would prefer not to disturb you or Mrs Hudson, as I understand her comfort is a priority." He explained, hands clasped behind his back as he rested on the balls on his feet to stretch out the cords within his legs that got reduced synthetic-fluid flow as he was kneeling.

"If you would prefer, I could set a specific cleaning schedule but, at the moment, I am just cleaning when there isn't much else for me to do." Cleaning was an easy task, to be put simply - it was never really finished so long as one knew where to look for dirt.

What are some of your favorite books?

This is not an exhaustive list. I have read a fucking lot of books. I guarantee you I have forgotten 8 out of my top 10 favorites.

When I was a kid my mom said I was too young to read RL Stine's Goosebumps books so I was banned, so I picked up one of RL Stine's Fear Street books instead, because at age 7 I understood malicious compliance. The book was Revenge of the Shadow People. It was the first horror story I ever read. Because of that I've had a lifelong obsession with shadow people characters. (Heartless, Aku, Okage Evil King Stan...) It's a modest book, but it helped shape my personality, so it belongs on this list.

My middle school favorite books—because I read them 5,000 times and will never forget them—were How To Disappear Completely And Never Be Found; The Last Book In The Universe; Self-Portrait with Wings; and anything by Neal Shusterman. The Last Unicorn SHOULD have been one of my favorites except I only saw the movie and didn't learn about the book until I was an adult.

As a kid I was really into Lovecraft when I was still young & ignorant enough to be like "gee, the way he writes about other races sounds kinda racist, but I'm sure there's a good reason for that!" The reason was he's hella racist. On the bright side, there's now a bunch of very good Lovecraftian stories ABOUT racism. I liked Lovecraft Country (of course) and The Ballad of Black Tom.

Lovecraft was the biggest influence on how I think about horror and Hitchhiker's Guide was the biggest influence on how I think about comedy and idk what that combo says.

Adultier favorites: Wild Seed (anything by Octavia Butler tbh), Machineries of Empire trilogy, Sherlock Holmes Vs. Cthulhu and I shan't apologize for my terrible taste; The Android's Dream; NOS-4-A2 which I picked up because it had the same name as a Buzz Lightyear character even though the Buzz Lightyear character is a robot and the book is about a car; I'm gradually working my way through Poirot; Carnacki the Ghost-Finder. 

I read the Popol Vuh in college and was hypnotized by its poetry but that was an academic translation and more recently it's had a poetic translation that I've bought but I haven't read yet.

Here's some random recent books I enjoyed—not necessarily my "favorites," but they're in my recent library card history so it's easy for me to look them up rather than trying to pull titles of old out of my ADHD black hole. Beholder by Ryan La Sala was fantastic—fun cosmic horror (both the premise and the entity itself), fun mystery, and I like it when you can say "and it's a queer romance" as a bonus to what makes the story good as opposed to being its only selling point. Such a Bad Influence had such a perfect ending that I went to the writer's site to immediately email her about it but then my browser crashed so I went to sleep and I still need to email her about it. Darcy Coates is my current "pumps out a million haunted house mysteries" author whose books I'm working my way through. Zero Sum Game was good, I still need to read the sequels.

Separate from the above, I'm in the market for book recs that feature Death/the Reaper as a main character, because I just read one that was crap. (The book was fine; but Death was characterized boringly and didn't have any significant impact on the plot. Like he was the selling point of the book and they could have just left him out.) Bonus points if Death is depicted as an actual skeleton rather than just some guy. I'm flexible on genres, but if it's romance Death has GOTTA be a skeleton, I'm not interested in a monsterfucker bait-and-switch. I already know about Discworld and respect that Death, I just want something that isn't Discworld.

It doesn't help that the British government is in the hands of a gang of corrupt criminals. John finally decides that the right boarding school might give Rachel the structure she seems to need. Long for the World, Chapter 2: In Our Time

This series tells the story of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, androids created by Mycroft Holmes, a genius in the field of artificial intelligence who has learned how to make his androids self-aware and capable of experiencing emotion.

This story (second in the series) is told by John Watson, an android, a lover of books, a writer of stories, beloved of Sherlock Holmes. (The voice may be a bit different from my usual.) It’s an important story to tell, he feels, because people need to understand that an android’s heart is not just a mechanism. No one knows exactly what a soul is; who’s to say an android doesn’t have one?

I believe most readers know what you're in for with this story, but I'll give chapter warnings for specific things in case this isn't the kind of story you can read. The story takes place over many years, so characters will die. In this chapter (covering about ten years) there are: prejudice directed against androids, an accident with injuries (and recovery), fear of incipient war, and the resurgence of a viral pandemic. Two characters die (Mycroft and Mrs Hudson).

Dear Data,

I still can't believe you're really going away. I keep thinking this is all a nightmare that I'm sure I'll wake up from any minute, but I keep not waking up. It keeps staying real. Awfully, unfairly real. You're really going away.

It's so unfair, I want to scream. I want to throw my hyperspanner across Main Engineering. I want to give that puffed-up idiot Maddox such an earful of everything I think of him that his damn skinny head will be ringing for weeks. I want to rage at everyone who was stupid enough to let this happen.

You're one of the best Starfleet officers I've ever had the honor to work with, if not the best. And I don't just mean your super android abilities. It's in how deeply you care about our mission, the thoughtfulness you put into the details of every project you work on, the devotion to nothing short of excellence in everything you do. It's the love you have for your job (yeah, Data, I know you can love). I've become a better Starfleet officer just by working alongside you. The Enterprise is losing so much with your departure, and I can't believe anyone would let this happen.

But I'm not just losing a great co-worker; I'm losing a friend. That might be what hurts the most. It's not everyone who gets to work alongside a dear friend, and I guess I took some of that for granted. I love my job, you know I do, but working with you made the days fly past. I'm realizing just how much I'm going to miss. I'm going to miss how easy it was to talk to you: how I could say something that would leave most people staring blankly at me but you would instantly understand. We were both Perceivers and that's something I'm going to be damn hard-pressed to find again. I'm going to miss your questions about sneezing and sleeping and life and death that made me think more about my own humanity. I'm going to miss watching someone use a colloquialism in front of you and smiling to myself when you immediately turn to me for an explanation. Damn it, Data, I'm even going to miss your never-ending string of awful jokes.

I keep thinking of all the things we'll never do together now. The dozens of ideas we had for future Sherlock Holmes adventures that'll never happen. The plasma flow regulator recalibration that we were going to work on together next week that I'll be doing alone now. That "game night" you were hoping to plan to test out all those 20th century Terran board games you found patterns for in that old replicator program you were fiddling with last week. I know everyone on the Enterprise is missing out – and everyone else in the galaxy whom you'd have been able to help if you'd lived out your career – but I feel like I'm the one who's losing the most. Maybe that's selfish of me, but I feel what I feel.

I know you're not dead, that you're just going away, but it still feels like I'm mourning a thousand little deaths all at once.

I know there are ways we can keep in touch, but it won't ever be the same again.

I hope you're able to find another path that feels as right for you as this one did. I hope you're able to get that teaching job that you were considering and that it brings you the same level of fulfillment that serving in Starfleet did. Most of all, I hope you're all right – out there in a world that sees androids as nothing but machines who can be ripped apart without compunction. I wish the whole world could see you the way I do – white glow and all – and recognize the wonderful person you are underneath that synthetic skin.

I just want you to know, I'm glad to have known you, Data. Even if it had to end like this, I'll never regret the year and a half I had to get to know you and work alongside you. You're the best friend I ever could have asked for. I really thought I'd grow old working on this ship with you, and I hate that everything had to be cut short far too soon. But no matter what, I'll always treasure the time I did have with you, being your friend.

I'm angry for you, Data, and I'm sad and I'm hurt, but more than anything, I'm so glad you were stationed here on the U.S.S. Enterprise with me. Take care of yourself out there.

I wrote this little one-shot about a year ago, when I found myself in Geordi's shoes in real life. A wonderful co-worker and dear friend whom I'd worked extremely closely with for over four years was very suddenly and unfairly bullied into resigning, leaving both her and me unable to do anything about it. This one-shot was just as much my way of processing my own sudden rage, feelings of crippling loss, and deep sense of unfairness with it all just as much as it was about Geordi and Data. And unlike Geordi and Data's story in "The Measure of a Man", my story didn't have a happy ending.

This story is dedicated to Jenn, the best Teen Librarian I've ever gotten to work with. This story is dedicated to all the program ideas we never got to do together, the stories we never got to share, and the time that was cut short far too soon. I'm glad I got to be your Geordi while it lasted. Live long and prosper.
