Why we (Millennials) are so angry; A personal observation.

Why are we (Millennials/Me) so angry? Why are we so tired? Why do we have such a poor outlook on this world?

Well, I’ve figured out why I’m so angry. Ever since I was a child I can remember my parents telling me that I could accomplish whatever I put my mind to. You can get everything you’ve ever dreamed of if you work hard to get it. Hard work is the key to success -work hard every day of your life and it will pay off. 

Yes, I grew up understanding that I need to put in hard work and countless hours of effort to earn my happiness, to earn my success. But ultimately, this is useless. This methodology is useless. 

Work = success is a mentality that does not apply to today’s world. Not at all. This may have worked in older generations (older, better economies, really) But today this is a nearly impossible rule. 

Back in the 70s when college tuition would cost on average less than $3,000 a year. This figure does not include room and board/food plans etc. 

My tuition this year was in total: $8,611.06 which is sizably a little lower than the 2016-2017 average the above source calcualates. 

However, I did not live on campus, I had the priviledge of a part time job to cover my travel expenses. I was lucky enough to have a car that could withstand a two hour round trip every day. 

I did live on campus for the full academic year 2015-2016. This figure is grossly, absolutely horribly larger. 

Room: $2,000 (traditional dorm with one roomate) 

Food Plan:  $1,500 (this plan only meant I ate twice a day, if that) 

Tuition and fees: $4,200 (full time 14-15 credits per semester) 

So for the year, double everything, approx. $16,329.25 my student loans only gave me around $5,500 for the year. I had to take out an additional private loan for $11,000 to make up the difference. This was a horrible experience, truly awful, having no idea where I was going to get that money. Scrambling to apply for a loan online from SallieMae to get this taken care of. Horrible. 

And the school I attend is a public university that is still fairly affordable. Yet my costs were nearly twice as much as I made that year at my job. This covers my economy point. Simple hard work means nothing, so many people will never have the means, or credit to pay for/take out loans for college. Our country cannot faciliate a “pull up by the bootstrap” culture anymore. People who do not have the means, financially or otherwise to go to school, will never go. 

I am so angry because of all this hard work, and money spent will not guarantee me a damn thing. Assuming I can even get a job within my field within 6 mos. after graduation itself is farfetched. Not only that, but I’m an education major, meaning I want to be a teacher, a profession that is notoriously underpaid. Or better yet, many college students are insulted by unpaid internships that “reward” the graduate with “experience.” I’m sorry Sharon, I can’t buy my damn groceries with experience. That’s too bad Carl, my landlord doesn’t accept service-based learning in lieu of rent. Unpaid internships ought to be illegal if you ask me. Utterly unforgivable. Don’t even get me started on the wage gap. Hard work, experience, and education don’t mean hog spit when you have a set of ovaries in a gender dominated working world. #ShesBossy #HesALeader

I am angry that no matter how educated, professional, or competent a woman may be, in many cases she will still be undervalued in comparison to her male counterpart within the work force. 

I’m getting to my main point, I really am. The election. Hoo-boy. The damn 2016 Presidential election. We all worked so hard to elect a competent, confident, experienced President. However, no matter how experienced, educated or professional you are as a woman, a man who is utterly unqualified in comparison to you will still be considered a better investment than you.

That is what this election has taught me. Leading to my revelation. 

Yes, work as hard as you like. Hard work is important, you need this to succeed. However, your hard work will mean nothing, as your goal/opportunity/chance for success will be yanked away from your hands as soon as you feel like you’ve earned it. 

Our election was stolen from us. Our hard work seems pointless, as the popular vote means nothing to the electoral college. Women can be anything and everything, but President. 

Why should we even try? Our work as Millennials is already completely worthless in the eyes of older generations, our cultural and generational differences deem us unworthy competators in their markets. This country treats us with just as much disdain. This is why I am fed up. 

I was born and raised to work hard for everything, taught that my efforts will be rewarded. And yet, my generation is criticized for expecting some “reward” for my hard work. A reward such as a livable minimum wage, a heathcare system, affordable educaiton, a welcoming society for minorities and those in need.

Why are we being punished for following the methodology pounded into us since our birth?
