1994 Xiaguan Tuo | Yeeontea | Ripe Puerh

Let me say, I love aged ripe puerh. Especially stuff like this from Yeeon. I don’t know if it’s the way they used to prepare and store shou back in the day, or if it’s simply the age. This tea is incredibly smooth and clean. Nice oily mouth feel, it’s a very easy tea. A lot of Yeeon’s aged ripes have this same quality — the leaves can take a good beating. Liquor color is nice, dark, and red with a very wet, woody, herbal aroma. The tea smells like the wet pile taste would be too much, but that flavor is nonexistent especially at this age. This leaf soup is an incredibly easy drink, bound to be enjoyed by most shou lovers. I do almost wish the flavor had been stronger, but you are always free to overleaf.

Having some Amalgamation of Capital for Day 4 of Teamas. This shou Puerh was specially made for the January 2021 Tea Club via White2Tea and packed into a bamboo shoot.

I tried it when I first got it and then promptly forgot about it as it got buried in my tea cart.

I think the bamboo taste is even more pronounced as it's been untouched for almost 3 years. To me, I get a dense, woody taste, and I'm ok with that 😁

🍂 2006 Ancient Tree Royal Shou Pu’er

I used tea to motivate some chores today, and let me tell you this result was very motivating.

I could not get my chores done fast enough 🙌🏻

First few steeps at 100°C for 10s, and I almost immediately dropped to 95° because there was something in the taste at 100° that I wasn’t loving.

Did a bunch at 95°C and then bumped the last few back up to 100°C and got a little loose on timing.

This bigger little tea pet joined me, but is not getting the washes poured over him and doesn’t get much tea.

A rare shou brewing session with Prosbloom from W2T. Ngl, this one went in my basket because the wrapper design struck my fancy. Prosbloom didn't end up down the drain like the last shou I tried. It was drinkable, but not something I'd order again. Smooth, thick and simple, with a flavor note that reminded me of oats. No wet pile taste.

A question for my readers, if you drink it: What do you look for in a shou puerh?

Getting into gongfu style tea! I thought it might be helpful to keep track of my preferences as I delve into the many categories of tea out there. Today’s tea is my first sheng puerh! Part of Yunnan Sourcing’s First Steps tea sampler, harvested in 2020. It’s interesting but I think I prefer the ripe/shou puerh that came in the same sampler as there’s an astringency with the sheng. I’ll have to try a more aged one next time I place a tea order to compare.

Birthday Cakes???

Got a late birthday present from my beautiful wife! What better gift can you receive besides tea? There were more teas in the box that I apparently can’t see until Christmas, so that’s, you know, frustrating lol.

Pictured is a 2021 Natural Redhead Mini, a White Tea Basics samplers and the 200g 2022 Moon Bear cake, all from White2Tea.

The White Tea samplers is very cool and very cute. A mini tong of 8 mini cakes, made up of various types of White Tea. It include Bai Mu Dan, Shou Mei, Gong Mei, and 3 other White2Tea White Tea cakes in mini form.

The star though the Moon bear cake. This cake was first pressed as an exclusive for White2Tea club members last year. The cake was roughly 75-100g. It was an odd cake to say the least as they classed in as being somewhere between a Raw Puerh and a White Tea. When I first tried it I as not very fond of the flavors, but when I tried it again several months later I developed a huge taste for it. So much so that I had to hold myself back from devouring the whole cake as at that point, it was not for sale on their website. So you can imagine my excitement when they released a new full size pressing for purchase this year. I can finally finish off the mini cake, then break into this new, fresh pressing.

Enjoying about 5Gs of Puerh Junky’s Mincemeat (which is now out of stock). It’s a 7536 from 2007. I reviewed this one a while back, early in my tea journey, and I still like it! Maybe even more so now. I’m on spring break right now, enjoying the 10 days-ish away from school.
