iconic of watcher to apologize 3 days later and not address the core issue which is that people don’t want the insane production value they’re going for. however i do think they’re genuinely sorry on an emotional level, not just sorry they fucked their shit up. and it seems like they’re going to be continuing to reevaluate so hopefully in the next few weeks they’ll come to the realization that they literally just have to cut costs. idk i honestly hope they salvage this and that it’s not too late to win a critical mass of people back over. :/

a frustrating fandom thing that’s really bothered me these last few years has definitely been this trend of “it guy” x reader fics that have infiltrated fandom.

like obviously i’m not against canon character x reader fics, i think they can be fun and engaging when written correctly— but what’s frustrating to me is how people will get into something on a surface level because they think a character/actor is attractive, but don’t bother learning about canon or actually consuming the source material, and don’t plan to. the end goal is just writing smut about some guy and a coquettish, small, delicate cisgender white girl.

so then you have this massive influx of fic with characters who are flanderized beyond recognition, completely out of character, or otherwise inserted into AUs that completely remove them of defining and important character traits (for example, maybe, “AU where eddie munson is a farmhand in the 1930s and your dad owns the farm”— which completely strips him of so much of his character. someone is not always their interests, but socially, eddie is very much defined by his love of D&D, nerdy fantasy stuff, and heavy metal, which i don’t have to tell you wasn’t much around during the great depression, and especially not available to a migrant farmer. and yes, this is based on a real example i’ve seen floating around in his tag).

in the end, it becomes such that in reading these fics, the only thing that defines one male character from another is physical description or some quirks of speech. the passion for the source material is completely lacking. this character could be any character, provided that you swap around the proper markers. he still behaves nearly the same from fic to fic, regardless of fandom, dominating and maybe cruel to everyone but the reader (who is nearly always a precious-yet-rebellious cis white girl, small, thin, delicate). there may be some plot to these fics, but the end goal is almost always exclusively sex-related.

it’s exhausting to see across fandom lines— especially with slashers, and especially with eddie munson specifically. i can understand wanting to write something smutty now and again, obviously! i love writing and reading a good spicy fix now and again. but i find myself missing the days where x reader fics were filled with edginess, because at least those were often filled with passion or creativity, something beyond this boring, beige blur of ostensibly “well written” fic full of flat characters and position and situation of the day that xyz character is going to fuck you in.

great meeting with the HR team whom I love and would die for, followed immediately by a bleh meeting with [redacted] that undercut most of the work I’d just done with the HR team & totally took the wind out of my sails. idk man I don’t get why she tells me I can be in charge of something and then it turns out she’s already independently made most or all the decisions and all the work I did was wasted because we’re going to do it her way thanks. blehhhhhh. then at the end she sent me into a muted rage by bringing up the HUGE blowup conflict we had a month ago & repeatedly referring to it as my “miscommunication” when in reality she just wasn’t paying attention! I have all of our communication about the issue in writing, which I forwarded to her at the time to prove that I had addressed it with her in detail! she literally just wasn’t paying attention!!!!!!!!!!! and yet she continues to insist to me and everyone else that I never talked to her about it (IT’S ALL. THERE. IN. WRITING. I shriek as I claw at my face) and she always talks about it in ways that make me look either super shady or super incompetent. I just. I long to be free.
