Happy Tuesday, Black Sails Nation!

As was requested by @billie-bones, I’ve listened back through 18 hours of interviews and compiled a list of every fic mentioned on the podcast.

This list is categorized by episode and includes ratings and summaries, as well as direct links to the fics, themselves. I’ll tag as many authors as I can, but I may not know the tumblr accounts for everyone. If you see someone who’s fics are referenced and you don’t see them tagged and happen to know their handle on here, you may want to send this on to them, that way they know which episode they’re mentioned in and can listen to hear the fic discussed if they so choose.

Some fics got multiple mentions across several episodes and so, to streamline, I’ve listed them only under the first episode in which they are mentioned, so there are no duplicate listings.

Edit: This will be a living document, updated with each new episode with any new fic recommendations. If you’re an upcoming guest and want to compile your top 5 and prefer to mention fics that haven’t been mentioned before, this list will be a valuable resource to cross-reference.

I want to thank my dear @tiofrean, partner in crime and all-around badass extraordinaire, for taking my bare bones list of titles, authors, and links, and filling them out with summaries and all the details you may want to know before committing to a fic. She also broke down every series referenced into its individual parts, since ratings and details will change throughout a particular series. She did this without me requesting it because she’s simply that awesome. Not only has she donated cover art commissions for several episodes, including the upcoming-coming Episode 13, but she helped with this project, which took several days, just for that part, out of the goodness of her heart. Sorry, I went down a silverflinthamilton rabbit hole, as one does, and I saw people calling Thomas Hamilton bland. I would get it if it was just "I don't like him", that's understandable,I respect it, but bland?

The man who, in 18th century England, used his privilege to introduce pardons for pirates (!) and had a relationship with a man(!) that his wife knew about (!) being aware that he might lose everything because of it? Who was put into a mental asylum because of both of these things, and later in a penal colony? Who then, if we accept his reunion with Flint as real, has to reckon with the person he once loved killing his father and becoming a legend-inspiring bloodthirsty pirate who started a war in his name, not to mention the fact that one of his closest friends betrayed him and killed his wife?

Like, excuse me if I find all of that intriguing and worth exploring.

I get it, he is not as developed as Silver and Flint, but that is part of the appeal: the bones are there for you to build your own story, and they are damn good bones.

You want poems about Ulysses. I ask: What about Penelope?

It's just...he's a good man. An interesting man. More people should say that. And someone should be willing to defend it.

A little snippet for you:

"Well. It's been ten years since we've seen each other and our love for each other was still there."

"That's something completely different. Before we were separated, you were everything to me." James pauses and something pained flashes across his face. "Silver. He was... We were... Nothing."

Reading Between the Lines Podcast is now available on YouTube with closed captioning!

All episodes are uploaded and live now! I’ve had quite a few people who are interested in the podcast, but are dealing with auditory processing issues or hearing impairment and still wanted to enjoy the discussions (the stories themselves are, of course, all readily available on AO3). It’s not a plain text transcription format, it’s still captions running at the speed of the episodes, but it’s a start!

I’ve been struggling with lack of available closed captioning with both Spotify and Apple Podcasts. YouTube has finally both solved that problem and opened up the podcast to a much wider audience.

Are you talking about both Hamiltons or just Thomas? Because either of those is A fucking Plus.

So if we’re just going with Thomas, I think the way the three of them would work would help to regulate each other. Flint loves both of his boys so very much, and they both balance him in very different ways.Flint is someone who is very narrow minded in his goals, which we see a lot of in the show, it’s why Silver was able to bend Flint’s will so much, because he was able to either work outside the parameters of his view, or twist things to appear like they would be aiding him. Silver and Thomas both know how to handle him. Thomas knows how to handle James. Silver knows how to handle Flint. Together they can piece together who he is and who he’s going to become in the days, months, years after Silver stops his war. Together they can both get him out of his own head, get him to look to the things he has instead of the things that could have been, get him to see that no, things aren’t perfect, but sometimes perfect isn’t achievable. But they can do it while watching his back, making sure he doesn’t do something dangerous because he feels like he has to. Because he doesn’t have to do anything anymore. None of them do.And Flint can give them both what they want. What they need and have either lacked their whole life or have been without for so long it almost feels like a part of them is missing. Flint loves them both with the sort of undying loyalty that you can’t find just anywhere. He loves them enough to start wars for them, to be vulnerable with them in a way that he didn’t think he could ever be, to let down his walls for a moment, to end wars for them. And if we’re including Miranda then that is all true as well, but Miranda gives them all something. Miranda is a silent fighter, you can see that clear as day. She does what she knows her men cannot, endures what they can’t see. She’s the strength that all of them need and the fury that protects them all. She knows how to keep herself composed until she can’t stand it anymore. And she loves just as fiercely as anyone. She can bring them back from the edges they all love to toe off of, she shields them all form the worst of things, she pushes herself to her absolute limit for them. Though her and Silver don’t get any screen time together minus one moment of eye contact I can imagine the way they both work together, how they work around Flint, herding him towards the direction he needs to go. I can see them mirroring each other on Thomas and Flint’s sides, sharing knowing glances and soft touches and silent conversations that last only seconds but can convey so much. I can imagine the way they both hover in the doorway to Thomas’s office, Miranda with her back straight and all the propriety a woman of her (previously held) position cannot unlearn, Silver leaning against the doorway in a way that drives Flint up the wall, even after years of living with pirates. I can see them all working to convince Silver that yes, they love him just as much as they love each other, and gently urging him not to push himself beyond his own limits, especially when he has particularly bad days. I can see them all spending nights up with each other, each of their own nightmares making sleep an impossibility, the silent comfort of having another next to you.I can see the way they all wake up in the morning, sometimes all in the same bed, sometimes in any number of beds. I can see the gentle kisses, and how they all move as one and around each other in the way that you can only get through years of living together. I can just see this as plain as anything.
