Day 3 of 365 - Great Silverwoman

Another upload of something I had posted on the Soul-Droid account, but redone so that Ruby’s arms aren’t like ridiculously small. Come to think of it, I could have just used this for the Dragon Ball anniversary commemoration picture since she’s dressed like Gohan, but hey, I guess there’s only so lazy that I can be.

“I may be poor and I may be Southern, but my mama did teach me manners.”

I laugh. Slightly embarrassed and quite amused, very much put in my place.

“I know how to sit at a table, eat what is served to me, and say no thank you to seconds.”

I keep laughing and take her arm. We walk away from the gardens of France towards Japan to admire the temples.

“Have you ever been to France?” she asks.

“Just for a day, once, on my way to South Africa. I spent the entire day eating and walking. I walked over to the Louvre, looked at the glass pyramid and decided I’d rather just keep eating. So I ordered a coffee and a croissant and sat at a nearby café.” She laughs, “So you went to France and all you did was eat?”

“And walked. All around the city, made my way down the Chance de L’aison, wandered some more and then impressed myself by stumbling upon a street full of designer shops.” She rolls her eyes. “Here I am wondering through a strange city, I don’t know where I’m going and poof, I look up and there they are, Chanel…Louis Vuitton…Prada. I don’t know what to say, it must be in my blood.” She rolls her eyes again and laughs more.

When we get to Italy I tell her how a few summers ago I spent a week in Rome with my mother, grandmother, and cousin. How a pair of my favorite earrings was bought at Rome’s version of Claire’s Boutique. How much I enjoy, when people compliment me on them and ask me where they are from, saying Rome. The pleasure is not as much from saying Rome and seeming well traveled, but from knowing where in Rome I got them. Claire’s in Rome is exotic and worldly but here, in the US, it’s cheap. It amazes me how much the value of a product changes as it crosses an ocean.

“Its not that I doubt your manners,” I say. “I just want to know we can eat anywhere and that you will try new things.” Like fish and tofu, I think.

“Have I ever given you a reason to think I won’t?” No. She hasn’t.

Yesterday, as I settled into my airplane seat, on the way to New Paltz for a writing retreat, I open Skin, by Dorothy Alison. The first essay tightens my chest; the title is  “Context.” Alison writes about her desire to provide a context for who she is. She tells the story of bringing a girlfriend home. She tells about a woman raised summering at the Jersey Shore, a woman raised in an upper class Northeastern home, a woman much like myself. This woman in the story had no idea what to expect of Alison’s family even though she had heard stories. And although she felt welcomed and loved by them, she had no context in which to put them.  

I know Abby’s family. They are wonderful and warm, and after two years of dating, the context in which she was raised comes at little surprise to me. Maybe her house was a bit smaller than I expected and maybe the tract housing so common in Florida makes me want to cringe, but overall her home is known to me. I wonder what my home will be like for her. What about the context in which I was raised?

Walking through Epcot on my 31stbirthday and watching the people provides a lot of base for conversation. We comment on the fashion styles of Floridians, we play my favorite game of “Gay or European?” and we discuss religious Judaism as families of Orthodox Jews, who are strangely over-populating the park on this hot summer day, pass by.

I explain modern Orthodox and Hassidic, what Tallit is, Yarmulkes and wigs, the overall similarities between the dress of any religious people. She asks about keeping Kosher and tells me that if she were to convert she would need to do it for more than just me; she would need to do it for herself. She tells me she always loved Jews, and at a young age asked her dad if she could have a Keepah (not too surprisingly he had no idea where to buy one). She tells me one of her favorite things about the idea of being Jewish is the sense of knowing better and being better. She loves the idea that most Jewish laws are based on heath, education, and cleanliness, on being different than everyone else. Her ego finds the Jewish sensibility attractive.

As I tell her about the times in college having potluck Shabbat dinners with my Habonim Dror friends she tells me she would like to try keeping Shabbat. We discuss our thoughts about circumcision as we leave Nemo’s ride, on our way to Canada. Oh Canada! Years in Montreal taught me how much I love being Jewish. From Friday night dinners in Westmount to the built in community Habonim gave me, college was when I learned to love my Jewish community. Graduate school is where I am learning to love my gay community.

Walking by The Racetrack, to see if it has opened, Abby asks me if she were to convert would it be good enough. Would she still just be some poor Southern kid or does the conversion buy her some credibility. I don’t really know the answer. I tell her it’s more about what happens after the conversion. Are the kids Jewish? Do you take days off for the holidays? Are you part of the community?

Epcot’s depiction of Canada makes me smile, I smile from knowing how offended Canadians would be to see their country depicted as Inuit, the Rockies, a French hotel, and lumber jacks. As we walk toward England I tell Abby a bit more about my Jewish friends in college and how much I loved Friday nights. Standing in line for fish ‘n chips, in England, she asks me more about being good enough for my family. I start to realize that my sister’s judgment and my dad’s critical nature have become the primary representation of my family. I know my mom will love her, so I tell her about Aunt Fran and Uncle Andy, about their kids, and that side of the family. The side my dad has run away from, the side that I have always run to. This leads into stories about my days as a fat kid. Standing in my cousin’s pantry staring wide eyed at all the junk food, eating as much as I could before I got caught. Abby tells me my fat kid stories are some of her favorites. She loves to imagine me hoarding food like a prisoner.

As the day comes to an end and we watch the fireworks we make jokes about the overall weirdness of Epcot. The rides preach energy conservation while all around us is waste and excess. In these moments of sarcasm, snobbery, and critique I fall in love a little more with her. I think we could make a great Dr. and Mrs. Silverwoman
