Tragic Mick is a STAX and Muscle Shoals man. He also likes Motown, though not as much.

Esther hates female singers & has rerecorded a bunch of songs with her singing that she loves. She's shit at singing but don't tell her that. Her current musical nemesis is Adele.

Monty is the character who likes pop punk / emo. He is the tumblr music character. Is this because I fundamentally don't understand Monty's appeal & so I associate him with other popular fandom things that don't appeal to me? Probably, tbh.

The Night Nurse likes experimental eletronica dj soundscape stuff that starts intense and gets more intense. Charles is fascinated & a little turned on, but can't listen to more than a song or two at a time. No one else can stand her music.

TCK is a musical theater gay. He's a divas of pop gay.

Niko & Crystal discover they both listen to Muppet songs when they are sad

Edwin thinks Frank Sinatra is sexy & generally has an interest in jazz, big band, swing. Charles is up for it -- it's another musical overlap they share. Charles is more a Louis Armstrong man though. He also likes Cab Calloway. Niko is more into Duke Ellington & Nat King Cole. Crystal is more into Ella Fitzgerald.

Niko tries to teach herself the ukelele, with mixed results.

Charles, Crystal, & Niko all appreciate a good mashup. Edwin does not understand the appeal.

Crystal introduces Edwin to Nina Simone & Tracy Chapman. Jenny likes Tracy Chapman a whole bunch as well.

Niko & Crystal both introduce Janelle Monae to Edwin. He appreciates their music, but isn't as fond of it as the girls.

Charles intros Prince to Edwin. Prince is another musician Edwin finds himself embarassingly attracted to.

Jenny learned how to play the piano when she was younger & when she is sad she will play Bach. Edwin loves the Goldberg Variations.

Edwin & Charles have a longstanding argument about whether or not John Cage's 4'33" is music. No one understands which side either of them is on, because it seems to shift everytime they argue.

I've answered this in a really thorough way and it ended up really long so I put a cut sorry :_)

ok I had a year or two lasting obsession with radiohead, so because I know all the words/tunes etc I listen to radiohead when I'm doing homework or something that requires my brain to be on something else because old music that I already know is nice to listen to but boring enough not to distract me. favourite song: Let Down

Radiohead trivia: the song 'Nude' has an intro that is the backwards version of the outro

then ofc there's David Bowie who is such an amazing musician and I listen to Bowie if I want to be cheered up. favourite song: Queen Bitch

I love the Cranberries too, especially Dolores O'Riordan's wonderful singing, but I don't know a huge range of their songs only like five. favourite song: Sunday

I've become a fan of The Cure without realising it and they're really cool. favourite song: Just Like Heaven

fun fact I discovered that I can basically vibe to any song as long as I'm hyper enough (vibing to Bach for gcse music was what made me discover this, he's so groovy)

like it’s kind of hard not to hear it or be amazed when you know it, but famously Nina Simone originally wanted to be a classical pianist specializing in Bach. It ‘didn’t work out for her’. So on specifically that early album, arguably her first, on more tracks than just that one, she’s constantly teasing and improvising fugues in her solos. She’d do that occasionally for the rest of her career but it’s really pointed and beautiful there: people tend to identify this solely in terms of ‘rage’ or something but it’s a complex move I think (which doesn’t preclude anger).
